Twin Valley Middle School To Present Musical BY FRANCINE FULTON
or the first time in more than 10 years, a musical will be performed at Twin Valley Middle School (TVMS). Thanks to a grant provided by the Twin Valley Community Education Foundation (TVCEF), “Wonderland!” will be staged in the TVMS auditorium, 770 Clymer Hill Road, Elverson, on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 and 7 p.m. Based on Lewis Carroll’s novel
F
“Through the Looking-Glass,” the show at TVMS is specifically designed for young actors ages 11 to 17. “The script is quick and funny and includes many of the classic Wonderland characters that the students are already familiar with,” stated director Sarah Weaver. “Plus, the show is quite family-friendly; we are hoping to see a lot of families and middleschoolers in the audience supporting their children and peers.” She noted that some students
were already familiar with “Alice in Wonderland” through either the book or the Disney movie. “(They) have enjoyed seeing familiar characters and discovering niche moments in the script that were touched upon in the original storyline,” said Weaver. “The opening ensemble number, ‘Jabberwocky,’ is based heavily on the famous poem of the same name, and the cast was instantly hooked by twisting the familiar iambic pentameter into a rap beat.”

Working with a Lions Club in Hopkinsville, Ky., the Christiana club was able to put together a list of needed items, such as flashlights, batteries and work gloves, which the community was invited to donate. Additionally, nonperishable food was collected by Lions Club members at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap. Lowe’s contributed to the effort by donating supplies and offering a discount on items purchased at the store by the Lions Club. All of the donations were sorted and placed in boxes by volunteers at the Christiana Lions Club building. The boxes were then loaded onto trailers and brought to Morgantown, where Lowe’s employees put the donations on pallets and wrapped them in plastic. Forklift operators from Lowe’s, including store manager Dawn Madara, then loaded the boxes onto the 53-foot tractor-trailer, which was “wrapped” with the Pennsylvania Lions Club logo and the statement “Pennsylvania Lions - Serving Our Communities Since 1923.” In addition to Lions from Christiana, other volunteers on hand were members of the Parkesburg Lions Club and the Ephrata Lions Club. “There were skids of generators,
The Ephrata Area Churches’ annual sportsmen’s banquet was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year, the group, which includes about a dozen Ephrata- and Akron-area churches, is planning to hold the event. The speaker will be Tracy Breen, a fulltime outdoor writer, speaker, and marketing consultant. He will speak on the topic of “Outwitting a Big Game Animal’s Senses.” The family-friendly banquet will be held on Friday, March 11, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. so attendees can view vendor and other displays. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. A number of door prizes will be given out at the event as well. Breen is from Muskegon, Mich., where he was raised by a family that included a number of hunters and trappers, who introduced him to their love of outdoor adventures when he was quite young. His father made a living trapping into the late 1970s, when he turned to taxidermy. His father’s influence led Breen to choose a career in the great outdoors. Raised in a Christian home, Breen sought to connect his faith with his See Breen pg 3

kerosene heaters, rakes and shovels and heavy-duty tarps - all kinds of items other than just boxes of food,” explained Christiana Lions Club member Ed Baylor, assistant Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator. He noted that the volunteers and employees all worked together on a morning when the temperature was only 17 degrees. After Morgantown, the truck made a stop at the Lions Club state office in Harrisburg. A second tractor-trailer was needed to collect additional supplies in Cranberry Township near Pittsburgh before both vehicles headed to Kentucky. In addition to collecting food,
supplies and monetary donations, Lions Club members from throughout Pennsylvania are currently working in Kentucky to help with relief efforts. “It’s amazing how the Pennsylvania Lions stepped up to the plate and got supplies and donations,” Baylor said. “Jim Groff, (Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator), who was in Joplin after the tornado, said this (collection effort) is the biggest he has ever seen.” For more information and to view additional photos of the donations, as well as Pennsylvania Lions working in Kentucky, visit www.face book.com/ChristianaLionsClub.

For many cast members, this is their first musical production. “Seeing dialogue, staging, costuming, props, lighting, audio, vocals, choreography and blocking combine into this spectacle has been extremely challenging for some, who are seeing the ‘plane’ around them being built as they are flying it,” Weaver commented. “The older students have really stepped up and helped lead the younger cast members through the chaos of it all. As an educator, it has been such an incredibly rewarding experience for me to see friendships and

Testimonies from 2021 Sportsman Dinner Attendees
CVIM currently serves approximately 25 patients per week in its physical therapy program, which is supported by a staff of dedicated volunteers, including two physical therapists, two physiatrists, an athletic trainer, and a hand therapist, as well as additional volunteer professionals offering chiropractic care and acupuncture therapy. CVIM’s physiatrists and physical therapy team aim to empower patients through education, rehabilitation, and prevention, as well as nonopioid medications, injections, modalities, and therapeutic exercises. The organization also now has a dedicated space for its own electromyography (EMG) machine, a diagnostic tool that is used to assess nerve and muscle function and that can be particularly helpful for patients dealing with hand or wrist injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. A majority of patients served at CVIM work physically demanding jobs in manual labor and the service industry. That means many CVIM clients are susceptible to injuries and may live in chronic pain, but they may struggle to access or afford physical therapy due to prohibitive out-of-pocket costs. We wanted to take good care of the volunteers because we appreciate our volunteers and what they do for us.” Parkesburg Baptist Church is a mission-focused congregation.
