hen visitors arrived at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site on July 4, they were invited to sign a mock Declaration of Independence with an authentic quill pen, marking the beginning of activities being held to celebrate Independence Day and the 245th anniversary of the signing of the historic document. A ceremony featuring patriotic music and readings has been held at the site for the past 10 years, although it took place virtually in 2020. Jeff Jones, site manager, welcomed those in attendance to

celebrate not only the holiday, but also the return of the in-person event. The program, which was held on the front porch of the Ironmaster’s Mansion, was presented by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace. Presenters included past park superintendent Edie Shean-Hammond, who is now a member of the Friends; Friends member Christine Emmert, author of “From Out the Fiery Furnace,” a one-act play featuring the stories of life in the 19th century at Hopewell; singer Isabelle Stetka; and Stetka’s grandmother, Francine Black, who provided keyboard accompaniment. Black is also artistic director of the Berks Opera Workshop.

The gleaning garden at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore, which provides fresh produce for clients of the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), was recently dedicated to retired state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who founded the Chester County Gleaning Program in 1996. Gleaning is based on the biblical concept that the farmer should give some of the crops in his fields to those in need. The book of Leviticus states, “When you reap the harvest

VEP Holds Evening Of Inspiration

MORGANTOWN - HONEY BROOK

BY FRANCINE FULTON

A virtual Evening of Inspiration was held recently to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Volunteer English Program (VEP), which provides free one-to-one tutoring for adults looking to improve their English language skills and their understanding of American culture. A highlight of the program, which was hosted by VEP advisory committee member Leon Spencer, was a performance of “Perseus” by the West Chester Area School District Senior Strings, conducted by Katrina Kelly. The program included an address by Rep. Carolyn Comitta. “I want to recognize the Volunteer English Program on its 35th anniversary and I want to thank each of you for your time, energy and resources to support this important initiative all these years,” she stated. “Since 1986, VEP has grown and evolved to change the lives of thousands of immigrants and newcomers on the path to learn English in pursuit of the American dream.” “VEP does more than teach the

It enabled us to (stay) open during the pandemic,” Potrako said. “Not only was he a financial support for us, but Bob was also always out in the community recommending (the VEP). He would make referrals and brought adult students to us.” The program concluded with a live conversation from Los Angeles with author Helena Ku Rhee, who read from her book, “The Paper Kingdom.” Following a questionand-answer session, she stated, “I am amazed by this organization and everything that you have achieved.” The evening was also a fundraiser

for VEP. Attendees paid a registration fee to attend the virtual ceremony, and money was also raised through a 35-day challenge held from May 15 to June 18. “You could participate by donating $35 and doing something for someone else or to support yourself, like walking, writing to friend or reading a chapter a day,” Potrako said. “All those monies raised led up to the Evening of Inspiration, which is our traditional spring fundraiser.” For more information about VEP, including how to volunteer as a tutor, visit www.volunteerenglish.org or www.facebook.com/VolunteerEng or call 610-918-8222.

Those who utilize solar energy at their home or business are invited to become part of the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. This year’s tour will be virtual, and those who visit the tour website will be able to learn about solar energy and its various uses. Chester County’s event will be part of the 26th annual National Solar Tour, presented by the American Solar Energy Society, which showcases solar-powered homes and buildings across the nation. “We are inviting businesses large and small, schools and houses of worship to showcase what we can do in our own community to harness free energy from the sun to generate electricity, warm and cool our buildings, heat water and (reduce) monthly utility bills,” said Nora Ziegler, a retired public school teacher and a Chester County resident who is coordinating the Chester County portion of the Clean Energy Tour. She noted that the tour was held in person in 2019, but that it moved to a virtual format in 2020 because of the pandemic. Organizers decided to make this year’s tour virtual as well. “2020 was the first time that the solar tour had ever (gone virtual). We did have about 15 homes last year, but we are working hard to get other types of buildings this year,” said Ziegler. Previous years have highlighted

Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, whose solar system powers several of its buildings, including its café. Several municipal facilities were on the tour in 2019, including those in Uwchlan Township, which used state incentives to install electric vehicle charging stations at its township office. In southern Chester County, the tour included two large solar installations at Longwood Gardens and Marlboro Mushrooms. “Last year, we (highlighted) a family business - Lani Ice in Ludwigs Corner, which is solar powered,” said Ziegler. its solar-powered trailer. Those interested in participating on the tour will be asked to submit photos and a three-minute video about their use of solar power. Technical help will be provided if needed. This year, a live, in-person event

at the West Vincent Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, will serve as the kickoff to the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. The virtual tour, with videos and photo presentations, will be available at www.nationalsolartour.org, starting on Saturday, Oct. 2. See Tour pg 3

VEP’s first Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to tutor Shannon Almquist by VEP executive director Terri Potrako. “(Shannon) has been tutoring for 35 years ... and (was) one of the original 14 (VEP) volunteers,” said Potrako. “She has had multiple students and concurrent students.” Almquist is currently tutoring a student named Yameilha, who was featured during the virtual program, expressing her gratitude for the VEP program, which has helped her to greatly improve her English-speaking skills. There was also a tribute to the late Betsy Hawkes, a volunteer tutor, and her husband, Bob Hawkes. “When Bob passed, he

Hopewell’s founder, Mark Bird. “The Declaration of Independence and the subsequent victory in the Revolutionary War led a beacon of hope still felt around the world,” said Sean-Hammond. “Even today, international visitors come to see Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell as a great inspiration for freedom.” The ceremony ended with the signing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Happy Birthday” to America. Attendees were provided lyrics to the songs so they could sing along. Prior to the ceremony, neighboring French Creek State Park hosted a 1-mile walk to Hopewell along the Collier’s Trail. Visitors were also invited to enjoy tours by National Park Service rangers who led them through areas of Hopewell and spoke about the furnace, its history and some of the buildings at the site. “Christine and (the late) Francis Delmar put this program together 10 years ago, and we hope to continue to do it for years to come,” Shean-Hammond stated. “This is everyone’s celebration.” Musical selections included “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.” Emmert read selections from the patriotic poem “The Gift Outright.” “It was (featured) at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration by the poet who wrote it, Robert Frost,” she noted. Emmert also read the preamble to the Declaration of Independence, and Shean-Hammond read a list of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. According to www.facebook.com /HopewellFurnaceNHS, James Wilson is one of Hopewell Furnace’s most notable connections to the Declaration of Independence. Summer Road Trip from pg 1 downloading at www.berks libraries.org/branch/roadtoroots. The map includes a QR code that will lead participants to a summary of each location and provide a history of the landmark and historical photos. The program, according to event organizers, is designed to get families to explore Berks County in a safe manner while there are still some concerns about the pandemic. “Things are getting back to normal, but we are still in the transition stage,” said Amy Fulton, communications and marketing manager for the Berks History Center. “There is so much history in Berks County. It’s a vacation right in your backyard.” Participants are encouraged to visit the website of each location prior to visiting to learn the hours

of operation and site rules. While a majority of the locations are free, some may charge a nominal fee for entry. “We took cost into consideration (when choosing the sites),” said Fulton. “The majority of them don’t have admission fees. They have space to walk around, they have trails and (in some cases) you can bring your pets.” In addition to those already mentioned, some other sites on the tour are the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles and the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum. “We wanted to make the program manageable, but also give (participants) a list of options,” said Fulton, explaining why 13 sites were chosen for the tour.

“People can pick and choose what they feel comfortable with and do it on their own time and at their own pace. (Everyone) can partake in this summer adventure that offers local residents a unique and fun opportunity to learn more about the 300-year story of Berks County and its people.” Once participants have visited at least 10 out of the 13 locations, they are to return their map by Aug. 31 to MCL in exchange for a gift and entry into a drawing for gift cards and other prizes. The winners will be announced on Wednesday, Sept. 1. For more information about the Berks History Center and Road to Roots, visit the previously mentioned website, www.berkshistory .org or www.facebook.com/berks history or contact Fulton at a.fulton@berkshistory.org.

baby skunk,” said Ekdahl. “Animals that have been brought into the rehab but are not able to be (released) back into the wild become the center’s ‘ambassadors,’ and people learn about them.” Young will also share facts and misconceptions about some of the animals. “Archery” will be the program on July 21. Children will learn basic archery and safety skills from Bob Lauffer and then practice on targets that will be set up in the site’s back ballfield. “(Lauffer) is a trained archery instructor. This is his third year back,” noted Ekdahl. “What Lives in the Stream?” will be presented on July 28. Biologist Brad Basehor will teach attendees about the creatures that live in the Conestoga River at Poole Forge. “Mammals and Streams” will be the program on Aug. 4. Sallie Gregorie, an

Attendees will also learn about mammal adaptations and study animal artifacts, such as antlers. The series of programs will conclude on Aug. 11 with a “Wildlife/Nature Walk” presented by Phil Witman, a former teacher in the Garden Spot School District and a member of the Poole Forge board of directors. He will lead participants on a walk along the river and through the park while teaching them about animals, including reptiles that live in the area. For the two water programs, participants will be able to wade in the creek. Ekdahl noted that swimming and using water rafts and tubes in the river is prohibited. “We allow fishing and wading in our creek. We did a lot of creek restoration and planted a riparian buffer to improve the health and quality of the creek for fish habitats and wildlife,” she said. “(Other activities are) detrimental to the creek. Our creek is for wildlie and nature and not for swimming.” Children who attend the nature programs must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. In the event of a severe thunderstorm, the creek-related programs will be rescheduled. For more information, visit www.historicpooleforge.org or search for “Historic Poole Forge” on Facebook.
