Nothing Says Christmas Like A Holiday Workshop
Celebrate The Savior’s Birth With A Live Nativity BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Every few years since 2001, members of Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC) have invited the public to attend their live Nativity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, WSMC was unable to host the event last year. The church’s live Nativity will return this month for people of all ages to enjoy. WSMC’s ninth live Nativity will take place at the church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, on Saturday, Dec. 18; Sunday, Dec. 19; and Friday, Dec. 24, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. About 50 church members are involved in the production, and there will be live animals, including a cow, a donkey, sheep, and goats. Attendees will enter the church, go to the gymnasium, receive a ticket with a designated time slot, and then walk through the live Nativity. Before and after the live Nativity, See Live Nativity pg 10 Third-graders customized a Pioneer Pride drawstring backpack using heat transfer paper and constructed their own holiday graham cracker house at the 25th annual holiday workshop.
n Dec. 2, and 3, approximately 220 third-grade students from Hans Herr Elementary School went to the Lampeter-Strasburg High School to participate in the 25th annual holiday workshop, which is coordinated by the high school technology education department. Supervised by teachers and assisted by high school students, the third-graders participated in activities at various stations. They learned how to use an assembly line process and interchangeable parts to produce their own gum ball machine; used soybean materials to

manufacture candles, crayons, or lip balm; constructed their own holiday graham cracker house; designed a cover for use on an activity book; had their picture taken in a photo booth using winter-themed props; customized a Pioneer Pride drawstring backpack using heat transfer paper; and created a video holiday greeting to share with their friends or family. “It was a great experience for the third-graders and the high school students,” stated Todd Garber, holiday workshop coordinator. “This event is made possible by having motivated students and staff, cooperative administrators, generous and active PTO groups, and sup-
portive community businesses.” Through the holiday workshop, third-graders were introduced to the kind of activities they could experience once they attend high school. Alicia Miller, a special education teacher co-teaching with a third-grade classroom teacher, went through the holiday workshop when she was a third-grader, helped extensively as a high-schooler, and now is back leading children as a teacher. “It was a great opportunity for the third-graders to interact with the older students and be creative in their own way,” stated Miller. “As teachers, we look forward to it continuing to allow third-graders to
make this memory every year.” The event was mainly financed by the elementary parent teacher organization (PTO), but was also supported by the high school PTO, Weis Markets, Giant, Keystone Wood Specialties, the high school cafeteria, the high school technology education department, and the school’s FFA chapter. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the third-graders last year were unable to participate in the holiday workshop. However, they will attend the workshop in midDecember. The Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) football team advanced to the District Three 4A final, so it comes as no surprise that the team was well represented in the Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star selections announced at the annual league banquet on Nov. 30 in Mount Gretna. First-year head coach Victor Ridenour led that group, sharing Coach of the Year honors with Garden Spot’s Matt Zamperini. Berkeley Wagner followed, sharing Outstanding Back of the Year recognition with Ephrata’s Andre Weidman. He was also a unanimous choice for Section Three First Team honors at quarterback. Nick DelGrande was named Outstanding Lineman of the Year (TE and LB), as well as First Team OT and ILB. Other First Team All-Stars were

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Locally, there will be four opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons are assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders are asked to register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle. The Count for Kids will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, in collaboration with Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register by calling 717-295-2055 and must be accompanied by an adult. Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will celebrate Yuletide on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 26 and 27. After a 2020 hiatus due to COVID and with an eye to lingering COVID concerns, “Voices of Yuletide Past” will be offered with several new twists. Rather than the crowds of people present during the holiday open houses of past Yuletides, visitors can expect a more intimate experience as they arrive at the mansion on Jan. 6, 1795, Twelfth Night. At the turn of the 18th century, many Lancaster families of English extraction like the Hands and the Yeateses celebrated the Old English traditions of Yuletide, which consisted of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Yuletide started on Dec. 25, which was primarily a day of religious observance of the birth of Christ. In the following days, people held dinners, card parties and balls, culminating on Jan. 6, Twelfth Night, which commemorated the magi’s adoration of the baby Jesus. In contrast to today, Christmas Day was only the beginning of Yuletide, not its primary focus. Gifts, when given at all, tended to be little more than trinkets and tokens. Yuletide was about family, friends and fun rather than the giving and receiving of gifts. During “Voices of Yuletide Past,” as groups of guests are escorted from room to candlelit and hollybedecked room, they will see the sights and hear the sounds of a household about to welcome guests to the first Yuletide Ball to be held in the new mansion. guests will hear the voices of Katherine Hand, Edward Hand, Jasper Yeates, Sarah Yeates, Dorothy Hand, young Jasper and Edward Hand, and a female servant trying to get the younger children ready for bed. This program represents a collaborative effort with both the Theater of the Seventh Sister - whose actors will offer dramatic recorded readings of character scripts written by Rock Ford board member Pamela Stoner and executive director Sam Slaymaker and with Barry Atticks, associate professor of music business technology at Millersville University. Atticks will provide the recording studio for use by the actors, and his students will create and edit the voices and sound effects as well as position the necessary sound equipment in the mansion. The students will receive academic credit for their work on this project. In addition to the mansion tour, guests will be able to join in Christmas carols as they gather around a fire pit outside the mansion and then enjoy the holiday fiddle music of Tom Knapp of the Celtic band Fire in the Glen in the Snyder Gallery lobby. They will then enter the Snyder Gallery to look for clues and information relating to Yuletides past. Children will be invited to participate in activities. Guests, regardless of vaccination status, will be required to wear face coverings while inside the mansion and the gallery, and groups will be limited to 10 people. Tickets may be purchased at www.rockford .yapsody.com; there are separate fees for adults and for youths ages 6 to 17. Admission is free for children age 5 and younger. Timed entry tours of the mansion will be held on the half hour, with the first at 4 p.m. and the last at 7:30 p.m. Reservations are required. Proceeds will benefit educational programs at Historic Rock Ford.
