Conference will offer resources for suicide prevention
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition will hold its annual conference on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the DoubleTree Resort located at 2400 Willow Street Pike in Lancaster. The event will include a talk from a keynote speaker, breakout sessions and training resources on topics related to mental health and suicide prevention.
Registration will be available online until Saturday, Aug. 31, and it will include a lunch and snacks. To register, visit https:// mhalancaster.org/conference.
This year’s keynote speaker is Matt Dorgan, founder and chief executive officer of Building Bridges for Brianna. Dorgan created the organization after the loss of his 15-year-old daughter to suicide in 2020. Building Bridges
for Brianna, which is based in York, seeks to prevent suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury throughout local communities and to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in various breakout sessions during the conference, and each session will offer information on a specific topic. The sessions will feature discussions on how to use mindfulness to improve student executive functioning, the latest research on suicide prevention and various other mental health-related subjects.
In addition to the keynote address and breakout sessions, the conference will feature Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training. QPR functions as the mental health equivalent of CPR, and it serves as a tool to help identify when someone may be struggling

GriefShare, a free grief counseling program, will return to Pequea Church, 40 Church Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Sessions will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. every Tuesday from Sept. 3 to the final meeting on Nov. 5, which will include a luncheon and a candle-lighting ceremony. Registration will be accepted at any point during the program.
This year, GriefShare will offer afternoon sessions to accommodate people who may be unable
GriefShare
to attend the typical evening meetings. For the last 20 years, the program has exclusively held evening sessions.
The GriefShare program seeks to offer resources and support as those experiencing the loss of a loved one navigate the mourning process. The program’s weekly meetings also allow participants to meet others who have experienced similar challenges coping with grief. In the past, GriefShare sessions have drawn attendees from various parts of the Southern End, including the Millersville, Quarryville and Willow Street communities and adjacent areas.
Each session will incorporate informational material that is centered around scriptural teachings and Christian themes, including educational videos on various topics related to grief and mourning. In 2023, GriefShare updated its latest edition to highlight topics such as suicide, isolation and anxiety, as well as difficulties directly related to the coronavirus pandemic and its residual effects on members of the community. The latest edition also shortened the length of its informational videos to allow participants to have more time to discuss their experiences.
“A lot of people told me they appreciate the new video topics and longer sharing times. I think it helps with the unpredictability of grief,” said Trina Barr, who will facilitate the program along with Dave Perry and Sherry Mull.
The three community members have found support through the program after experiencing a personal loss. Barr introduced the program to Pequea Church more than 20 years ago after joining a grief support group in Quarryville via Hospice & Community Care. Barr had recently experienced the loss of her younger brother, and she was inspired to start the program to share her positive experience participating in the support group.
“(Perry, Mull and I) have all experienced loss. We have a heart for it because we’ve been through it,” Barr said. “When my brother died, there weren’t many places to go. Now there are a lot more groups, but many people like this program because it incorporates biblical teaching.”
For more information or to register for GriefShare, call the church office at 717-872-5579 or email Barr at jebarr@ frontier.com.

tickets will benefit various animal advocacy organizations. Each organization will operate a booth at the
SOLANCO SPOUTING&EXTERIORS
event to offer information about its mission and receive donations.
Veterinary students will be present at the event to offer services such as nail trimming and ear cleaning for pets for a fee, and Emmett Clay Glass Designs will hold a workshop for attendees to make resin craft jewelry. Proceeds from both the veterinary services and the resin crafts will benefit the participating nonprofits.
The participating
nonprofits serve all of Lancaster County and the surrounding area, but two organizations, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and Woerth It Hollow, are based in the Southern End. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a Millersville-based organization that specializes in the rehabilitation of squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs and other small woodland creatures. Woerth It Hollow, based in Kirkwood, operates a facility to offer equine therapy services to veterans and people with disabilities in addition to rehabilitating rescued
horses. Other participating organizations include Leo’s Helping Paws and Honey’s RAID, which seek to raise awareness of puppy mills, dog fighting and other forms of animal abuse. The groups also raise funds for medical grants for animals that have been abused or abandoned. Other participating rescues will include Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, Angie’s Stray Foundation, LaMancha Animal Rescue and Wagon Tails Farm Rescue.

Debbie Helm, owner of Britain Hill. “Right now is a crucial time for rescues because of weather-related incidents like storms and extreme heat, so many fosters and rescues are full.”
Helm, who owns rescued dogs herself, created the annual fundraiser four years ago due to her love for animals and passion for animal advocacy. Helm uses Whiskers, Wags and Wine as a way to help local organizations raise awareness of specific issues, as well as collect items that rescues need. Britain

Hill will accept donations of items from a wish list on its Facebook page. The list was created by the organizations participating in the event, and it includes items such as new and gently used pet toys, canned and dry pet food, harnesses, horse halters, antibacterial wipes and trash bags. Donors may leave items in the driveway of the vineyard up to and including the day of the event.

A Backyard Stream Repair Series of live webinars will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 27 to Sept. 10, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

MHA of Lancaster County has several initiatives that aim to decrease suicide rates in the area, including an upcoming campaign to raise awareness of gun safety. The organization also has several programs slated for September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month.

Strength training program set
Penn State Extension will offer an in-person, groupbased strength-training program for adults age 40 and up. Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together (LIFT) will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 10 to Dec. 3. There will be no class on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28.
Two locations will be available. Classes will meet at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., or 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Alternately, participants may choose to attend from 10:45 a.m. to noon at the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.
A free informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 9 to 10 a.m. in the training room at the Farm and Home Center. All new registrants and returning registrants who have not participated in the past six months are required to attend. The deadline to register for the program is Sept. 3.
LIFT is designed to promote improvements in functional fitness or the ability to perform activities of daily living with ease. Participants are encouraged to work toward achieving their own goals in a group setting. Each session includes an active warmup, eight core strength-training exercises, and a cool down. The program also includes basic nutrition information with an emphasis on increased fruit and vegetable intake. There is a fee. Some insurance policies may reimburse participants with 80% or greater attendance; people should check with their insurance provider for more information.
To register, call 877345-0691 or visit https:// extension.psu.edu/lift. For more information, contact the Penn State Extension Lancaster office at 717-394-6851 or email LancasterExt@psu.edu.
