This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the

Due to its unpredictable spelling and challenging grammar, the English language is difficult to master, especially for those who learn it as their second language. Ever since the Naturalization Act of 1906 was passed, immigrants have been required to show proficiency in English to become naturalized citizens of the U.S. Starting on Tuesday, Sept. 21, Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The ESL program originated at another local church, but that church was unable to continue the program, so it was moved to Ascension. Depending on enrollment, four different levels can be offered: beginner, beginner intermediate, advanced, and citizenship. Overall, lessons will depend on where the students are in their learning and what they need.
ESL classes will be offered at Ascension Lutheran Church.
“Every year is different,” said Barbara Walker, coordinator of the program. “You just don’t know who the Lord will bring through the door.” Before retiring, Walker was a reading specialist and worked with ESL students. Classes will run until May 2022. They are free and will
be taught by volunteers. Teachers will meet with students every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Classes will begin with a Bible verse and prayer. Teachers will follow a published curriculum. “I’m grateful to the Lord for starting this program,” stated Walker. “He will bring people
to our door.” There is no deadline to sign up for classes; students can enroll at any time throughout the program. Ascension welcomes volunteers. For more information, including to volunteer or to sign up for classes, contact Walker at 717-464-5683.

Love Your Creation At New Creations Studio Frankford worked from home as a cosmetologist while raising her family. In 2004, she opened her own salon at 6 S. Decatur St., which was known as Shear Changes Hair Design. In May 2007, Frankford’s daughter, Nicole Brown, graduated from cosmetology school and joined the team at Shear Changes. As time went on, Frankford realized that if she wanted to expand her business’ services, she would

Although not new to Strasburg, New Creations Studio Inc., Hair and Nail Design Boutique is new to 9 E. Main St. Last month, New Creations Studio celebrated its one-year anniversary in its new location, so owner and stylist Lisa Frankford decided to share her story with the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) community.

have to relocate to a bigger space. As a result, Frankford and her team moved across the street to 11 S. Decatur St. on Jan. 3, 2008, and renamed the salon New Creations Studio. This location served the stylist team well for 12 years until July 2020, when the business relocated to 9 E. Main St. and updated its website with the help of Alaina Rowe Photography. “We took a step of faith and trusted God that this was where He wanted us,” added Brown. “God opened every door that needed to be open for us to make the move.” Frankford noted that New Creations Studio is a God-centered beauty salon. One of the goals of New Creations Studio is to support ministries that give back to the community, said Frankford. During their journey, Frankford and Brown connected with LS Together, a ministry-based organization that allocates resources for families in need within the L-S School District. “When
there is a need, the L-S community comes together to fill that need,” stated Frankford. “None of us know what the future holds, and we look forward to being able to serve more.” In addition to serving the community, New Creations Studio has given future cosmetologists an opportunity to sharpen their skills. The Associate Program at New Creations Studio is a comprehensive, hands-on experience that provides training in areas such as technical skills, guest handling, and business building. “Associates work hand in hand with the stylists and learn trust and confidence behind the chair with this program,” explained Brown. “This is a career that is very rewarding.”

equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States. Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “The idea is for participants to think about the sacrifice those 343 men made that day,” said Yuill. “With everything else that’s been going on, I think we’ve all forgotten.” The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from
8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters will have the option of wearing turnout gear and carrying equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of one of the fallen firefighters as well as a T-shirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. Although encouraged, preregistration is not required because there will be sameday registration. To preregister, visit https://lancaster stairclimb.org/registration. Spectators are welcome. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs fund programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. For more information, visit https://lancasterstairclimb.org or email syuill@lancaster stairclimb.org. To learn more about the NFFF, visit www.firehero.org.
New Creation from pg 3 Brown noted that she is very thankful to be in the L-S community because it is like a big family. “We lost my aunt in February, and the community just swarmed together and supported us,” she said. “That’s why we try to give back.” “I continue to pinch myself because this is our
happy place,” stated Frankford. “There are so many hair salons and barber shops, but it’s not about competition. It’s about serving the community.” To learn more about New Creations Studio, search for “New Creations Studio” on Facebook or visit https://new creationsstrasburg.com.

said Kaminski, who noted that growth in that category is significant; however, Landis is not looking to just bring new residents to Lancaster. “We don’t want to push everyone away,” Kaminski noted. “We want to be intentionally inclusive in that neighborhood.” Kaminski noted that promotional pieces have been printed in both English and Spanish and that Elizabeth Soto is serving as cultural liaison to help Landis reach out to the local Hispanic community. “We know it’s a diverse neighborhood, and we want to keep it that way,” said Trout. To make that happen, Landis started the City Vision Campaign in May with a goal of raising $550,000 to be sure 10% of the apartments qualify as affordable housing. “The campaign is designed to take it to 60% to 80% of affordability,” said Trout, who explained that funds from the campaign will reduce the amount that will be borrowed and keep rents low for 10 years, after which it will be time to refinance. The campaign, which will run another year, will be implemented in phases, including in-person meetings and community gatherings with a multimedia presentation. Trout noted that the High Foundation has been a leader in the campaign with a $25,000 grant as well as an approximately $1.5 million loan, making them a social impact investment partner. When Landis Communities held the blessing of the ground at 239 W. King St., Lancaster, on July 7, representatives of local government, churches, Landis Communities, and Landis Quality Living were present to celebrate a well-defined mission that included both need and vision. “The idea (of Landis Place) is (to cultivate) abundant choices for seniors,” said Beth Trout, vice president of advancement and communications with Landis Communities. “ We know from Steeple View Lofts that we have a strong interest in people wanting to live in an urban walkable downtown,” said Ed Kaminski, who is the director of Landis Quality Living. Landis Place on King will be a seven-story mixed-use building, which is scheduled to be completed in August of 2022 and is designed with space for 79 apartments, 41 parking spots, a multi-ethnic restaurant, a nonprofit organization, and a physician’s office. The 55-and-up community will offer 49 twobedroom apartments and 30 one-bedroom plans, along with a terrace, fitness room, and community space. A community manager, a maintenance technician, and a care navigator, who will help residents with insurance, connecting to services, and pre- and post-procedure requirements, will be on-site. Landis Quality Living, which oversees a number of Landis Community satellites, including Steeple View Lofts and Mountain View Terrace, is investing more than $25 million in the area, banking on the downtown location, which offers a grocery store, a theater, and other activities within blocks. “We are looking to develop middle-market housing for older adults,”
