Lighting Up The Holidays BY COURTNEY MENGEL
For at least 12 years, the West Lampeter Township has hosted an annual tree-lighting ceremony inside the Lampeter Fire Company. “It’s been a well-oiled machine for a while now,” said event coordinator Anne Dunnenberger. “People who have been involved with it just know what to do, and they just do it, and it all comes together. The community really, really enjoys it.” Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held outside on the grounds of the West Lampeter Township municipal building, 852 Village Road, Lampeter. more than 180 people visited. The year after, the pair saw about 300 visitors. The upcoming display will differ from years prior, but Strausner plans to incorporate several Plasticville buildings like he did before. Today, his entire basement is stocked with Plasticville, and about five years ago, his grandson became interested in collecting, too. “He has two sheets of plywood as platforms, and every inch is covered with Plasticville,” Strausner said. An eighth-grader at Marticville
Middle School, Matthew said he hopes to have a collection as large as his grandfather’s at some point. “Pappy takes me to train shows, and there’s a flea market up in Adamstown, and it’s a pretty big thing,” he stated. “There’s a guy up there and he’s very nice. I bought Plasticville from him last year and he has it for pretty cheap, so I get a lot from him.” See Train Display pg 9

Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 4. Children should arrive at the fire station by 9:30 a.m. They will then be paired with a law enforcement officer and receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s. Children and officers will be bused to the Kohl’s Lincoln Highway East location, where they will shop for Christmas presents for children’s family members. Then, everyone will return to the fire station to eat a bagged lunch and wrap the presents. Officer Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Troop J Lancaster, mentioned that a retired trooper will dress as Santa Claus and the fire company will be decorated with a Christmas tree. Parents should plan to pickup their children around noon.

Trooper Kurt Goldbach (left) participated in last year’s Shop With a Cop and plans to attend this year’s event as well.
“
Osborne said she was excited to announce the return of SWAC. She noted that the program strives to positively impact children ages 6 to 18 in Lancaster County who have had police contact or been victims of unfortunate circumstances. The purpose of the program is not based solely on financial need, but also on the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. “I’m really looking forward to enjoying it and interacting with the kids this year and go all out,” said Osborne. “My volunteers loved it last year. Before I reached out to them this year, they asked, ‘When are you doing Shop With a Cop again?’” Last year, about 16 children participated in SWAC. Osborne hopes to double that

Nominations from pastors, school counselors, and other members of the community for children living in Lancaster County who would benefit from SWAC can be made at https://bit.ly/ShopWith ACop2021. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, Nov. 30. SWAC is sponsored by Camp Cadet of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that provides youths ages 11 to 13 with an in-depth look at careers in law enforcement with the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. To raise funds for SWAC, people can sponsor a child for a set amount, and sponsors and will receive a yard sign. Those interested can email Osborne at kosbornefi@pa.gov. The Girl Scouts of the Hans Herr Service Unit will provide crafts for kids to either make at the event or take home. Dunnenberger said she is very appreciative of everyone, especially the volunteers from the fire companies of Lampeter and West Willow, who helps make the event possible. “If we can do positive things in our community, and people can support them, I think that’s what our children need to see,” said Dunnenberger. “Even though we don’t agree on everything, we can still come together. It’s important to have these traditions and try to continue them.”

The public is invited to attend free, live nutrition and cooking classes via Zoom that will be offered by the Giant Company’s team of dietitians this November and December. On Tuesdays at noon, the dietitians will offer a new series on building fall and holiday-filled charcuterie boards, which contain snacks such as chocolate and cheese. On Mondays at 10:30 a.m., mini chefs age 6 and younger will enjoy a story and create nourishing snacks from fig oatmeal bars to cranberry popcorn balls and Rudolph celery sticks. Every Wednesday at 4 p.m., junior chefs ages 7 to 18 can sharpen their culinary skills by making dishes such as pear and cheddar turkey with maple cinnamon dip or green Grinch mini muffins. Families can also come together in the kitchen on Saturdays at 10 a.m. to start some new baking traditions. The dietitians will offer recipes that range from purple sweet potato pie to cranberry pecan bars and cookies. The dietitians will offer classes on creating side dishes on Thursdays at noon, covering recipes that use cranberries, sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts. Several classes will focus on survival tips and resources, busy season snacks and holiday hacks throughout December. On Mondays, Dec. 6, 13, and 20, at 7 p.m., wellness workshops will be offered that focus on diabetes, weight management and holiday stress reduction. All classes are free to attend, but advance registration is required for each class at www.thegiantcompany nutritionists.eventbrite.com. A complete listing of all of Giant’s virtual nutrition classes and ingredients needed for each class are also available on the event page. In addition, customers can earn 50 Choice Rewards points when they register, provide their card number and attend the entire nutrition class.

The Bulldogs came in averaging 367 yards a game with running back Dylan Wakefield (21 TDs) leading the way. Wakefield, who was held to 98 yards, broke the school’s single season rushing record with 1,395 yards. “They had some explosive offensive players,” noted Reidnour. “Our game plan was to try to minimize their production as much as possible. They were a pretty balanced team. But I thought our whole defense played extremely well. Matthew’s mother, Amy Palmeri, sometimes helps Matthew with his projects. “I tell her to get me this and grab that,” commented Matthew. “I think she’s picked up on what I mean.” Amy, Strausner’s daughter, also keeps track of how many people visit the train display at the church. For this year’s train display, Strausner will coordinate the placement of houses, stores, churches, motels, municipal buildings, diners, and apartment buildings, whereas Matthew will manage the details, including the trees, telephone poles, people, cars, flagpoles, and mailboxes. Matthew noted that there will be choir risers set up along the outside edges of the train display for children to get a better view of the layout. The holiday train display will be open at the church from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, and Sundays, Dec. 12, 19, and 26. There is no cost to attend, but visitors can bring in nonperishable food items, which will be donated to the Conestoga Community Food Bank and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. “I just get excited talking to people about Plasticville,” said Strausner. For more information about the train display, contact Strausner at william.strausner @yahoo.com or 717-917-6922. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced the receipt of a grant from Conagra Brands Foundation to help provide food to children and families in need. This grant will enable the CPFB to increase its capacity to distribute food to its partners through the purchase of new pallet jacks and other essential warehouse equipment. The gift will also help the food bank expand its equity, diversity, and inclusion programs to address inequities of hunger in communities of color. Conagra Brands Foundation has partnered with Feeding America, a domestic hunger relief organization, to help address hunger in communities where Conagra employees live and work.
Conagra locations in central Pennsylvania have partnered with the food bank for more than 20 years, with employees actively volunteering their time and supporting various events and initiatives such as Summer Feeding Programs for youths. New this year, Conagra Brands Foundation made an additional funding commitment to enable food banks to address racial and equity disparities in local communities. The CPFB is committed to addressing these inequities in the months and years ahead and is working with its partners to make sure these communities have access to nutritious food. For more information on CPFB, visit www.centralpafood bank.org or call 717-564-1700.
