Promise Players slate fall play BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
he Promise Players theater group will offer a performance of “The One You Need” for its fall production at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 3 through 5, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 9 through 12. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. show to close the weekend. “The One You Need” is a play written by Janette Frankford-Book, who has been a member of the Promise Players for more than 13 years. The production tells the story of Jan, a young woman who is taking care of her father after he is diagnosed with a terminal illness. As the father approaches the end of his life, his primary concern is making sure his daughter has a relationship with God. Jan opposes the faith and only wishes to have her father in her life. The play explores the subject of grief as it follows the intense dynamic between the two main characters, but it also finds room for comedic scenarios as Jan struggles to be a graceful caregiver. Frankford-Book began writing “The One You Need” more than 10 years ago, and the fall production will be the play’s first time being performed for audiences. The story is inspired by Frankford-Book’s real-life experiences; nearly two decades ago, she acted as her ill father’s caregiver until his passing. The play incorporates characters such as Jan’s brothers, a local doctor and a funeral director, who are inspired by Frankford-Book’s own brothers and the individuals who helped her navigate her father’s death. Frankford-Book will play the leading role of Jan, and she is co-directing the production with Wayne Rhinier. “Everyone can relate to this play. Everyone has suffered grief in some

way,” Frankford-Book said. “It’s the story of a father wanting only the best for his kids, even in his last moments, but it also has some hilarious characters. It’s my way of paying homage to people across Lancaster County.” Doors will open one hour before each show, and general
admission seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Adults may purchase tickets for a suggested minimum donation, and children age 12 and under may purchase tickets at a discounted price. Children may also pay for admission with the donation of a canned good, which Promise Players
will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. To purchase tickets in advance, visit https://tinyurl.com/the1youneed or call the church office at 717-464-2050 during its regular operating hours of Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Morr Range, 2488 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster, is currently collecting donations for multiple local nonprofits in the Southern End. During each month until the end of December, the indoor shooting range will accept donations for a different organization through its annual campaign to support those in need throughout the community. Each nonprofit has provided Morr Range with a list of specific items it needs the most. Donations may be dropped off during the range’s normal business hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays. Donors will receive a ticket for a prize drawing for each item that they drop off. A prize drawing will be held at the end of each month for rewards such as clothing, accessories, firearms and training class vouchers from Morr Range. Until Tuesday, Oct. 31, Morr Range is collecting items for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) in Quarryville. SNM’s list of requested donations includes several items for its food bank, such as chicken noodle soup, spam, canned meats, granola bars, fruit cups and other nonperishable goods. From Wednesday, Nov. 1, to Thursday, Nov. 30, the range will highlight two Kirkwood-based nonprofits that serve veterans in the community: Warriors on the Water Ltd. and Woerth It Hollow. Warriors on the Water Ltd. offers free outdoor recreational activities such as fishing and boating for veterans and first responders. The organization has requested donations of fishing rods, tackle See Food drive pg 8

Humane Pennsylvania (HPA) recently announced that the organization has started partnering with PetSmart, located at 2395 Lincoln Highway East in Lancaster, to offer pet adoptions for cats and critters in need of loving forever homes. Since Aug. 30, 12 cats and six guinea pigs from HPA have taken up residence at the Lancaster PetSmart. Of those 18 pets, nine cats and all guinea pigs have already been adopted including Ruby, one of the longest feline residents at the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving, tallying up a total of 150 days in HPA’s care. Adopters wishing to provide a forever home for shelter pets are encouraged to stop by the Lancaster PetSmart or visit www.humanepa.org. All potential adopters are required to go through Humane Pennsylvania’s adoption screening process. Approval is not guaranteed. Some exclusions may apply. Adoptions include Humane Pennsylvania’s 30-day Adoption Health Supplement; spaying or neutering prior to adoption; vaccinations, including current rabies vaccination, and de-worming medication; flea treatment; microchipping and chip registration; and a free one-pound bag of Science Diet pet food. To view Humane Pennsylvania’s available adoptable pets, visit humanepa.org/adoption /available-pets or meet them at the Lancaster PetSmart during normal hours of operation. PetSmart is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information about adoptions, call the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving at 717-393-6551 or email adoptlancaster @humanepa.org.

soap, garbage bags, blankets, dog food, towels and other items for canines. On Saturday, Dec. 2, Charlie’s Crusaders will have adoptable dogs at the range and offer information on its mission. Morr Range has held an annual drive for more than five years. Previously, the range hosted a one-day event to collect donations and to give out prizes to participants. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the range changed the format of the drive to a collection period that lasted three months; it decided to return to the longer collection period as it resulted in a higher amount of donations. Tracy Fornwalt, part owner of Morr Range and SNM board member, created the drive to benefit the southern Lancaster County community, where she has lived her whole life. “My partner and I were born and raised in the area, and we’re committed to giving back and being a valuable member of the community,” Fornwalt said. “Starting the drive was an easy decision, and our community has been fantastic.” To view the full list of requested donations, visit search for “Morr Indoor Range and Training Center” on Facebook.
