Jennersville YMCA Names New Executive Director BY FRANCINE FULTON
“I walked in the door during an exciting time. I’m thrilled to be here,” said Melanie Weiler, who joined the YMCA of Greater Brandywine team in November 2021 as the executive director of the Jennersville YMCA. “2022 is going to a big year for us. We are renovating the facility, building our staff and expanding services.”
Board members of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation include (from left) Jonathan Welch, Donna McCool, Donald Henderson, John Girvin and Dan and Boni Henry.
Burns Night To Celebrate All Things Scottish BY FRANCINE FULTON
urns Night, an evening to recognize the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Historic Beale Manor in Parkesburg. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will host the event. Burns was the national poet of Scotland, and wrote lyrics and songs in both Scots and English. OCC

beef, oatmeal and seasonings. “They call it the pluck of the sheep; it’s the heart, liver and lungs,” explained Donna McCool, foundation treasurer. “Robert Burns wrote a poem (called) ‘Address to a Haggis’ and January is his birthday month so it became a big celebration this time of year. Some people will try (the haggis) because they are (at the event); some people enjoy it.” In addition to the haggis, the homemade supper will include smoked salmon; cock-a-leekie soup, which consist of leeks and peppered chicken broth; neeps and tatties, which is mashed potatoes and turnips; salad; shortbread; and trifle, a layered dessert. Harpist Kendrah Absher will perform during social time and during the supper. After supper, guests will be invited to honor the life of Burns with speeches, readings and toasts. Local musician Charlie Zahm will present “A Tribute to Robert Burns.” Guests will be invited to gather around the piano to sing Burns’ songs, including the classic “Auld Lang Syne,” which will conclude the evening.
After being closed for a number of years, Limeville Christian Preschool, a ministry of Limeville United Methodist Church in Gap, will once again offer classes for children ages 3 to 5. To reintroduce the preschool to the community, an open house event

He is best known for writing the words to “Auld Lang Syne,” which has become associated with New Year’s Eve. Burns Night will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social time featuring piper Thompson McConnell and a welcome by the host. A traditional haggis ceremony will follow, ending with a toast of scotch. Weiler began her career with the YMCA in 1993, serving in several leadership roles throughout the organization, including the Y in the Philadelphia area. “After I left the Philadelphia association, I spent my time between the Kennett branch and the Jennersville branch (before) the theater and the large wellness center (were built in Jennersville). My kids came here for camp and swim lessons and my kids grew up at this branch.” She also worked with other nonprofits throughout Chester County, most notably in the areas of poverty alleviation, food insecurity and homelessness prevention programs. She was the executive director of Kennett Area Community Service from 2013 until 2019 and then served as director of programs and operations and strategic planning at the Chester County Food Bank. “I had heard that there was opening (at the Jennersville YMCA),” she said. “I wanted to get back into the Y system and was waiting for the right opportunity.”

Located at 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, the church was originally constructed in 1752 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. Although it is no longer used for regular services, the historic building is open for special events, including the foundation’s annual Scottish Festival in September. More details about this year’s festival are available at www.covenanter scottishfestival.com. “A lot of people have Scottish or Scotch-Irish roots. The church has Scottish roots (so) fundraisers are Scottish oriented like our festival each year,” McCool noted. She added that while Burns Night is targeted to the Scottish, it is open to people of all nationalities. “(Burns Night) a unique event in this area that can be fun for anyone,” she said. Historic Beale Manor is located at 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg. Burns Night is an adults-only event. Tickets must be purchased by Monday, Jan. 31. For more information and a link to purchase tickets, visit www.face book.com/CovenanterChurch and choose Events or visit www. evenbrite.com and search for “Burns Night at Historic Beale Manor 2022.” Information is also available by contacting McCool at 610-593-6989.
Open House from pg 1 has been scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 27. Attendees will be able to drop in anytime between 6 and 8 p.m. to see the classrooms, learn more about the preschool program and meet Mandee Culp, the new preschool director. Children are welcome to attend the open house with their parents. “We will have paperwork about the school and sample lesson plans,” said Culp. “We will also have a craft for the kids.” Also available will be information about registering for the 2022-23 school year. Classes are scheduled to begin at the preschool in September. Culp explained that the preschool will be located in the church’s newly renovated Sunday school wing. “We will also use other parts of the building. We plan to be outside, and we plan to use the fellowship hall and the sanctuary,” she said. The preschool operated at the church for about 30 years beginning in September of 1974, but it has been closed for more than 15 years. “There seems to be a need now in the area, so (the church) is starting it back up,” Culp noted. Culp has connected with kindergarten teachers in the Pequea Valley School District and plans to talk with teachers from the Octorara Area School District as well to help
develop the curriculum. “We will have a schedule each day,” she explained. “We will teach Bible lessons and everything (the children) need to know for their next steps in life, like letters, numbers, shapes, colors and simple math.” She noted there will be a strong focus on the children’s social and emotional development. Activities will include hands-on experience in music, library skills, gardening and outdoor exploration. “It is important for kids to be outside,” she said. “(In the cold weather) they can bring their gear and we will try to go outside a little bit each day. We also plan on having gardening boxes and play open-ended games in the yard.” Culp is looking forward to the upcoming school year, noting that several families have already registered their children to attend the preschool. “I have worked in early childhood education, in kids’ ministry and in preschools as well for 13 years,” she stated. “I am super excited to … work with local children.” Limeville United Methodist Church is located at 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. For more information about the preschool, email limevillepreschool@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/Limeville ChristianPreschool.

plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.” CEF is an international organization founded in 1937, with an active branch in Lancaster County since 1944. “Our purpose is threefold: to evangelize, disciple, and establish children in a local church,” said Kilgore. Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church God’s Power in Action.” The program has a rotating six-year curriculum.
Volunteers are an integral part of the program. “We try to have one adult for every six children,” said Kilgore, who noted that volunteers are trained to use the curriculum. Kilgore praised helpers who have been part of the program the last two years. “The volunteers who have stuck with us through COVID have been really wonderful,” she said. “The kids have needed to talk more.” She pointed out that volunteering can be rewarding to those who take the opportunity to help guide young lives. “We want to be encouraging to kids and families right now,” she said. “It is a blessing to us to be able to do that.” Kilgore noted that she is grateful for God’s provision over the last few years. “Financially, God has been bringing support,” she said. “He has kept us going in better ways than we could have imagined.” Those who wish to sign a child up for a Good News Club may visit www.ceflancaster.org and click on the registration tab to find the elementary school where their child would attend. Individuals who wish to volunteer may contact CEF through the website or call 717-569-5412.

Officials with the Chester County Health Department (CCHD) have announced the department’s latest testing and vaccination services to help the county’s efforts to control COVID-19. The CCHD has finalized two additional locations for COVID-19 testing providers to establish free test sites, available by appointment around the county. Free PCR testing is now available at the Chester County Government Services Center on Westtown Road in West Chester. Another testing site is available at the Technical College High School - Pennock’s Bridge Campus, 280 Pennock’s Bridge Road, West Grove. Both of these locations are independently operated by the testing company Curative, which will manage test site locations, logistics, and schedules, as well as appointments. Further testing locations are being rolled out across Chester County. Web links to all test sites around Chester County can be found by visiting www.chesco.org/coronavirus and clicking “Testing Information.” In addition to the aforementioned sites, pharmacies and urgent care centers are offering testing. Retail pharmacies such as CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Walmart are administering tests at their locations free of charge. The aforementioned website provides details of the test site locations and opening times, as well as access to appointments. The CCHD is asking community members who have received a positive result from an at-home COVID-19 test to report this result to the health department under the “Testing Information” section of the aforementioned website. CCHD director Jeanne Franklin noted that the submitted at-home test results will be treated as confidential and will not be part of the health department’s data reporting. The CCHD continues to offer vaccine appointments, both primary series (first and second doses) and boosters, for all eligible individuals. Health department vaccine locations are the Government Services Center and the Kennett Fire Company’s Red Clay Room in Kennett Square. Appointments through the CCHD can be made at www.chesco.org/covid19vaccine. Many other COVID-19 vaccine locations throughout the county can be found at www.vaccines.gov.

Jennersville YMCA from pg 1 In her new role as executive director, Weiler is focusing on new programming and overseeing the revitalization of the wellness center, which will include the addition of a Ninja Warrior area. Another change will be an expansion of the Y’s pickleball program. “We are seeing all age groups and families come in (to play),” said Weiler. “It’s a great intergenerational activity. We will be doing some pickleball tournaments this year and expand our pickleball offerings.” Also planned is an expanded use of the YMCA’s theater. “It’s an indoor stage, but the back wall retracts and opens, and you can run it as an outdoor stage,” she said. “We really want to max that out this year.” The Jennersville YMCA also offers a child care and early learning center, summer camps, swim lessons and an array of in-person and virtual group exercise classes for the community. “We do a host of virtual offerings, whether it’s for youths, adults or seniors,” noted Weiler. “We are launching a virtual membership for folks who are hesitant to come back to a facility.” She said that the various YMCA branches work cooperatively with one another to ensure that members have access to all programming. “We are working closer than ever with our sister branches,” she noted. “Under our umbrella is the Octorara Program Center, which is the early learning center that offers before- and afterschool care day camp.” Weiler pointed out that the Jennersville YMCA has become busy again, especially in the cardio room and wellness center. “A lot of people disconnected and lost social connections because of COVID, and this is the perfect time for us to be growing our services back and re-engaging the community,” she said. The Jennersville YMCA is located at 880 W. Baltimore Pike, West Grove. For more information, call 610-8699622 or visit www.ymcagbw.org /locations/jennersville-branch.

Author from pg 4 “Fianna’s Story: A True Story of Love, Grief and Faith,” Bieber presents her grandmother as a devout Brethren woman in the early 1900s. Meyer, at age 10, was among the first people to be baptized in the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, and she retained her faith until her death at age 28. She was survived by her husband and two small children. Meyer also left behind a large packet of letters describing the life of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren and life in her home, as well as her experiences as an early student at Elizabethtown College and as a patient in a tuberculosis sanatorium.
