R
on Hoover of Willow Street moved to Lancaster County in 1998. Hoover was the chairman and CEO of Thermacore Inc., a company that specializes in the design, development and manufacturing of thermal management solutions for a broad range of equipment . Hoover moved to the area for his business, which brought him a great deal of success after a public merger in 2001. After the merger, Hoover faced with a new challenge: Where should he focus his efforts now that his company
didn’t require all his attention? Hoover, a practicing Christian, b e ga n to m e e t w i t h yo u n g entrepreneurs to talk about the role that faith plays in the world of business. While Hoover was at the helm of Thermacore, he actively incorporated his Christian values in his business practices, from employee policies to his interactions with vendors and clients. With his newfound free time, Hoover regularly bought breakfast for local young professionals and discussed the ways they could combine faith and business in the same way he had. In 2004, while Hoover served
as a board member for Lancaster Bible College, he traveled to California to meet Bob Brumleu, a new board member of the Christian nonprofit organization Pocket Testament League. Hoover told Brumleu about his recent efforts to impact young business leaders in the community, and he explained his frustration with not having a structured process to offer the coaching he desired. Br umleu told Hoover about Convene, an organization that comprises Christian business owners from across the country who shared Hoover’s goal of integrating their religious values
in the workplace. Shortly after, Hoover attended his first Convene meeting, and he resolved to bring the ministry back to Lancaster County with him. In 2006, Hoover helped to establish the Lancaster branch of Convene by creating a network of Christian CEOs and business owners who serve as chairmen. As the ministry has grown over the years, Convene now encompasses intrapreneurs and small start-ups. The organization’s member companies employ about 55,000 employees nationwide, and they have a combined revenue of more than $11 billion. See Convene pg 3

On Oct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Country Rock Group of the Year award at the ninth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The Jess Zimmerman Band is led by Jess Heitz, who is accompanied by guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis. This is the second year the outfit has been nominated for awards at the ceremony, which was hosted at the famous American country music venue the Grand Ole Opry. Last year, The Jess Zimmerman Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” This year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, only 10 artists were selected to play at the event. “It was really one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The Jess Zimmerman

V Kelly for Children Trust recently awarded a grant of $15,000 to the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The grant will go toward the Schreiber Center’s behavioral health therapy services, which it launched in 2020. The funding will be utilized to furnish the new behavioral health therapy suite with essential supplies and materials that will allow therapists to create a nurturing and supportive environment for the children under their care. Additionally, the contribution will create budgetary flexibility for the Schreiber Center to hire additional therapists, which amplify the center’s capacity to serve and help to address the needs of children currently waiting to be seen for behavioral health services. For more information, contact Alexandra Cahill at 717-393-0425, ext. 129.

“Convene is about building strong companies that have eternal value,” Hoover said. “If you’re called to be a business leader, that is your platform, and your pastoral function is to make the business productive for the kingdom of God.” The members of Convene promote Christian ethics in a variety of ways, such as encouraging employers to offer a stewardship program that involves their workers. Convene also advises its member companies to have a corporate chaplain to provide support for employees. “We certainly understand getting ideas from their mind and labor from their bodies, but we encourage companies to give workers tools for their spirit as well,” Hoover said. Two years ago, Hoover passed his chairmanship of the Lancaster Convene chapter to Brian Gerhart and Bud Handwerk, but he remains active in the organization as a regional chairman. New Year’s Eve party pointers Many people consider New Year’s Day the unofficial end of the holiday season. That often means that New Year’s Eve is an opportunity to socialize, gather and party one final time before returning to the routines of daily life. The first known instance of New Year’s celebrations can be traced to around 2,000 B.C. in the region of
Mesopotamia. Celebrants gathered in March, rather than January, as this was the time of the vernal equinox, when the darkness of winter subsided and agricultural life could begin anew. A s individuals count down the days until New Year’s Eve festivities, the following planning tips may make the celebrations
occasions to remember. Party planners may consider giving their event a theme. Guests can come dressed as dynamic duos like Mario and Luigi, or the party can evoke a bygone era, such as the Roaring ‘20s. Let guests know what they can do to play the part. Decorations should be tied into the theme as well. Classic New Year ’s Eve

decorations include balloons, streamers and confetti. Hosts may consider a festive balloon arch or backdrop that also can serve as a place to pose for photo opportunities. In order to avoid guests becoming wiped out by the time midnight arrives, start the party at around 9 or 10 p.m. and anticipate its lasting into the wee hours of the morning. Hosts may also tailor d r i n k s to t h e s e a s o n . They may utilize seasonal ingredients when crafting drinks or serve drinks that are expected at this time of year, such as eggnog that includes alcohol or cranberry Moscow mules. To keep guests having fun at the party, provide various activities. Festivities may include card games or board games, karaoke or
a trivia contest. B evera ges should be accessible. Unless the host is hiring a bartender who will be on call to pour drinks, having drinks ready to go is a smart idea. In addition to cans or bottles of beer or malt beverages, have ready-to-go mixed drinks available by selecting a signature drink and preparing a bulk batch. Foods should also be provided in a self-serve f a s h i o n . F i n g e r fo o d s and bite-sized morsels may not require guests to carry plates, reducing the chances for spillage. Sliders, miniature quiches and dessert shooters may be suitable. Hosts should also try to curate a winning playlist. They may ask guests to submit a list of their favorite tunes to help compile
a collection of songs that will ebb and flow with the evening’s events. Hosts should include tunes suited to singing along like “Don’t Stop Believin’” or “Tiny Dancer.” Those planning parties may choose to offer takeaway gifts for designated drivers. Encourage guests to stay sober and volunteer for designated driving duties by offering prizes. Ideas include gift cards to coffee shops or restaurants. Hosts should also be ready for midnight. They should provide a large television to show the midnight countdown and start pouring champagne roughly 20 minutes before midnight to ensure all glasses are full when the clock strikes 12. New Year’s Eve celebrations get an extra boost when the party is well-planned.

Mennonite Life will partner with the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies to host a lecture about gender and media in two conservative communities on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in the chapel at Brethren Village, 3009 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Amish and ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities are associated with religious obser vance and a renunciation of worldly things. Investigation of women’s relationship to media in these communities, however, reveals a more nuanced picture of the boundaries at play and women’s roles in negotiating them. In this talk,
Rivka Neriya-Ben Shahar will draw on extensive interviews with women in both traditions to compare how they do or do not use contemporary media technology. Neriya-Ben Shahar is a senior lecturer at Sapir Academic College in Sderot, Israel, where she teaches communications, religion, and gender. She received her doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has been a Fulbright postdoctoral fellow. Her book, “Strictly Observant: Amish and Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Women Negotiating Media,” is forthcoming. T his event is free of charge and requires no registration.

Each life story deserves to be told...
Football season heats up each January, when fans of both college football and the professional game look forward to each sport’s respective playoffs. Many people hold game watch parties, which not only provide an opportunity to view the big game, but also offer social time and food. The following recipe for “Grilled Buffalo Wings,” courtesy of cookbook author Katie Lee Biegel and The Food Network, may fit nicely in the game day spread. Grilled Buffalo Wings Yields 6 to 8 servings Ingredients: 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 3 pounds whole chicken wings 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/3 cup hot sauce 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon honey Instructions: 1. In a small bowl, combine
the salt, pepper and garlic powder. In a large bowl, toss the wings with the salt mixture to evenly coat. 2. Preheat a gas grill to medium heat, about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Place the wings on the grill, crowding them together so they are all touching. This method goes against the conventional wisdom of giving meat room so it does not steam. In this recipe, the meat should steam so it stays moist. Grill, flipping the wings every 5 minutes, for a total of 20 minutes of cooking. 4. In the meantime, heat the butter, hot sauce, vinegar, and honey in a saucepan over low heat and whisk to combine. 5. In a clean, large bowl, toss the wings with the sauce. Turn the heat up on the grill to medium-high. Use tongs to remove the wings from the sauce and put them back on the grill until the skins crisp, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Put the wings back in the bowl with the sauce, toss and serve.
