The Mission Of Mission Church BY COURTNEY MENGEL
For a long time, it had been the vision of Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, to open a food pantry to the community. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the church shifted staff roles to keep everyone employed, and after receiving a donation of 12,000 pounds of food, the staff decided to act on the vision of opening Mission Food Pantry. On April 9, 2020, the church officially landed the pantry. At first, the staff members were unsure of how to run a food pantry, so they contacted several food pantries across the country for
help. Mission Food Pantry operated out of the church’s gymnasium for several months. Knowing the food pantry had to be relocated, the staff renovated four unused classrooms in the facility. By August of 2020, Mission Food Pantry moved into its permanent home. “In the beginning, it was eye opening to see how much need there was in the community,” said Brian Bitler, director of Mission Food Pantry and director of operations and community impact at Mission Church. “ We don’t do income verification. If people say they have a need, we want to make the food available to them.” Mission Food Pantry partners with four different food banks in the area and receives donations from several local businesses. “It’s a community effort,” stated Bitler. “We have the privilege of housing everything, but we’re all working together to help those in need in our community.” See Mission Church pg 9

Looking For A Few Good Drivers BY ANN MEAD ASH
“My drivers have been phenomenal through (the) COVID-19 (pandemic), and it has not been easy,” said Marie Glass, Paradise point person for Lancaster Meals on Wheels. Glass, who has been involved with the program for more than a decade, said that the lack of contact has been difficult for both drivers and those who receive meals. “People who were accustomed
to visiting with clients can’t talk to them and may not even see them to know they’re all right,” she said, adding that the Paradise volunteer coordinators and drivers have not missed a day of deliveries throughout the pandemic. The Paradise Meals on Wheels program’s coverage area includes part of the Lampeter region. It is affiliated with Lancaster Meals on Wheels, which makes about 350 meals per day for area

recipients. The Paradise organization is located in a room in the Together Community Center (TCC), 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Meals provided by the Lancaster program are delivered to TCC each Monday through Friday. One hot meal and one cold meal are included each weekday for each of about 25 clients. Two drivers pick up the meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and one driver handles the lighter Tuesday and Thursday routes.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. The organization projects that by 2025, this number will rise to nearly 13 million. Additionally, one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Based on this statistic, dementia kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Tracie opened Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC) in 2015. Although located in Washington Boro, RRWC treats animals from roughly 17 counties in Pennsylvania. Every year, RRWC rehabilitates nearly 2,000 animals and is the home to several nonreleasable animals. “A lot of people don’t realize the dedication,” said Tracie. “It’s not a job. It’s a lifestyle. It’s seven days a week, 365 days a year. No vacations, no days off.” Some of the non-releasable animals serve as educational ambassadors in RRWC programs. RRWC offers off-site programs for birthday parties, schools, camps, clubs, and more. The programs are suitable for people of all ages and can be tailored to fit the groups’ needs. Tracie noted that wildlife rehabilitation centers are very important. Most people do not have the knowledge to take care of injured wildlife, which is why Tracie encourages members of the public to call RRWC if they come across wildlife in need of assistance. “Do not feed the animals,”

stated Tracie. “Put the animal in a dark place to relax and give us a call.” For more information about RRWC, visit https:// ravenridgewildlifecenter.org or search for “Raven Ridge Wildlife Center” on Facebook. To donate to the center, visit https://raven ridgewildlifecenter.org/wish -list.html.

Drivers from pg 1 Meals are provided for a nominal fee. Clients receive five ounces of meat, five ounces of starch, and three ounces of vegetable a day, and meals are available for recipients who need to follow a customized diet, including those on low-sodium, diabetic, low vitamin K, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets, as well as soft diets, puree diets, and others. Hot meals may include ham and pineapple gravy or a shrimp dish, while cold meals may include a turkey and cheddar or other type of sandwich. Salads are sometimes served in lieu of sandwiches. Currently, the Paradise organization could use a few volunteer drivers. Volunteer time to drive totals about
three hours a month. Drivers pick up meals at 8:30 a.m. at TCC and deliver on one of two routes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “I have 20 drivers and right now I have no substitutes,” noted Glass. Since the Paradise delivery area extends to Lampeter, Glass noted it would be nice to have a driver from that area. The delivery range could include Georgetown, Kinzers, White Horse, the area west to the intersection of routes 896 and 30, and the region north beyond the village of Intercourse. The program allows many senior residents as well as others recovering from illnesses to remain in their own homes. Those wishing to help or to observe a route may call 717-940-4640.

Now, the group helps those who are struggling with their phyrsical or mental health or are experiencing other challenges. When Mitz-

Set In Stone: Fossil And Mineral Club To Host Extravaganza BY COURTNEY MENGEL
The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club invites the public to attend its annual show.
R073370
The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club will host its fifth annual Christmas in July Extravaganza on Saturday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Those who attend will see unique fossils, trilobites, Paleozoic wonders, gems, jewelry, minerals, and crystals. There will also be free expert specimen analysis. “This event brings back the person-to-person aspect of having interactive discourse again,” said club founder Chris Haefner. “It’s a relief already just knowing we can host a live show!” Tickets for the show can be purchased on the day of the event inside the Farm and Home Center. The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and outof-state field trips. Additionally, the club helps scouts earn their merit loops and badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free - often on a field trip to the Pequea Silver Mines. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for scouts, and more. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club” on Facebook.

Dutch Apple To Stage “Grumpy Old Men” Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will bring “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” back to its stage on Thursday, Aug. 5, after closing its previous run at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The return of the show will also mark the theater’s first show operating
at 100% capacity after more than a year of following the state mandates that had been in place from COVID-19. “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Aug. 5 through Saturday, Sept. 4. This is a new musical
adaptation of the 1993 Warner Bros. film about two aging neighbors who have been feuding most of their lives. The two grumpy retirees, whose verbal and sometimes physical altercations date back to their high school days, peak in rivalry when a beautiful, eccentric and charming woman moves into the neighborhood. Back to reprise their lead roles is Luther Charkurian as John Gustafson, a retired history teacher and neighbor to retired TV repairman Max Goldman, played by Rob Summers. Ariel Truax, a college professor, is played by Miranda Jane. A range of adult dinner and show ticket prices are cur-
rently available. The show is rated PG-13 due to some adult humor. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Tickets can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900, visiting www.DutchApple.com or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road in Lancaster.

She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games.
