e are very eclectic,” said Joe Hillman of The Joe Hillman Band when describing the type of music that audiences will hear as the band performs as part of the Honey Brook Borough Concerts in the Park Series. “They will hear a lot of different covers, some traditional bluegrassy kind of music, some John Hartford music, Grateful Deadstyle music and some Bob Marley.” The Joe Hillman Band will perform in Honey Brook for the first time on Sunday, July 10, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry. The bluegrass band consists of Hillman, who is the lead singer and plays the mandolin; guitarist and fiddler Jordan Rast; and Charlie Muench, who plays the upright bass and banjo. Rast and Muench also provide vocals.

“(People) will hear a lot of different covers, some traditional bluegrassy kind of music, some John Hartford music, Grateful Dead-style music and some Bob Marley.” Rast was originally trained in Suzuki violin but chose songwriting and playing the fiddle over classical music. “Jordan comes from a musical family,” noted Hillman. “His father is a professional and regional touring banjo player. Jordan has been playing since he was a wee child.”

Muench started playing the upright bass in his elementary school orchestra at the age of 9. He studied music education at West Chester University, graduating in 2011. Muench is also a founding member of The Stray Birds. The three-piece band plays acoustically using only stringed instruments. “If you were to break down a bluegrass band into its essential form, there is the melody and the dance beat,” Hillman explained. “The relationship between the bass and the mandolin covers what the drums would be doing. It’s the fundamental three instruments of a bluegrass band. The father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe, was a mandolin player.” Hillman said that he and the other musicians are familiar with the challenges of playing outdoors. “Through (the pandemic) we performed mainly outdoors,” he pointed out. “We played in the wintertime to people when it was 30 degrees outside because people wanted to hear music and they felt safe outside.”

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located in the village of Gibraltar, will hold its 12th annual car show on Saturday, July 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine. In addition to the display of vehicles, which will feature all makes, models and years of cars and trucks, other family-friendly activities will be offered.

Summer camp, open to children entering kindergarten through sixth grade, will be held from Monday, July 11, to Thursday, July 21, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp will take place at the community center on Mondays and Wednesdays and at Hibernia Park, 1 Park Road, Coatesville, on Thursdays. Not only does the camp offer summer fun, but it is designed as a way for children to expand their educational and social skills. “We are focusing on the social and emotional issues this year,” said Dawn Marie Schell, community center founder and CEO. “Because of COVID, some of the kids are having communication issues. They are used to being on the computer or not talking at all. They are not communicating the way they used to. We don’t have electronic (devices) at camp.”

If so, paying a little extra toward the principal each month will help to pay off the mortgage a good deal earlier than paying the same amount you’ve been paying for years. Although paying extra money each month may not seem like reducing one’s financial load, it will do so considerably over time. For example, the financial experts at Wells Fargo note that individuals with a fixed-rate mortage loan of $200,000 at 4% can cut the term of that loan by more than four and a half years by paying as little as $100 extra each month toward their principal. Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee upon arrival, and spectators will be admitted free of charge. Between 150 and 200 vehicles are expected to be on display at the event. “We had 204 cars last year,” said Carol Kincaid, car show committee chair and vice president of the church council. “If it’s a beautiful day, that helps with (attendance). It’s not all old (cars). It’s a nice mixture.” Gift bags and dash plaques will be given to the first 100 vehicles. Trophies will be given out in nine categories, including Best of Show; Fan Favorite, which is voted on by the spectators; Best Import; and Best Car from the 1940s to the 1950s, the 1950s to the 1960s and so on. “(Car owners) get a door prize Kinzers

ticket when they enter, and we have drawings during the course of the day for small door prizes,” Kincaid noted. “At the end, when we have all those tickets, our pastor pulls a ticket (randomly) and that person wins a cash grand prize and a trophy.” The winner must be present to claim the prize. A Chinese auction will be offered. Prizes, which have been donated by local businesses, will include gift cards, a snack basket and a hair products basket. Food offered for sale will include homemade baked goods and breakfast sandwiches. A DJ will provide music, and vendors will be on hand for shopping. “Currently, we have a craft vendor, a person who does caricatures of the cars and we have a gentleman that does animal balloons for the kids,” noted Kincaid. “(New this year) we are also having Red, the mascot from Red Robin, to

entertain the kids.” Children will also be able to enjoy crafts at a vacation Bible school (VBS) table. “We had about 30 kids (take part) last year,” said Kincaid, noting that the VBS activity will be offered throughout the event. Another attraction will be a Belgian sheepdog show. A percentage of the proceeds from the car show will benefit Hope Rescue Mission, a charity that benefits homeless men in Berks County. “They not only help veterans; they help other men and the disabled (by) providing food and

shelter for them,” said Kincaid. More information about the organization is available at www.hopeforreading.org. St. John’s is located at 1035 Old River Road, Birdsboro. For more information, email stjohns gibraltar@windstream.net or call the church office at 610-5823655. More information is also available at www.stjohnsgibraltar.org or by searching for “St John’s Lutheran Church Birdsboro” on Facebook. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available during the show.

Cars and trucks of a variety of makes, models and years will be on display.

Summer Camp from pg 1 The camp is led by adult counselors as well as teenagers from the community, including lifeguards who provide the campers with swimming lessons. “Most of our counselors and our lifeguards are children who were once campers,” Schell noted. “Hearts In Hands sponsors the lifeguards. We pay for their certification and RHG Management gives them a summer job.” A former teacher, Schell founded the Hearts In Hands Community Center about six years ago as a way to provide educational, physical and spiritual support programs for those in need, including the people living in modular home communities situated in the Honey Brook, Downingtown and Coatesville triangle primarily located along the Route 322 corridor. However, activities, especially summer camp, are open to the community. “We want kids from anywhere to come and join. Our goal is to build stronger community connections,” Schell stated. “This is an opportunity for them to make new friendships.” Hearts In Hands offers a variety of programs, such as Lego Club and a Pee-Wee Princess Club for 3-yearolds through kindergartners. It also provides information to residents about community resources, such as area food banks. A food pantry box is located outside the community center where people can pick up free, nonperishable food items. “We offer teen programs and programs for adults and children throughout the whole year,” said Schell. “We partner with 4-H for some programs. (The programs) are open to anybody.” The community center, which offered limited programming during the pandemic, received an upgrade, and a grand opening event was held in March. “We (installed) a new floor, painted and freshened it up some and got new tables and chairs,” Schell noted. “We wanted everyone to know that we are back and opening up our programs again.” For more information about summer camp and other programming offered at the center or to register for camp, visit www .heartsinhands.net or call the Hearts In Hands office at 610942-4039.

Golf Tournament To Benefit Animal House Project BY FRANCINE FULTON

More than 130 golfers took part in last year’s golf tournament to benefit Animal House Project.

For more information and to register for the golf tournament, visit www.AHPCharityGolfTournament.org. Animal House Project dba Chester County Pet Food Pantry began in June of 2001 as the 2 Moon Junction Animal House Project, a no-kill animal rescue group in East Fallowfield Township. After realizing that most of the animals were being surrendered because families could not afford to feed or provide basic veterinary care for them, the Chester County Pet Food Pantry was formed in 2004. Each year, the organization helps people feed and care for their companion pets in order to keep them out of shelters and rescues. In addition, the organization provides spaying, neutering and low-cost vaccination of pantry clients’ pets. The pantry serves clients in Chester, Berks and Montgomery counties. “Between the time I took over in June 2013 to Dec. 31, 2021, we gave

out 3.5 million pounds of pet food. It went to companion pets and rescue pets,” said Yannessa, adding, “And we are an all-volunteer group.” Pet food distributions take place on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in a drivethrough format at the pantry’s new location, 72 Robinson St., Pottstown, located ★ off Route 100 near Motel 6. “We have a 7,500-square-foot building, which has a loading dock and a drive-in door, which makes it easier,” said Yannessa, noting that pantry clients were advised of the

move in advance. “We sent out letters and postcards. We knew in September that we would be moving. January was our first pantry distribution (at the new location).” Yannessa noted that the pantry is always in need of financial donations, pet food donations and volunteers willing to work at events and on distribution days. The fourth annual charity golf tournament to benefit Animal House Project (AHP) will be held on Friday, July 22, at the Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook. Proceeds will benefit AHP, whose mission is to keep companion pets at home by providing donated pet food and pet care services. The charity golf outing will open with registration and a continental breakfast at 8 a.m. Tee-off with a shotgun start will begin at 9 a.m. The registration fee includes range balls, green fees, the use of a cart, a swag bag, free beer and a lunch buffet in the course pavilion. Also included will be a skee ball contest and a 50/50 drawing. There will also be prizes for the golfers, including a $25,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one. Groups of four and individuals are invited to register to play golf. Nongolfers are also welcome to attend to enter the prize drawings. “They can attend and buy chances. We will have about 50 baskets,” noted MaryBeth Yannessa, AHP board president and golf committee volunteer. Baskets will include donated items such as a George Foreman stand-up grill, two complimentary tickets to Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom and a basket from Victory Brewing Company. Local golf courses, including Kimberton Golf Club, Brookside Country Club and Penn Oaks Golf Club, have all donated golf passes for a group of four.
