Railfans and trainspotters show their love for locomotives in a variety of ways; some individuals enjoy traveling far and wide to see unique train cars with their own eyes, and others enjoy taking a local subway for the ride instead of the destination. One of the most popular pastimes among train connoisseurs is the assembly of miniature railroads, but these intricate displays are not confined to the safety of the indoors.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will hold its 17th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will feature a self-guided tour of five stops located throughout Lancaster, including displays in Lititz and Manheim as well as a stop in Wrightsville. Each stop will highlight an elaborate, outdoor display of operating model trains in the homeowner’s yard or garden. A list of the gardens’ addresses will be available after
a ticket is purchased to allow individuals to plan their route in advance. A volunteer from the museum will also be stationed at each home to share information about the museum’s programs and displays, and participating homeowners will be present to run their trains and to answer questions.
“Some homeowners incorporate water features or landscaping into their models. One of the most interesting layouts this year moves through the natural habitat of the owner’s backyard,” said Railroad Museum program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “What we are always trying to do is highlight all the work people have put into developing these beautiful layouts. This hobby requires a lot of work.”
One might consider outdoor model railroading to be the extreme sport of the hobby. Individuals who design outdoor layouts not only need to navigate the landscape of their yards or gardens, but they also must
consider elements of nature when building the model. Factors such as heavy rain, strong wind and curious local wildlife pose a threat to outdoor train models that indoor displays are protected from.
In the past, several local retirement communities have participated in the Garden Railways Tour. Myers said many model owners adapt their layouts to a new home after moving, which requires them to get creative with how they arrange the display. “It’s always neat to see people using the spaces they’re allotted at home,” Myers added. “Even if their living situation has changed, they don’t have to give up hobbies and pursuits they enjoyed in the past.”
A limited number of tickets are available to purchase in the gift shop of the Railroad Museum, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. Tickets will also remain available online until the start of the event. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit www .rrmuseumpa.org.
Colemanville Church will celebrate 175th anniversary with community events
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In 1849, members of a church in Conestoga Township gathered to create a place of worship on a piece of land donated by Mary Jane Ross, the wife of Edward Coleman. The group constructed a brick building the same year, and the congregation comprised by a mere 30 members. By 1924, the church’s community had grown to include nearly 50 members. Almost a century later, the congregation of what is now Colemanville Church is as large and vibrant as ever, encompassing members from the Millersville, Willow Street and Lampeter areas.

The experiences of fostering and adopting children can be both challenging and rewarding. They’re experiences that COBYS can both enhance and make more manageable.
Louis and Melissa Zoeller have been married 16 years, and they are the parents of seven kids, two of whom are their biological offspring and five of whom they
adopted through the help of COBYS Family Services. For the Zoellers, who have affectionately dubbed their family “The Zoeller Bunch,” it’s sometimes a hectic, topsy-turvy existence, but one that they have no regrets about.
“If there was one thing that brought (Melissa and me) together, it was that we felt God was calling us to adopt,” said Louis. “It was the one thing we could agree upon. When we got

Colemanville Church, 210 Colemanville Church Road, Conestoga, will celebrate its 175th anniversary with various community events on Friday, Oct. 18; Saturday, Oct. 19; and Sunday, Oct. 20. Each day will feature different family-friendly activities to give its members and local residents an opportunity to enjoy fellowship and to learn about the church’s rich history.
“We are grateful for those who have come before us with the vision of starting a church in this area, and we’re grateful for God’s presence throughout all these years,” said Donna Eshleman, a member of the event’s planning committee. “We pray we can continue with God’s guidance to reach out and to show his love to the community and those whose lives we touch.”
The festivities will begin with a free concert titled “Guitars for Veterans,” at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. On Oct. 19, a video presentation
will be shown in the sanctuary from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to detail Colemanville Church’s history as well as significant historical events from the surrounding area.
Multiple stations and displays will be set up in the church’s social hall, and each station will provide further details on history covered in the presentation. One of the displays will feature a quilt made in 1922, and another will highlight information about the explosion of
a dynamite factory in Shenks Ferry in 1906. Colemanville Church’s cemetery includes a tombstone engraved with the names of the workers killed in the catastrophe. Other displays will highlight the many traditions carried on by church members in the past, such as its softball team and annual suppers organized by a group of women in the congregation. After the historical presentations wrap up, group hymn singing will take

The event is meant to address the high numbers of opiate overdoses both locally and across the country.
Distribution sites in Lancaster County will be Columbia Dream Center, 360 Locust St., Columbia, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m.; Bench Mark Program, 102 S. State St., Ephrata, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
All of the naloxone will be distributed for free. Additionally, attendees of the event may learn more about how to spot an overdose, how to administer naloxone, and different treatment options and recovery supports in the local community.

Those who require naloxone at other times are advised that Pennsylvania has a standing order that allows pharmacies to dispense naloxone to anyone, even without a prescription. Those obtaining the substance may be required to pay a copay.
Naloxone is also available from the Harm Reduction Project, located in the area of King and Water streets from 8 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. For more details, call 717-669-7527.

involved with COBYS, it helped that they were a faith-based organization. When they asked us if we wanted to adopt, we prayed on it and said yes.”
In addition to Louis and Melissa, the Mountville-based Zoeller Bunch includes Coral, 15; Dominic, 14; Sophie, 8; Izabel, 6; Tatum, 6; Oaklee, 5; and Carson, 4. Sophie, Tatum, Izabel, Oaklee and Carson were all under the Zoellers’ foster care first before being officially adopted at various times over the last six years.
Before they were legally adopted, the children were wards of the state, meaning they could’ve been removed from the Zoeller household at any time.
“Foster care exists to give biological families an opportunity to get safe,” said Melissa. “Foster care exists to provide safety for children. Kids need to be safe. If (biological)

parents can’t meet those safety standards, the goal changes from re-unification to adoption. Adoption only happens when kids can’t re-unify safely. The primary goal is always working with the (biological) family. There’s no question that the biological families love them.”
“For us, we truly never knew if we were going to adopt until the decision was kind of made for us,” said Louis. “The courts decide which way the case is going to go. You know that any day (the children) could be out of your home.”
Before they became foster parents, Melissa and Louis received specific training from COBYS Family Services. During and after the foster care and adoption processes, the Zoellers have been afforded support opportunities that include regular visits from COBYS representatives, advice, encouragement, financial assistance and 24-hour
access to a counselor.
“(COBYS) is there to facilitate and support foster families,” said Louis. “If we have questions, we go to them. We had a county caseworker and a COBYS caseworker. (COBYS) was basically our main contact. Overall, COBYS is there for you.”
“For us, (adoption) really wasn’t a question,” said Melissa, “because you get to know the kids. We already knew them; they already knew us. There’s no reason for it not to be forever.”
For additional information about COBYS Family Services, go to www.cobys.org.
According to COBYS Family Services, approximately 15,000 children are currently in the Pennsylvania child welfare system. They are unable to live with their biological families because of abuse, neglect or behavioral issues.
