train A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity Model fundraiser BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

n Saturday, Nov. 25, Abby Calderwood of Strasburg will travel to Radio City Music Hall in New York City to be part of the Radio City Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular. Abby, age 6, will be accompanied by her mother, Kim Calderwood, and grandmother, Debbie Mexdorf, who will perform with a barbershop choir that comprises singers from across Lancaster County. When Kim and Debbie’s choir performs “Silent Night,” Abby will join the vocalists on stage to provide a translation of the lyrics for the audience in American Sign Language. “We are exceptionally excited to represent Lancaster on one of the most historically significant stages in the country,” Kim said. “This is extraordinarily special for our family as three generations will be together performing to music, which is something that is a foundation of who we are as a family.” Every year, a group of singers from Lancaster County is invited to perform in the annual holiday series at Radio City Music Hall. After Kim and Debbie were invited to join the group this year, Abby wished to join her mother and grandmother for practice so she could watch. At the rehearsal, the organizers of the show offered Abby the opportunity to play her own role as a sign language interpreter. Although she did not yet have any experience with the language, Abby took on the challenge of learning the lyrics for the song. While Kim and

local residents by choir director, pianist and Lancaster native Darla Bair. In 2016, Bair was asked to bring her children’s choir to Radio City Music Hall to participate in

the show, and she has returned with various singers almost every year since. For more information, contact Bair at musictohealour world@gmail.com.

For many families, the return of the holiday season is accompanied by unique traditions and timehonored festivities. Some people enjoy caroling through their neighborhood, and others share a plump ham on Christmas morning. However, local residents Al Strausner and his grandson Matthew Palmeri prefer to celebrate the season by taking a different track - literally. Every December, Strausner and Palmeri travel to West Willow United Methodist Church, 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street, where they join forces to assemble model train displays. The display is then made available to view until the end of the month, during which time Strausner and Palmeri receive monetary donations and nonperishable food items for local food banks. This year, the two locomotive enthusiasts will collect donations for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in Quarryville and Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services in Lancaster; each organization operates a food bank in its respective area. Last year, Strausner and Palmeri collected See Train display pg 3 EPHRATA

Debbie have been rehearsing over the last few months, Abby has been hard at work watching instructional videos and honing her skills in preparation for the show. “It’s only been a few months, but she’s developed a love for it,” Kim said. Abby and her family have a strong connection to music. Kim studied as a music major at Messiah College, and Debbie regularly competes as a member of another choir, which won fourth place in an international competition at the beginning of November. This show may be Abby’s first time playing the role of a sign language interpreter, but she is an experienced performer just like her mother and grandmother; she has previously joined the cast of Popovsky Performing Arts Studio’s production of “Annie,” and she had her first piano recital on Nov. 19. Additionally, Abby began performing in dance recitals when she was 2 years old. “This will be the biggest thing she’s done yet, and I’m excited for her,” Kim said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Abby is a first-grade student at Lampeter Elementary. Beyond her passion for music, she enjoys gymnastics, horseback riding and working with other kids to complete projects in the area for Mitzvah Kids. Abby said she is looking forward to seeing New York City, where she will go ice skating with Kim and Debbie on the day of the Christmas Spectacular. The opportunity to open for the Rockettes’ show is annually offered to

The sets comprise multiple detailed models of buildings and train cars, and each one is proportionately scaled to serve as a replica of its real and functional counterpart. “We know why we exist and how to do it,” said Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “(But) what do we want to see done (in the future)? What is the clear vision?” The Factory Ministries, which provides resources for children, youths, and adults from the Together Community Center, formerly the Paradise Elementary School, underwent a reassessment four years ago when Nagle came on board. “In the fall of 2019, the board and the executive team worked through our mission and our values to clarify our mission,” said Nagle. “We are all about empowerment of people, connecting them to resources, and building community by walking with those who are underresourced.” Now, the ministry is looking ahead five years beginning with a listening phase that

has already included meetings with The Factory staff members and focus groups including donors, volunteers, community members, business owners, and local pastors. “We are listening and talking through needs they see in the community and what do they understand The Factory to be,” said Nagle, who noted that the next step is to go wider in the process. “We would love to hear from the community,” said Nagle. “We want a broad response.” Nagle noted that questions would center on needs, issues area residents are facing, and more. He added that the ministry ventures beyond the bounds of the Pequea Valley School District, reaching into the Strasburg area. Ellie Green, executive assistant with The Factory, said she wants area residents to feel invited to complete the survey, which will be available online. “Questions will be multiple choice,” she said,

noting that the final question will require a longer answer, but that survey takers need not complete each question to move forward. “Questions will be about what The Factory does and the impact it has, along with the three most urgent needs the ministry should tackle in the (next) five years.” Readers may access the survey at https:// tinyurl.com/y88mdh35. The survey may also be found by searching for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook. The results of the surveys and focus groups will help the team to craft a statement that describes where the organization is going and what it will look like when it gets there. Green noted that major community needs, emerging needs, and biggest challenges are among the issues the organization hopes to identify. Both Nagle and Green said that they hope to have results of the work available for area See Factory Ministries pg 10

Train display from pg 3 traveling attraction that was popular in the ’50s and ’60s. Strausner’s interest in trains was sparked when he was 6 years old, and his collection of models started with a new Plasticville model building. He received a new model as a gift

from his aunt and uncle on his birthdays and holidays; many of them remain in his collection to this day. Palmeri became enamored with his grandfather’s passion when he was 8 years old, and the two have bonded over their model

train sets for the last seven years. “My favorite aspect of building the displays is spending time with my grandfather and doing something we both enjoy,” Palmeri said. “I always admired his display, and I began building model railroad

displays to have fun with him during the holidays.” Strausner and Palmeri will open their display on Saturday, Dec. 9, and they will receive donations from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of the month.

Yuletide site will encompass six stages, including the Victorian Mount Hope Mansion, the Globe Theater and the Hart Stage. Various food booths will serve both Faire favorites and holiday treats and pourhouses will offer spiced hot beverages, mulled wine and specialty beverages created just for the event. Also offered will be a marketplace offering unique gifts and holiday treasures. Visitors will be treated to stage shows and on-street encounters with The Fantasticals - Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley, Tiny Tim, The Sugar Plum Fairy, Jack Frost, The Snow Queen, Father Christmas and, for the adults, Krampus. Stage shows will include Yuletide Carolers lending their voices to the festivities, Christmas Trunke Shows and a Storytime Adventure with Father Christmas. A separate cast of townsfolk will bring the seasonal shire to life. Each day, guests can join the Grand Yuletide Parade as it winds its way through the shire. Faire goers will also be able to enjoy some of their favorite royal performers, including Arthur Greenleaf Holmes, Hob the Troll, the Harmless Danger Juggling Show and Sylvan Farelight. Yuletide at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will open on Black Friday, Nov. 24, and will continue on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10. Tickets are date specific and must be purchased through the Faire’s online box office. Tickets will not be sold at the gate. Guests can purchase tickets online, including the day of the event.
