Blurring the line between past and present he Historic Rock Ford and Theater, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will host a production of “Emma, The Matchmaker” on select dates from Thursday, Nov. 2, to Saturday, Nov. 18. Sam Slaymaker, director of Historic Rock Ford, adapted the play from Jane Austen’s novel “Emma.” This year, the production will be directed by Rachel Faust, who will also play the lead role of its protagonist, Emma Woodhouse. Each performance will be roughly one hour and will take place in the General Edward Hand Mansion on Rock Ford’s property. Audience members will follow the actors through the candlelit parlors and hallways of the house, which was constructed in the late 18th century. Due to the limited space inside the mansion, a restricted supply of tickets are available for the immersive show. Slaymaker’s “Emma, The Matchmaker,” set in England circa 1800, focuses on the first of three volumes that make up

Although Faust has a wealth of experience to draw from, her two-fold part in the production presents unique challenges. “One thing I was struggling with is not being able to stand outside of the scenes and see the audience’s perspective,” Faust said. “But my cast has been amazing. If they’re not involved in a scene, they’ll step out and watch to give me feedback before I even ask.” While preparing this year’s iteration of “Emma,” Faust said she has tried to give the show a fresh quality by making her character more

LancasterHistory highlights locally born filmmaker BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

The National Museum of African American History and Culture recognizes Madeline Anderson as the first African American woman to direct a televised documentary film. Anderson and her work are credited with paving the way for black women in the television industry, but many Lancaster residents may be unaware that she also grew up in Lancaster city. The renowned

filmmaker is an alumna of McCaskey High School and Millersville University, and she went on to achieve national acclaim in her career. On Sept. 23, LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, held a film screening of two documentaries directed by Anderson. The first film, titled “Integration Report One,” was released in 1960, and it depicts the battle for racial equality in various cities across the See Filmmaker pg 2

grounded and by not relying on what has been done in previous years. Additionally, the setting of the Hand Mansion has allowed Faust and Slaymaker to blur the line between presentational theater and realistic theater. Instead of recreating a window to the past with a set made from flats and plywood, the cast of “Emma” will perform in a home that was built centuries ago and lived in by real individuals of that time period. “It’s an otherworldly experience,” Faust said. “You’re in a space where so many things have happened in those rooms. I try to give the setting as much time in the spotlight as the actors.” Faust also noted that despite the source material being more than 200 years old, she finds its themes and characters to be highly relatable for a modern audience. “(The characters) are very real people,” Faust added. “I’m trying to help the audience relate to each person by bringing out those qualities within them that transcend time.” For more information, visit www.historicrockford.org.

Dance your cap off at the annual Railroad Museum swing dance BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Last year’s swing dance drew more than 200 attendees, many of whom were decked out in period-accurate attire.

Nearly a century later, the trends and styles of those who lived in the early to mid-1900s remain instantly recognizable and deeply appreciated by many throughout the United States. Americans who were born in the first three decades of the 20th century are commonly referred to as the Greatest Generation, and with ample reason: This generation includes the individuals who weathered calamities like the Great Depression and fought in See Swing dance pg 3

United States. The second film, titled “I Am Somebody,” was released in 1970 to capture the troubles of black women who fought for better working conditions at a hospital in Charleston, S.C. Shianne Hargrove, an information specialist at LancasterHistory, had the idea to feature Anderson’s work while she was working on a project for the organization’s Collections Up Close program in February. Collections Up Close is a series that offers tours to focus on specific items from LancasterHistory’s archive; during the tours, staff members and visiting scholars provide additional information on the historical relevance of each item. The goal of Hargrove’s project was to highlight black individuals from Lancaster who became accomplished artists, directors or actors. Hargrove was already familiar with Anderson’s work, but she rediscovered it in her research and embarked on a quest to find copies of Anderson’s

documentaries. After six months of hard work and research, Hargrove located copies of the films with the help of Mabel Rosenheck, LancasterHistory’s director of education and exhibition planning. “I was a fan of (Anderson’s) work already - I had seen her documentaries in college - but realizing that she was a local black female filmmaker made me feel closer to her,” Hargrove said. “I also graduated from McCaskey and Millersville. It became more real to me since she existed here in Lancaster, and she made these amazing documentaries that will be housed in the Smithsonian Institution.” Anderson now resides in Brooklyn, but she virtually attended the film screening for a question-and-answer session where she explained her motivation to become a filmmaker. “When I started going to the movies when I was 7 years old, I saw the stereotype of Hollywood’s notion of black people. We

were always stupid. We were always shuffling along,” Anderson told the audience. “It was my childish idea that I would become a filmmaker and show black people as they really were to mitigate the terrible image of us that Hollywood had on the screen.” Hargrove hopes to digitize some of Anderson’s work for

LancasterHistory’s collections in addition to materials that document her early life in Lancaster. Beginning on Friday, Nov. 17, Anderson will be featured among other artists in the exhibit “Black Lancastrians in the Arts: A Lasting Legacy” at LancasterHistory. In previous years, attendees of both Trains and Troops and the annual swing dance have arrived in period-accurate attire such as vintage military uniforms. “The weekend is a nice way to celebrate a different aspect of the 1940s, as well as explore the tie between railroads and the military,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the Railroad Museum. “The hall is always nice and full, and the music really makes the building come alive.” The swing dance has continued to grow in popularity since the tradition was started 20 years ago. Last year, the event drew more than 200 participants, the highest number of dancers to attend the swing dance to date. The museum will also host its annual Trains and Treats event on Saturday, Oct. 21. Children ages 3 to 12 will receive a treat bag with admission and may visit stations placed in museum exhibits to receive candy. For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.

the Second World War. America as we know it was largely shaped by the Greatest Generation. Many people pay tribute to its members by recreating the music, dancing and fashion of their time, including the participants of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s annual swing dance. The museum, which is located on 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host the event on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase in the museum gift shop and online at https://tinyurl .com/rrmswingdance. The swing dance will take place in the Rolling Stock Hall of the museum, and it will include live entertainment from Moonlighters Big Band. The Lititz-based musical group performs songs of popular big band artists such as Glenn Miller and Les Brown. Moonlighters Big Band will play music for attendees to boogie to for the duration of the evening, save for a few breaks. During each break, members of the Victrola Dance Hall will demonstrate moves that firsttime swing dancers can try out when the music starts back up. Light refreshments will be available during the event. On the same weekend as the swing dance, the museum will host its Trains and Troops program during its normal operating hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 4 and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5. Several exhibitors will set up displays to discuss American military conflicts that were heavily impacted by railroads, from the American Civil War to the early days of the Gulf War. Many exhibitors will bring military vehicles to display at the museum, and the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will present a ceremony to salute veterans at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The loss of a baby affects a family for a lifetime, and care and support are needed well beyond the immediate time of loss. People who provide that care, whether in a professional or personal capacity, can benefit from attending “A Journey of a Lifetime,” an inperson perinatal conference sponsored by Share of Lancaster. The conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. It will present information for people in the medical field as well as therapists and others who have touched the lives of families that have lost a baby. “It’s been a while since Share had an in-person conference like this one,” said Dr. Serena Wu, who is a maternal fetal medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the executive director of Share. “To have a conference that is pulling in nationally recognized

speakers on this subject matter is unique.” Highlights of the “Journey of a Lifetime” conference will include morning keynote speaker Dr. Robert Silver of University of Utah, who has spent more than 20 years researching stillbirth and pregnancy loss. Afternoon sessions and speakers will feature a keynote address by Joanna Cole of CHOP, who has developed perinatal palliative and bereavement care programs. “The first half of the day will focus on the medical realm, and the second half will concentrate of the psychosocial realm,” Wu explained. A variety of panels will be featured, led by experts in the field. The conference is open to anyone who provides care or is affected by pregnancy loss, she noted, adding that it also provides continuing education credit for healthcare workers. “Part of Share of Lancaster’s mission is education and to bring awareness,” Wu said.

“October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, so it’s timed with that. The theme is ‘Past, Present and Future’: Where have we been? Where are we now, and where are we going?” Founded more than 40 years ago by a bereaved mother in Lancaster and two nurses, Share of Lancaster helps parents and families deal with the death of an infant from miscarriage, pregnancy complications, stillbirth, SIDS or other causes. “We want people to know they aren’t alone,” said Wu. “A lot of times, people will say, ‘Until I started talking about it, I didn’t realize other people had experienced this as well.’” Share will host the Share of Lancaster Walk 2023 the day after the conference, Sunday,

Bruce Hoover received a 2023 Christian Teacher of the Year Award from the Herzog Foundation at the organization’s annual gala on Sept. 30 in Washington, D.C. The Christian Teacher of the Year awards are part of the Herzog Foundation’s Excellence in Christian Education award series. Hoover was one of 12 instructors nationwide to receive the award this year. Hoover teaches American history at Anchor Christian Academy, a secondary University-Model school located on the east side of Lancaster. Known for his dynamic teaching style, Hoover offers his students numerous immersive experiences throughout the school year, including a fall trip to sites related to the French and Indian War and an outdoor demonstration of early American farming implements. In class, Hoover frequently portrays historical figures, and the relics that fill his classroom shelves rotate throughout the year depending on the time periods he is teaching about. The eighthgrade class culminates with a spring trip to Gettysburg. Dressed in Civil War era

This hands-on experience gives students a sense of connection to history and illustrates the importance of community as they camp and hike together for three days. Retired pilot establishes scholarship for aviation students that he learned that Aero-Tech was partnered with EMU for its flight program. When Rummel learned that EMU did not have a scholarship program for its young aviators, he started one. The scholarship is available to students entering their junior year and working toward a commercial pilot certificate. Recently, the scholarship committee named Griffin Snyder as the first recipient of the Robert J. Rummel scholarship. Snyder, from New Holland, will receive $5,000. He has already obtained his private, instrument, and commercial ratings and will use the scholarship to pursue his multi-engine rating and flight instructor certificates. The scholarship award ceremony will take place during EMU’s Aviation Open House on Thursday, Nov. 2, which is open to the public. The event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Aero-Tech Services’ facility at Lancaster Airport on Airport Road in Lititz. To learn more and register, visit www.emu.edu/aviation. EMU’s collegiate aviation program operates under Part 141 regulations and offers reduced airline transport pilot (ATP) certification requirements. Graduates of the program are eligible for 1,000 hours toward their ATP license instead of the standard 1,500 hours. Through EMU’s program, students earn their private, instrument, commercial with multi-engine rating, and flight instructor certificates. Additionally, they can participate in regional airline cadet and pilot preparation

Robert J. Rummel, a recently retired professional pilot, has collaborated with the Lancaster campus of Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) to establish an aviation scholarship for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in leadership and organizational management (LOM) with an aviation concentration. The scholarship’s purpose is to help aviation students achieve their goals. Rummel’s extensive experience in the aviation industry will provide an opportunity for EMU’s aviation students to receive mentorship and support from someone dedicated to giving back to his profession. Rummel was a corporate pilot before his retirement. He began his flight training at Lancaster Aviation Flight Academy when he was 20 years old in 1970, and by 1972, he had obtained his private, commercial, and flight instructor licenses. Rummel served as a full-time instructor at the academy for three years. In 1975, he began his 44-year corporate flying career, which included piloting turboprops, helicopters, and large corporate jets. For the last 23 years of his career, Rummel flew a Bombardier Global Express for Paramount Pictures and the CBS Corporation, traveling to locations worldwide. Rummel retired in 2019, but he still had a passion for aviation and flying. One day he attempted to rent a plane from Aero-Tech Services Inc., but he discovered that all of the company’s aircraft were booked weeks in advance. It was then
