Birdsboro Farmers Market offers fresh produce, baked goods and more

TheBirdsboro Farmers Market is now open for its third season, with new vendors and activities planned throughout the summer. The outdoor market, presented by the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department, is typically open every other Saturday at Main Bird Park, located at 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro. The next scheduled event will be on July 15 and the final markets of the year will be on Oct. 7 and 14.

The market takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the exception of July 29, when the market will be open from 4 to 8 p.m., followed by a free movie screening in the park.

Band to present “Rock and Soul Revival”

“We will perform everything from America to Led Zeppelin,” said George Pena, a member of the band Sling Shot, when describing the group’s new show “Rock and Soul Revival,” which will be featured as part of the Honey Brook Borough Concerts in the Park series. The performance will take place on Sunday, July 16,

from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook.

In addition to Pena, lead singer and guitarist, Sling Shot includes Greg Treadwell on bass guitar, drummer Marcello Alvsi and Joe Wasko on keyboard and vocals. The current band members, who all hail from Chester County, have been playing together for the past six

A community yard sale will be held at the park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

“We wanted to test out an evening market,” said board president Christen Thompson. “We’re going to play the movie ‘Free Guy’ afterwards in the park. It’s a good family movie (starring) Ryan Reynolds. We have a big inflatable screen. We’ve done movies over at Texas ballfield before, but we are going to do that (in the park) this time. This is a newer movie, so we hope it brings people out.”

For the community yard sale, a fee will be charged per space in the park. Those who are having yard sales at their homes may be included in a

map for a fee. To register or for more details, search for “Birdsboro Parks and Recreation” on Facebook and choose “Events.”

“Christmas in July” will be the theme of the market on July 15. “We will have Santa Claus come; he will be in the gazebo. The vendors will be doing Christmas sales,” Thompson said, noting one vendor will sell ornaments.

Baby Goat Yoga will be featured at the Aug. 12 market from 10 to 11 a.m. Tickets will be required.

Those who shop at the market will find a variety of plants, flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, canned and pickled goods, baked items, honey, tea, pet products, jewelry,

St. Mark’s dedicates Community Care Center

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, led by pastor Jim Farnsworth, has a mission to serve the community. The church offers a group for senior citizens, a community garden and a food pantry, among other ministries. The church’s latest project is the installation of a shower and laundry facility that can be utilized by the local homeless population and others in need.

St. Mark’s Community Care Center Shower and Laundry was dedicated

on June 28. The facility, located downstairs in the church fellowship hall, was once a boys’ restroom, but it now houses a shower, as well as a washer and dryer complete with laundry soap and a scrubbing sink. Farnsworth said that the facility will serve Birdsboro’s homeless population and others who may have water issues or nonworking appliances. “We don’t have a big homeless population, but we do have some unhoused individuals … so there is a population,” he told those who gathered for the dedication.

“St. Mark’s has been serving this

years, although the band has been in existence for 12 years.

“Rock and Soul Revival,” which the band will perform throughout the summer, includes classic rock, the rhythm and blues sounds of the1960s and music from the 1980s. Audiences can expect to hear songs by Hall & Oates, the Beatles, the Allman Brothers Band, Marvin Gaye and Chicago. There is even an instrumental version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

“We play a lot of music that is common to people when they hear it. In our set list we do ‘Beginnings’ by Chicago and ‘Sara Smile’ by Hall & Oates - stuff you don’t hear many bands try to do,” said Pena. “We are not a typical classic rock band. Our main strength is the material we play. It’s not about the light show or (fireworks) going off. We give a good product, and the material fits just about everybody.”

Pena said that band members enjoy playing outdoor concerts.

Program to teach sewing, quilting

“It’s always fun to do outdoor venues because there is a broad section of people (and) they are there to see the entertainment,” he said, noting that audience members are welcome to get up and dance to the music. “We’re not a dance band, but we play music that people want to dance to.”

For more information about Sling Shot, to hear samples of the band’s music and to learn about upcoming performances, visit www.facebook.com/SSBPA2021.

The final concert in the series will be on Sunday, Aug. 6, at 5:30 p.m., when the John Grecia Band and Drew Nielands will be featured. All concerts are free. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to cancel will be made by 1 p.m. the day of the show. A cancellation message will be posted at www.honeybrookborough.net.

population through our food pantry program, and we got to know all of them. One of the biggest concerns I hear from the homeless individuals is that they don’t have any place to shower or to wash their clothes.”

Farnsworth recalled meeting a homeless couple last summer that had gone without a shower for several weeks. “(Following the interaction), we had a meeting with the borough, and I then came to our church council to tell them that we needed to do something,” he said.

Farnsworth said that a shower and freshly washed clothes will provide some comfort to these individuals.

“This is a part of our community that is suffering, so we need to try to help them out with by simply allowing them to get a shower once in a while to feel refreshed and feel good about themselves and to have some form of dignity back in their lives,” he said. “If

you ever go to the laundromat, it can (cost) between $8 and $10 to do a few loads of laundry.”

Also on hand for the dedication ceremony was Jack Williams, the executive director of Berks Coalition to End Homelessness, who expressed his appreciation to the church for opening the center. “We’re so appreciative that you as a church community provided something that is very much needed,” he stated.

Farnsworth then cut the ribbon to open the center and offered a dedication prayer. He also thanked those who contributed to the project, including the Berks County American Rescue Plan and pastor Gesner Noel and his congregation at Eglise Baptiste Nouvelle Naissance in Birdsboro.

The center will be open by

appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. so that a staff member can be on hand when the facility is in use. Walk-ins will not be permitted. Individuals may stop by or call the church office to reserve a time slot at 610-582-8167.
