Praying For A Miracle BY COURTNEY MENGEL
LSA
II Corinthians 5:7 reads, “I will walk by faith even when I cannot see.” This Bible verse is very important to West Lampeter Township resident Megan Fraver.
Until February 2020, Megan, a former teacher at Martin Meylin Middle School and Milton Hershey School, considered herself a normal, stay-at-home mom raising four kids. One day while grocery shopping in Willow Street, Megan
The Fraver family
noticed that the vision in her left eye had become blurry, so the next day, she visited her optometrist. Megan was initially treated for a scratched cornea, but when her symptoms didn’t improve, her doctor re-examined her eyes and discovered that Megan’s optic nerve was swollen. An MRI ruled out a tumor, but her medical practitioners were unsure what was wrong with her. Megan was told it was rare for a person’s other eye to be affected, but seven months later, she felt a haze in her right eye. She called her neuro-optometrist and was scheduled for more tests. “I have been diagnosed with ischemic optic neuropathy from unknown causes,” said Megan. This condition causes sudden vision loss due to a blockage of blood flow to the optic nerve. “At first, we could not believe that God allowed this to happen,” she said. “But we’re allowed to wrestle and be angry as long as we don’t stay there and give up on our faith.” In her condition, Megan wondered how she would raise a 10year-old, an 8-year-old, a 2-yearold, and a baby. “Over time, I came to accept blindness,” said Megan. “I feel as if God chose this to happen to me because He knew I could be an example of keeping faith during an incredibly difficult time.” Knowing there was no treatment available in the U.S. for her condition, Megan began to search for other options in foreign countries. That was how she came across the Fedorov Restore Vision Clinic in Germany. “Dr. Fedorov combines
cutting-edge electrical stimulation paired with patented vision therapy to improve vision clarity and better visual fields,” stated Megan. “I was skeptical because how was I to know it was legitimate?” Then one day, the clinic came up in Megan’s news feed on Facebook. It was a reshared post of a mother in Arkansas who wrote about her son’s experience after receiving treatment. Megan messaged the woman on Facebook, and one night, Megan and her husband, Matt, talked for two hours on the phone with the woman. “She encouraged us to go for it,” recalled Megan. “Her son is preparing for his second trip to Germany to help with his genetic disorder. Instead of seeing all black in both eyes, he now sees color!” In May 2021, Megan was approved to receive treatment at the Fedorov Restore Vision Clinic in Germany. After the Fravers discovered how much her trip and treatment would cost, her aunt started a GoFundMe, Megan designed T-shirts to sell, her dad fundraised with a produce stand, and Fashion Cents Consignment in Strasburg donated to Megan. Soon enough, with the help of friends, family, and the community, Megan raised enough money for her trip. Her treatment is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 23. “ We keep praying and keep believing that this was God’s plan all along,” said Megan. “This could be my miracle.” Megan will likely need two treatments. Historical Society Celebrates Stories Jean Kilheffer Hess, executive director of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), could not help but share a “fun fact” when asked about the organization’s upcoming annual Storytelling Night. “No one knows what the storytellers will say ahead of time,” divulged Hess, who explained that neither the
planners of the event nor the storytellers discuss story topics. “Interweaving of stories happens spontaneously,” noted Hess, adding, “Invariably it comes together in a beautiful way.” Storytelling Night, which was first suggested by an LMHS volunteer about 10 years ago, will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lin-

coln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. Hess said the format is simple, but carefully prescribed. “The storytellers alternate and each tells a series of four-minute stories,” she explained, adding that the event has proven popular for LMHS. The free presentation will also be livestreamed at www.bit.ly/AMN21. LMHS welcomes donations to support the event’s mission to preserve history through storytelling. According to Hess, the goal of the evening is to provide an engaging way to learn about both everyday and exceptional experiences of local Anabaptists. This year, Jesus Cruz, who has served as national program director of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and Myrna Smucker, former Lancaster Mennonite School teacher and author
of “The Bird-in-Hand Story,” were chosen to speak. Hess explained that each was invited because of his or her contributions to Mennonite communities. “Each brings rich life experiences,” she noted. “They have pursued very different professional work, but a common thread is caring for people and meeting their needs.” In addition to his work for MCC, Cruz has had a varied career, which includes being an associate pastor. His work in the financial services field has most recently led him to working as a consultant for a Lancaster organization that is opening a new credit union focused on underserved persons such as recent immigrants. Smucker earned her degree in education from Eastern Mennonite University before

About five years ago, Jenice Weaver and her husband, Glenn, saw that other school districts had ministry-based organizations that would allocate resources for families in need within the district. The Weavers soon realized there was a need for something similar in Lampeter-Strasburg, so they founded the nonprofit organization LS Together, whose motto is “pioneering life together.”
St. John’s Driving School, LLC
LS Together will host its annual back-to-school drive on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 8 to 10 a.m. in front of the Hans Herr Elementary School, 1623 Book Road, Lancaster. Like last year, supplies will be distributed in a drive-through format. Families will be asked what grades their children are going into so that LS Together can distribute supplies according to the needs of each grade. “We use a generic list from the school for each grade to put specific items in the backpacks,” See Pioneer Life pg 7

Announcing
Tuesday-Saturday 7am - 8pm Soup & Salad Bar Now Open Tues-Fri 11am - 8pm Sat 12pm-8pm
Our Heartfelt Thank You A few weeks ago we experienced a massive fire. We lost our barn and all the contents, ranging from hay and straw, to silage carts, feed mixer, a new skid loader and many priceless items, including a not yet fully restored ’55 Chevy. With the losses came small and then big blessings. Only one barn cat died, we got the handful of cows and a newborn calf out in time and our neighbor’s houses didn’t catch fire, thanks to the hard work of all the volunteer fire crews. We’re not the first to suffer losses from a fire and can’t imagine those who have suffered the loss of their homes or of loved ones.
Breakfast Buffet Open every Sat 7am - 11am
Our gratitude to and for: the volunteer fire crews who came quickly and worked tirelessly; all of our neighbors, friends and family who showed up the night of the fire and stayed; our two neighbors who smelled, heard and saw the fire and called 911 before we had a chance to call; all those who showed up with hugs and words of encouragement; the bouquets of flowers and flower beds planted; the prayers lifted up; the giving of time, resources and money without expectations; the meals provided; the offers of hay, straw, feed, anything we needed; those who showed up with trailers of equipment without being asked; the availability of animal housing offered up if needed; the rental shops that didn’t charge rent; all of those 70 plus folks who showed up the day of clean up and spent hours and hours sifting through ashes, sorting metal into dumpsters, going through what felt like a lifetime of belongings, hauling hay and straw out and those using crowbars to pull up barn floor, plank by plank, while dismantling beams in order to salvage the unscathed oak; our wonderful neighbors who prepared the food; and, the neighbors who are still tolerating the plumes of smoke and the smell of smoldering hay and straw weeks later.

We are humbled by the generosity of neighbors, friends and strangers. It is overwhelming to fully grasp how fortunate we are to live in a community that wraps its arms around you in a time of need. We started off writing thank you cards and then realized that there were so, so many helping that surely we would miss saying thank you to more than one special someone.
Catering For All Events! Weddings, Picnics, Party Trays, etc.
To all the people and all the deeds done, we don’t even know how to say thank you in a manner that is grand enough to meet the kindness bestowed upon us. We are simply amazed by the acts of kindness and greatness of giving. “Giving is a miracle that can transform the heaviest of hearts. Two people, who moments before lived in separate worlds of private concerns, suddenly meet each other over a simple act of sharing. The world expands, a moment of goodness is created, and something new comes into being where before there was nothing. True giving is not an economic exchange, it is a generative act. It does not subtract from what we have; it multiplies the effect we can have in the world.” ~ Kent Nerburn

The Google Form asks parents if their children need socks, underwear, or a clothing gift card to a local consignment shop. Clothing and gift cards will be distributed to families while supplies last. “We feel like if we can help supply the kids with what they need to go to school, they won’t feel quite as nervous about their first day,” said Jenice. “School can be stressful enough, so we want to give them confidence to start the year off strong and not worry about gathering materials for school.” To the families that participate in the drive, Jenice noted she wants them to feel supported by the community. “L-S is a family and family takes care of each other,” she stated. “We don’t want anyone to feel that they have to do this alone, and they can reach out to us if they ever have a need.” For more information about the back-to-school drive, email office@lstogether.org, search for “LS Together” on Facebook and select the Events tab. To learn more about LS Together, visit https://lstogether.org.
Support Group Sets Meeting BASIS, a support group for bereaved parents, will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. The topic will be “God Is Our Refuge and Strength.” For directions to the gathering, call Calvary Monument Bible Church at 717442-8161.

Rizzetta’s Tones To Close Concert Series
Otters Top New Holland In Season Finale
Rizzetta’s Tones will perform at the final free concert of the Strasburg Community Park’s “Sounds of Strasburg” concert series on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 p.m. Rizzetta’s Tones is a Celtic American band consisting of musicians who play “fraternal twin” hammer dulcimers, a silver flute, high and low whistles, alto and bass melodions, and a guitar. The band members often add button accordion, melodica, Greek bouzouki, mandolin, autoharp, and ukulele, as well as bodhran, djembe, and other percussion instruments. All members sing lead and backing vocals on songs. Rizzetta’s Tones’ repertoire includes original music and music from Ireland, Scotland, and the U.S., also drawing from the traditions of Sweden, Brazil, France, Hungary, and others. Admission is free. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on soft turf
The L-S Otters finished the regular season with a 233-197 win over New Holland on July 20. “Best times and hard-fought relay wins led to the victory,” said head coach Kylie Turner. Pequea Church, 40 Church Road, Lancaster, will offer GriefShare on Tuesdays, Aug. 31 to Nov. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the church’s lower level in Room 141. GriefShare is a biblically based and Christ-centered support group providing help and encouragement after the death of a loved one. Each 90-minute session includes a video and a time of sharing. The videos feature nationally recognized experts speaking on grief recovery topics such as “Is This Normal?” and “The Challenges of Grief,” along with “Grief and Your Relationships,” “Why?” and “Guilt and Anger.” Trina Barr and Sherry Mull will lead the sessions. Barr started her journey with grief after her younger brother took his own life. She attended a grief support program offered by hospice and found it so helpful that she began volunteering for hospice. In 2003, she started leading GriefShare at Pequea Church on a regular basis. She decided to take a break in 2017 after losing both her mom and another brother within three years. She said the time is right to offer this program again, after many people have experienced loss from
