Registration is currently underway for spring play at the league’s website, www.octoraralittleleague .org, and the deadline to register is at midnight on Saturday, Feb. 10. The four fields are located behind the Christiana Lions Club building, and there is also a concession stand. Octorara Little L eague is volunteer-run, and its mission

statement reads, in part, “Our dedicated coaches and volunteers are committed to instilling values of teamwork, discipline and responsibility, both on and off the field.” “ E v e r yo n e o n t h e b o a rd , coaches and assistant coaches are volunteers,” Kowalchik pointed out. “Our concession stand is volunteer-run. Support group to help those dealing with grief BY FRANCINE FULTON

For those struggling with the death of a loved one, GriefShare can help. GriefShare is a free in-person support group program for anyone who is grieving the loss of a spouse, parent, child of any age, friend, sibling, co-worker or relative. Locally, the program is offered on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg, and it is facilitated by Paul and Twila Ranck. Meetings began on Jan. 16 and will run through April 9. People can attend GriefShare at any time because each meeting is self-contained. At each of the GriefShare sessions,

which are designed for people age 15 and older, attendees watch a 30-minute video on a grief-related topic that features real-life stories of people who have experienced loss. “We watch the video, and each video is on a certain topic, but they are all related to grief and experiences people go through,” Paul explained. “Then we have a time where we gather around and share together mostly about what is in the video. Or (we ask attendees),‘How is life going?’ or ‘What are you facing and how can we help?’” All participants are provided with a free workbook, which corresponds to the video. “The workbook has an

outline of the video where people can write notes,” Paul said. “Some people go back after the session and go through it. There is also a daily devotional that you can go through until the next week comes around. There is lot of helpful information in the workbook.” People are welcome to repeat the sessions. “We often have people that repeat the 13-week session, or they will come back for one they might have missed or want to refresh a certain video that may want to hear again,” said Paul. “We’ve had some who have attended at least three sessions. It depends who you are and what you are going through.”

Paul noted that people go through various stages in grief as time passes, which is another reason to repeat the GriefShare program. “What you hear this time might be different from the next time because you are in a different stage,” Paul said. “Sometimes the fog is so thick you can’t hear anything the first time or you don’t get much

Topic: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction From Doug: The life of discipleship is “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” The journey begins when we recognize who God is and who we are and call to Him as Psalm 130 discusses. My thought is to use my life’s journey to illustrate the life of obedience which includes moments of victory, moments of defeat, moments of loss, and moments of joy. Doug Myer began his management career with WDAC Radio Company in 1999 and currently oversees all operations. He is a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute and Lancaster Bible College, where he met his wife, Janet. They live in Strasburg and have three children and three grandchildren and counting.

Alex Van Patten, public information officer with Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), is looking forward to holding the organization’s annual Winter Field Day, and he would like to make contact with the International Space Station during that event. “We are hoping to utilize the International Space Station and other satellites that have radios on board,”said Van Patten, who noted that the two entities have connected in the past. “I can’t guarantee that will happen again, but it was a nice surprise when it did.”Van Patten added that a number of astronauts currently on the space station have their amateur radio license. The 2024 event, presented by RRR, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The group plans to begin setting up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from all time zones. Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center. Special workshops to instruct attendees in a particular skill are always a highlight of the event. “We will have stations to help people learn to solder small electronics,” said Van Patten. “That’s a very hands-on (activity).” Soldering stations will open at 2 p.m. and remain open for the duration of the event. “We will also deep fry a turkey,” said Van Patten, who noted that the plan is for the gobbler to go into the oil bath at 1 p.m. on Jan. 27. “People like to deep fry things,” he added. Presently, there are 50 licensed amateur radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code and more than 1,500 in the county. This is the 91st year “hams” - as amateur radio enthusiasts are often called - have used Field Day to demonstrate radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in

public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. During Winter Field Day, club members will work to contact other clubs in the U.S. and amateur radio operators abroad. “We will converse internationally,” said Van Patten, who added that the event will be interactive. “The purpose is

That is great to see happen,”Paul said. “This last group that we had formed a text group and they asked us to join in. We had a caring group there.” He added that some support group members will also meet outside of the meetings. “They go for lunch or dinner. We have been invited to some of (those gatherings),” said Paul. The topic for the meeting on Jan. 30 will be “Loneliness and Sadness.” Future topics will include “Self-Care” on Feb. 5 and “Fearful and Overwhelmed” on Feb. 13. For more information about the GriefShare session at Gateway Church or to register, visit www .griefshare.org/groups/177709. Walk-ins will also be welcome. Burns Night from pg 1

on the cultural significance of haggis. In 1786, Burns wrote the poem “Address to a Haggis,” which contributed to the food’s popularity and its selection as Scotland’s national dish. In addition to haggis, a buffet of beef, potato and leek soup, shortbread and other Scottish dishes will be served. After supper, revelers will be invited to honor Burns by sharing his poems and speeches with each other. The readings often begin with a recitation of the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns toast, followed by various stories and songs written about the poet’s life. Burns Night will conclude with a performance of “Auld Lang Syne” and other Scottish pieces by musician Charlie Zahm. The first Burns Night was first celebrated in 1801, when Burns’ friends gathered five years after his death to honor his memory. Due to Burns’ profound influence on Scottish culture, the tradition was swiftly adopted by communities throughout Scotland and beyond. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation began hosting its rendition of the event six years ago. Due to the event’s popularity and number of guests, the location was moved from Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church in Quarryville to Beale Manor after the first year. The proceeds of Burns Night will benefit the foundation’s multiple restoration projects and ongoing maintenance at the church. “You don’t have to be Scottish to come and enjoy Burns Night,” said event chair Donna McCool. “It’s a unique evening, and we have a lot of fun.” To purchase a ticket for Burns Night, visit http://tinyurl.com /2024burnsnight or call McCool at 610-593-6989.
