A Musical Interlude LSO Representatives Visit Wickersham Elementary School BY ANN MEAD ASH
Imagine four children ranging in age from kindergarten to third grade so enraptured by an hourlong presentation that they are surprised when it is over. What could grab and hold their attention? Why, music, of course, but not just any music. The four children were in a SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) afterschool class at Wickersham Elementary, and the presentation was made by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concertmaster Luigi Mazzocchi and assistant concertmaster Nina Zubadi. The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the students were “lost in learning.” “They had an engaging conversation. It was stimulating, See SWAN pg 11
INSIDE THIS ISSUE The First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg stocks various food items and other products to help people in need.
irst Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, located at 101 South Decatur St., Strasburg, formed a community food bank in 2015. “It’s for anyone who walks in the door,” said June Stum, chair of the food bank committee. “It’s really a mission of our church to reach out to folks in the community, and it’s far reaching … however far it wants to be. We just want to help folks.” Stum noted that the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg is very mission oriented. The church’s pastor, the Rev. Robert “Bob” Bronkema, lived in Italy and Russia, the latter
F
of which is where he and his wife ran a soup kitchen and an orphanage. “He is so focused on community, and this (food bank) is a community outreach thing,” stated Stum. According to Stum, the food bank has become the central focus of a social ministry that Bronkema is attempting to build and grow. The church’s food bank has approximately 60 registered families, some of which come from Conestoga, York, and Gordonville. Stum noted that the food bank committee does not turn anyone away, and eligibility is not income-based. Those registered can come to the food bank as needed; there is no limit on the number of visits. If
there is a need, the food bank committee wants to help fill that need. The food bank is open every Tuesday and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. Families looking to register with the food bank are asked to complete a brief intake form. The committee provides a reusable tote bag, which should be brought to the food bank to pick up groceries each time. Shoppers may select their own items. In addition to nonperishable items, the food bank offers dairy products, bread, personal care items, paper goods, eggs, and meat. The committee recently contracted with Fashion Cents of Lampeter to provide registered families with gift cards to

the consignment shop. Families can receive a gift card once a month. Stum acknowledged that it can be difficult for people to ask for assistance. “We just want to help them. That’s why we just welcome them with open arms,” she assured. The food bank committee welcomes donations, which can be dropped off anytime the church is open. Donations should be placed in the bins designated for the food bank, located near the welcome desk. A full list of donation items can be found at www.straspres.org. For more information, call the church office at 717-687-6030 or email Stum at jastum710@comcast.com.

society’s archive building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. Custom orders are also available and can be made until Wednesday, Dec. 1. Those interested in preordering can call the society at 717548-2679 or Peg Wurst at 717-3925023. Only cash and checks will be accepted as form of payment. To prepare for the annual sale, about five people make decorative items through the summer and into the fall. They craft ornamental arrangements, paint pinecones, tie ribbons and bows, and more. The greens themselves are pruned and cut after Thanksgiving. Wurst, a member of SLCHS’ archive committee, noted that handling and making items close to the sale keeps them fresh. Wurst also mentioned that there is a need for greens, so as people prune their boxwood, juniper, and other evergreen trees or shrubs, they can bring in a batch of greens themselves to the society, or they can contact the society and members will have someone come to their location. Wurst is also looking for volunteers to help make arrangements for the sale. Volunteers will meet for five days from Monday, Nov. 29, to Friday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of the society’s archives. Lunch and snacks will be provided. “It’s a lot of fun!” exclaimed Wurst. “And volunteers don’t need to be there all day. We will take whatever they can contribute.” Those who are not vaccinated are encouraged to wear a mask. Proceeds from the greens sale help to support the society members’ work to preserve the Robert Fulton Birthplace and local heritage and to maintain the society’s growing collection of artifacts as well as family and community records. Pioneers Finish Fourth in PIAA Cross Country BY MONA STEINHAUER
Lampeter-Strasburg’s Colin Whitaker earned a sixth place medal in the PIAA Championships held Saturday, November 6 in Hershey.
In their biggest race of the season, Lampeter-Strasburg’s boys cross country team made history. On Saturday, November 6, at the Parkview Course near the Giant Center, the boys competed in the PIAA Championships. They are the first cross country team in L-S history to do so and their response to the challenge was a fourth-place finish. Led by Colin Whitaker’s sixth place medal effort (16:22), the Pioneers were just one point behind third place Northwestern Lehigh. Lewisburg Area High School
ran away with the AA team title with five runners in the top 26 for 87 team points. Last year, as a freshman, Whitaker placed 12th overall in 17:18. Also placing for the Pioneers were juniors Ben Devine (31st, 17:16.4) and Parker Stoner (37th, 17:21.4). Adrian Elia clocked a 17:43.9 for 64th place while Luka Vranich (110th, 18:11.2), and David Pritchard (165th, 18:38.6) rounded out the top five. Luke Smith settled for 190th in 19:06.5. “This was the first time for everyone, other than Colin, to compete in the state

said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.” Vuolo is especially looking forward to a return visit by Mazzocchi and Zubadi. “(LSO) will be sending the same musicians to the same classes multiple times throughout the year,” she explained, “so the school children will be able to create a relationship with them.” On Friday, Nov. 19, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give
(ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, which is the the largest per-capita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. Individuals may make donations using a credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org.

It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community.
