Lodge Will Host 111th Groundhog Day Celebration By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Will winter continue for six more weeks, or will Pennsylvania have an early spring? That is the question that noted prognosticator Octorara Orphie will answer at the 111th Groundhog Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville, 248 White Rock Road, Quarryville. Following the traditions that have been set for more than a century, the festivities will be held outdoors, beginning at 8:15 a.m. with a ceremonial parade from the covered bridge over the Octorara Creek. The creek will play a role later in the ceremony, as the members of the Baby Class of 2019 will be inducted into the prophetic world of arctomanciferial predictification when one of
them is dunked in the frigid water, among other rituals. Contrary to their name, the “babies” are fully grown men. They include Dain Carson of Columbia, Mark Hadesty of Strasburg, Joseph Paterson of Holtwood, Michael Rutt of Quarryville, and Thomas Waltman of New Providence. “I have been a guest at many lodge functions and have developed some very good friendships, and (I) wish to continue that,” Hadesty remarked. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been intrigued by the lodge sitting atop the hill of the West Branch of the Octorara Creek, the stream in which I spent most of my childhood days and still do,” Rutt added. “I feel it would be an honor to be a member of this brotherhood.” The 111th Groundhog Day celebration at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge in See Groundhog Day pg 4 Quarryville will kick off on Feb. 2 with a parade beginning at 8:15 a.m.
PJP II Will Observe Catholic Schools Week By Francine Fulton
An open house, Faculty and Student Appreciation Days and special assemblies are just some of the activities being planned at Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) in West Brandywine in celebration of Catholic Schools Week (CSW). CSW, an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, will be observed from Sunday, Jan. 27, through Friday, Feb 1. This See PJP II pg 2
Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School students work on their STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) project in preparation for a STREAM Expo that will be held during a community open house on Jan. 27. Offering Families A Flight Plan By Ann Mead Ash
According to Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church in Paradise, parenting is not always easy, and church members would like to offer local parents a little help. “This is a way for us to come alongside parents and (offer them) resources (for) what we think is a really difficult job: to raise kids in 2019,” said Fisher. “It’s a different climate (than in the past).” With that goal in mind, Keystone will hold “Family Flight Plan” featuring guest speaker Jeff Reed on Sunday, Feb. 10. Reed will speak at both morning services, which will be held at 9 and 10:35 a.m., at the Keystone Church Worship Center, 20 Harristown Road, Paradise, and he will hold a special conference session from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening. “We want to be an encouragement to parents and to acknowledge that their job with their (children can be) hard,”
Jeff Reed said Fisher. “We want to let them know they’re not alone in the challenges they’re facing and that we have resources … to both encourage and inspire them with tools and training to direct their kids to know and love See Family Flight Plan pg 4

year’s national theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” PJP II, located at 2875 Manor Road (Route 82), Coatesville, will kick off the celebration with a community open house on Jan. 27 from noon to 2 p.m. Visitors will be able to tour the school, which serves 612 students from prekindergarten to eighth grade. PJP II is also home to Little Saints Academy, which serves infants and toddlers from 3 to 36 months of age. “It’s an open house for both current and prospective families,” said Maria Samson, PJP advancement director. “Prospective families will have an opportunity to get a personal tour with a student or parent ambassador. We will also have information on how to apply for the next school year.” In addition, a Scholastic Book Fair will
take place in the library during the open house and is open to the community. Those who visit the open house will have an opportunity to view students’ projects in the STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) Expo. The exhibits will be on display in the school’s gymnasium. “There will also be art displayed from our lower grades, kindergarten through fourth,” said Samson, noting that the artwork will feature a science component. Complimentary baked goods will be available in the school’s multipurpose room throughout the event. Also featured during CSW will be special student activities, including Movie Star Monday on Monday, Jan. 28, where students will be invited to dress up as their favorite celebrity or movie character. On Tuesday, Jan. 29, there will be a Human Board Game assembly for
fourth- through eighth-graders and a Puppets Pizzazz assembly for the younger students. Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, which will include a free breakfast provided by the PJP II Home and School Association, will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30. There will also be a flag football game in the school gym that day. Crazy Hair and Hat Day will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, which will be Student Appreciation Day. Additionally, PJP II families will be able to enjoy an event at a local trampoline park that evening. The week will conclude with a closing Mass at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 1 at St. Peter Church, located next to the school. There will also be a new activity, Step-Up Day. “ Students will have an opportunity to get a first-hand look at what they will be doing in the next school year,” Samson explained. “It will get them excited about
some of the highlights of their next academic grade.” PJP II principal Sarah Kerins said the week is designed to showcase all that Catholic schools have to offer. She listed some of the school’s strengths, as noted by comments from visitors: “a strong foundation of academics, the way students treat each other and the way the faculty interacts with them, our Gospel values, the focus in the classroom and the self-discipline that the students learn.” PJP II serves the parishes of St. Peter in West Brandywine, Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Joseph in Coatesville and Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg. For more information on the school or any Catholic Schools Week activities, readers may contact Samson at 610-384-5961, ext. 5408, or msamson@popejohnpaul2sch.org. Bowers also served in a volunteer capacity with the London Grove Planning Commission, with the Economic Development Council’s AgConnect, and as an agriculture stakeholder for the Chester County Planning Commission’s comprehensive plan update. Dallap-Schaer is the medical director at New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where she specializes in emergency medicine and critical care of large animals. She and her husband, Tom, own and operate Meadowset Farm and Apiary in Landenberg. At Meadowset they focus on their bee yard, where the honeybees produce honey, pollen, propolis, and beeswax. Although lodge membership is restricted to men, family is an important part of lodge life. “I have always seen how happy and what being a member means to my grandfather, and I (will) enjoy having that type of friendship that has meant so much to him,” Waltman commented. “I was impressed with the way the lodge members were there for my family when my mother-in-law and father-inlaw died,” Carson noted. Additionally, the lodge will welcome Col. Tom McCardell as an honorary inductee and Richard McMinn as assistant inductee. McCardell is a native of Kirkwood and a graduate of Solanco High School and the United States Military Academy. vision of what they need to do for a (child) to take off before leaving the nest,” explained Fisher. “Our goal is to send them off where they are able to fly on their own, (including) what we might want to do to prepare them for the day that they flap their wings and soar.” Lauren Smoker, communication coordinator for Keystone, added that Reed’s illustration depicts the parents as watching from the tower. “(The parents) can see the bigger picture in directing (their children) for takeoff,” Smoker explained. The evening conference will include light refreshments, table talk and discussion time, and a question-and-answer period. There will also be a special activity for all children up to and through fourth grade. Ann Marie Fletcher-Moore, who makes every effort to help shoppers by keeping the facility neat and well organized. The fiction section is sorted alphabetically by author, and nonfiction books are sorted into categories such as sports, history, decorating, self-help, cookbooks and parenting. “We’ve broken everything down into smaller categories, and everything is alphabetized within its section,” she explained. “In sports, for example, there is basketball, golf, hunting and fishing. Even fiction is broken down into mystery, romance and classics, (among other sections).” She noted that the store also offers books of local interest, coffee table books and large-print books. Additionally, there is a children’s section where the books are also alphabetized. In the children’s area, visitors will find a checkers game and a miniature couch where children can read while their parents shop. “We have to be organized. This way, we can help people find the books they are looking for,” Fletcher-Moore stated. “You can put in a request for a book. If a book comes in through donations, we will call and tell you and you can come pick it up.” Fletcher-Moore noted that the store is always seeking book donations. The public is invited to donate new or used books in good condition. Books are accepted on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to offering convenient shopping, the bookstore also promotes reading by offering monthly specials and “Wacky Wednesday” sales promotions. In fact, even though the title is “Family Flight Plan,” Fisher said that anyone in leadership may gain helpful information from Reed’s teaching. Reed is a Lifeway representative who has developed a relationship with Keystone. He has served in full-time ministry for more than 20 years. His past titles have included student pastor, worship pastor, children’s pastor, executive pastor, senior pastor, and family pastor. “(Reed) has a rich background in helping to equip parents to raise up children in biblical ways,” said Fisher, who noted that Reed has shared his abilities in training with Keystone at a past parenting conference. According to Fisher, the “Family Flight Plan” title relates to the illustration Reed will use in teaching the workshop. “(Reed will use that analogy) to give parents a

all diet and health books are 50 percent off. “I work with the other volunteers to (establish) a theme,” Fletcher-Moore said, noting the that theme is reflected in the store’s two front window displays. “The theme in February will (revolve around) Valentine’s Day. We might offer pink books for sale.” She also noted that a bag sale is offered daily at the bookstore. For a fee, shoppers can fill a bag of books; bags are provided. “I sell over 20,000 books a year. We get at least 40 to 50 boxes of donations a week,” Fletcher-Moore pointed out, noting that the most popular sellers are cookbooks and trade-size fiction titles, which are larger-size books. “We have new arrivals that we put up in front in hardback and paperback. These are books that people have read once and then donated to us.” “This is our ninth year in this store,” she added. “Second Reading I is on Church Street in West Chester, and they have been around for more than 25 years.” Fletcher-Moore said that the success of Second Reading II, which opened nine years ago, is thanks to the hard-working volunteers. “Without the volunteers, it wouldn’t run as smoothly. They sort, shelve and work with the customers,” she
said. “Most of them are retirees; they range in age from about 55 to close to 90. I also have younger people - high school and college students - who do volunteer hours as well.” Fletcher-Moore believes that many people still prefer reading a book rather than a tablet or e-reader. “Even with all the electronics, (reading) is coming back,” she said. “People are reading, and they are reading to their children. It’s a nice thing to see for the community.” The Second Reading II Bookstore is located in the Parkway Shopping Center, 929 S. High St., West Chester. For more information, including volunteer opportunities, readers may call 610-431-2117 or visit www.wcseniors.org/second -reading-ii-book-store or www.face book.com/wcsecondbook2. When Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) holds its community open house on Sunday, Jan. 27, visitors will be able to view a STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) Expo in the school gymnasium. At the expo, students will display projects that focus on global issues like hunger and lack of access to clean water. The students’ projects are designed to improve the lives of those who live in impoverished countries. While many schools offer STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs, Catholic schools nationwide have added the “R” aspect to incorporate faithbased learning in the curriculum. At PJP II, fifth- through eighth-graders have completed STREAM projects for the expo in collaboration with ProjectEngin, a program that has students using STREAM to tackle realworld issues based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The goals include zero hunger, quality education, affordable and clean energy, clean water and sanitation and good health and well-being, among others. “It’s about reducing hunger and poverty and (about) the stewardship of the Earth, and all of those concepts are part of the Catholic social justice teachings,” explained Jill Wentzel, PJP II STEM coordinator. “We are really trying to have our students not only think about creating cool scientific and engineering marvels, but we are also encouraging them to think about how they can better the world for people who really need assistance.” She explained that the students have been working in teams of four to create projects that focus on the Sustainable Development Goals. “We have teams working on nutritional
supplement bars for (people in) areas that have a hard time receiving constant nutrition,” Wentzel reported. “We have a team working on a biodegradable shoe that can be produced in the region that they are focusing on to provide employment opportunities and move away from using plastics for cheap footwear. We have a group working on a portable waterwheel that can be used to generate electricity.” Wentzel noted that each team was required to complete several steps prior to building its invention. “There is a marketing portion, a background and research portion and the engineering design and protype build,” she said. A panel of judges will view the projects as the students present their ideas. “Our judges will be acting almost like venture capitalists. It will be like ‘Shark Tank,’ but not as intense,” noted Wentzel. “The students are prepping their ideas as if they could hopefully go to production and really send these things to the region that needs the help.” She said that all of the team members took part in the various aspects of the project. “There are roles within the groups, but each of the students participated in the research and development and each student was exposed to the building process,” Wentzel noted. “They were also required to keep an engineering design notebook.” The projects will be judged prior to the expo on Friday, Jan. 25, and the top three projects will go to the STEM Expo in the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J., in April. “In our first year (of STREAM education), they have invited us to be a part of their expo,” noted Wentzel. PJP II is located at 2875 Manor Road (Route 82), Coatesville. The open house on Jan. 27 will be held from noon to 2 p.m.
