Octorara FBLA Students Advance To State Competition By Francine Fulton

Several members from Octorara Area High School’s (OAHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter recently scored high marks in a regional competition that included different categories relating to business. Members had the option of competing as individuals or as teams in a category of their choice. First-place winners of the regional event included Consiglio Roselli, Accounting II - Individual; Casey Carr, Graphic Design - Team; and Gavin Camerote, Graphic Design Team. Samantha Tellez was a secondplace winner in Social Media Campaign - Individual. Third-place winners were John Beecher, Sports and Entertainment Marketing - Individual; Jack Jobe, Marketing - Team; and Makayla Roccia, Marketing - Team. Winning fourth place were Benjamin Pratt, Global

Business - Individual, and Jesus DuenasGonzalez, Advertising - Individual. By placing in the top four spots, the OAHS FBLA members will now move on to compete at the state level in Hershey in April. FBLA adviser Tammy Simon explained that students in the Accounting, Global Business, Sports and Entertainment Marketing and Marketing categories participated in objective testing that took place on Oct. 29, 2018, at OAHS. Students in the Graphic Design and Social Media Campaign categories competed in front of a panel of judges during a competition held on Dec. 6, 2018, at the Downingtown STEM Academy. “(Some students) did not have a performance part; it was just objective testing,” Simon said. “For the online testing, they had a two-hour window to complete the test. For most of them, it took the full amount of time. As the See Octorara FBLA pg 5

Young Missionary Hopes To Visit Compeer Chester County Names New Program Director Every Country In The World By Francine Fulton

While people in recovery from a mental illness are treated by professionals and various therapies, they may lack the support of personal friends. Helping to fill that gap is Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “We want to add friendship therapy to a person’s life,” said Donna Kueny, who was named the new Compeer Chester County program director on Dec. 17. “Both people benefit from that. The volunteers truly make a difference in someone’s life, and for the person in recovery their self-esteem level goes up and See Compeer pg 8

Two Chester County deputy sheriffs recently realized they had crossed paths years earlier. Deputy Sheriff Keith Neiswender and Deputy Sheriff Howard “Larry” Sipple met each other earlier this year when they joined the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office at the same time, the culmination of a somewhat circuitous journey to West Chester. Neiswender had been working for the Berks County Sheriff ’s Office, and Sipple had been employed by the Caln Township Police Department. But it was their earlier military service that prompted a startling discovery: In 1991 and 1992, they both served on the USS America. The revelation took a couple of weeks to surface. After being hired as deputies, the pair got to know each other during 13 weeks of field training. During that time, they maintained the same schedules and often ran into each other in the parking garage. One day, Sipple did a double-take when he saw “VF-102” on the side of Neiswender’s vehicle. Sipple said he knew immediately that Neiswender had served on the USS America because the VF-102 squadron was a sister squadron to his own, the VF-33. When he shared that information with Neiswender, he learned that they had both been deployed to the aircraft carrier during its 1991 to 1992 cruise. Neiswender, who had the decal custom-made, said he never imagined the connection it would forge. He also said that, though he has had countless chats with others over the years about his military service, the conversation with Sipple was the first one prompted by the logo.

Neither deputy can remember interacting directly on the warship, but the USS America’s average population is 5,000. During the deputies’ deployment, the USS America was focused on the Persian Gulf during the onset of Desert Storm. Sipple was responsible for working to test equipment for the F14 Tomcat and several other aircraft that operated on the ship. Neiswender was assigned to ensuring that the aircraft were loaded with the appropriate firepower. The epiphany about the deputies’ Navy connection came at a time when colleagues in the Sheriff’s Office were experiencing some trouble telling them apart. According to Sipple, he and

Neiswender look similar and joined the Sheriff’s Office at the same time. Compounding the difficulty, a change in personnel delayed the delivery of the deputies’ nametags. When the IDs finally arrived, the pair briefly considered switching them to continue confounding their co-workers, but their lessprankish sides prevailed.

Deputy Sheriff Howard “Larry” Sipple (left) and Deputy Sheriff Keith Neiswender recently learned that they shared more than a start date with the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office. A custom-made Navy decal prompted a revelation that the two Chester County deputy sheriffs had served on the same military ship in 1991 and 1992.

They could tell that the kids had prepared,” said Simon, who is in her first year as FBLA adviser. “If they place at states, they move on to nationals,” she added. FBLA is open to students in grades nine through 12. “Anyone can join the club and they can join anytime throughout the year,” Simon noted. “A large percentage of (FBLA) students will go into a business career or they are interested in having their own business. (But), they don’t have to (have a future career) in business because the club has so much to offer.” She noted that students interested in agriculture also benefit from club membership. The club meets monthly to discuss various topics and competitions. “If the kids want to compete, they can; it is not mandatory. The kids prepare on their own,” Simon pointed out. “For our last meeting we talked about the competition and we went over the different categories they had the option to focus on. Our next meeting will focus on fundraising. To go to states, the kids need to raise money to pay their way.” As a first-year adviser, Simon said she was particularly pleased with the outcome of the regional competition. “I am super proud of them,” she said. “They put a lot of work and effort into it on their own time. They were very self-motivated.”

Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), believes that Steve and Annie Chapman are the perfect guest speakers and singers for the organization’s fourth annual Valentine’s banquet. “The Chapmans were chosen because they have ministered to people in marriages for 40 years,” said Santiago. “Our desire is to encourage people in marriages, and (the

Chapmans) have years of experience in their own marriage as well as encouraging others.” Santiago added that the banquet should offer an enriching experience for engaged couples as well. RTCM will hold the 2019 Valentine’s banquet at Yoder’s Restaurant Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the meal, the event will include live and Chinese

auctions with items provided by local businesses. According to Santiago, auction items will include romantic getaways for couples as well as flowers, candy, books, videos, and music geared toward encouraging positive marriage experiences. Santiago said that the Chapmans’ music has spoken to his own marriage to his wife, Pam. “The song ‘The Ships Are Burning’ talks about (the metaphor of) a couple (that) gets married (and sails) to a deserted island,” said Santiago. He explained that some couples dock their ships, but that the song recommends burning the ships because “there’ll be no turning back for you and me.” “When Pam and I got married, this song spoke volumes to me,” said Santiago. “I wanted to make that type of commitment to her (because) no matter how many times we bump heads, we don’t quit on (making the) journey together.” RTCM strives to help individuals who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 clients in the last year, and four more are due to graduate the day before the banquet. The ministry was founded in 2015 and accepted its first clients in 2016. The ministry has four livein staff members at its Lancaster facility, which Santiago believes is necessary for accountability and success. “We will end 2018 in the black, which is good financially. We are thankful for that,”

said Santiago. Santiago has many years of experience working with individuals fighting addictions. “I tell them, ‘I will meet you where you are,’” Santiago said, adding that moving from bondage to obedience to freedom means exposing their true selves. “The bottom line is that as long as you’re not dealing with the trauma (in your past), the pain ... drives you to (bad decisions),” said Santiago. “That’s the ritual … the escape.” According to Santiago, many clients wear a false self and keep their real self hidden. RTCM teaches clients that they need to bring the real self out and acknowledge mistakes to eventually replace false beliefs with God’s truth, which leads to healthy behavior. Table sponsorships for the event are available. Tickets, which are required for individuals to attend the banquet, must be purchased by Tuesday, Jan. 15. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to purchase tickets may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org. Individuals who would like to learn more about RTCM may visit www.restart ministry.org. Pictured on front: Annie and Steve Chapman will entertain guests with their music as well as speak on ways to develop a lasting marriage when they give the presentation at Restart Training Center Ministry’s fourth annual Valentine’s banquet at Yoder’s Restaurant in New Holland on Jan. 30.

Animal advocates and environmentally conscious shoppers are invited to “adopt” real, living manatees from the Save the Manatee Club. The Adopt-AManatee program was started to raise more awareness of Florida’s imperiled marine mammals. For a donation, the Save the Manatee Club will send a personalized adoption packet, which includes an adoption certificate, a photo and the life history of a real Florida manatee, and a membership handbook. Manatees like Rocket, Howie, Ariel, and Gator are all popular adoptees, and a new female manatee, Moo Shoo, has been added to the Adopt-AManatee program at Blue Spring

State Park in Orange City, Fla. Save the Manatee Club is an nonprofit conservation organization whose mission is to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations. Through increased public awareness, habitat protection, and enforcement of boating regulations, the organization hopes to ensure manatees survive for the enjoyment of generations to come. Unclaimed Property Listed State Sen. Andy Dinniman reminds residents to check with the Pennsylvania Treasury’s Bureau of Unclaimed Property to see if there is property waiting for them to claim. The Treasury returned hundreds of millions in unclaimed property to Pennsylvanians last year. Still, there is more than $3.4 billion in unclaimed property waiting to be claimed by its rightful owners and about 1 in 10 residents have unclaimed property waiting for them. Individuals may search the registry by visiting www.patreasury.gov or calling the Treasury’s Bureau of Unclaimed Property toll-free at 800-222-2046. Unclaimed property is any financial asset that has gone

unclaimed for a period of time, usually three years. Under Pennsylvania law, businesses are required to report this to Treasury, which serves as the custodian until it can find and verify its rightful legal owner. The registry includes items from forgotten bank accounts and stocks, uncashed checks, and rebates, the contents of safety deposit boxes and other unclaimed property. Dinniman encourages local residents to search the database and see if the Treasury may be holding unclaimed property for them.

meet people on the streets and help out wherever I can.” He said that finding missionary organizations to work with has been the most challenging part of his journey. “I research and spend hours finding missionary groups and organizations in that part of the country, introduce myself, explain what I would like to do and (volunteer to) serve in any way,” he stated. “It’s a lot of logistics work.” Conner noted that his favorite country to visit so far in his life has been China. “I have been there four times. I have three adopted siblings from China,” he said. “It’s close to my heart; I love the culture.” He said that a lot of his travels have been financed through donations. “God provides. People donate and bless me with donations without me even asking,” he said. “My parents provided the initial cost of the trip, but I have not publicly looked for donations, so that’s been pretty awesome.” Following his journey, Conner plans to continue mission work as his career goal. “As of now, I am not exactly sure of what I will do. I might go to a Bible or missionary college,” he stated. “I see me traveling and doing missionary work or settling down in one country.”

Missionary from pg 1 “I really love traveling and doing mission work; my first mission trip was at age 12 to Guatemala,” Conner said, explaining how his mission objective came about. “It is something I always liked doing and just decided to make it a goal traveling to each country of the world.” Conner recently spent a week at home in Chester County for Christmas. “I got back on Dec. 22 from Haiti,” Conner explained. “Three of my sisters came down and met me (in Haiti), and we volunteered at an orphanage and distributed ‘shoes that grow,’ which adjust in size as children grow. It was an amazing trip.” Next for Conner will be a trip to China and Mongolia. “I will be working with a local missionary family. They have youth programs and sports ministries, and I will serve with them in Mongolia,” he explained. “After that, I will go back to China and give out Gospel booklets.” Conner graduated in May of 2018 and started his mission work on June 19. “I flew from New York to Iceland to Belgium. I travel individually, but I meet up with different missionary groups,” he reported. “A lot of time I talk to people on the trains, and sometimes I

According to Kueny, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Volunteers are asked to meet with their friends for four hours minimum each month for one year. The pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or going to a sporting event. Kueny noted that she was a volunteer Compeer friend herself. “We mostly went out to lunch and (shopping), and we did a lot of phone support,” she said. “ We also attended Compeersponsored events, including the Friendship Luncheon and the picnic in the summertime.” She explained that her primary role as the new program director is to facilitate the matches. She is also working on a new program called CompeerCORPS Vet2Vet, which will match veteran volunteers with veterans in recovery from mental illness. “We live in a society where most people want to volunteer and do something to make a difference,” Kueny stated. “Compeer is so wonderful because the one thing that people in mental health recovery never have (enough of is) friends. There is a lot of social isolation with mental health.”

Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional. “The people we accept into the program are working in conjunction with their therapist or case manager,” noted Kueny. “They have been stable in the community for a while and they have the support of the entire team throughout the whole process.” Volunteers, who undergo an interview, a background check and a training session, are of various ages and come from different backgrounds. “We are actually getting a lot of younger people, which is helpful,” Kueny said, noting that Compeer Chester County has held recruiting events at West Chester and Widener universities, among others. As of Nov. 30, 2018, Kueny reported that there are 52 Compeer matches in Chester County. This includes 41 one-to-one matches; seven calling matches, where pairs talk on the phone; three e-buddies, where the friends communicate via email; and one group match for veterans led by Rob Chisholm, Compeer Chester County’s founder, who still volunteers with the program. Municipalities, institutions of higher education, counties, and community-based organizations implementing violence-prevention initiatives can apply to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) for competitive grant funding. Applicants for 2019 Community Violence Prevention Grants may submit proposals for one-time events or for one- or two-year projects and may request up to $350,000. All applications must be submitted by Thursday, Feb. 7. Awards will be approved and announced at the public meeting of the School Safety and Security Committee in April. Projects should begin on Wednesday, May 1. Those interested in applying may visit www.pccdegrants .pa.gov/Egrants/Public/Open Announcements.aspx. Interested applicants who are not already registered in PCCD’s E-grants system must register before applying at www.pccd.pa.gov/Funding/Pages/ Egrants-Home.aspx. The funding for this grant became available in 2018-19 under Act 44 of 2018. The act established the School Safety and Security Grant Program and specified that up to 12.5 percent, or $7.5 million, would be earmarked for community violence prevention.

Local supporters of the Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County Inc. (CVC) once again came together to make the holidays brighter for local victims of crime and violence in Chester County. The Friars’ Society and the Abbé Society at West Chester University worked with agency advocates to coordinate a sizable stack of gifts for two specific families in need this holiday season. The Friars have a commitment to serve not only the university, but also surrounding community, which includes CVC at a half-mile away. Additional support came from CVC’s annual Mrs. Claus Fund, which began years ago as a collaborative effort between CVC and Detective Dave Maurer of the West Goshen Police Department. The idea originally stemmed from a client need for essential winter clothing; it then developed into raising necessary funds. Each year the Mrs. Claus Fund raises money and secures gift cards for clients who need a little extra help, especially around the holidays. The fund assists with essentials like filling up the car with gas, buying snow boots and coats, or making sure that children have a gift to open on Christmas Day. Maurer, a longtime supporter of CVC, spearheads the Mrs. Claus effort each year and joined the agency’s board of directors in

November. The largest donations of gift cards and cash came in through coordinated efforts from the Doris Jonas Freed American Inn of Court, coordinated by Samantha Cole, Esquire; Automated Financial Services Inc., coordinated by Erica Bruckus; Christ Community Church; West Goshen Police Department; and Kimberly Metcalf. Those interested in contributing to the agency’s yearround efforts can do so by making a donation. The agency is currently in the midst of its “Annual Giving Campaign: Help Give Victims Hope,” in which the agency is celebrating its 45th anniversary. To learn more about the campaign, readers may visit www.cvcofcc.org/donate.

The reservoir has developed a reputation as a good place to catch bass. It is also home to yellow and white perch, white crappie, walleye, perch, catfish, and many varieties of sunfish. In addition, the Octoraro Reservoir is popular location for birdwatching and has been designated an Important Bird Area by the

A Taste of Phoenixville, a fundraiser to support Good Samaritan Services (GSS), will be held at a new venue this year - the Franklin Commons, 400 Franklin Ave., Phoenixville. The 17th annual event, which will feature food and beverages, as well as a silent auction, live music and dancing, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 6 to 10 p.m. People also have an opportunity to purchase tickets for a VIP reception to be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Those who attend the event will be treated to hors d’oeuvres and samples of main dishes and desserts prepared by chefs from local fine restaurants and caterers. Among the menu items will be Irish-American cuisine, seafood, pasta and an assortment of sandwiches. Desserts will include gourmet baked goods and chocolate and specialty coffees. As part of the evening, representatives from each establishment will set up a table, and participants will be invited to move from station to station to sample the food. “We will have at least 20 restaurants,” noted Christine Stoltzfus, GSS events manager. She noted that the restaurants are currently being featured at www.facebook.com/TasteofPhoenixville. The event will also feature musical

Your

entertainment by Hytha Family Band, featuring Greg and Linda Hytha, who have performed at the event each year since its inception. A dance floor will be available. The evening will also include a silent auction offering items donated by local businesses such as artwork, jewelry and sports memorabilia. “We will also have gift cards for restaurants and outings to local museums,” noted Stoltzfus. An online mobile bidding system will be utilized this year for the fifth time. As part of the process, ticketholders can use their smartphones to bid on silent auction items while they are at the event or beforehand. The event is the organization’s major fundraiser, bringing in about $60,000 each year through ticket sales, the silent auction and sponsorships. More than 500 people attended the 2018 event. The Good Samaritan Shelter, a private, nonprofit, nondenominational Christian organization, was started by several Phoenixville-area churches and other community supporters in 1999. The shelter’s name comes from the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, which teaches people to love others by taking care of their physical and emotional needs. The shelter now includes eight properties, six in Phoenixville for men and two in Ephrata for women and children. The

shelters offer a safe place to sleep, meals, counseling, training and job placement assistance. In 2017, the organization merged with Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties. The merger created a new organization, Good Samaritan Services. According to GSS chief executive officer Nate Hoffer, funds generated at A Taste of Phoenixville will support all of the organization’s services and programs. In his year-end report, Hoffer announced GSS’ accomplishments in 2018. He noted that 342 individuals and families received emergency shelter, transitional living and permanent housing during the year, noting that about half of the number represents children. Additionally, 70 percent of program participants found employment. GSS also helped its clients increase their financial stability by providing more than $11,000 through the Matched Savings and Microloan programs. Finally, GSS provided more than $90,000 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties. The Taste of Phoenixville benefit committee recently gathered to mail out invitations to the event, which will be held on Jan. 17 at the Franklin Commons. Co-coordinators Jim Godfrey (left) and Mary Etta Reinhart invite the public to join them for Financial Peace University, which will be offered on Mondays from Jan. 28 to March 25 at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. A free preview will be held on Jan. 21.

25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jim is a former technology education teacher, and he will lead the classes, sharing plenty of anecdotes from his own experiences. Each session will also involve watching a DVD of instruction given by Ramsey. Attendees will learn about budgeting, saving, eliminating debt, and investing. “The class is interesting, and Jim is a good teacher,” Mary Etta commented. “The strength of the class is in the interaction. You can come to class, share your struggles and successes, and bounce ideas off each other.” “When you’re finally out of debt, (the program) gives you permission to spend, and it gives you financial peace,” Jim added. “Those are two words that don’t typically go together: ‘financial’ and ‘peace.’” While the series will be offered at a Christian church, folks of all religious backgrounds are welcome to attend. Jim described the program as “not heavily faith-based,” but Ramsey does occasionally refer to biblical ideals. “Until I listened to (Ramsey), I didn’t realize how much the Bible talks about finances,” Jim remarked. Child care will be offered at no charge for youngsters up to age 12 by members of MGCB’s children’s outreach ministry. Jim and Mary Etta are excited to be able to offer child care because it removes a barrier to participation. “Parents sometimes say, ‘We would love to attend, but we don’t have child care,’” Mary Etta said. “If they’re trying to get out of debt, spending (additional) money on child care is kind of (foolish),” Jim pointed out. A free preview will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21. During the session, attendees will watch introductory videos, pick up class materials, and ask questions of Jim and Mary Etta. Child care will be provided. A limited amount of materials will be available at a discount, and they will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Folks may register for the class, purchase discounted materials, or learn more about the program by calling Mary Etta at 717-786-4323 or Jim at 717-687-0237.

At the beginning of summer 2006, Jim and Sharon Godfrey were in a good situation regarding their finances. They had five figures in savings and decided it was time to take care of some home repairs. Then, it seemed like everything that could go wrong did. At the start of autumn, the couple realized they had neglected to reserve funds to pay their union dues, then one child hit a deer with their car, and two weeks later, the sec-

ond child hit a deer with their car. “We found ourselves living paycheck to paycheck,” Jim recalled. The pain of the Godfreys’ mistakes with money made Dave Ramsey’s financial principles look attractive, and after listening to Ramsey’s talk show on satellite radio, the couple decided to put those principles into practice. In a decade, the couple had paid off four auto loans and a mortgage, and they retired early. “(Debt) feels like a monster is after you,” Mary Etta Reinhart mused, adding that there is hope. “You can get out of debt.” Jim and Mary Etta are the co-coordinators of the upcoming session of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, which Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren (MGCB) will host on Mondays from Jan. 28 to March

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition - January 9, 2019 - 11

Handling A Prolonged Power Outage Accidents and storms can disrupt the electricity that powers everything in homes and businesses. A short-term loss of power can be a nuisance, but extended power outages can cause damage and may even be dangerous. Widespread power outages are often anticipated during or after severe storms, which can disable entire power grids. Because damaged power lines and infrastructure must be carefully assessed after severe storms, it may take anywhere from hours to several days before power is fully restored. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that food spoilage is one of the hazards of long-term power outages. If a storm is imminent, local residents can be proactive by freezing the contents of the refrigerator when possible so that items can stay at safe temperatures longer, advises the FDA. Food can remain safe for up to two hours at refrigerator temperature

before it starts to spoil. Grouping food together in the freezer also can help it stay colder longer. Having extra ice on hand or freezing containers of water also can provide a chilling effect, as well as serve as a water supply if faucet water is unavailable, which can be a concern for those with well-pumped water. Individuals’ barbecue can turn out to be beneficial during power outages. Many stoves, even gas ones, will not light because of electric ignitions. A gas camping stove or barbecue can serve as the primary place to cook food until power is restored. People should always have a secondary propane tank on hand. Plenty of bottled water should be kept on hand, especially if one’s regular water supply is well-fed and requires an electric pump to activate flow. People should stock up on blankets and warm clothing. Power outages during the winter can be

especially challenging because of the lack of heat in a home. Family members can huddle together in small rooms to conserve heat. People with wood-burning stoves can use them to keep warm. Fireplaces tend to be more show than ambient heat providers, but they can still serve as a heat source in a pinch. Those who have a generator should run it safely. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that generators should be operated as far away from the house as possible to avoid deadly carbon monoxide fumes. Also, individuals should use appropriately gauged, outdoor-rated extension cords to power up generators. It is also important to stay put and avoid the road after a storm that causes a power outage. Wires may be down, traffic lights may not work, and dangerous debris may be littering the roads. Hunkering down is the best approach until power is restored.

Vehicle Safety Looking For A Home? Advice Given After home and work, the next most common place people spend their time is in their vehicles. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says the average American spends 17,600 minutes driving each year. Because they spend so much time behind the wheel, drivers need to be prepared for breakdowns. Packing an emergency kit in the car can help people make the best of such situations. A car emergency kit can help drivers get back on the road promptly. Without such kits, drivers may be stranded for hours after a breakdown. Emergency kits also come in handy during weatherrelated events that can sideline cars until roads become passable. Getting caught in a vehicle during a snowstorm and failing to have the proper gear can be a life-threatening scenario under extreme conditions. The Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Homeland Security note that these key items should always be included in a car emergency kit: durable bags or crates to store supplies, a complete first aid kit, a small fire extinguisher, jumper cables, rain ponchos, a plastic tarp, flashlights and extra batteries, bottled water, a small cache of nonperishable foods, a wrench and pliers, local maps, rags, duct tape, a multipurpose tool, an ice scraper, automotive fluids, blankets and warm clothing, cat litter for slick roads, tire-changing equipment, a spare tire, road flares or caution reflectors, an empty gas canister, cash for gas and a phone charger cable. Being prepared can make a difference when vehicles are sidelined. In addition to an emergency kit, cars and trucks should be regularly maintained to prevent breakdowns. This includes ensuring all fluids are at proper levels, filters are changed, batteries are in good working order and tires are inflated correctly. Investing in a roadside assistance service also can help get drivers back on the road quickly.

spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania. The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight. There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. Support Grants Available State Cultural and Historical Support Grants are now available for qualified museums and official county historical societies. This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PMHC) has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program. A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-19 state budget for the initiative. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is restricted to eligible organizations that are not supported by other state agency funding programs, including museums located in Pennsylvania with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. Some museums are not eligible if they are eligible for grant support from other state agencies. The maximum award for a museum is $65,000. In addition, official county historical societies are eligible to apply. The awards for Official County Historical Societies range from $2,500 to $4,000. Applicants must meet organizational eligibility requirements.Awards are based on a calculation that uses the operating budget from the most recently completed fiscal year. Applications must be received by Friday, Jan. 25. All PHMC grant applications are now submitted on the commonwealth’s Single Application for Assistance system at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us. Eligibility information and grant guidelines can be found at www.phmc.pa.gov.
