Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will participate in a clothing drive in partnership with Danita’s Children to support communities in need in Haiti. The church will collect donations until the end of September in the form of clothing and monetary contributions, and will it post an Amazon wish list for other specific items that are Ascensionneeded.Lutheran Church first began supporting Haitian communities with mission trips in 2007 and started a program to assist Haitian students as they attended college in the United States. “The program was something we really felt called to do through the church,” said Kelly Moore, a member of the church and organizer of the clothing drive. “Education is so important, and it’s so hard for them to get. The whole idea of the program was to support students so they could in turn support their own communities.”

The 34th annual rubber duckie race and festival will return on Sunday, Sept. 11, at Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Festivities will begin at 2 p.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. The rain-or-shine celebration will include a variety of games and arts and crafts activities as well as several food trucks to provide food and drinks available for purchase. There will be no charge for attendance, and participants may sign up for a duck to enter in the race on the day of the event.
Both days of the auction will begin with food that is made from scratch and sold by members of the Amish community. Handmade doughnuts, sticky buns, pretzel logs and more will be provided by multiple local families as a way to give back to Hospice & Community Care for the services it offers the area. “Hospice cares for several Amish community members. Patients and their families are able to stay at home and dictate the care they want,” said Amy Lewis, director of philanthropy for Hospice & Community Care. “It’s very significant the Amish community can help us in that way. Their food sales account for a huge portion of the auction’s revenue each year, and their milkshakes are rival to none.” Both lunch and dinner will also be available to purchase later in the day.

Multiple specialty auctions will begin following breakfast, held simultaneously throughout the day in five separate buildings. The auctions will not be limited to one category; the event will include auctions for tools, gift baskets, gently used items, handmade quilts and sports memorabilia, to name only a few. “You can find anything you could possibly think of,” said Lewis. “If you aren’t interested in an auction, you can just pop into the next building and find so many different things.”
Three cars will be auctioned this year, and previous years’ auctions have seen the sale of boats, jet skis and campers. At 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 5, a winner’s name will be drawn for a giveaway of a 2022 Ford Mustang: tickets to enter may be purchased at the event. For those interested in supporting Hospice & Community Care without purchasing an item at an auction, the event will offer an opportunity to purchase a “day of care” from the organization. The purchase will fund an entire day of service for a patient in hospice care. The auction is the largest fundraiser for Hospice & Community Care and raised over $800,000 last year. “Our decisions about who we’ll care for don’t have to be made based on how patients can pay for care,” said Lewis. “Because of community support, we’re able to prioritize making sure service is available for anyone.” Hospice is a locally owned

Earlier this year, the Friendship Heart Studio was offered an opportunity to create a mural on the side of Rachel’s Café and Creperie. Located at 201 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, this bright yellow building will now be the home of the studio’s second mural project. Beginning in September, Friendship Heart Artists and local partnered artists will begin a “Springtime in Paris” inspired design created by seven Heart Artists. The Heart Artists’ first mural project took place in September 2021, when some of the Heart Artists collaborated with local artists and Lancaster resident Colin Morrel in creating a work of art titled “The Garden” on the 300 block of North Mary Street in Lancaster city. The Circle of Friends Academy provides an environment for the development of children between the ages of six weeks and 5 years, through education that is both social and emotional. Beginning with the infant room, the facility focuses on children’s motor skills and sense development. Once in the toddler room, kids are introduced to a schooling environment and are provided opportunities to cultivate their social skills. Finally, staff in the prekindergarten room aid those enrolled with problem solving and encourage them to build peer relationships in preparation for kindergarten. At 5 p.m., hundreds of rubber ducks will be dropped into the Conestoga River, beginning the traditional race and highlight of the festival. Competing owners of the fast and furious waterfowl will be eligible to win prizes; several different packages are available to sponsor a duck for entry in the race. Additionally, multiple sponsorships are available to businesses looking to support the event and advertise. Those who purchase packages of racing ducks will receive souvenir ducks that they may take home. The event is one of the largest community fundraising events in the county, with all proceeds benefiting the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The organization supports nearly 4,000 young people with physical therapy, speech therapy and behavioral health services from birth to age 21. “We evaluate children when they come in and see what they need,” said Tara Zilling, director of community fundraising for Schreiber. “Our goal isn’t only to make sure the kids can thrive, but that their families can as well.” Children diagnosed with autism, attention deficit and anxiety disorders and trauma receive care through sessions with therapists who work with them both one-on-one and in conjunction with their entire family.

The first beneficiary of the program was Marie-Claire Charles, who studied at Millersville University from 2009 to 2014 and went on to earn her master’s degree in business administration. She returned to Haiti in 2020, where she became the director of operations for Danita’s Children. “Marie-Claire Charles is exemplary of the student program’s goal to help students support their communities,” said Moore. “She began organizing the clothing drive and enlisted Ascension’s help. She’s doing really good work,” Two other students have received educational assistance through the program in addition to Charles; however, Moore noted that the church has been unable to continue many of its endeavors in recent years due to COVID-19. “We’ve veered away from hosting students but want to become involved again. We hope this is the first of many partnerships with Danita’s Children,” said Moore. Danita’s Children is an organization with the goal of caring for and supporting impoverished and orphaned children throughout Haiti by assisting with educational, physical and emotional needs. Although headquartered in the village of Ouanaminthe in the northeast region, Danita’s Children provides nutritional, medical and dental care throughout the country. The organization was founded by CEO Danita Estrella-Watts, who first visited Haiti on a mission trip at the age of 11. She returned 25 years later with modest financial support from her church and the goal of caring for those in need throughout the country. Majs. Sue and Tom Hinzman have been appointed to lead The Salvation Army Lancaster Citadel. The Hinzmans have served as officers in The Salvation Army for the past 34 years in places such as northeast Ohio, central Kentucky, greater New York and eastern Pennsylvania. In 2019, Sue and Tom were presented with the “Key to the City” in Lexington, Ky., for their service and leadership in that community. Sue has served as a coach and mentor for younger officers. She homeschooled all three of her and Tom’s children from elementary school through high school while maintaining her full-time ministry as a Salvation Army officer. Tom was selected as one of Mahoning Valley’s Most Influential People in Youngstown, Ohio, and received the Man of the Year Award in Salem, Ohio. Later he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Salem Ohio Rotary Club for his outstanding service to the community. He has led emergency disaster teams from northeast Ohio in disasters such as the 1993 flood in St. Louis; the 1994 USAir Flight 427 crash near Aliquippa; 9/11 at Ground Zero; and Hurricane Katrina in Baton Rouge, La., in 2005. Sue and Tom were both born and raised in Beaver Falls. After attending high school together, they married and started their journey as one in ministry and mission in The Salvation Army. They entered The Salvation Army’s School for Officers’ Training in 1986 and were commissioned and ordained as officers in 1988. They have three sons - Jeremy, Brennen and Christopher - and five grandchildren.
