Members of the Garden Spot FFA of Lampeter-Strasburg High School competed at the National FFA Convention on Oct. 28 in Indianapolis. Gracie Albright, Melanie Cox, Rachael Lee and Katie Ranck constituted the Agriculture Communications Career Development Event team and won several medals both as a group and as individuals.

The team placed fourth in the nation and received a gold team placing. Albright received a gold medal and placed fourth individually, Ranck and Cox received gold medals and Lee received a silver medal.

The Garden Spot FFA team placed first at the state convention in June, qualifying it to

compete at the national convention. The state convention models the national competition; the students took individual quizzes on editing and communications, wrote both opinion and editorial pieces and designed an overall media plan pitch as a team. The individual scores were tallied in addition to the team’s overall score to determine placements and medals awarded.

This year, participants in the contest were prompted to pitch a local organization that is involved with a community garden and explain how they would help to develop and improve it further.

The Garden Spot FFA team chose

to work with The Edible Classroom, a nonprofit organization that partners with schools to create and maintain gardens for a hands-on learning experience. “We thought that The Edible Classroom had a lot to bring to the table,” said Ranck. “(The organization) does a lot of community outreach in our school district, so it was the one we were most connected to.”

Each member of the Garden Spot FFA team attended the national convention last year as an educational trip but competed for the first time this year. “It was a great experience to be able to

see all of the different pieces of things we’ve learned being applied in real-life scenarios,” said Albright. “It’s all relevant to the careers we want to go into and serves as a way to help us grow our understanding more.”

There were many different aspects that the students needed to factor into their pitch, including graphic design, which team member Lee was tasked with. Lee designed the website for the team’s project and hopes to pursue a career in graphic and web design after high school. “Overall, it was an amazing experience. I would love to take what I’ve learned from being a part of FFA and build on it in college,” said Lee.

For more information on the Garden Spot FFA, search for “LSHS Garden Spot FFA” on Facebook.

Souvenir Photo Book Available

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg will accept advance orders for its new souvenir photo book, which is due out in late December. This colorful souvenir photo book captures the excitement of the museum’s historic trains and what is in store for visitors when they explore the museum. The 6by-6-inch hardback souvenir book contains 88 color and black-and-white images over 96 pages.

Titled “The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Pictures,” the book features photos and informative captions that show the range of vintage railroad equipment on exhibit in the museum,

including the nearly 100 locomotives and railroad cars spanning the mid-19th through the late 20th centuries. Photos and captions were generated and assembled by a committee of museum volunteers and staff. The foreword was written by museum director Patrick C. Morrison, and the book is being published by Schiffer Publishing of Atglen.

For more information or to preorder a book, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org and look under Visit and click on Store or call 717-687-8628. Proceeds from book sales will benefit the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Pioneers Dominate Susquehanna Township

After opening the post-season with a first-round bye in the District Three 4A tournament, the Pioneers got back to work Friday, November 11 with a home game against Susquehanna Township. The sixth seed fell behind early and often in the 52-6 quarterfinal victory by L-S.

“They have some playmakers,” said head coach Victor Ridnour. “They have a number of kids who can ball the distance. Our defense did a really solid job of bottling them up and getting our offense the ball with great field position. I thought we had a chance to win the game, but I thought it would have been closer.

“It was good to get the offense back on track,” he continued. “I thought we played good complimentary football. We were pretty good in all three phases of the game.”

Carson Coleman, with a hat trick of touchdowns, jumpstarted the first quarter with a pair of scores and an early 15-0 lead as L-S capitalized on great field position after botched punts by the visitors. He tallied his 15th rushing touchdown of the year with an eight-yard run down the

right side with 8:32 left. Peter Fiorello booted the PAT for the first points of the night.

About 5:30 later, Coleman scooted six yards to paydirt. Trent Wagner’s two-point conversion pushed the lead to 15-0 with 2:53 left in the quarter.

Wagner (10-16, 160 yards) opened the second quarter with a 29-yard touchdown toss to Hunter Hildenbrand, who shrugged off the coverage to haul in the pass. Fiorello kicked a second PAT to push the lead to 22-0 and then nailed a 44-yard field goal, extending the advantage to 25-0 with 6:11 left in the half.

Susquehanna finally responded when Dorian Smith raced 80-yards down the right side to the house and prevented the shutout.

That momentum, however, was short-lived as L-S scored its fourth TD of the night when Wagner found Hildenbrand (4 receptions, 94 yards) with a 24-yard strike. Fiorello’s PAT made it 31-6 with 54 seconds left in the half.

The second half was more of the same. Wagner scored on a 32-yard run and Coleman (113 yards on 20 carries, 2 receptions for 30 yards) followed up with a 2yarder, this time with Eric

Doutrich booting the PAT to cap the third quarter. Louie Malatesta racked up 40 yards on seven carries in Lampeter’s final scoring drive which ended with Dominic Brown’s four-yard run in the fourth quarter that sealed Susquehanna Township’s fate.

“Louie ran the ball well in the second half,” said Ridnour. “He made some outstanding cuts. We had kids make plays on both sides of the ball and on special teams. It was a good solid team win.”

Luke Hines, Jackson Heeter, and Julian Lopez combined for 17 tackles to anchor the defense.

FIELD HOCKEY AWARDS

The field hockey team officially capped its season with their end-of-the-year banquet and the announcement of the following award winners by head coach Katrina Swarr.

Mackenzie WesterlundRookie of the Year; Avery Brown - Pioneer Award; Olivia Heiser - Impact Award; Kara Scranton and Maggie Swarr - Outstanding Defensive Players, who combined for 18 defensive saves; Tori Heiserman - Outstanding Offensive Player (10 goals, 5 assists); Marissa Rice - Most Valuable Player.

The field hockey team was also well represented in the recent Lancaster-Lebanon League all-star balloting. Tori Heiserman, Marissa Rice, and Maggie Swarr were Section Two First Team allstars. Lyndi Wall, Ally Raub and Kara Scranton were Sec-

ond Team selections while Breigh Bauer, Avery Brown, Ally Raub, Kara Scranton, Maggie Swarr and Brooke Zuber all received Academic all-star recognition.

Finally, Swarr was also voted to the L-L All-League team.

VOLLEYBALL

As voted on by coaches, the 2022 Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association recently announced the All-District Three AAA team. Seniors Jenna Hover (middle hitter) and Emily Mullin (setter/outside hitter) were both voted as Second Team all-stars.

Home Tour

Many of the homes included in the tour date back to the 18th century and are privately owned. The owners will open their historic homes, which will be fully decorated for the holiday season. The majority of the homes are in the same vicinity on East Main Street in downtown Strasburg, making the tour mostly walkable. One exception will be a home just outside of Strasburg that was built by Jacob Lefever in 1799. The property itself can be traced back to William Penn, and some of Lefever’s descendants, the Sangrey family, now own the property.

Included in the tour will also be a barn that was constructed in 1806 and now serves as an art studio and gallery for Glenn Eshelman. During the tour, Eshelman will display many of his own paintings depicting biblical themes and his early childhood days growing up on a farm. The barn will also have a display of information and equipment from Sight & Sound Theatre’s early days.

The Holiday Home Tour is one of the heritage society’s largest fundraisers and has been held for the last 11 years, with the exception of a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees often travel from out of state to participate in the tour, and many local families take the tour each year to kick off their holiday season and even garner ideas for how to decorate their own homes.

“I love meeting all of the people that take the tour,” said Lorna Mentzner, a member of the Strasburg Heritage Society. “It’s such a nice community event, and it’s always wonderful to see people out and about enjoying themselves.”

Each year, Mentzner goes out into the community to recruit homeowners for the tour. Although some homeowners in Strasburg prefer to keep their residencies private, many locals who take the tour often open their own houses up the following year. “We’re so fortunate here in Strasburg that people are so gracious

and open their homes, as well as make sure that their homes are fully decorated in time,” said Mentzner.

The tour will take guests to various historic homes in Strasburg that have been decorated for the holidays.

A gift drive for families and children living in the Southern End will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 17, at Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. The event will replace the previously held Solanco toy drive and has been extended to include all children 18 years old or younger.

The Solanco School District will accept donations until Sunday, Dec. 11, at all Solanco schools, as well as the administration building. The drive is being coordinated by Avery Hill, Shanna Hecker and Amanda Esterly, who are all social workers in the Solanco School District.

Hill operates a concurrent Angel Tree project for students in Solanco and has made adjustments to the program to ensure that all students in need are taken care of during the holiday season.

The Angel Tree program collects wish lists from over 100 students each year and acquires five items from each list to gift to students.

This year, the Angel Tree program will be limited to those experiencing homelessness; all other students will be covered under the new gift drive. “We’re expanding on what the toy drive has done for years,” said Hill. “Now that we’re doing the drive in addition to the Angel Tree project, we needed to scale (Angel Tree) back. The gift drive historically covers the younger age groups.”

The Angel Tree project began around a decade ago, as

an initiative to acknowledge students that are experiencing homelessness in Solanco and ensure they experience a nice holiday. The program has grown over the years and received a great deal of support from the community; it is now able to include children over the age of 12, as well as add basic necessities such as winter coats to the list of items given out.

“There has never been a year where we’ve had a request that has gone unfulfilled,” said Hill. “I get requests up to the day before Christ-

mas break for donations. Our community is so supportive of the students that we can always accommodate those in need.” If the change in the drive goes well, Hill said she hopes to continue the new system next year. Due to the larger scope of students covered, the drive needed to change locations to Memorial United Methodist Church to provide the needed space.

Entertaining guests is a labor of love. Much effort goes into preparing a home for the arrival of friends and family, and that includes planning a menu. Hosts and hostesses who are looking to take some of the work off their plates can explore recipes that are less labor-intensive, such as those that employ a slow cooker. While busy families often use them to prepare weeknight meals, slow cookers also can be used when cooking for crowds. In such instances, they free up time for party hosts to tackle other jobs.

This recipe for “Sweet Southern Slow-Cooker Ham,” courtesy of the National Pork Board and Yummly, utilizes a fully cooked, store-bought ham and some sweet and savory accoutrements. The ham can be served on its own, or it can be used to create sliders. Since it serves 12, it is suitable for a crowd.

Sweet Southern Slow-Cooker Ham (Serves 12)

Ingredients:

1 bone-in fully cooked ham (about 5.5 pounds)

1 cup apple cider

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

1/3 cup bourbon (preferably Kentucky)

1/4 cup honey

1/4 cup Dijon style mustard

4 sprigs fresh thyme

Directions:

1. Place the ham in a large slow cooker. Whisk the cider with the brown sugar, bourbon, honey, and mustard. Slowly pour over the ham. Scatter the thyme sprigs into the slow cooker.

2. Cook on high for four hours or on low for eight hours, or until very tender. Remove ham to rest on a cutting board. Pass the remaining cooking liquid through a fine mesh sieve into a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes or until slightly reduced. Cut the ham into chunks or slices. Brush the cut pieces with the cooking liquid before arranging on a platter. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Behind-the-scenes, you will find employees working hard to create and assemble our beautiful publications. Additional staff ensure computers and equipment are running properly, bills are paid and that staff have a safe and clean working environment.

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”

Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.

“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplines - marching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenariobased training.”

Scenarios may include re-enacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-andanswer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible,

Walkers Raise Funds For Dyslexia Center

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its first walk in two years at a new location, the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, on Sept. 24. The new location featured paths leading through the Memorial Grove and gardens. Approximately 20 people participated in the walk, with two children from the center raising close to $2,000. The event raised about $5,000 for the center, which relies on local fundraising to provide free tutoring for children with a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. In addition to free tutoring, the center offers free training for adults who hold a bachelor’s degree, using multisensory structured teaching based on the Orton-Gillingham

approach. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language.

MOAA Christmas Luncheon Set

The Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will hold its annual Christmas luncheon on Sunday, Dec. 4, at Gordinier Hall on the campus of Millersville University, 1 S. George St., Millersville. The social hour will begin at 1 p.m., followed by dinner.

The program will include the installation of chapter officers and directors for 2023 and recognition of outgoing officers, directors, and

program chairs. Attendees are reminded to bring an unwrapped gift for distribution to hospitalized men and women veterans at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.

All current and past military officers are invited. Reservations are required. For details and reservations, contact Jim Cunningham at 717-568-2949 or jetpilot37@comcast.net by Wednesday, Nov. 30. Visit www.moaalancasterchapt.org for additional information.

There is a materials fee.

The center is currently seeking individuals who are interested in taking part in the 2023-24 training year. Applications are due by Thursday, Dec. 15. The training will result in a Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc. certified dyslexia practitioner-1 designation. Graduate credit is also available. Upon completion, 180 Act 48 hours will be awarded to teachers for a fee. Training involves 60 lecture hours spread over the course of the year and 100 supervised practicum hours. The tutoring practicum takes place twice weekly after school hours. Training will begin in March 2023 and conclude in May 2024.

The center, which opened in 2002, has assisted more than 200 children with reading and writing and has trained 60 tutors

as certified dyslexia practitioners. The center serves close to 50 children annually and can accommodate about 30 children per term. Fundraising efforts by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, the board of governors, and the parent group help offset costs associated with operating the program.

Tutoring costs close to $6,000 per child each year, and children are often waitlisted for one to two years before there is an opening. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children in need of help.

For more information, readers may contact the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster at 717-481-5680 or lancaster@cdcinc.org.

Production To Showcase C.S. Lewis Tale

Families and children of all ages can step into the world of Narnia this holiday season via an adaptation of the classic C.S. Lewis story “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”

The show is a co-production between Reverie Actors Company and The Trust Performing Arts Center, with performances taking place at The Trust, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 26 and Dec. 10 and 17, as well as Thursday, Dec. 15. An 11 a.m. show has been set for Saturday, Dec. 3, as well.

LBC senior musical theater majors Bradley Myer and Delaney Bigley are featured in the Reverie Actors Company and The Trust Performing Arts Center co-production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”

The production follows the Pevensie children in their journey into the wardrobe, where they meet characters from Narnia. All roles are performed by two actors in this 45-minute adaptation created by Broadway actress Le Clanché du Rand and toured by the Lincoln Center.

The show features four upper-level musical theater majors from Lancaster Bible College’s Music, Worship, & Performing Arts Department: Delaney Bigley, Mackenzie Islip, Bradley Myer, and Alexander Vogelgesang.

Tickets for the performances can be reserved at www.lancastertrust.com.

Floorball Club Sets Open House

The new Lancaster Floorball Club will hold an open house on Sunday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 6 p.m. at The Volleyball Corner, 2007 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. A free pizza party hosted by Thoze Guyz Pizzeria will take place afterward.

The event will offer an introduction to floorball, a noncontact sport for people of all ages that combines elements of field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, and other sports. The club will supply the equipment, including plastic hockey-type sticks, a ball similar to a Wiffle ball, and the goals; attendees should bring sneakers, shorts, and a T-shirt.

Additionally, 10 practice/game sessions will take place at The Volleyball Corner from 5 to 6 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 4 to Feb. 26, with no sessions on Christmas, New Year’s Day, and the day of the championship professional football game. Separate fees have been set per session and for a package of sessions.

For more information, email Mark at lancasterfloor ball@gmail.com or call 717228-7633. To view a video about floorball, visit https:// bit.ly/ThisIsFloorball.

Born in Reading in July 1926, Connor enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during his senior year of high school.
