SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVIX • NO 12
Celebrating A Milestone Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation Plans Gala BY ANN MEAD ASH
Dave Perry (left), Trina Barr (center) and Sherry Mull (right) are preparing to serve the community with the GriefShare program.
Pequea Church To Offer Grief Support Program oss and grief are no small obstacles, and almost every community has experienced some type of tragedy that is felt throughout its foundation. Whether it is an individual experiencing loss or a community mourning as a whole, the journey of healing and growth can be a difficult undertaking. Pequea Church, located at 40 Church Road, Lancaster, will offer an 11-week GriefShare support group program to help those navigating grief. The program will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 23, and run weekly on Tuesdays until the final meeting on Nov. 1. GriefShare is led by Trina Barr, who first got the project underway in 2003 at Pequea Church. Barr
L
began her own journey with grief after the tragic loss of her younger brother and became involved with Hospice & Community Care’s bereavement program. “Because of my brother’s death, I knew I wanted to help people,” she remarked. “There weren’t very many support groups back then.” Barr became active in grief recovery efforts and was asked to lead the GriefShare program after tragedy shook the church community. Over the history of the program, the routine and goal have remained consistent. Each 90-minute session will begin with video presentations on different aspects of dealing with grief, followed by provided refreshments, group discussion and prayer. The program will conclude after 11 weeks with a group dinner and can-
dle-lighting ceremony. Although the vision and course have not changed, the program has welcomed additional leaders since its inception. Barr is now supported by two additional co-leaders, Dave Perry and Sherry Mull. Barr first came in contact with Perry and Mull after posting a need for additional leaders in the program; both had experienced substantial grief in their own lives and found help and community through GriefShare. Perry began attending after the loss of his wife, Carol, last year and received support from what he now sees as a second family. “Dave has been a real blessing,” Barr affirmed. “He has really inspired many in the group. He and Sherry co-lead with me, sup-
porting me through the sessions and driving discussion.” Mull similarly found refuge in the program after losing her mother and brother, and she then decided she wanted to help others find the same support she had received in the process of mourning. “ W hen I was asked to run GriefShare, I was scared. I prayed and prayed about it and God prepared me. I feel truly blessed because of the program,” Barr stated. She noted that community support for the program has been tremendous, and an anonymous donor has even volunteered to cover the expenses and workbook costs. To register or obtain more information, call the church office at 717-872-5679 or email Barr at jebarr@frontier.com.

The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation is known for attracting up to 6,000 visitors to each of its summer concerts - 30,000 for the July Fourth celebration - as well as offering an annual art festival, but looking ahead, the organization would like to be seen as more collaborative with other organizations. Toward that goal, the Lancaster County Food Hub, SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lancaster Conservancy, and the Spanish American Civic Association have been invited to have a part at upcoming concerts, and the art festival will feature up to five up-andcoming new area artists. “After 60 years, people are aware of our summer concerts and our art festival, and now if we can just extend that reach to other great community resources, that is a blessing for everyone,” said Tom Ellis, interim president of the foundation.

Lancaster County Office of Aging operates a program called PA Medi, formerly APPRISE. There are 52 PA Medi offices all over Pennsylvania. This group assists older adults with Medicare and health insurance questions all year round. Each fall, volunteer counselors from PA Medi will meet individually with beneficiaries who already have Medicare to review their Medicare plans. Some insurance companies make policy changes in fall and/or increase their yearly cost, making it worthwhile to review Medicare plans whether the plan stays the same or not. During open enrollment,

by well-known local architect Gregory Scott, whose firm originally designed the amphitheater. Scott will look back on the history of the iconic building, which began when the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city. The live auction of original art, which will benefit the foundation, will showcase members of the Echo Valley Art Group. A highlight of that portion of the event will be the sale of a commissioned piece created by artist Lisa Madenspacher. Her rendition of the amphitheater pays homage to the concerts and fireworks with which the building is associated. Another auction item will poke fun at the amphitheater’s long association with wild birds. “We have a bird feeder that was created as a fundraiser,” said Ellis, who noted that the roof of the feeder has the same profile as the amphitheater. “We are calling it an amphi-feeder.” The feeder was fabricated and painted by Viocity Group and donated by Woodstream Corporation. Food for the gala will be created by former White House chef John Moeller, known for owning and preparing cuisine at the Greenfield Restaurant and Bar.

The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) requires that all commercial and residential customers transporting waste to any of its facilities use a tarp to secure open loads. LCSWMA will now charge a monetary penalty for those who do not follow this protocol, and second offenders will be turned away. LCSWMA officials noted that according to Pennsylvania’s state and federal requirements, it is the law to tarp loads. The relevant Pennsylvania law states, “Loads must be covered with a securely fastened waterresistant cover that eliminates potential for littering and other nuisances.” Tarp-
ing is also part of the Lancaster County Municipal Waste Management Plan. Facility operators and owners such as LCSWMA are responsible for knowing and complying with all relevant laws, regulations, authoriza-
tions and permits to help avoid the environmental impacts and public health, safety and welfare issues associated with the transportation of solid waste. When transporting any waste, objects or materials in
an open trailer or vehicle, drivers should tie large objects directly to the vehicle or trailer, never overload the vehicle, check for possibilities of shifting and securely place a waterresistant tarp over the entire open load.
