Event will promote fellowship, community for Christian women
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Three years ago, Jennifer Forren of Quarryville organized Beloved, an event that was designed to offer women in the area a safe place to connect with one another and to strengthen the community. Despite having no sponsors or involvement from any local businesses, Beloved was an immediate success; over 100 women attended the event. This year, Forren will host Crowned, a follow-up event with the same goals of promoting bonds between local women.
“I’ve always had a desire to help women feel loved and accepted,” Forren said. “I never had that; I had to go out and find a support system of women. Now I want to give that support to others.”
Crowned will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, at DOVE Rivers of Life, 900 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg.
Arts & Culture Series seeks to broaden horizons
BY JEFF FALK
What a mundane existence it would be if everything were the same. Not only is variety the spice of life, but also diversity makes the world go round.
In association with Lancaster Bible College, the Trust Performing Arts Center’s ninth Arts & Culture Series is marked by diversity and variety and uniqueness.
The Trust Performing Arts Center recently unveiled its 2023-24 events for the spirited Arts & Culture Series. The 14 performances are a
collection of instrumental music, singing, stage shows and art spread out over a nine-month season that coincides with Lancaster Bible College’s school year.
Ariella Hoover, the interim director of the Trust Performing Arts Center’s Art and Culture Series, said she’s eager to attend the performances.
“Besides the variety, I’m a sucker for the vocal arts,” she said. “That’s why I tend towards the a capella. There’s so much collaboration involved, a lot of technique involved. I think Lancaster is in for a treat when it comes to the vocal arts this year.”
See Arts & Culture pg 2
The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and it will include guest speakers, activities, door prizes and Christian worship. Women age 17 years or older may purchase tickets to Crowned for a set price.
At 8:30 a.m., registration will open for the event and hot cocoa and muffins will be served, provided by the Daily Grind Quarryville. Throughout the day, three guest speakers will share 20-minute presentations, and activities will be offered at a variety of stations. Each activity is design to provoke thought in participants and encourage them to develop a relationship with themselves, their faith and other women. After a short worship session, pizza will be provided for lunch, donated by Dolce Vita in Quarryville.
“We want to get women thinking and really building a relationship with themselves,” Forren said. “It’s
a safe place to make new friends, become closer to Jesus and just have fun with your neighbors.”
Door prizes will be given out during the event, which will include items such as gift baskets, gift cards, hair products, coffee mugs and cookies. Each prize has been donated by a local business. “Businesses began to contact me after the last event and asked how they could support the next one,” said Forren. “It reflects the sense of community in this area, and it’s the reason why I started the event.” The door prizes will be items from businesses such as One Mission Coffee, Beauty Unveiled Salon, Thread to Hearts, Sparrow Heart Cookies, Wicked Panes and Jo’s Baby Cakes, among others. All of the room and table decorations for the event have been donated by White Peacock Rentals.

The Arts & Culture Series launched on Sept. 15 with artwork and a free concert by the recently founded Lancaster Art Song Society at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The series will conclude with a Lancaster International Piano Festival concert presented by the Elaris Duo with Xun Pan on May 4 at the Trust Performing Arts Center.
“I’m excited about the diversity, just the diversity in the types of events we have this season,” said Hoover. “It’s just got a nice flow. Some of the shows are stops on world tours; some are stops on United States tours. It’s on par with a lot of what other performing art centers do. I think audiences should expect to be wowed, especially if they come to an event they don’t usually buy a ticket for.”
Also featured in the series will be the Alejandro Brittes Quartet on Oct. 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tianxu An on Oct. 28; Soul Sanctuary: Religious Spirituals on Oct. 29; performances of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on select dates from
Nov. 25 to Dec. 16; the male chorus Chanticleer on Nov. 29; a masterclass dance festival taught by a local choreographer on Jan. 13; a local choreographer’s dance festival and showcase on Jan. 13 and 14; Piercing Word’s performance of “The Gospel of Mark” on March 1 and 2; a performance by soprano Samantha Hankey on March 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tanya Gabrielian on March 16; and a concert by the British vocal ensemble Apol-
Maize & Snitz Fest planned
The community is invited to explore Lancaster County’s early indigenous and European cultures at the Maize & Snitz Fest on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Visitors will be able to tour the home built in 1719 for the Herr Family and learn about local indigenous life at the Lancaster Longhouse. Also featured will be historical demonstrations, shopping from local vendors and food.
Interpreters and craftspeople will lead demonstrations throughout the day near the Herr House and the Lancaster Longhouse, offering insight into historic cultures, industries and art forms. Attendees will be able to visit the blacksmith shop, learn about gardening and medicinal plants, see a bake oven demonstration, learn about the craft of corn husk cordage and experience an interpretation of indigenous 18th-century life.
At the Herr House kitchen
garden, visitors will be able to learn what the Herr family may have grown on their homestead and what the museum grew this year. A full demonstration schedule is available at www.mennonitelife.org/ events.
Specific activities for children will include corn husk doll making; a scavenger hunt with prizes; scherenschnitte, which is German paper cutting; and fraktur, a Pennsylvania German form of illuminated script.
Fruit from the 1719 Museum’s own orchard will be available for purchase as well as snitz fry pies, sausage sandwiches, apple dumplings, whoopie pies, apple cider and bottled water.
Traditional crafts at the artisan stalls will include fraktur and wood grain painting, important to 18th-century Pennsylvania German communities, and Native American pine needle crafts, finger weaving and drums. A woodworking vendor will
feature bowls and utensils hand-hewn from branches using traditional tools; another vendor will demonstrate the process of yarn dyeing, spinning and weaving.

LancasterHistory to screen films
LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host a film screening event, “I Am Somebody: The Trailblazing Career of Madeline Anderson,” on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. Featuring two documentaries directed by acclaimed film director and Lancaster native Madeline Anderson, the event will aim to shine a spotlight on a groundbreaking filmmaker and two pivotal moments in the struggle for racial equality in America.
Attendees will watch Anderson’s 1960 film “Integration Report 1” and “I Am Somebody,” released in 1970. “Integration Report 1” captures the fight for black equality in multiple American places, including Montgomery, Ala.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Washington, D.C.
“I Am Somebody” focuses on the struggles of black hospital workers in Charleston, S.C. The film documents their efforts to seek equitable labor conditions through striking.
Shianne Hargrove, an information specialist at LancasterHistory, will introduce the films and will also be available to answer questions after the screening about Anderson and the additional research Hargrove has conducted on black artists in Lancaster. Sept. 23 will also be the opening of Hargrove’s new photograph exhibit in LancasterHistory’s Stoudt Gallery, titled “Black Lancastrians in the Arts: A Lasting Legacy.”
Born in 1924 in Lancaster, Anderson had an early passion for directing. She
graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1945, and her cinematic journey began at New York University while studying psychology. She became professionally involved in filmmaking when she answered a babysitting ad for documentarian Richard Leacock, a pioneer of cinema verite style filmmaking, who would go on to become her mentor. Anderson has had a distinguished career, including serving as the first female supervising editor and an in-house producer for the Children’s Television Workshop (“Sesame Street”). She currently resides in Brooklyn. There is a discount for students age 17 and under. Admission is free to LancasterHistory members, but they should register in advance. Tickets can be obtained at www.lancaster history.org or by calling 717-392-4633. Capacity is limited, so advance registration is strongly recommended.

Building connections and giving back
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Great things happen when women on a mission get together. Lancaster County Women for Good formed last year with the goal of raising money for local nonprofits. So far, the group has donated more than $23,000, with 284 women contributing to the effort.
Most recently, the organization presented a check for $7,000 to Arch Street Center at Lancaster County Women for Good’s quarterly Gather & Grant meeting. Located in Lancaster, Arch Street Center provides support and services for adults living with mental illness.
Lancaster County Women for Good began as an outreach of Grapevine, a social giving platform that brings people together for philanthropic work. “Grapevine initiated a bunch of groups in different areas of the country and from that point handed it over to local leadership,” said founding member Anna Horst. She’s joined by the local leadership team of group host Joelle Terranova and
event coordinators Susan Klapkin and Kirstin Knopp.
Each local group sets its own fundraising parameters. For the Lancaster group, women are asked to commit to giving a minimum of $50 per quarter. In the weeks leading up to the group’s Gather & Grant meetingswhich are held in February, May, August and Novembermembers may nominate a nonprofit they’d like to support.
“The nonprofit can have a national or global reach, but it must serve our local community,” Horst explained. “It also must be a 501(c)(3) in good standing.”
From the list of nominees, members vote for their favorites, and representatives from the top three choices are invited to come to a Gather & Grant meeting to give a presentation about their organization and answer any questions. The group then votes on the recipient of that quarter’s donation.
As of now, the organization raises all of its funds through member donations, but Horst said organizers are looking
into sponsorships and fundraisers in the future.
Along with Gather & Grant meetings, which are usually held at Southern Market in downtown Lancaster, the group members also meet once a month for Girl’s Night Out.
“We’ll get together to support a local business, and it’s an extra bonus if the business
is woman-owned,” Horst said. “It’s an opportunity to have fun, socialize, ask questions about our organization and meet other women.”
While most Gather & Grants and Girl’s Night Out events are held on the second Wednesday of the month, October’s Girl’s Night Out will be held on the third

School safety tips offered
As a new school year begins, parents and schools are concerned with ensuring children’s safety and well-being. Whether a child is heading to kindergarten or high school, parents may consider the following tips, provided by the Center for Safe Schools.
Parents should maintain open lines of communication with their child. Encourage the child to share concerns about safety, interactions with peers, or unusual incidents. Awareness of the child’s feelings may help parents address issues promptly and offer guidance.
If a child walks or bikes to school, parents should help him or her plan a safe route that minimizes exposure to busy roads and dangerous intersections. Parents and children may practice the route together until children are comfortable navigating it independently. Children should be reminded to wait in well-lit areas, cross streets at designated crosswalks, and avoid distractions like head-
phones while walking near traffic.
Parents are encouraged to review personal safety guidelines with their children, regardless of the children’s age. Parents may want to avoid using the term “stranger danger,” as statistically, most child abductions are committed by someone known to the victim. Children should be given a list of trusted adults they can contact in an emergency.
Children with access to the internet should be educated about online safety. They should know how to protect their personal information, avoid sharing sensitive data, and recognize potential online threats. Guardians may consider installing parental control software if necessary.
Parents should ensure children know their full name, the parents’ contact information, and emergency contact details. Children should memorize these details in case they need help and can-
not access their phone.
Parents may want to discuss bullying with children and emphasize the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. If a child is bullied or witnesses someone else being bullied, the incident should be reported to a trusted adult.
The beginning of the school year likely includes a review of emergency procedures at the child’s school. Parents can engage in a conversation with their children about emergency preparedness. Discussing scenarios, creating a plan, and emphasizing the importance of staying calm can empower children to respond effectively in unexpected situations.
As children embark on another school year, a combination of communication, education, and preparation can go a long way in creating a secure environment for children to thrive.
For school safety resources, visit www.centerforsafe schools.org.

Students complete Dyslexia Center program
The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 19th annual Celebration of Achievement on July 30 at the Lancaster Masonic Center. Of the nine children graduating from the program, six were in attendance. The graduates are Kaitlin Cruz, Bailie DeMaria, Kayliannah Gonzalez, Iris Kowal, Letteria Olsen, Nalani Reese, Maya Roeser, Delaney Smith, and Seth Wickenheiser.
About 250 children have received services through the center since its opening in 2002.
Heather Brown, director of the center, presented each graduate with a signed certificate, a personalized booklet detailing the student’s reading journey, a collection of thank-you speeches from fellow graduates, and an autograph bear, the mascot adopted by the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc., as a keepsake. Students presented words of thanks to their tutors and the Board of Governors for the services they received. The Lancaster Lodge of Perfection presented a $6,000 check from the fifth annual Bowling Night Fundraiser. The Celebration of Achievement concluded with an ice cream social.
Heather Brown (back, far left), director of the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, recognized program graduates (continuing from left) Seth Wickenheiser, Letteria Olsen, Bailie DeMaria, (front) Iris Kowal, Delaney Smith, Maya Roeser, (not pictured) Kaitlin Cruz, Kayliannah Gonzalez, and Nalani Reese.
The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of six such centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary
through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is
a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. For more information about the program or how to support its mission, call 717481-5680 or email lancaster @cdcinc.org.

A native of Lancaster County, Funk is a 2007 graduate of Ephrata High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Elizabethtown College in 2011 and participated in Semester at Sea through the University of Virginia during the summer of 2010. During the pandemic, she obtained her Paralegal Certificate from Villanova University. Funk also participated in Leadership Lancaster as part of the 2020 Core Class and currently serves as her class’s ambassador. She works remotely as the manager of sales operations and analytics for a unified communications company.
Funk joined the JLL as part of the fall 2015 provi-
sional class. During the course of her eight-year JLL career, her executive leadership activities have included serving as the communications vice president, placement vice president, parliamentarian, and presidentelect. She has also served as a Run4Luck co-chair and a member-at-large for the House Programs and Membership Development committees.
In addition to Funk, fellow 2023-24 board members include Laura McGarry, president-elect; Anna Oot, recording secretary; Melissa Frill Esterly, parliamentarian; Michelle Weaver, treasurer; Erin Sell, community impact vice president; Brittany Fellin, communications vice president; Ashley Noel, fund development vice president; Sandra Schiffli-Salerno, membership development vice president; Meg Lefever Titter, nominating vice president; Erin Derstler, placement vice presi-
dent; and Debbie Havert, sustainer chair.
As of June 2022, JLL’s current initiative is nutrition insecurity, a newly adopted issue-based community impact (IBCI) focus area, to combat the lack of access to healthy and nutrient-rich food and improve nutrition knowledge and dietary habits across all populations in Lancaster County. Members collected 1,500 manual can openers for the Lancaster Power Packs Project, and they planted and continue to tend a community garden at the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster’s Jack Walker Clubhouse in downtown Lancaster.
The JLL will celebrate its 100th anniversary in November of this year and will mark the achievement with several commemorative events throughout the year. The centennial jubilee will conclude on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Fulton Theatre, where active and sustaining
members and community partners will celebrate and pay tribute to the JLL’s impact and look forward to the coming years of service to the Lancaster community.
Operating on a fiscal year, the 2023-24 League year began on July 1 and will conclude on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Ceramic artist to display work, teach classes
Local artist Marina Paul will exhibit her handmade ceramics made from polymer clay at Mulberry Art Studios on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. The artist spotlight event is free and open to the public.
During the program, Paul will talk about her craft and her life as an artist, growing up in the Soviet Union, the tearing down of the Iron Curtain and emigrating to America. Refreshments will be served, and artwork will be for sale.
Paul will also teach three Polymer Clay Introductory Workshops on Mondays, Oct. 16, 23 and 30, at 1:30 p.m. The workshop will be held in the North Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios.
To register for the classes, contact gallery curator Stephanie Clayton-Kulfan at Stephanie.mulberryart@gmail .com. A fee will be charged for each of the three workshops, and there will be a one-time materials fee per student.
Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster.
Country-style worship event set
Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster, will present a country gospel music and worship event in its sanctuary on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 6:30 p.m. This gathering will be part of the church’s series of worship services that feature a relaxed atmosphere, music, and singing, all done country style.
The upcoming event will be led by the group 3:16, an acoustic Christian band that features both modern and traditional songs. The name 3:16 was chosen for the band members’ love of John 3:16. The band members are Jim Conners, guitar and vocals; Laquell Cooper, percussion; Travis Messner, vocals; and Joseph Liptock, keyboard and vocals, plus several guest musicians and vocalists.
There is no admission charge. Donations will be accepted.
For further information, call or text pastor Harry Kaufhold at 717-615-0525.
