Garden Spot FFA competes in national convention

At the end of October, students in the Garden Spot FFA chapter at LampeterStrasburg High School (LSHS) traveled to Indianapolis to participate in the 96th annual National FFA Convention. Over three days, club members competed against other FFA chapters from across the state in contests designed to test their knowledge of various agricultural and environmental topics.

“FFA inspired me to look ahead to what I can do in the future.”

Garden Spot FFA president and LSHS senior Sarah Firestone competed in the extemporaneous public speaking competition. Sarah earned silver in the contest, overall placing 10th in the nation. In the extemporaneous public speaking competition, students chose one of three randomly selected topics related to environmental issues, animal science or the agriculture industry. Once speakers decided on a topic, they had 30 minutes to research the issue and prepare a presentation for a panel of judges. During the first round of the competition,

Sarah’s presentation explored how agriculture producers might take advantage of the growing demand for locally sourced food.

“As a resident of Strasburg, this topic really hit home for me,” said Sarah. “I was able to share the experience of having local food stands and markets on a national level and connect to people who don’t have the same experience.”

Sarah won first place in the

extemporaneous public speaking competition during the 95th annual FFA State Convention in June 2024. Garden Spot FFA alumna Jessica Herr coached Sarah as she prepared for the national convention. Sarah said she became increasingly comfortable speaking and more passionate about the topics as she progressed through the county and regional competitions.

The Garden Spot FFA chapter’s Agricultural Mechanics and Technology Systems team, comprising Jack Ross, Owen Williams, Landon Giberson and Rex Giberson, earned a bronze placement at the national convention. Team members worked together to complete a written agriculturerelated math exam and an activity that involved designing a mold in addition to mixing and pouring

Lancaster County has a long history of unique traditions and community-centered events. From annual celebrations such as Maize and Snitz Fest in Lampeter and East Petersburg’s Blues Festival to county-wide programs like the Miss Lancaster County pageant, every town contributes to the area’s distinct culture. Many annual traditions have withstood the test of time and continue to be held today, but some events, such as Spooknacht, have been lost to time.

In 2024, few people have ever heard of Spooknacht. But prior to the 1970s, the annual event was highly anticipated by community members, and it involved every school in the county. According to archived photographs and clippings from old newspapers, Spooknacht took place every year around Halloween, and the event was organized by the former Lancaster Jaycees. One photograph from LancasterHistory’s archive, believed to have been taken during an event circa 1950, shows members of the Jaycees serving food from a

concrete. Team members also completed a series of practicums to test their knowledge of topics such as machinery and equipment, electricity, structures and natural resources. Individually, Rex earned a silver placement, and Owen, Jack and Landon earned bronze placements.

“There wasn’t anything that caught us off guard,” said Jack, who serves as the Garden Spot FFA chapter’s treasurer. “Before the competition, we would basically focus on specific areas during our weekly practices.” Garden Spot FFA alumni Bryce Johnson and Mark Mellinger also coached the

students as they practiced, and Johnson attended the convention with the team.

The Agricultural Mechanics and Technology Systems team received guidance from multiple local businesses as the students prepared for the national convention. Team members participated in hands-on

activities offered by businesses such as Weaver Turf Power and Bearing & Drive Systems. Additionally, the students occasionally visited Garden Spot FFA adviser Katie Ranck’s family farm to learn about skid loaders, tractors, combines and other types of agricultural equipment.

“Seeing different opportunities that are available through FFA inspired me to look ahead to what I can do in the future,” Landon said.

Rex, who joined the Garden Spot FFA chapter last year, said the national convention was a unique experience that allowed the team to connect with students from across the country. “Being a new member, it was neat to see how many people could be united out there under one organization,” Rex added.

A photo from LancasterHistory’s archive shows members of the Lancaster Jaycees

Julia Whitfield, a lifelong resident of Lancaster and manager of Mennonite Life’s visitor center, said she has no memory of Spooknacht. According to Whitfield, most members of Lancaster’s Mennonite community rarely celebrate Halloween or trick-or-treat, but instead hold a harvest celebration every fall. Pete Kingsley, one of the former members of the local Jaycees club, said he has no memory of Spooknacht either. After following a trail of old newspaper clippings and bits of information in Willow Street Church’s archive, local historian Eric Schubert discovered that his acquaintance Linda Ross won the Spooknacht Queen contest in 1965.

“It was a big celebration at McCaskey High School that involved all the schools in the county,” said Ross, a Penn Manor High School alumna who now resides in Marietta. “It was accompanied by other activities, but the contest was a huge deal. It was driven by the Jaycees, and that year’s Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Lancaster always attended.”

Ross recalled that each

Lancaster County high school held its own Spooknacht queen contest, during which contestants would display their talents at a school assembly. Students voted on a candidate to send to Spooknacht for the county-wide competition, and contestants in the final pageant showcased a talent and answered questions in front of a panel of judges. Ross said she does not know when or why the annual event officially stopped taking place. The origins of Spooknacht began several decades before Ross won in 1965; Ross’ mother won the title of Spooknacht Queen in the 1940s. “I think women just became less interested in participating in beauty pageants,” Ross speculated. “Some people used it as a stepping stone for other contests. I’m a dancer, so I just entered everything I could.”

Lancaster County may never hold a Spooknacht celebration again, but despite vanishing with almost no trace, the bygone tradition will always hold a place in the area’s long history of unique festivities.
