Praying For A Miracle BY COURTNEY MENGEL

LSA B

II Corinthians 5:7 reads, “I will walk by faith even when I cannot see.” This Bible verse is very important to West Lampeter Township resident Megan Fraver.

Until February 2020, Megan, a former teacher at Martin Meylin Middle School and Milton Hershey School, considered herself a normal, stay-at-home mom raising four kids. One day while grocery shopping in Willow Street, Megan

The Fraver family

noticed that the vision in her left eye had become blurry, so the next day, she visited her optometrist. Megan was initially treated for a scratched cornea, but when her symptoms didn’t improve, her doctor re-examined her eyes and discovered that Megan’s optic nerve was swollen. An MRI ruled out a tumor, but her medical practitioners were unsure what was wrong with her. Megan was told it was rare for a person’s other eye to be affected, but seven months later, she felt a haze in her right eye. She called her neuro-optometrist and was scheduled for more tests. “I have been diagnosed with ischemic optic neuropathy from unknown causes,” said Megan. This condition causes sudden vision loss due to a blockage of blood flow to the optic nerve. “At first, we could not believe that God allowed this to happen,” she said. “But we’re allowed to wrestle and be angry as long as we don’t stay there and give up on our faith.” In her condition, Megan wondered how she would raise a 10-year-old, an 8-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a baby. “Over time, I came to accept blindness,” said Megan. “I feel as if God chose this to happen to me because He knew I could be an example of keeping faith during an incredibly difficult time.” Knowing there was no treatment available in the U.S. for her condition, Megan began to search for other options in foreign countries. That was how she came across the Fedorov Restore Vision Clinic in Germany. “Dr. Fedorov combines

cutting-edge electrical stimulation paired with patented vision therapy to improve vision clarity and better visual fields,” stated Megan. “I was skeptical because how was I to know it was legitimate?” Then one day, the clinic came up in Megan’s news feed on Facebook. It was a reshared post of a mother in Arkansas who wrote about her son’s experience after receiving treatment. Megan messaged the woman on Facebook, and one night, Megan and her husband, Matt, talked for two hours on the phone with the woman. “She encouraged us to go for it,” recalled Megan. “Her son is preparing for his second trip to Germany to help with his genetic disorder. Instead of seeing all black in both eyes, he now sees color!” In May 2021, Megan was approved to receive treatment at the Fedorov Restore Vision Clinic in Germany. After the Fravers discovered how much her trip and treatment would cost, her aunt started a GoFundMe, Megan designed T-shirts to sell, her dad fundraised with a produce stand, and Fashion Cents Consignment in Strasburg donated to Megan. Soon enough, with the help of friends, family, and the community, Megan raised enough money for her trip. Her treatment is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 23. “ We keep praying and keep believing that this was God’s plan all along,” said Megan. “This could be my miracle.” Megan will likely need two treatments. Due to its unpredictable spelling and challenging grammar, the English language is difficult to master, especially for those who learn it as their second language. Ever since the Naturalization Act of 1906 was passed, immigrants have been required to show proficiency in English to become naturalized citizens of the U.S. Starting on Tuesday, Sept. 21, Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The ESL program originated at another local church, but that church was unable to continue the program, so it was moved to Ascension. Depending on enrollment, four different levels can be offered: beginner, beginner intermediate, advanced, and See ESL Classes pg 10

Pequea Church Posts GriefShare Pequea Church, 40 Church Road, Lancaster, will offer GriefShare on Tuesdays, Aug. 31 to Nov. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the church’s lower level in Room 141. GriefShare is a biblically based and Christ-centered support group providing help and encouragement after the death of a loved one. Each 90minute session includes a video and a time of sharing.

The videos feature nationally recognized experts speaking on grief recovery topics such as “Is This Normal?” and “The Challenges of Grief,” along with “Grief and Your Relationships,” “Why?” and “Guilt and Anger.” Trina Barr and Sherry Mull will lead the sessions. Barr started her journey with grief after her younger brother took his own life. She attend-

ed a grief support program offered by hospice and found it so helpful that she began volunteering for hospice. In 2003, she started leading GriefShare at Pequea Church on a regular basis. She decided to take a break in 2017 after losing both her mom and another brother within three years. She said the time is right to offer this program again, after many people have experienced loss from the pandemic. Mull experienced the loss of both her mom and a brother within two years. She subsequently attended one of the GriefShare programs led by Barr. There is no cost for the workbook. For more information, call the church office at 717-872-5679 or email Barr at jebarr@frontier.com.

Library Announces Agreement Of Sale The Board of Trustees of Lancaster Public Library (LPL) recently announced the agreement of sale of the library building located at 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster. The building is under agreement to a group of investors who have strong ties to the community and who are purchasing the property for its ultimate use by Saint James Episcopal Church, located at 119 N. Duke St. The agreement precedes the eventual move by LPL to a new library location at Barney Ewell Plaza on Queen Street. The new building is intended to improve library services to the Lancaster community with expanded and improved interior and

exterior spaces, ADA compliance, and closer proximity to the heart of downtown Lancaster. Until the new facility is ready, the library will retain ownership of and continue to operate in its current location, serving approximately 211,000 Lancaster County residents as a community center for learning, When the library’s move is complete and the sale transaction is closed, which are both expected to occur within two years, the property may be converted to office use until Saint James has finalized its long-term plans for the building. In the meantime, Saint James will begin a discernment process to assess how the property will

The Associate Program at New Creations Studio is a comprehensive, hands-on experience that provides training in areas such as technical skills, guest handling, and business building. “Associates work hand in hand with the stylists and learn trust and confidence behind the chair with this program,” explained Brown. “This is a career that is very rewarding.” Brown noted that she is very thankful to be in the L-S community because it is like a big family. “We lost my aunt

in February, and the community just swarmed together and supported us,” she said. “That’s why we try to give back.” “I continue to pinch myself because this is our happy place,” stated Frankford. “There are so many hair salons and barber shops, but it’s not about competition. It’s about serving the community.” To learn more about New Creations Studio, search for “New Creations Studio” on Facebook or visit https://new creationsstrasburg.com.

Although not new to Strasburg, New Creations Studio Inc., Hair and Nail Design Boutique is new to 9 E. Main St. Last month, New Creations Studio celebrated its one-year anniversary in its new location, so owner and stylist Lisa Frankford decided to share her story with the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) community. Frankford worked from home as a cosmetologist while raising her family. In 2004, she opened her own salon at 6 S. Decatur St., which was known as Shear Changes Hair Design. In May 2007, Frankford’s daughter, Nicole Brown, graduated from cosmetology school and joined the team at Shear Changes. As time went on, Frankford realized that if she wanted to expand her business’ services, she would have to relocate to a bigger space. As a result, Frankford and her team moved across the street to 11 S. Decatur St. on Jan. 3, 2008, and renamed the salon New Creations Studio. This location

served the stylist team well for 12 years until July 2020, when the business relocated to 9 E. Main St. and updated its website with the help of Alaina Rowe Photography. “We took a step of faith and trusted God that this was where He wanted us,” added Brown. “God opened every door that needed to be open for us to make the move.” Frankford noted that New Creations Studio is a God-centered beauty salon. One of the goals of New Creations Studio is to support ministries that give back to the community, said Frankford. During their journey, Frankford and Brown connected with LS Together, a ministry-based organization that allocates resources for families in need within the L-S School District. “When there is a need, the L-S community comes together to fill that need,” stated Frankford. “None of us know what the future holds, and we look forward to being able to serve more.” In addition to serving the community, New Creations Studio has given future cosmetologists an opportunity to

In the program, 4-month-old puppies go to maximum security prisons for training with carefully screened inmates. The program gives inmates the opportunity to give back to their communities, as well as the chance to enjoy the affection and companionship that dogs are so eager to share with their humans. Male Named As LSO Board Chair The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has announced the appointment of Sara Male as chair of its board of directors. Male stepped into the role previously held by Mary Ellen Davis, who served the LSO as board chair from 2017 and in many capacities before that role. Male has performed in the LSO for 10 years, most recently as acting principal cellist. She also chairs the LSO’s education committee, providing insight and direction for its eight education initiatives. Over the last season, the LSO provided a wide variety of free online concerts and expanded its educational offerings to include musician interviews and a Link Up concert in partnership with Carnegie Hall. The LSO also launched a new program, StandPartners, which pairs elementary school classrooms with professional musicians to share performances and excite young minds about music. Male noted that the LSO aims to grow its education programs in the future,

and it will also meet four music director finalists as guest conductors next season. Male received an Associate of the Arts in Music degree from Victoria Conservatory of Music in Canada, where she won the Principal Emeritus Prize. She earned a Bachelor of Music with high honors from Rutgers University and a Master of Music from the Mannes College of Music in New York City. She is a chamber-music recitalist and soloist, as well as a founding member of the Newstead Trio and Duo Chiaroscuro. Male collaborates in chamber music programs with her husband, violist Peter Kenote, and performs not only with the LSO, but also with the Reading Symphony, Kennett Symphony, and Harrisburg Symphony. Male teaches private lessons and also instructs cellists at Franklin & Marshall College and Elizabethtown College. She has directed chamber music programs and was involved in the Pennsylvania Academy of Music’s accreditation by the
