Flaim of Troop 28, Paradise; Howie Hartman, Troop 56, Strasburg; and Donald H. Wilson, Pack and Troop 76, New Providence, are the 2022 District Award of Merit Recipients in the Susquehanna District. Flaim has served in numerous positions, including den leader for Pack 28 for 13 years, sssistant Scoutmaster for Troop 28 for seven years and currently as popcorn chair for Pennsylvania Dutch Council, a position he has served in for several years. He is currently completing his Wood Badge Ticket. He has earned several training and other awards in his Scouting career, including the Religious Award. He has completed New Leader Essentials, Cub Scout Basic Training, Boy Scout Basic Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. See Scout Leaders pg 3

he 93rd Pennsylvania FFA State Convention took place from June 7 to 9 on the Penn State University campus. Throughout the event, FFA members participated in Career Development Events (CDE) and Leadership Development Events (LDE) and attended sessions where guests were honored and members listened to keynote speakers. Eighteen members of the Garden Spot FFA at Lampeter-Strasburg High School participated in events. During the Horse Evaluation CDE, FFA members solved problems related to a variety of equine topics, ranging from the nutrition and reproduction of horses to the tack/equipment

T

and feed used to care for horses. They also evaluated six classes of horses. In this CDE, ninth-grader Ava Immel placed third and received a gold medal; ninth-grader Sarah Firestone placed 10th, receiving a gold medal; and 10th-grader Sydney Albright placed 28th in the state, receiving a bronze medal. In the Veterinary Science CDE, members demonstrated their technical competency with small and large animals through a written exam, critical-thinking scenario questions, identifications, and hands-on practicums. Kylie Bryan, a freshman, placed 40th out of 81 participants. Sarah Blount, a 10th-grader,

placed first in the Junior Prepared Public Speaking LDE, receiving a gold medal. In this competition, students delivered an original fourto six-minute speech about a current agriculture-related topic. Blount’s speech was titled “A Constant Battle Over Milk.” A pair of 10th-graders received recognition in the Small Gas Engine CDE, where they had to complete a written exam, identify parts and tools, and use problem-solving and mechanical skills to fix an engine. Devin Miller-Baum placed 11th, and Jonathan Conrad placed 12th; both students received silver medals. Participants in the Agricultural

Communications CDE worked as a team of communication consultants to develop a written media plan and present the plan to a panel of judges. As individuals, they also had to apply what they had learned during practicums and complete a quiz and an editing exercise. The Garden Spot FFA team placed first, earning the opportunity to compete at the National FFA Convention in October. Garden Spot members took the top four individual spots, with Gracie Albright, 11th grade, placing first and Rachael Lee, 11th grade; Katie Ranck, 11th grade; and Melanie Cox, 12th grade, placing second, third, and fourth, respectively. All four received gold medals. See Garden Spot FFA pg 4

Robin Stauffer was presented with the Thaddeus Stevens College Distinguished Service Award at the Class of 2022 commencement on May 16. Stauffer is the executive director of High Foundation. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual’s outstanding achievements and significant contributions to Thaddeus Stevens College through creativity and dedication in serving students, advocacy and leadership promoting positive change at the college, and exemplary service to the college. Recipients demonstrate values consistent with college founder Thaddeus Stevens, who believed in the dignity, civil rights, and value of each human being regardless of race, sex, religion, or heritage. Stauffer was selected as the recipient of the award in recognition of her role in leading High Foundation’s focus on cultural and economic vibrancy and the foundation’s deep commitment to the Lancaster community. ing commitment to Thaddeus Stevens College has improved the college’s facilities and benefited its students, removing barriers to higher education with the goal of creating a more equitable future. Stauffer is a leader in the Lancaster community who has built, developed, and cultivated the relationship with the college, utilizing the foundation’s resources to support and further its mission. Research Farm Opens To Public

Penn State Extension’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SEAREC), 1446 Auction Road, Manheim, will be open to the public until Wednesday, Aug. 31, from dawn to dusk. This research farm is the site of dozens of vegetable, field crop, and environmental research projects; one of the largest flower trials in the country; and five Master Gardener-designed idea (demonstration) gardens. Master Gardener volunteers have designed, planted, and cared for five idea gardens: native plants, vegetable and herb, butterfly, potager, and raised beds. Members of the public can use these gardens to learn gardening techniques, discover novel plants, and get fresh ideas for their home and community gardens. There are also gardens at the pergola and the Welcome and Research Centers, as well as in-ground perennial and annual trials. The farm also includes Blooms and Butterflies - also known as Bees, Bugs, and Blooms - a large, established native

plant trial plot that is 10 years old. Through the years, a variety of research projects have been conducted in the plot, and Master Gardener volunteers continue to monitor and track pollinator activity there. Anyone who wants to beat the heat should visit early in the day as shade is limited. The best opportunities to view butterflies, bees, and other pollinators will be on warm, sunny days. Site maps and educational materials are available at the Welcome Center; visitors are asked to return the maps when they have finished their visit. Penn State’s Master Gardener program has been serving Lancaster County since 1988. Approximately 110 volunteers educate the public on sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship through a Garden Hotline, webinars and classes, demonstration gardens, and poison prevention programs in schools. To reach the Lancaster County Garden Hotline, call 717-394-6851 or email Penn State Extension’s research farm showcases a variety of plants, including flowers. LancasterMG@psu.edu.
