EPC will celebrate 70th anniversary with community event
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster. Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue and Homage. Guests may enjoy
complimentary ice cream from Kreider Farms while supplies last.
Live entertainment will be provided by Blessing & Fowler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Comprising musicians Zach Blessing and Nate Fowler, the duo performs soulful tunes and classic hits throughout central Pennsylvania. The event will also feature a live broadcast from WJTL from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local mascots Johnny from Achenbach’s Pastries and Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers will make an appearance.
The open house will feature a variety of yard games and activities for children, including face painting and balloon twisting, and Cherry Hill Orchards will provide pumpkins for kids to decorate.
Guests may participate in several prize drawings during the open house, and prizes will

Beyond making services available to veterans, the Lancaster Vet Center (LVC) has a desire to make sure those benefits are being used. LVC wants to serve veterans in much the same way that veterans served others.
“Some veterans will say, ‘Why me? Why do I deserve this?’’’ said Phil Grant, who’s been LVC’s director since
February of 2022. “The reason is because your service qualified you for these services. There’s no fee. There’s no cost. The eligibility doesn’t expire. They earned it through their time in the military.”
“Our motto is ‘Connection, Camaraderie, Community,’” continued Grant. “We want to live up to that. When you come here, you’ll be able to connect with your vet community and build
When you’re young, the world is full of adventure. Children’s imaginations can make digging holes in the yard feel as exhilarating as an archaeological dig, and with some creativity and a few sticks of sidewalk chalk, a driveway can transform into an intergalactic space vessel. Many adults grow out of the tendency to explore the wonders of everyday life that was enjoyed by their younger selves, but Adam Zurn, a local teacher and real-life adventurer, is an exception.

In April, more than 700 history buffs participated in Uncharted Lancaster’s fourth annual treasure hunt, which entailed a five-week quest to find a statue of a golden osprey. During the game, teams of treasure hunters worked together to answer riddles and to solve puzzles related to local history, slowly uncovering the coordinates of the statue and a cash prize. The annual scavenger hunt also serves as a fundraiser; this year, it raised around $4,200 for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and roughly $500 for LancasterHistory.
In addition to organizing the annual treasure hunt, Zurn offers a list of adventures on the Uncharted Lancaster website. Each adventure takes participates to historical sites, caves and ruins found throughout the Southern End and other remote parts of the county to discover prizes. Uncharted Lancaster’s adventure page also features “side quests,” scenic destinations that offer a hike on a beautiful trail as their reward. The adventures are self-guided, but Zurn tests each one before he publishes it on his website along with recommended provisions and a fedora rating to denote how difficult the route
“I think a lot of people - including myself - neglect our own local history. You take things for granted when you grow up around them,” said Zurn, a native of Susquehanna County. “Being a transplant in Lancaster, I’m always asking questions that make me want to peel back the layers and learn more about the area.”
Zurn has always had a love for history and an adventurous spirit, part of which he credits to watching iconic treasure-hunter movies such as “Indiana Jones” and “National Treasure.” But the idea for Uncharted Lancaster started in 2018, when Zurn had a conversation with a co-worker about his dog-walking routine. Zurn shared some of his favorite places to walk his golden retriever, including the Enola Low Grade Trail and Shenk’s Ferry, and his co-worker asked if he had ever visited the old cemetery nearby. With only a few details and vague information about the graveyard available online, Zurn spent several weeks combing through the area until he discovered the elusive location, which contained gravestones dating back to the 1700s. “It became a recurring thing in Lancaster; Google has no idea about these places, so I decide I’m going to find it,” Zurn said.
Zurn said he’s already prepping for next year’s treasure hunt, which will entail a quest to find the lost treasure of the Buzzard Gang of the Welsh Mountains.

that camaraderie. That’s what we’re striving for.”
Located at 1817 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, the LVC serves United States military veterans through oneon-one counseling, group therapy, veteran events and outreach programs. A branch of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and affiliated with the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital, LVC also works with other outside organizations to resolve any difficulty a veteran might encounter.
“We are here to help veterans and their families readjust to life after their experience in the military,” said Grant. “It’s a lot of moving pieces. We want to help the community know who we are and what we do. We work with veterans for very specific treatment plans. We maintain relationships in the community to get them a higher echelon of care if that’s necessary.”
LVC serves between 80 and 100 veterans from Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties each month. According to a 2021 census, those counties are home to a total of 26,351 veterans.
“We have vets who have been in combat,” said Grant. “We have some vets who are out of active duty and just want to connect with the community. Some have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Some are just trying to successfully transition from the military and move on. It’s a wide swatch.”
“Once veterans know we exist, some will determine it’s not something they really need, and they’ll spread the word,” added Grant. “These benefits exist because people use them. If they weren’t used the funding would
disappear. No one is taking a service away from someone else. Some vets don’t need the services. Some are good right now and can come back if they need to.”
One of 12 veterans’ centers in the state, LVC was established in 2010. As a whole, the veterans’ center program was established in 1979 and now operates 300 branches nationwide.
“We want to give veterans a place where they can come so they can live their best lives, not just for themselves but also for their families,” Grant said. “It’s not just for them; it’s also for everyone in their circle. For the veteran community in general, it’s sometimes hard to come to the table and trust that systems are going to do what they say they are going to do. Where we could do a better job is pounding the streets, getting the word out and showing the veteran community they can trust us.”

“Frozen JR.” shares message of the power of love
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Love can conquer all, and that message will take the spotlight when Susquehanna Stage presents “Frozen JR.” The show will be performed at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates between Friday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 21.
Based on the popular Disney movie, “Frozen JR.” tells the story of two sisters, one born with magical powers and one without, said Brielle Grove, who portrays Elsa in the show.
“Anna and Elsa grow up together, but when they were children, there was an accident with the powers, and Elsa hurt her younger sister, and they slowly separate after their parents pass away,” she explained. “The whole show is basically Elsa learning how to control her powers and also share them with her kingdom and embrace it.”
Like the movie, “Frozen JR.” features well-known songs such as “Let It Go,” “Fixer Upper” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” The stage version, which is a shorter show designed for young audiences, also includes new songs, including “Hygge,” which is performed by Oaken and his family.
Performing in the show is exciting, said Jordyn Good, who plays Olaf, but it also comes with a bit of pressure.
“Everybody knows these characters,” she said. “Olaf is happy and fun, so you just have to be happy and fun. It’s kind of difficult to be the way Olaf would act, but then to put it into your own character. You just have to have fun with it.”
For Brielle, an eighth-grader in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, mastering the song “Let It Go” has been challenging, but she’s up for it.
“I’m definitely nervous about it, because it’s such a well-known song, so there’s a bit of pressure,” she said. “But it’s also really fun to sing it, especially in your own way. Getting to sing it my own way is super fun.”
She’s also working hard on mastering a difficult quick change, when her regular dress transforms into Elsa’s snow queen outfit during the song.
“The quick change is kind of stressful, but at the same time, it’s going to be so fun and cool, especially for the little ones in the audience to be like,
‘Whoa! How’d she do that?’” she said.
“Frozen JR.” features a cast of more than 50 students and is part of the theater’s Children’s Workshop programming. Students range in age
from 7 to 14 years old.
Along with characters made famous in the movie, the stage show includes a dance ensemble called the Snow Chorus, Brielle shared. “They follow me through almost all my songs,” she said. “They do a lot of fun, beautiful, elegant dancing.”
Many of the students in the production, including Brielle and Jordyn, have participated in Susquehanna Stage’s workshop performances before.
Cast members (from top) Brielle Grove, Cameron Davis, Phoenix Blimline and Oliver Kokus invite people to a performance of “Disney’s Frozen JR.”
“It’s so fun being a part of this theater,” stated Jordyn, an eighth-grader who attends Donegal Junior High School. “Anything we do here is so fun.”
Added Brielle, “If your kid ever expressed wanting to do something like this or loves singing, loves acting, I would definitely recommend starting here because it’s such a fun experience.”
Both girls invite audiences to come to the show for an entertaining hour of singing and dancing on stage.
“If you grew up watching the movie, it’s really fun to see it come to life on stage,” Jordyn said. “It’s definitely a family show, so if you have children, come see it. Who doesn’t love ‘Frozen’?”
“Frozen JR.” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 13, 14, 20 and 21, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 21 and Sunday, Sept. 15. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

The prize drawing will also feature tickets to local attractions such as American Music Theatre, Field of Screams, Decades and Go ‘N Bananas.
Attendees will have an opportunity to look behind the scenes at EPC during a self-guided tour of the plant, which will offer a close-up look at each department and how the company’s publications, including weekly newspapers, are made.
Multiple community organizations and local first responders will be present at the open house, including a firetruck from West Hempfield Fire & Rescue, an officer from East Hempfield Township Police Department and the Lancaster County 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club. Representatives from local chambers of commerce serving Lancaster, including the Lancaster Chamber, the Mount Joy Area Chamber, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber and Northern Lancaster County Chamber, will also be in attendance.
“In the third generation of this company, it’s important for us to continue the legacy of what was started,” said Jocelyn Engle, EPC’s publisher. “It’s all about supporting local organizations and understanding what serves our communities in each area.”
