Strasburg-Heisler Library Posts Maker’s

Players

Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., will host a maker’s market on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be free to attend and will include multiple vendors, art demonstrations, a silent auction and food and beverages available for purchase. Regular library services will not be available during the maker’s market.

The

This year’s event will be the second maker’s market held at the library, and local artists and artisans of all kinds have been invited to participate. Twenty-two vendors in total will be present, and no two vendors will offer the same items.

“The whole intent of the maker’s market is to showcase the library in a nontraditional way,” said Kristin Fernitz, director of the StrasburgHeisler Library. “The library is a place for people to gather and share ideas and talents. There will be an opportunity to talk with the artists during their demonstrations to learn more about their craft and techniques.”

The maker’s market has been expanded this year, and among the items sold by the vendors will be holiday items, handmade wooden crafts, birdhouses, homemade jams and sauces, leather items, framed art and jewelry. The library’s board of directors will operate a tent outside to sell lunch and snacks, and the Joe on the Go Coffee Co. food truck will sell coffee, tea and various baked goods.

A silent auction will begin at the library on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at noon and run until Wednesday, Nov. 3. Several items have been donated from local businesses for the auction, including a swing set from King Swings, a Strasburg scooter tour for two and gift cards from restaurants. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the Strasburg-Heisler Library, which

will use the funds for operational costs that allow the library to stay open, such as the recent replacement of the building’s heating system.

“We want people to see the library in a different way; it’s a place to go for information and idea sharing,” said Fernitz. “The maker’s

market also provides a space for local artists who may not be participating in shows otherwise.” Fernitz will sell her own handmade tote bags at the market.

The Strasburg-Heisler Library offers several things to the community beyond books, such as early childhood programs. Wendy Jones,

the program coordinator, runs four different programs for children per week. The programs offer families an opportunity to enroll their children who may be too young or unable to attend preschool programs otherwise.

Group Posts Fall Play

The Promise Players theater group will present “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” for its fall play at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 4 through 6, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 10 through 13. The Thursday and Friday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. showing and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. showing.

The play follows the story of a small town 25 years after a bus accident killed the members of the local wrestling team and rattled the community. The majority of the show takes place in the Red Rocket Diner, named after the town’s sports team, where the audience gets to know the diner’s regulars: the waitresses competing to see who can convince a customer

to order the strangest meal, the sheriff who stops in for his daily coffee and the discontented cook, Johnny, who dreams of escaping to the big city. When another tragedy strikes, the town’s residents and the regulars at the diner navigate the loss, and Johnny wrestles with his faith as he ruminates on life and death during his daily task of serving up breakfast.

The Promise Players’ board of directors met in 2019 to research potential shows but had to put its schedule on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Promise Players’ first show since the pandemic was “Smoke on the Mountain,” which was held over the summer at Rawlinsville Camp Meeting.

“‘Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon’ is about how faith helps us through difficult circumstances,” said Lanny Millette, the play’s director. “(The Promise Players) felt like there was a good faith message in it, and it still has a light-hearted nature. It’s a message people need to hear.” The organization’s goal is to stage performances that speak to life issues and illustrate what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. Actors are cast from across the county, and those who are not placed in acting roles often assist behind the scenes with things such as lighting, stage production and operating the box office.

For each play, the Promise Players has sponsored a different nonprofit and donated any profits made; in the last 27 years, it has donated over $250,000 between several organizations. “We want to make a difference in the community,” said Millette. “Not only is it a great night of entertainment, but you sup-

port a good cause.” “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” will benefit The Factory Ministries’ youth ministry in Paradise.

Tickets for the show may be purchased via donation online or at the door. There is a suggested monetary donation for adults, and attendees may also donate a can of nonperishable food for admission, which will be given to the community food bank in East Lampeter.

Organ Concert To Feature Works By Franck

The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will host nationally renowned, award-winning organist Mark Laubach for a recital presenting the music of César Franck. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman

Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster.

Admission is free.

Franck, a French organist, composer, and pedagogue, was one of the most influential organ composers of all time, paving the way for other French composers. This December will mark the

200th anniversary of Franck’s birth.

At the concert, Laubach will perform some of Franck’s most difficult organ works on St. Anthony Church’s organ, which has a full-bodied sound that mimics that experienced by Franck. Laubach serves as

organist and choirmaster at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre as well as professor of organ at Marywood College in suburban Scranton.

Booters Top Octorara, Fall Short Against Ephrata

With a chance to qualify for the L-L League playoffs, the Pioneers traveled to Ephrata Tuesday, Oct. 11 but fell short in sweeping the series. With all the scoring coming in the first half, the Mounts, who lost to L-S 2-0 in their first meeting, pulled out a 3-1 victory.

“That was a big game,” said head coach Chris Garraffa. “We needed a win to get in. It’s always tough to play at Ephrata. They’re a very good side.”

Dan Marcroft, assisted by Landon Rice, opened the scoring in the 14th minute. The Mounts, who led 7-1 in corners, knotted the score eight minutes later and then scored twice in a two-minute span to take the lead.

In non-league action Friday, Oct. 7, L-S battled Octorara, and needed a strong second half to pull out a 3-0 road win.

Jack Frego opened the scoring with a goal in the 58th minute. Van Dietrich assisted. Rice found Marcroft once again for a goal nine minutes later while Jack Kelly, on a pass from Connor Kouterick, made it 3-0.

FIELD HOCKEY

With the post-season here, every game is a big game. The field hockey team not only battled for a chance at the league playoffs but fought to stay in the hunt for districts as well. The Pioneers worked a 2-2 tie against Manheim Cen-

tral on Oct. 6, added a crucial 1-0 win over Ephrata Monday, Oct. 10 and then earned a must-win over Donegal, 2-1 Wednesday.

The final score against Ephrata does not come close to explaining the tempo of the game. “We were in their circle almost the entire first half,” said head coach Katrina Swarr.

Maggie Swarr, on a cross from Lyndi Wall, gave L-S the cushion they needed.

“Maggie had an awesome game,” lauded Swarr. “A goal, two defensive saves, awesome aerials, and several critical defensive plays. And Brooke Zuber was outstanding in goal. She stopped first, second and third shots,” she continued. “Marissa Rise handled the ball all over the field, Lyndi and Tori Heiserman had several breakaways and Breigh Bauer also came up with some big plays in the backfield.”

The excitement was just as obvious in Lampeter’s 2-2 tie against the Barons. “Nobody expected us to stay with them,” said Swarr. “We clearly dominated and are clicking as a team right now, which is the perfect time for that to happen.”

A first quarter goal by Rice gave L-S an early advantage.

The Barons, however, converted a penalty stroke with 1:43 left in the second to knot the score. L-S regained the lead in the third on Kara Scranton’s goal, giving L-S momentum. But the hockey

Gods were looking over the Barons that day as they scored on a corner with no time on the clock.

Wednesday LS hosted Donegal for senior night in their last league game. A win, coupled with an E-town loss to Ephrata, would put LS in the league playoffs. The Pioneers took care of business, winning 2-1 but the Mounts tied E-town forcing a second place tie with LS. The Bears advanced on the third tiebreaker, a higher district power ranking (9th vs 14th).

Senior Valeria Franco scored her first goal of the season before Donegal knotted the score minutes later in the first quarter. Heiserman’s second quarter tally proved to be the game-winner, leaving LS at 6-3-1, 9-7-1 overall.

CROSS COUNTRY

In their last dual meet in New Holland, the boys’ cross country team swept Donegal and Garden Spot Tuesday, Oct. 11 to wrap up the section title. Seniors Ben Devine and Parker Stoner tied for first place (17:29) and capped another

undefeated regular season (7-0). Colin Whitaker and Luke Smith followed in third and fourth place respectively and Owen Witmer (13th) rounded out the top five.

“This is our fifth year of section titles,” said head coach Mari Cunningham. “Five years ago, we tied with Central as section champs. We each had one loss that season. None of the boys on the team currently have had a regular season loss.”

The girls’ team picked up a solid win over the Spartans but gave up the first four places to Donegal in a 19-36 loss. They finish at 4-3 on the year.

Keira Smecker, Merin Kauffman and Morgan Wright finished 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively with Abigail Welchans (9th) and Jocelyn Wolff (11th) rounding out the top five. Mikayla Coe settled for 15th.

FOOTBALL

The Pioneer football team scored five straight touchdowns in a 30-7 victory over Berks Catholic Friday, Oct. 7, keeping pace with Wyomissing (7-0 overall) who also sits at 4-0 in Section Four.

“Our defense has been playing very well,” said head coach Victor Ridenour. “Garry Morrison, our DC, has done an amazing job preparing our kids. The kids do their job,

trust their teammates and it shows. We have been able to limit big plays,” he added.

“Our defensive unit, Luke Hines and Ezechiel Lukusa (defensive ends), linebackers Jackson Heeter, Julian Lopez, Harry Jay Wolgemuth, and Drexton Frank along with defensive backs Jack Groff, Hunter Hildenbrand, Ian Bender and Damoj Gray and Landon Coronado (nose) has been very good lately.”

Carson Coleman (97 yards on 22 attempts) opened the scoring with a 3-yard run in the first quarter and capped Lampeter’s scoring with a 5yarder in the third. Trent Wagner, who completed five of 11 attempts (3 to Hildenbrand) for 99 yards, added a 1-yard keeper midway through the second quarter.

Peter Fiorello’s first field goal of the year with a 37-yard boot with one second left in the first half, leaving L-S in front 16-0.

Hildenbrand (79 rushing yards), hauled in a 45-yard TD pass from Wagner early in the third frame, setting up Coleman’s final tally.

VOLLEYBALL

With the end of the season approaching, the volleyball team is keeping a close watch on the district rankings. They currently sit 8th in a field of

16 with three games left in the regular season.

In their only match over the last week, the girls dug out a 3-0 win over visiting Cocalico Tuesday, Oct. 11.

After a 25-19 first set win, the Pioneers were challenged in the second set and pulled out a 27-25 ‘overtime’ if you will, victory. That sparked a commanding 25-10 final set win.

Emily Mullin was at the top of her game, dishing out 21 assists, serving up three aces and hustling for four digs on the night. Grace Schonour and Chloe Nolt provided a strong presence at the net with three blocks each while Jenna Hoover was on the receiving end of Mullin’s sets, putting down a match-high nine kills.

GOLF

At the District Three Golf Championships at Briarwood Golf Club, Oct. 7-8, Lampeter’s Ben Wilson carded a 77-76 and finished tied for 15th place with a 153 two-day total, making the cut for states.

“Ben was six over after the first two holes on the second day but came back to finish one under over the next 16 to qualify for states,” said head coach Mike Chiodo. “He’s the first kid in L-S history to get to states twice.”

Morgan Smith, also a senior, missed the cut by just four strokes while senior Jason Long, in his district debut fired his average, 80, on the first day but missed the cut for day two by one stroke.

Sophomore Drew Smith was the final Pioneer to compete. He carded an 88 and gained valuable experience.

TENNIS

Also in the post-season, the tennis team competed in the L-L League Flight tournament over the last week but were dealt early exits.

Kylie Gerhardt, seeded fourth, picked up a 6-0, 6-1 round one win over Juliet Lamichane (LC) but fell in the second round with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss to Maggie Auman (LCD).

“Unfortunately, Kylie had to withdraw after continuous arm pain,” said head coach Mark Trach. “That means no possibility of No. 1 singles or doubles advancing to districts.”

Rowan Kimmel, at No. 2, also went 1-1 defeating Solanco’s Adrienne Dolan in straight sets before bowing out against CV’s Paula

Valverde Gomez.

Fourth seed Katie Finn (No. 4) defeated Hannah Bruce (Co) and Madeline Kase (CC) before dropping a 6-1, 6-3 semifinals set against Central’s Sydney Peters.

In doubles play, Kimmel and Miller advanced with an 8-6 nod over Elco’s Wolfling and Shaak but lost 8-2 against Central’s Miller and Peters. Young and Hess followed the same path, earning an 8-5 first round win before dropping an 8-6 match against LCD’s Edwards and Philip.

held on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will include a gallery talk from exhibition co-curator Tom Stanley. The Eckert Art Gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays and from noon to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

“True Likeness” is a traveling exhibition that originated at Davidson College in North Carolina, and it was curated by Lia Newman and Stanley during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During a time when everyone concealed their faces with masks, the curators asked the question, “What is a likeness?” The collection includes artwork that offers a wide range of answers to the question through mediums such as video, photography, painting, collage, installation, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. The show explores the concept of a likeness and seeks to demonstrate that it can be more than something or someone’s face value.

Three-Dimensional Theater

“This (play) is intended to be enjoyed by all ages,” said Dean Sauder, director of “The House at Pooh Corner,” the Lancaster Mennonite High School fall play.

Sauder mentioned that the show also celebrates the unification of Lancaster Mennonite School’s elementary, middle, and high schools all on one campus. “Since we have elementary kids on campus, we will do a children’s theater for our fall show,” said Sauder.

“The House at Pooh Corner,” based on the stories by A.A. Milne, will be staged in the High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East,

Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 27, 28, and 29, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m.

The story of “The House at Pooh Corner” is told through the eyes of 6-year-old Christopher Robin, played by Julia Fisher. On a beautiful morning in the Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh, played by Tessa Kennedy; Piglet, played by Kay Beidler; Eeyore, played by Eli Heinsey; Rabbit, played by Jaz Shanahan; and their friends are called to a meeting by Christopher Robin, who tells them that he will be going away to something called “education.” Grappling with the

unknown, they all decide to run away to the South Pole; however, before they can leave, they encounter a bouncy creature, played by Sim Spurrier, who destroys the home of Owl, played by Noah Niehans.

As the 12 cast members rehearse the play, the students are working to create three-dimensional characters from the flat ones readers know from books and on the screen. “The one caution I gave them is to develop the character in their own way,” said Sauder.

Facing that challenge, the students are working to portray complexity in the characters while retaining the delight of their simplicity.

Laura Rosario, who plays Kanga, pointed out that the story sometimes presents complex topics through the eyes of a child. “(It’s a challenge) trying to add depth (while) remembering that it’s a kids’ show and Christopher Robin himself is a child,” she noted.

Beidler added that the characters are “very distinct.” “It’s like you’re playing a personality (trait) rather than a character,” said Spurrier, who pointed out that Eeyore represents sadness, Pooh is kindness, and Tigger is energy. “It’s (fun) finding where your character falls on that spectrum,” he said.

Spurrier noted that the characters are iconic and familiar. Fisher agreed, pointing out that all the characters are manifestations of Christopher Robin’s imagination. “It’s difficult to find Christopher Robin’s personality because he doesn’t have a distinct emotion like other characters,” she said. Beidler added that because Christopher Robin created the characters, they are magnified extensions of himself.

Tickets, which are necessary to attend, are available on a “pay what you can” basis at www.lancastermennonite.org/ events/lmh-fall-play-2022-the -house-of-pooh-corner.

Anti-littering Initiatives Posted

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced its new anti-littering campaign, developed as part of the Wolf administration’s Litter Action Plan and in response to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s 2019 Pennsylvania Litter Research Study. The campaign, “PA

Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters,” encourages community members to clean up litter, whether by picking up litter in their neighborhood or organizing a larger cleanup of a public space.

Additionally, to prevent litter from ending up in waterways, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful invites residents of the commonwealth to participate in Pick Up Pennsylvania in support of the Ocean Con-

servancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The annual event is an opportunity to improve neighborhoods and Pennsylvania’s waterways by coordinating or participating in a litter cleanup.

In addition to waterway cleanups, land-based cleanups are also eligible since a significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land. Wind and rain carry litter into storm drains or directly into creeks and rivers that eventually flow to the ocean where it has a negative effect on marine life, human health, and coastal economies.

Through Wednesday, Nov. 30, participants who have registered for Pick Up Pennsylvania can receive free trash

bags, gloves, and safety vests provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and the Ocean Conservancy, while supplies last. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful suggests following all applicable federal, state, and local health and safety rules for COVID-19 in effect at the time of the event.

To register a cleanup or community improvement event, visit www.keeppa beautiful.org/programs/pick -up-pa/. For more information, contact Michelle Dunn at 877-772-3673, ext. 113, or mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org.

To become a supporter of the 2023 Pick Up Pennsylvania program, contact Deb Woolley at dwoolley@keeppabeautiful.org.

“One of the reasons this exhibition stood out to me is the diversity of artistic styles as well as the range of points of view shown by the artists,” said Heidi Leitzke, associate professor of art at Millersville University and director of the Eckert Art Gallery. “One thing I love about running the gallery is being able to bring art of national reputation to our campus so that students don’t have to travel to New York, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C., to see exceptional work.” Leitzke is the first full-time director of the Eck-

Winter Sports Kickoff

Saying Farewell To Mr. Suit

Mr. Suit Records, 118 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, announced via Instagram on Oct. 3 that it will permanently close its doors at the end of the year. The news was met by a chorus of cries from the community, with responses by everyone from now-internationally famous rockers to those who became acquainted with the store while studying in Lancaster.

The record store has operated in Lancaster for 15 years and was started by Mike Madrigale, who has run it ever since. Madrigale grew up near Allentown, where he attended Kutztown University and combed through local hole-inthe-wall shops to find additions for his record collection. He moved to Lancaster, where his brother and sister-in-law lived, in 2000.

“I was always working in record stores. When I moved to Lancaster, I ended up being in food service for a while, which was fun, but I always wanted to open my own place,” said Madrigale. He found out through his brother, who owned an art gallery downtown, that a building had opened up. With his own collection, Madrigale seized the opportunity to open a store, and Mr. Suit was born.

“There was definitely a learning curve with finding what I wanted to carry and getting enough of it at one time, but within a few years I

hit my stride,” said Madrigale. Mr. Suit wasn’t the only game in town; Stan’s Records on Prince Street offered a collection of classic records, and Angry, Young & Poor on Orange Street has been a punk’s one-stop shop for vinyl and clothing since 1995. But Mr. Suit sold records you might not find at either, having music from more contemporary artists across dozens of genres.

Over the years, Madrigale connected with the Lancaster community both through Mr. Suit and his own musical endeavors. He performed and toured as a member of the post-hardcore outfit Sadaharu, which released several albums on CI Records, and later with garage-punk threepiece High Heels. Although Madrigale met several artists through CI Records and from performing at the Chameleon Club (Michael Kuhn of NAH

and 1994! and JB Brubaker of August Burns Red were among the first to react to the news of Mr. Suit’s closure), he also made an impact on hundreds of people who were either visiting Lancaster for the first time or lived locally and needed a certain record.

“I’m thrilled to have had any impact on anyone,” said Madrigale. “I live a couple blocks away and have been here for years. (Mr. Suit) is something for everybody and for the community.” From the parents who needed records for their kids’ ‘50s-themed prom to teenagers in the suburbs who trekked into town to find a new record on the weekends, Madrigale and his shop made an impact on many people’s lives.

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, a 15-year anniversary event for Mr. Suit will be held at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. The event will feature live music and celebrate the legacy of Madrigale’s shop, which will continue to sell records during its regular hours until Saturday, Dec. 31. More details on the event will be announced on Mr. Suit’s Instagram, @mrsuitrecords, closer to its date.

So, stop in and grab one last record from Mr. Suit, and in Madrigale’s own words, “Let’s make the rest of the year less of a funeral and more of a party, OK?”

Memorial Closes For Renovations

The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.

The memorial is made of concrete,

granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.

Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading drainage.

Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Tax-deductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person.

Smith Inducted Into Athletic Hall Of Fame

The Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously inducted Ryan Smith into the Hall of Fame for 2022 at halftime during the L-S football game against Cocalico on Sept. 23.

During his basketball career at L-S, Ryan scored over 1,000 points and tallied over 560 rebounds and 84 blocked shots. He ended his career with a 40% 3-point shooting percentage and a 62% 2-point percentage. He had his career best game in the league playoffs in 2018 with 39 points and 21 rebounds. He was named a section all-star two times and in his senior year was the Section 2 Player of the Year. He was also a second-team all-state player. The team won multiple tournaments and two section championships; qualified for the

league, district, and state tournaments; and won the first league championship in school history.

After graduation, he attended East Stroudsburg University (ESU). Ryan averaged 16.9 points and 8.0 rebounds while helping lead the Warriors to the PSAC semifinals and the NCAA Division II Tournament. He had one of the top freshman seasons in program history, ranking second at ESU in points (473), points per game, rebounds (225), rebounds per game, field goals (177), and free throws (107) among the Warriors freshmen. He scored 20 points in 10 games, had 10 double-doubles, scored a career-high 31 points against Kutztown, and had 30 points and 13 rebounds in a 106-99 overtime loss against West Liberty in the NCAA Division

II Tournament first round in what was his final collegiate game.

He was the 2018-19 PSAC East Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Year and a second team All-PSAC East selection in his only season of collegiate competition. He was an honorary member of the 2019-20 All-PSAC East team.

Ryan was a two-sport athlete at L-S, also playing golf.

Coach Chiodo said, “Ryan’s positive attitude was contagious. He helped carry on the

competitive nature of the L-S golf team, which has carried forward in the years after his graduation.”

Ryan played golf four years. During his sophomore year, the team qualified for the league tournament, and he averaged a score of 92. In his junior year, Ryan was named a Section 2 all-star, and the team was section champion and qualified for the league championship tournament. He averaged 86 and played in the first or second position.

As a senior, he averaged an 89, played in the second or third position, and was a Lancaster-Lebanon League Honorable Mention All-Star.

Ryan got his start in basketball in the L-S Youth Basketball Program, and the current members of the program formed the line for the Smiths to walk through during the halftime presentation.

Accepting the award were Ryan’s mother, Kim; his father, Craig, and his brother, Darren.

One hundred percent of donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping, lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.

mentors students of color with the ultimate goal to create a more diverse teaching workforce. Her local involvement also focuses on creating a socially just community. She is co-founder of the Social Justice Collective at Millersville and is a DEI trainer. Additionally, she serves as president for the Celebration of Life, a fundraising organization supporting local cancer patients and their families. She is also a longtime partner of the School District of Lancaster’s Project Teacher Development, which focuses on diverse student and staff initiatives.

Johnson founded the Lancaster branch of Girls on the Run in 2009 and was instrumental in growing this local organization throughout Lancaster and Lebanon counties, impacting the lives of nearly 20,000 girls in grades three through 12. Girls on the Run is a nonprofit, 10-week program aimed at inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. Core values taught include confidence, care, connections, competence, and contribution to impact the community and develop compassion. The overall goal is empowering girls to have the self-confidence to achieve their highest potential and ultimately make a difference.

Recently, Johnson founded Carrie Johnson and Associates and Drop Below the Surface Retreats. In her new endeavor, she is working to empower women with strength-based coaching and leadership development to build self-assurance in the workplace as well as in personal life. Johnson was unable to attend the luncheon but was represented by Maine Keith, a Girls on the Run board member who spoke about the mission of the organization.
