Restart Training Center Ministry plans fall banquet

Restart

Training Center Ministry

(RTCM) will host its annual fall banquet on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. The event serves as a fundraiser for the Strasburg-based ministry, and it will feature live music, dinner and a talk from guest speaker James Reeves. The deadline to registerfor the banquet is Friday, Sept. 1, and registration is available online atwww.restartmin istry.org/events.

Doors for the banquet will open at 5:30 p.m., at which time the Amos Raber Family will begin a musical performance. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m., and prize drawings will be held during the meal.

The banquet will feature a talk from James Reeves, who is the

founding pastor of City on a Hill, a church in Fort Worth, Texas. For 38 years, Reeves grew a ministry at his church to offer resources for those who struggle with addiction and unhealthy behaviors. In addition to holding standard worship serviceson Sundays, the church offers other activities such as regular group meetings. There are 30 different groups that meet at the church weekly; each focuses on recovery from different types of addictions and traumatic experiences.

“My challenge is to go beyond someone’s behavior and look at the trauma beneath it,”Reeves said. “You want to learn how to be a good steward of your pain and how to allow it to result in something positive.”

This past year, Reeves retired from his role as City on a Hill’s senior pastor. He now travels to churches and ministries such as

Providing a support system for children

Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.

Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to grow into

well-adjusted adults.

“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”

With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through

adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

“We receive a good portion

of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”

COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.

“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide traumafocused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a

big reward.”

COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

This year, GriefShare will be using the fourth edition of the program. The latest edition has been overhauled to include topics that relate to suicide, loneliness, fear, sadness and anxiety, and it will detail methods that can be used to manage such issues. The new version of the program will also cover challenges that have been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

the program also include switching the length of its informational videos from 45 minutes to 30 minutes. Barr hopes that this change will allow the group to have more time for sharing and discussion during each meeting. The meetings will still be hosted by Dave Perry and Sherry Mull, who have served as group leaders for the program in the past.

Barr was inspired to introduce the program to Pequea Church after she attended a grief support group through Hospice & Community Care.

“These topics are important. People have been more isolated over these last few years from the pandemic,” said Trina Barr, who first introduced the program to Pequea Church in 2003. “Mental health is not often talked about in the same way we talk about other health issues, and there’s a need for it.”

This will be the first time that GriefShare has released a new edition since 2014, and the changes to

Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m. There is no charge.

Attendees should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.

Barr joined the group following the loss of her younger brother, and she found it to be a helpful resource as she navigated the process of mourning. She desired to share this experience with others and has organized GriefShare programs for nearly 20 years, taking a short break in 2017.

Due to a gift from an anonymous donor, the GriefShare program is free to sign up for. Registration will be accepted at any point during the program. To register, call the church office at 717-872-5679 or email Barr at jebarr@frontier.com.

Gap Relief Sale will celebrate 75th anniversary

The annual Gap Relief Sale will be held on Friday, Aug. 11, and Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The fundraising event will include auctions, hot meals and live music, and the proceeds will support the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

On Friday, the auction preview and pork roast dinner will begin at 4 p.m. The preview will be open until 6:30 p.m., and meals will be available to purchase for eat-in or takeout until 7 p.m. From 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., a member of MCC will speak alongside a special offering, followed by group singing. The auction will officially kick off at 7:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the event will begin with a country breakfast that will consist of pancakes, sausages and eggs. After breakfast, auctions will begin at various times in each of the buildings at the fairgrounds.

In block one, a household item and craft auction will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by a large furniture auction at 11 a.m. Special items to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sale will be available to bid on at noon, including a large quilt ornamented with the Gap Relief Sale logo. At 1 p.m., quilts and quilted wall decorations will be up for bids. In block two, farm equipment and workshop tools will be among the items auctioned off at 9 a.m. In block three, a sale of children’s items will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by an auction of lawn furniture, shrubbery and other outdoor items. In block four, any excess items from

the food stands will be available to purchase, including subs and pulled pork. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a bounce house and barrel train rides will be available to children.

The first sale was held at the farm of Leon Summers in Gap. The event was created by locals who wished to support MCC, and it was held every other year until 1990, when it became an annual event. The sale changed locations multiple times before permanently relocating to the Solanco Fairgrounds.

All of the event’s proceeds will benefit MCC, which is headquartered in Akron. MCC is an international ministry of Anabaptist churches that acquires resources for the purpose of offering relief to communities around the globe that are in need. The special offering on Friday will be used to fund MCC’s relief efforts in Ukraine.

The items that will be available during the sale have all been donated by individuals and local business-

es. Among the items is a restored 1951 Farmall tractor, provided by Double H Tractor Service in Ephrata.

“The sale gives the local community an easy way to support MCC while acquiring something you might need,” said Levi Glick, who is helping to coordinate the event.

To donate an item for the auction, interested parties may call 717-617-9746 to arrange for dropoff or pickup.

A new chapter for Joyfully Made Fellowship

For over 15 years, Tami Shaub has operated a ministry known as the A-Team at Wesley Church in Quarryville. The group began as a youth praise and worship band, but many of its members were no longer able to participate as they grew older and went off to college or began working full time. The remaining members of the group were primarily those with special needs, and they loved having an opportunity to enjoy music together through the program. Many of these members explained to Shaub that although they loved the music, the most important aspect of the group was the fellowship.

Shaub decided to officially create the A-Team to continue to provide her students with the

comradery they had grown to love. The group would meet regularly to share a meal and to participate in a lesson or activity that incorporated music. Over the years, Shaub expanded the program by integrating field trips, support groups for parents of children with special needs and special outings like group bowling sessions. The A-Team also had its own Sunday school class at Wesley Church, but it encountered challenges with aligning the members’ schedule, as some of their parents attended church elsewhere.

In May, Shaub took an opportunity to overhaul the A-Team by creating a nonprofit organization under the name Joyfully Made Fellowship. She began to look for a building to base the ministry out of, which she hoped would resolve

many of the group’s scheduling challenges. On June 1, Joyfully Made Fellowship officially acquired the building that formerly housed Mount Hope UMC, located at 75 Mount Hope Road in Quarryville. Joyfully Made Fellowship opened its doors to students in July, and the new facility allows the organization to offer a sensory-friendly worship service and comradery between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sundays. Parents are able to drop off their kids for the program and attend their regular service at another church.

“We are in an exciting transition with our group, and we know that our ministry will grow throughout the community,” Shaub said. “We hope to set a model for other churches and organizations to use as a template for creating more much-needed

Joyfully Made Fellowship will host an open house and ice cream social at its new location on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. The free event will be open to the public, and it will serve as a way to inform interested parties about

the ministry’s programs. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet the students, tour the building and enjoy complimentary frozen treats.

“Right now, this is a one-of-akind ministry, and we’re really excited about it,” Shaub said.

Cub Scout Pack 28 and Boy Scout Troop 28 will celebrate their 75th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Paradise Community Building in Paradise Community Park, 6 London Vale Road, Paradise. The event is open to the public, and all former Scouts and adult leaders are especially encouraged to attend. The event will include a Pinewood Derby, and attendees are invited to bring their car, no matter how old. Other activities will include a wooden boat regatta, box hockey games, a fire-building contest, hot dog roasting, and Scout patch and memorabilia displays. Food and drinks will be available. Admission is free.

RTCM to train them in programs specific to recovering addicts and survivors of abuse. “The first step is always to address the trauma from which your pain came,” Reeves said. “It’s also important to build community relationships and to hold yourself accountable after your time in (RTCM).”

RTCM was founded by Jaime Santiago and his wife, Pam. The ministry offers a residential program for men and their families to receive counseling and faith-based resources to overcome addictions. Strasburg Dance will begin its second year of classes on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St.

The pre-ballet classes, tailored for children ages 4 to 9, strongly emphasize classical ballet while introducing interpretive dance styles. Students learn individual poses and movements, which are woven into short dance numbers with choreography. Brief seasonal showcases and recitals allow young dancers to display their progress to friends, family, and loved ones.

Strasburg Dance uses the Montessori approach, focusing on ability rather than age with the aim of creating cohesive and sup-

SINGING SPRING FOODS

portive groups. Children of different ages and skill levels come together and often form friendships in the process. Teacher Ally Reitzel noted that students’ connections across age groups can foster compassion and growth, resulting in a decrease in competitiveness and an increase in camaraderie.

Strasburg Dance is dedicated to making dance accessible and flexible for all families. There is a monthly fee for the subscriptionbased classes, and families can join at any time. Additionally, Strasburg Dance aims to keep spring recital costumes affordable. For more information, visit www.strasburgdance.com or call 717-628-3914.
