his year’s Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) fall play will be two versions of Neil Simon’s classic comedy “The Odd Couple.” The original play premiered on Broadway in 1964 and resulted in a movie and a popular 1970s television series. Simon revised the play to feature a female cast in 1985 to create “The Female Odd Couple.” LSHS’ thespian society will run two performances each of the male and female plays. “The Odd Couple” follows the adventures of Felix and Oscar. Felix is neat and critical while Oscar is messy and irresponsible. Hijinks ensue and each man learns about the positive effects

Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive And Giveaway Day Planned The year was 2013, and Gregory Frey was a junior at Penn Manor High School. To celebrate his 17th birthday, Gregory went on a fishing trip to Sullivan County with a friend and the friend’s family in late September. On the day they were supposed to come home, some of them went fishing. Gregory grew frustrated because his line kept getting tangled, so he walked away. When Gregory’s friend went to find Gregory because it was time to leave, Gregory was found unconscious and unresponsive. CPR was performed on Gregory for over an hour, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. It has been eight years since the incident, and the Frey family is still not entirely sure how Gregory passed away. Instead of taking the average eight weeks, Gregory’s autopsy took around 12 weeks, but

results were inconclusive. In honor of Gregory, former Penn Manor School District crossing guard Charlee Seiple started a coat drive. Seiple saw firsthand how many kids needed warm clothing for winter, and she dedicated the coat drive to Gregory because “he was the kind of kid who would give you the shirt off his back,” stated Emily Frey, Gregory’s older sister. “My dad would always be like, ‘ Where’s your such-andsuch?’ And he would say, ‘Oh, I gave it to so-and-so because they needed it.’” Emily has been running the Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive for the past six and a half years after Seiple moved out of state. Just last year, Emily made the Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive an official nonprofit organization. She and Gregory were born 14 months and two days apart. “He was my built-in best friend,” she said.

People can donate their gently used or brand-new warm clothing, such as coats, gloves, hats, socks, shoes, and pajamas, until Saturday, Nov. 6. There are a number of donation locations. In Millersville, there are donation bins at Tropical Smoothie Café, Q Nails, Scheid Produce Inc., Hess Auto Care, Joe’s Shoe Service, Billie Jean’s Hair & Nail Studio, Gamber Physical Therapy & Fitness, Charles’ Laundry, and Bert’s Bottle Shop. In Willow Street, donation bins are located at Change From Within Counseling Services, Morr Range, and Penn State Medical Health Group. In Manheim, there is a donation bin at America’s Auto Auc-

Monday night’s lightning “I think anyone watching delay pushed things back and the game was astounded that were looking to even the we did not knock more in score. But on a chilly, wet, and based on all of our opportuniwindy evening, Solanco preties,” Lebo said. “But we need to give credit where credit is due. Solanco’s goalkeeper (Caroline Drumm) and back line played one heck of a game.” Drumm carried the Mules through the second half, denying shot after shot. All told, 12 for the game. L-S also delivered seven corner kicks that bounced around in the box before being cleared, including a goal-line save by Rilyn Saner. Lampeter’s Sophie Rhodes even ripped a shot off the crossbar. The Pioneers, who end their season at 12-8, were without their senior starting goalie who went out three weeks ago with a hand injury. “We have been playing a sophomore and freshman goalkeeper (Elayna Torres, Peyton Bachman) with no prior varsity experience,” noted Lebo. “They both did a good job stepping in when photo by Mona Steinhauer they were needed. It eventually found the foot of Sarah Landis who shot it past Pioneer keeper Peyton Bachman in the 22nd minute. eighth game in a row. They also clinched at least a tie for their second straight Section Three crown. Giovanni Malatesta scored three touchdowns, all in the first half, rushing for 73-yards on ten carries. Quarterback Berkeley Wagner also scored three times and rushed for 72-yards on eight carries. He and Malatesta each scored twice in the first quarter as the Pioneers exploded for 35 points. Jackson Heeter’s fumble recovery TD capped the scoring. The second quarter featured three straight L-S scores, pushing the lead to 56-zip. Ephrata closed the half with a 13-yard TD run and, with the clock running in the second half, Lampeter’s Julian Lopez scored the final TD of the night with 2:22 left in the game. Andrew Reidenbaugh booted all nine PATs. The hosts held Ephrata’s stud rusher, Andrew Weidman, who has gone over 1200 yards, to a slim 24. Ephrata finished with 89 yards on the night. “That second half I wanted our young kids to execute on both sides of the ball,” said Ridenour. “They had a great week of practice on our scout teams and get better each week. “Our offensive line, as a unit, played really well. To rush for 380 yards in a game says a lot about the kind of night those kids had up front.” Other key contributors included Payton Cunningham with a 60-yard rushing night, Beau Heyser with six solo tackles and one sack, Harry Wolgemuth and Drexton Frank with five total tackles each, Luke Hines with one sack, and Hunter Hildenbrand, Malatesta and Nick DelGrande with one interception each. The Pioneers have given up the fewest points in the L-L League with 102. FIELD HOCKEY For the first time in probably eight years, the field hockey team (7-10) did not qualify for districts. “It’s the first time in a couple of years that we didn’t qualify for leagues either,” said head coach Katrina Swarr. “ We had a lot of juniors on the team that lacked varsity experience so I

thought we might struggle. Plus two of our big scorers graduated. But I am confident we will come back better and stronger next year, for sure,” she continued. “ We have some current juniors who are rockstars and outstanding leaders and will lead the charge next year. They do not like to lose.” While the Pioneers’ season ended early, they did grab a win over nemesis Donegal and had a handful of players voted as all-stars.

“It’s always good to beat a team you have battled with back-and-forth for several years,” said Swarr of the Donegal win. As for the all-stars, voted as First Team selections were Tori Heiserman (forward) and Maggie Swarr (back). In the midfield, Keiva Middleton was a Second Team selection while Kara Scranton (back) was an Honorable Mention. Academic all-stars (seniors only) were Emaly Garrett and Middleton.

Royer’s To Collect Holiday Cards, Coloring Pages Royer’s Flowers & Gifts is collecting holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November in each of its stores. Royer’s will present the collected items to the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program. Cards and coloring pages may be dropped off at any Royer’s store during normal business hours. Free coloring pages can be downloaded at www.royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers several guidelines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear service member” or “Dear veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those who

have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God bless you” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.

Writeface, a nonprofit organization that provides free writing and journaling workshops for veterans and their families, will host a spoken word festival, along with music, on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11. The program, “Veterans, Values, & Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace,” will be held in partnership with Music for Everyone at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, in Steinman Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The festival will feature poetry, storytelling, music, and more - all written by veterans.

Writeface’s process helps veterans who are having difficulty readjusting to explore their own feelings and helps them communicate more effectively to family, friends, and co-workers. Writeface strives to change the statistics for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anyone interested in learning about the organization’s programs is encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees at the Ware Center. For more information, visit www. writeface.org or call Scott Hower at 717-209-0410.

Agency To Supply Veterans With Groceries LancasterFunding.org, a nonprofit agency based in Lancaster, is seeking donations to help veterans age 68 and older with the expenses of purchasing food. Initially, the program will cover Lancaster County, but the goal is to expand throughout Pennsylvania and eventually to other states. The agency was launched in February by veteran Dale Vega to supply veterans with groceries. The program is sponsored by donations from small businesses and

individuals, and Vega collects donated funds and passes them on to veterans to buy groceries. In addition to donations of funds, the agency is seeking a donated SUV or van so it can deliver groceries to veterans, as well as a donated computer to track its processes. Anyone interested in donating a vehicle, assisting the agency in creating a website, or donating funds may call 717-669-9323 or email dalevega2@outlook.com. Donations are tax-deductible.

started here, my love of HO trains just came flooding back to me.” “HO,” as Christopher explained, is the type of scale used for the model trains. The trains are 187th the size of their real counterparts, and the members said they believe it’s the best scale for displaying accurate details and providing the best viewing experience. Membership in the club is open to anyone who loves trains. “We have no official officers, no dues, no membership fees,” said Christopher. “We’re just a bunch of guys who love trains and love to get together. Our only rule is you have to get along with everybody.” The display is constantly

evolving as new members join and add to it, so even if you’ve seen it once, you’ll see something new the next time you visit, Cohan said. And the members of the club are on hand each weekend to answer questions or point out unique features of the display. “If you’ve ever enjoyed watching trains, you’ll love this,” Christopher said. The Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at 21 N. Second St., Columbia, on Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 27 through Jan. 9 (except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). Admission is free. For more information, search for “Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad” on Facebook.

The display is located on the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society.

On the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, you can find a bunch of kids indulging in their passion. But these aren’t your typical kids - most are in their 60s and 70s. “ We’re really kids who never grew up,” explained Chris Cohan, one of the younger members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad. “We just love trains.” The group shares its enthusiasm for HO-scale model trains on the fourth Sunday of the month from May through October. Beginning Thanksgiving weekend, the display runs on Saturdays and Sundays through the first weekend after the new year. “We do this because we love it, and we do it for the kids,” said member Rick Christopher. “And, we do it for the kids who are maybe just a little bit older than you’d expect.”

The 2,200-square-foot layout features a section depicting Columbia’s riverfront in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, created by member Tony Segro. “Tony scratch-built every one of these buildings,” said Cohan, noting that two in the layout still stand in Columbia today. Segro started on the layout in 2000, working on and off over the next 16 years to complete it. “I used photos from the historical society to make it as accurate as I could,” he stated. “They had a lot of information I could use.” The layout also includes scenes created by the imagination of the club members. For Walter Bosch, who came to check out the display on a recent Sunday and was joined by a crowd of other visitors, the trains offer a chance to indulge in nostalgia. “I love watching them,” he said. Christopher noted that when he joined the club about four years ago, it brought him right back to his childhood. “I’ve loved trains since I was a little kid,” he said, echoing the sentiment of most of the members in the club. “When I
