Putt for Education will support programs for local schools

The 33rd annual Putt for Education mini golf fundraiser will take place on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Village Greens, 1444 Village Road, Strasburg. Proceeds from the event will benefit Junior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA), which is gearing up for another year of educational programs it offers in schools across Lancaster County and the surrounding area.
“Our main goal is to give students a taste of all the different things out there in the world.”
Teams of four may sign up for one of three tee times, which will be 9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Twenty-four teams will begin golfing 24 holes at each tee time, and the team in each time slot with the best score will receive a trophy. Registration will include lunch and tickets for various prize drawings, which will feature gift baskets and items donated by local businesses and restaurants. Golfers may also participate in a contest to chip a ball into a hat to receive a prize. Different prizes will be offered during each time slot. Registration will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 27, while spaces are available. To register, visit www .jascpa.org/putt-for-education.
Putt for Education serves as JASCPA’s largest fundraiser of
the year. The event not only helps the organization sustain the many programs it provides schools throughout the year, but it allows JASCPA to offer its programming at no cost to schools. Specific programs are offered at different grade levels, but each activity falls under one of three educational pillars: financial
literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. “Our main goal is to give students a taste of all the different things out there in the world,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “We want them to realize not every pathway you go down requires a four-year degree. There’s a lot of options available,

The first day of school can be an exciting time for many children; the start of the academic year sets the stage for countless opportunities to make friends and explore new subjects. But the first few weeks of classes can also be a stressful time for students as they transition to a different schedule and acclimate to the change of pace. On the first day of the 2024-25 school year,
many students in Lancaster County were greeted by a special staff member: a facility dog that has been trained by United Disabilities Services (UDS) to help kids overcome the anxiety and stress of the school day.
Dogs trained by UDS specialize in a few key areas, but the organization has seen a growing trend in the number of local school districts requesting canines for their classrooms. These facility dogs are placed

In 2009, Lynda Charles organized a bake sale to raise money for her sister-in-law and her co-worker. The women had recently received diagnoses of breast cancer, and the treatments prevented them from receiving an income or insurance from working. The bake sale raised more than $9,000, and it prompted Lynda and her husband, David Charles, to create Mountville-based nonprofit Help The Fight. Fifteen

decided to make the first fundraiser a bake sale to enable local residents to support the cause regardless of their income levels.
“I think many people have rallied behind us because the money we raise stays in the community,” Dailey said. “Our board of directors is also totally volunteer-driven, and everyone feels passionately about the cause.”
The funds raised from the annual banquet directly benefit breast cancer patients in the local community. Help The Fight provides Lancaster County residents with what the organization calls gap funding, which entails financial support to help recipients pay for household bills as well as medical expenses. Many Americans’ insurance benefits are provided by their employers, and breast cancer patients often lose their insurance while undergoing treatment because their treatment prevents them from working fulltime.
Help The Fight is always accepting volunteers to help with events and to raise awareness of its mission to support breast cancer patients. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact the office or visit Help The Fight’s main location at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville.

in schools to help create a calming learning environment, and they receive special training to comfort students who struggle with anxiety and to help de-escalate emotional outbursts. Over the last five years, UDS has received more applications for facility dogs than ever before; the organization began talks with the School District of Lancaster to place dogs in its schools downtown, and these special canine helpers can be now found in nearly every school district in the county.
UDS began training 16 new puppies this year, and it invests upward of $25,000 per dog over the course of its training. To sustain its service dog programs, UDS holds an annual golf tournament. The event took place on Aug. 16 this year, and it was the first time the fundraiser had a full flight of 144 golfers. The tournament raised more than $65,000 for UDS, which is a $10,000 increase from last year. “I am beyond proud. We exceeded all
October
expectations,” said Lori Breece, UDS service dog manager. “Starting out strong in the new fiscal year puts us in a good position to continue our work through the winter months when things usually slow down.”
This is the fourth year UDS has hosted a golf fundraiser. A few key changes were made to enhance golfers’ experience and to keep the pace of play moving swiftly, and the event was shortened from six hours to five hours. UDS attributes the growing success of the fundraiser to the growing demand for dogs, as well as new partnerships with local businesses and sponsors.
In addition to the funds raised by the golf outing
and local sponsors, UDS relies on numerous volunteers to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog must complete a 22-month training process, and volunteers assist by walking dogs and taking them home for a weekend to get a break from the kennel. “I can’t overstate how important volunteers are. Without them, we can’t bring in new puppies and they don’t get enough socialization during training,” Breece said. “We’re always looking for people to help with whatever they can, even if it’s just walking a dog for an hour. There’s no commitment.”

For BOH, cars are vehicles to transport its mission
BY JEFF FALK
It’s broadening horizons. It’s seeking to reach more people. It’s attempting to do a greater good.
Blessings of Hope (BOH) is expanding its mission.
The local nonprofit’s upcoming car show represents the next step in BOH’s continuing evolution. Because it believes what it does is important, BOH seeks to share its purpose with everyone it can reach.
“We’re here to serve the community,” said Darek Raguza, who’s been BOH’s director of development since October of 2023. “We’re doing events to get people educated and energized about the mission. We want to make connections and spread the word about what we do.”
BOH will conduct its inaugural car show on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Stormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The day’s festivities will begin with vehicle registration at 9 a.m., and prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m.
The event is open to the public, and no fee will be charged for admission.
“This event is a fun-raiser as well as a fundraiser,” said Raguza. “An event like this has a very energetic atmosphere. People will be checking out the cars, and you can see the smiles on the owners’ faces when people take pictures and ask questions. For the owners, these classic cars are like their babies. They put a lot of money into keeping these cars in pristine condition. They’re their pride and joys. But beyond the impressive car display, the true highlight of the day will be the spirit of community and generosity.”
More than 20 vehicles, everything from vintage muscle cars to sleek, modern
sports cars - even a 1924 Model T - are expected to be on hand. Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories, including farthest driven to reach the show, best paint job and most likely to get pulled over by law enforcement.
Organizers of BOH’s car show are hoping to raise $5,000. All proceeds from the event will go to the organization’s Outreach Support Fund Partnership program, which empowers ministries to serve underprivileged communities by providing nutritious packed food.
“Overall, the goal is to address food discrepancies in our community and educate people about how they can help through donations and volunteering,” said Raguza. “Through special events, we’re trying to reach individuals who aren’t familiar with the mission of Blessings of Hope.”
BOH, which seeks to use excess food to battle hunger, operates facilities and warehouses in Leola, East Petersburg, the city of Lancaster and Campbellsville, Ky. The local nonprofit also introduced its inaugural golf outing at Foxchase Golf Club in May - its fifth such annual community outreach eventwhich raised $15,000 for its mission.
“There’s a growing need,” said Raguza. “There’s so much food being wasted and thrown away. It’s all good, fresh products that stores can’t accept but we can. We distribute to those in need. Everyone thinks we’re a food bank, but we’re a logistics hub. We’re able to receive large shipments of food products, and we break them down into smaller portions. We work with other ministries and food banks.”

Bird club sets meeting
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The program will be “Ears in the Sky: Using Drones to Study Songbirds,” presented by Andy Wilson of Gettysburg College and his undergraduate students.
Uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, have now been widely used in ecology and environmental monitoring for several years. Wilson’s research program with undergraduate students at Gettysburg College aims to develop methods for monitoring bird sounds by UAS. His research shows that drones can be a highly efficient way of counting

The Student Historian program provides an opportunity to learn the art of interpretation in an immersive, hands-on environment.
The program will take place from mid-September to mid-May, with weekly sessions on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. From January onward, meetings will shift to every other Thursday, offering flexibility for students’ busy schedules.
The Student Historian program includes the opportunity to be a part of the Cloister’s Lantern Tours, a signature theatrical event held during the holiday season - from Friday to Monday, Dec. 27 to 30, this year. Student Historians will also have the opportunity to assist with special events and programs throughout the year.
To kick off the 2024-25 program, an informational session will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ephrata Cloister Visitor Center. The session is open to new and prospective participants, as well as their parents. Registration is requested by contacting Dan Roe, museum educator II, at daroe@pa.gov or 717-733-6600.

songbirds and other vocal species, and they can be quickly deployed to places that are difficult to access.
Wilson has been a birder since age 9, encouraged by his parents and an elementary school teacher in his hometown of Sheffield, England. After working with the British Trust for Ornithology for 10 years, Wilson came to the U.S. to attend graduate school at Penn State University, where he earned a doctorate in ecology. He was data analyst and lead editor of the “Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania,” and he chairs the steering committee for the third edition of the book. He also serves on the Maryland/District of Columbia Records Committee, and he is chair of the environmental studies department at Get-
tysburg College. The program is free and open to the public. To learn more, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717. Information about the LCBC is available at www.lancasterbirdclub .org, www.facebook.com/ lancasterbirdclub, and www.instagram.com/ lancasterbirdclub.

raise awareness of mental health and the benefits that art and creativity can have.
