Flowers add beauty and fragrance to your yard. If you’re a novice gardener, you might be overwhelmed by the many things that need to be considered before planting. Knowing the basics can help. Site location, design, plant selection, and garden care are important factors in creating your own backyard (or front yard) haven. Location, Location, Location Plan a site for your new flower garden before you purchase the plants. Most types of plants thrive in an area that receives at least six hours of sunlight a day. If you are working with only shady areas, you will need to specifically seek out shade-loving plants. Be sure to choose an area where there is proper drainage. Try to select an area with good soil; however, if your yard doesn’t have the best types, then you can enhance it with compost or fertilizer. Avoid shallow, rocky soil. Also consider the size of the space. If you want many different plants, plan for a larger garden, as plants that are crowded will compete for nutrients and may not thrive. The Art of Design Designing a garden can maximize the beauty of the space but can also prove to be functional by making it easier to maintain. Most gardens fall into two categories: the border and the bed. A border garden can be built along a fence, around a tree (shade-loving plants may be needed in this case), or along the house and is most often best viewed from the front. Flower beds look beautiful from any viewpoint. Although there are no strict rules about color, some schemes may work better than others. Using different shades of the same color or different complementing colors is recommended. Grouping flowers, either by color or by plant, along with the repetition of colors and plants, are good ways to achieve a good garden aesthetic. Groups of three or more work best, and symmetry is an easy way for the beginner gardener to achieve balance. It is important to consider the plants’ full size when figuring for spacing. Also, plan on placing taller plants in the back, medium-sized plants in the middle, and shorter plants in the front of a border. In an island flower bed, taller plants should be placed in the center, with shorter plants around the edges of the bed. So Many Flowers, So Little Time When selecting plants for your garden, there are a number of factors to consider. First, choose plants that will

thrive in your climate. This may require a little research; however, if you do not want to think too much on the subject, native plants are always a good choice. You also want to bear in mind when the plants bloom. You can arrange your garden to have color through several seasons. A good mix of annuals (plants that usually germinate, flower, and die in one year) and perennials (plants that live for two or more years) can help achieve this. You can purchase your plants at your neighborhood nursery, through the mail, or through plant exchanges. Even if you’re tempted to pick the beautiful flowering plants, choose ones that are in bud or forming buds to ensure a longer bloom for your own garden. Nature Versus Nurture Once you’ve created your masterpiece, it’s time to maintain it. Regular watering is, of course, one of the most important steps. The amount of water depends somewhat on the types of plants; however, a standard is about one inch of water a week. This can occur through natural rainfall, but in the summertime you will most likely need to supplement the watering. You should give your garden a deep soaking in the early morning or late afternoon. Plants need more water during extreme heat; however, be careful not to water during the hottest time of the day because you can boil your plants. It’s also important to allow your garden to dry between waterings to avoid disease or overwatering. Adding compost or fertilizer to your garden can help replenish nutrients and extend blooming. The best time to fertilize is after a good rain or watering. It is imperative to weed your garden regularly as well. When tilling the soil for your garden, remove any weeds that you see to help cut down on the amount that will eventually sprout up. Herbicides can be used to get rid of some types of weeds. When it comes to pests and insects, both store-bought and natural remedies are available. Pesticides are readily available at nurseries, but they may contain chemicals harmful to pets and children, so be careful to read the labels. Some herbs, like mint and lavender, are natural pest deterrents and can be planted strategically for a safer solution. Koi Pond

Much like a pool or indoor aquarium, koi ponds require some work. In fact, koi are quite sensitive fish that require a carefully maintained environment for optimal health. Koi are colorful fish that go by the name nishikigoi in Japanese. They are a specially bred form of carp, not oversized goldfish, enjoyed for their vivid coloring. In the 19th century, Japanese farmers began breeding decorative carp, selecting brightly colored specimens to ornament gardens in luxurious fish pools. The Japanese consider koi good luck. There are certain varieties that are preferred over others. Kohaku -- the favorite -- are white-skinned koi with a red upper pattern. Tancho are white koi with a red dot on their head. Koi are cool-water fish that prefer a deep pond. In the warmer weather they will swim to the bottom of the pond to avoid the heat. When planning on a koi pond, keep in mind that you may also want to plan your pond in an area that is shaded from direct sun to moderate the water temperature even more. Think about installing a koi pond as you would a home aquarium, complete with filtration system. This will help you maintain a clean environment for the fish. Routine skimming of the water surface can catch debris that falls into the water and contaminates the delicate ecosystem of the pond. Koi should be protected overhead from predators. Therefore, koi ponds generally feature lush foliage for their protection. Rocks or overhangs under which koi can hide are features you should include. An algaecide is also a necessity to prevent the overgrowth of algae in the pond. Consider special water additives sold at pet stores that can enhance the water environment for your koi. Because koi generally like to swim unseen, their type of food is a floating pellet, which encourages the fish to come to the surface. This way you can assess whether the fish look healthy. Koi can even be trained to recognize humans and take food from your hand. Start small with your koi pond. One or two fish is adequate. Experts recommend one small- or medium-sized koi per 500 gallons of water. If you have too many fish, their waste can contaminate the water if not properly filtered.

Successfully Plant Your Property Around

Spring is a season for rebirth, and for homeowners that often means bringing their property back to life. Once the winter weather h a s subsided, it is time to head outside and take inventory of the landscape and see how the yard, trees, bushes, and shrubs fared throughout the colder temperatures. One of the best and most eco-friendly ways to bring your yard back to life is to plant around the property. Planting can be a soothing and enjoyable way to spend some time outdoors in the spring air, and it is not as difficult as it may seem. When planting around the home this spring, consider the following pointers. * Be aware of depth when planting. It is common for those who are not used to gardening to plant too deeply. The idea of planting deeply seems to be correct, as homeowners want to be certain their plants or trees will take root and it seems like common sense that the deeper the plant is planted, the more likely it is to take root. However, planting depth should mirror the depth the plant was grown in at the nursery. When purchasing a plant at the nursery, ask for the planting depth and be sure not to go any deeper than that when planting the plant on your property. * Stake new trees if necessary. While it is great to imagine spring as a season of warm sun and extended daylight, in reality, most regions still get some wind and cold throughout spring. This can make planting trees a difficult proposition, as new trees might rock back and forth and struggle to establish new roots. To mitigate any strong winds, stake new

trees when planting around the property. Not all new trees need to be staked, but for the ones that do, the stakes will act as a stabilizing force during strong winds, enabling the t r e e to establish healthy roots for years to come. * Consider container-grown plants. Novice green-thumbers might find it best to go with container-grown plants. Containergrown plants are easy to plant around the property, and it is also easy to change the look of the property by simply moving the plants around. Also, as the seasons change, it is easy to reposition the plants so they are still getting the sun exposure they need to thrive. * Get a second opinion. Planting trees around the property can be akin to hanging a painting on the wall. It is always best to get a second opinion to make sure the painting is straight, and the same goes with planting trees. Before backfilling the hole, ask someone to look at the tree from several angles to ensure that it is straight. Once the planting hole has been backfilled, it is awfully difficult to reposition the tree. * Give the trees or plants their best chance to grow. It is important to survey the property ahead of planting to be certain the plants will be in the best place to thrive. Call the utility company and ask if there are any buried utility lines you will want to avoid. Also, a tree’s roots spread far beyond its branches, so be sure to plant the tree in a location that allows for that root growth without jeopardizing the property (i.e., roots spreading beneath the home’s foundation).

Gardening is often seen as an art form to men and women with a green thumb. Once the landscape is designed, homeowners may not want to change much from year to year. That is where perennial plants can be an advantage. Designing a landscape and keeping the garden looking beautiful can take a keen eye. It also may require a lot of time and commitment. If home gardeners have to replant items year after year, gardening can become time-consuming and expensive. Turning to perennial plants and flowers to serve as the anchor for a home garden can make the process easier. Perennials are plants that live indefinitely. In terms of flowering plants, perennials will bloom every year. In essence, they have the staying power of shrubbery but are more delicate in nature and often appealing to the eye. There are perennials for every season, soil type and sun exposure. Perennials come in a wide variety of blooming flowers or attractive foliage. Chances are if a homeowner wants to add perennials to the garden, there is a variety available that will fit his or her needs. Once perennials are in place, there is relatively minimal maintenance that is required. The tune-ups that may be needed are some deadheading to promote new and stronger growth and some cleaning up after winter before the new blooming season takes place. Once the early spring season arrives and the ground is not too muddy or rainsoaked, clear out any leaves and debris that have gathered in the areas where perennials are located. Gardeners can also till the mulch or soil in these areas to aerate the planting beds. Using shears, cut down any dead grasses, stems and stalks from spent perennials that overwintered. Remove any dead wood and broken branches. Be careful not to trim spring-blooming shrubs because some flowers bloom on year-old stems and this can cause the plant not to flower. Perennials that aren’t flowering as well as they used to or have dead centers may need to be divided to promote stronger growth. This should be done in early spring before the plant blooms or in late fall before the winter arrives. Dividing plants and replanting not only grows the garden, but also is a healthy revitalization for the plant. Gardeners who prefer to take a laid-back approach to gardening may appreciate the ease with which a beautiful and easy-to-maintain landscape can be created with perennials.

Their pink or white buds are often a spectacle, so much so that towns and cities hold cherry blossom festivals. * Columbine: These beautiful blooms attract butterflies and can be a nice part of a garden bed. * Jacob’s ladder: Variegated foliage that is dappled with violet-colored flowers can add a sweet smell and visual interest to the garden.

HOW TO CARE FOR

Annuals are a delightful burst of color for your garden. Here’s how to tend to these plants after you’ve planted them. Mulch most annuals. Use a mulch such as grass clippings, wood chips or pine needles. Mulch suppresses weeds, conserves moisture, and prevents some soil-borne diseases. Apply a layer 1 to 2 inches thick. Keep annuals appropriately watered. Refer to the label. Most annuals are fairly thirsty - they’ll need about 1 inch of water per week. It’s better to occasionally water them deeply and well rather than giving them just a little water here and there. Nearly all annuals do best if their spent blooms are trimmed or pinched off every few days. This not only keeps the plant looking tidy, it also encourages the plant to produce more flowers. Pull out annuals when they’re spent. For cool-season annuals, this usually means that hot or very cold weather has hit. For warm-season annuals, this usually means a heavy frost has blackened their leaves. Dispose of healthy annuals in a compost heap. If disease has been a problem, put them in the garbage.
