The story of “The Nutcracker” has its roots in “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The ballet tells the tale of a young girl, named Clara, who is given the gift of a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve. Clara’s beloved toy then battles the Mouse King. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the score for the ballet, which was first performed in 1892 and has since

What better way to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness, and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? “I love how relational the businesses in the Southern End are,”

Holiday Home Tour rom pg 1 This year, the Strasburg Heritage Society has partnered with Strasburg Borough and the LampeterStrasburg Women’s Club to combine multiple holiday activities during the weekend. On Friday, Dec. 1, a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Strasburg Borough Municipal Building, 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg. The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will kick off the evening with a performance from its brass ensemble, and welcoming remarks will be delivered by Mayor Bruce Ryder. Following the mayor’s address, Christmas carol singing will be provided by Janet Rawleigh, and the lyrics of each carol will be displayed to allow audience members to join in. After the caroling activity, youngsters from Sunshine Corners Daycare Center will sing a few holiday tunes. Santa will make his entrance in a firetruck at 7 p.m. After the ceremony, Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will sell coffee, hot chocolate and other refreshments, and Speckled Hen Coffee and Bespoke Brewing will operate a cookie decorating station. The Lancaster County Art Association will also have a station for attendees to make Christmas ornaments. The Strasburg-Heisler Library will remain open to host various activities during the event, including a Christmas story reading. “The whole idea behind the event is to bring the town together for a day of community,” said Kay Graybill, a member of the Lampeter-Strasburg Women’s Club and the organizer of the annual Christmas tree lighting. “Everything is always so crazy this time of year. It’s good to slow down for a night.”

ple on their list. Not sure what to buy? Consider a gift card to a local business, restaurant, or smaller food merchant so your loved ones can splurge on themselves and possibly discover a new favorite location. Additionally, subscriptions to small businesses such as health clubs and massage therapy services can be the gift that keeps on giving for recipients, providing ongoing benefits to the business, as well. Purchasing gifts and gift cards isn’t the only way to provide support to local businesses during this festive season. While you’re shopping retailers, consider dining out at local eateries, whether that means trying a new venue or patronizing an old favorite. Holiday meals and gatherings can also be catered by area restaurants, which provides the double benefit of simplifying the hosts’ to-do lists while supporting the local economy.

said Jona Green, president of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. “These businesses are run by your neighbors who you see at the grocery store and church.” Before making holiday shopping lists, visit local stores and base gift ideas on items they have in stock. Chances are those gifts will be one-of-a-kind. Gifts purchased from local stores are also likely to feature a local flair, as independent businesses tend to offer products and services that are reflective of the customers and the community they serve. Green, who works as a financial advisor in Willow Street, said the community is tightly knit and values its closeness. “Many businesses here contribute to the community in more ways than offering a product or service,” Green added. “They sponsor events and sports teams and reach out to neighbors in need. We play well together here in the Southern End.” As Plaid Friday and Small Business Saturday approach, marking the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, keep an eye out for sales on local social media. Research sales and inventories of local businesses you want to support so you’re ready to go once the sales launch. One great way to experience local retailers is to shop in person. This method allows shoppers to get a feel for an item, size it up, and even inspect its quality prior to purchasing it.
