The aroma of melting chocolate filled Grove United Methodist Church recently as volunteers dipped Oreo cookies in chocolate as part of an annual fundraiser to support Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now). Rise Against Hunter, scheduled for Sunday, March 29, is a yearly event at Grove Church where volunteers pack dried food into packages for distribution to hungry people around the world. “We will pack 27,000 meals (that day). Each of the meals costs 34 cents, so we have to raise $9,000,” explained church member Linda Schneider. As part of the fundraising efforts, more than 20 volunteers gathered in the church’s fellowship hall on Jan. 18 to dip the cookies and top them with sprinkles. Schneider noted that most of the supplies for the day were

Someone said you could smell chocolate in the parking lot,” she said. “We are making 3,600 chocolate-covered Oreos, so we will have 300-some boxes to sell. We package them in boxes of 12 per box, and we sell them for the three Sundays as Valentine’s gifts.” The cookies were sold on Jan. 26, and they will be available on Sundays, Feb. 2 and 9, at the church, where traditional worship services are held at 8 and 9:30 a.m. There is also a contemporary worship service offered at 11 a.m. When asked how the volunteers resisted tasting the chocolate-covered Oreos, Schneider smiled and responded, “Who’s to say that’s not happening?” According to www.riseagainst hunger.org, more than 400,000 volunteers package meals every year. Karla Neff, director of PV elementary advocacy, displays artwork that was created as part of the art club she has started holding at the Together Community Center. The club is just a part of Neff ’s position, which also includes overseeing the Strengthening Families program held at the center. that one of the projects, called a monster mash-up, utilized recycled bottles and egg cartons to make monsters. At the end of the semester, an exhibit of the artwork was held. Neff also oversees the Strengthening Families program, which is a seven-week researchbased program for parents with children ages 10 to 14 funded in part by a Penn Medicine grant. “The program is about showing love and setting limits,” said Neff, who noted that the agenda includes dinner for families and then separate presentations about similar material for children and parents. “It’s a collaborative (effort) working with
social workers and guidance counselors from the school district,” said Neff. The next program will hold its graduation ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 20. Neff is hoping to start a mentorship program to pair students with community members. “That will be the next level of relationship,” she said, noting that plans include a pilot program in the spring. “I am passionate about people feeling cared for,” said Neff. “Those programs are proven to help with success in school, college, career, and in life.” Readers who would like more information about the programs may call 717-687-9594 and ask for Neff.
are designed to be fun, hands-on service projects that are suitable for people of all ages. In an assembly-line fashion, volunteers scoop rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix into small packages. Water can be added to the ingredients, which include 20 essential vitamins and minerals, to create soup and other meals. The food is stored easily, transports quickly and has a shelf life of two years. At Grove Church, more than 100 helpers of all ages will work together on March 29 to scoop, weigh and seal the packages. Community members are invited to participate. Grove United Methodist Church is located at 490 W. Boot

As a member of Grace Point Church, Karla Neff, who became director of PV (Pequea Valley) elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries in August 2019, has been involved with The Factory Ministries most of her life. However, she was not planning to work there when she graduated from Pequea Valley High School in 2013 and began studying early childhood education at Liberty University. During college, Neff spent time doing community development and developing holistic programs in the South Pacific in Fiji. “(I was at) a farm where they taught (people) how to grow things and through that cared for people and had conversations and built relationships,” said Neff, who recognized that The Factory Ministries embraced a similar effort in her own Paradise community. After making that connection, Neff was intrigued. “I have always had a passion for that, so coming back and seeing that happen in my own community was really cool,” said Neff. As part of her degree, Neff served as a student teacher in the West Chester area. She also interned at The Factory Ministries before graduating in 2019. “In my internships, I focused on programming for adults and elementaryage children,” said Neff, who ran a cooking class for students with
guidance on nutrition from Lancaster General Health. During the internship, a conversation began to occur about whether Neff’s work could lead to an advocacy position for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) elementary school students. The conversation involved Tim Rogers, pastor at Grace Point; Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates with The Factory; PVSD superintendent Eric Orndorff; and assistant superintendent Rich Eby. The position the group created utilizes funding from PVSD, Community Action Program, and The Factory Ministries. “It’s a really unique position,” said Neff, who focuses on creating programming and walking alongside elementary learners. As part of the First Ten Initiative, Neff works with children ages 5 to 10. Neff will also work with elementary-age children in families that stay at the Crisis Housing Center, which The Factory recently opened. Neff has already started an art club, which works with 12 students to create artistic items from recycled materials. “Community members come in to help with the relational side of (the club),” she said, explaining that the program assigns firstthrough third-grade students one project and fourth- through sixth-grade students a separate project. “We have different projects each week,” she said, noting

Conservancy Slates Educational Hike Lancaster Conservancy will host a History and Headwaters Hike from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve, 601 Gault Road, New Holland, the largest nature preserve in Lancaster County. Attendees will go behind the scenes of this over-900-acre preserve and explore the restoration area that protects the headwaters of both the Pequea and
Conestoga creeks. Hikers should wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather outdoors. There are no bathrooms at Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve. There is a cost to take part. Should there be a forecast of weather conditions that would make the hike unsafe, hikers will be notified of a cancellation and refunded 24 hours prior to the event. Atglen Library from pg 1 made by the participants. At the first meeting on Jan. 16, children heard the story “Sadie and the Snowman” and then made a melting snowman snack by spreading vanilla frosting like melting snow on a sugar cookie. Library volunteer Jennifer Palmer said that her children enjoyed the new program and take part in many other activities at the Atglen Public Library. “They absolutely love (library programs),” she said. “They cannot wait for me to sign them up for more.” Preregistration for Kid Crafternoon is required so that the library will be aware of any food allergies among the participants. This is a drop-off program, but parents are asked to stay within the library while the children are enjoying the story and activities. Kid Crafternoon is just one of several new programs being offered at the Atglen Public Library this year. “People who hear about (Kid Crafternoon) are very enthusiastic about it,” said library director Robbyn Kehoe, adding that the library hopes to spread the word about its new programs. Also new is the Young Writers Project, which held its first meeting on Jan. 2. The monthly group meets from 5 to 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. An offshoot of the National Novel Writing Month group that met in November, the group is designed to provide inspiration, motivation and encouragement for teenage writers interested in all genres. Teenagers and other students will also enjoy STEM Explorers. The group meets monthly to take on topics in science, technology, engineering and math. On Jan. 22, the group activity centered around Snap Circuits. Future programs will feature 3Doodler 3-D pens
and Makey Makey. An organizational meeting was held on Jan. 28 to kick off Threads, another new group. The group is designed to foster sewing and needle arts knowledge for participants interested in any facet of the subject, from garment construction and embellishment to quilting, costuming and more. Dates and times of future meetings will be announced. Favorite programs continuing into the new year include PAWS for Reading on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 4 to 5 p.m., where children may read to a friendly dog; Kids Book Club on the third Wednesday of the month at 4:15 p.m.; and Adult Book Club on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. The Adult Book Club’s meeting on Feb. 27 will feature a discussion of “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” by Jonas Jonasson. The Crochet Club has changed its name to Tuesday Crafternoon. At the club ’s meetings, participants can socialize while working on handwork of any kind, including crocheting, knitting, embroidery, crewel and handquilting. The group meets on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. There will be a Hot Chocolate Story Time for children of all ages on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Preschool programs Music and Movement and Story Time and Craft will continue through the spring as well. To find a complete schedule of new and returning programs, readers may visit www.atglenpubliclibrary.org or www.facebook.com/AtglenPublic Library or call the library at 610-593-6848. Richard Wortmann, clerk of the board of directors, has announced that veteran health care administrator Lisa Marsilio has been selected as the new CEO of Kendal-Crosslands Communities (KCC). Marsilio’s first day at KCC was Jan. 21. Marsilio has extensive experience leading health care organizations. From 2015 to 2019, she served as COO of Caron Treatment Centers, a nationally known, not-for-profit provider of addiction and behavioral health care. During her tenure, she streamlined the admissions and intake process, analyzed fiscal efficiency, championed ethical marketing practices, expanded research programs, and promoted the use of outcomes-based treatment. Marsilio’s experience also includes three years as CEO/exec-
utive director of a post-acute care network created to serve the University of Pennsylvania Health System and six years as a vice president and administrator with the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network in Allentown and Bethlehem. Marsilio also served for six years as an adjunct faculty member of the Wescoe School of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, teaching courses on health care delivery systems, regulatory compliance, and marketing. She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Muhlenberg College and master’s degree in business administration from DeSales University. Marsilio succeeds Phil DeBaun, now CEO at Foulkeways at Gwyneed, a life care community in suburban Philadelphia. Kendal-Crosslands Communi-
ties is a member of the Kendal System, which is an affiliation of independent senior living organizations connected by a set of common values and principles operated in accordance with Quaker principles.

for renting apartments. The information is sealed in our office, but it can get out by other means.” The types of records that will be expunged for first-time offenders who successfully completed a diversion program include misdemeanors such as criminal mischief, criminal trespass or disorderly conduct. It is estimated that this new service will lead to 100 to 150 additional expungements per year, but the system being put in place means the new service will be absorbed within the existing responsibilities of the Clerk of Courts Office and the other offices. No more staff members will be added. Prior to formally filing an expungement motion of an 18year-old to the court, the Juvenile Probation Office will determine eligibility and provide the motion to the District Attorney’s Office. If there is no objection, the order will then be submitted to the court for consideration. If the court approves the expungement, the Clerk of Courts Office will
send a certified copy of the expungement order to all agencies having been involved with the juvenile. Similar to the county’s statewide Clean Slate program that seals but does not expunge records, this expungement service for non-adjudicated juveniles will not require any action by the juvenile to initiate the process and will not include follow-up correspondence to juveniles whose records have been expunged. Pictured on front: Yolanda Van de Krol (left), Chester County clerk of courts; Renee Merion (middle), deputy district attorney in charge of the Juvenile Unit; and Don Corry, Chester County chief juvenile probation officer, have announced a new service through which any juveniles who successfully complete a diversion program will have their record expunged when they turn 18 years old, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

Fresh Start from pg 1 Through a new service offered by the Chester County court system, any juveniles who successfully complete a diversion program will have their record expunged when they turn 18 years old, provided they meet eligibility requirements. The move is the result of recommendations by Chester County’s Juvenile Probation Office and is made in consultation and cooperation with the Chester County Clerk of Courts Office, District Attorney’s Office and Chester County Courts. This Chester County service applies to all eligible juveniles who turned 18 on or after Aug. 1, 2019. “Currently, juveniles who complete a diversion program can initiate the expungement process after six months have passed since their supervision ended if they have remained out of the criminal justice system,” said Yolanda Van de Krol, Chester County’s clerk of courts. “Most juveniles don’t take this action and then find that information on their non-adjudicated record may impact applications for college, for jobs or even
John Lewis and Joan Baez. Somerstein also took photographs of his fellow demonstrators, as well as the anonymous bystanders who had gathered along the route. “Witness to History: Selma Photography of Stephen Somerstein” is guest curated by Farrah Spott and will be on view from Feb. 1 to Sunday, June 14. The Brandywine River Museum of Art is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford. The GPS address is 1 Hoffman’s Mill Road, Chadds Ford. An admission fee is charged. There is a discount for seniors age 65 and over, students and children age 6 and up. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. Reduced admission is offered in the month of January. The museum is open Wednesdays through Mondays and is closed on Tuesdays. Current hours of operation can be found at www.brandywine.org/hours or by calling 610-388-2700.

grams, including lectures, music and theatrical performances, gallery talks and more. A related Speaker Series and Summit will focus on historic and contemporary women’s issues. More information about the exhibit and the list of special programs can be found at www.brandywine.org/ museum/exhibitions/votes -women-visual-history. A concurrent exhibition, “Witness to History: Selma Photography of Stephen Somerstein,” will explore the historic 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., which was a turning point in the civil rights movement that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. The exhibition will include 55 of the photographs taken by Stephen Somerstein on March 25, 1965, when he was 24 years old. With five cameras around his neck and only 15 rolls of film, Somerstein documented this moment in history, capturing photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other prominent activists such as Rosa Parks, James Baldwin, Bayard Rustin,

ings, illustrations and posters from museums, historical societies and private collections. Also included will be early film footage, as well as historic photographs and banners from rallies and marches, including the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Procession in Washington, D.C. Examples of the costumes, clothing, sashes and other emblems of women’s activism worn by suffragists will be included in the presentation. As a way to recognize women of color who were part of the suffrage movement, the Brandywine has commissioned a diverse group of women artists to create a mural of illustrated portraits of some of the women who had a role in winning voting rights. The mural will include portraits of 14 local and national figures with accompanying biographies. The commissioned works will be completed in a variety of media and styles by various artists. In conjunction with “Votes for Women: A Visual History,” the themes of the exhibition will be explored in a series of public pro-

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, the Brandywine River Museum of Art will present “Votes for Women: A Visual History,” an exhibition that explores the women’s suffrage movement. The exhibit will be on view from Saturday, Feb. 1, through Sunday, June 7. The long road to women’s suffrage, spanning the 19th and early 20th centuries, was very different from political movements today. Instead of using televised messages and digital media, the suffragists spread their message through magazines, political cartoons, posters, plays, parades and even fashion. Focusing on the decade prior to ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, the exhibition examines the imagery of the suffrage movement. Organized by the Brandywine and curated by Amanda C. Burdan, Ph.D., “Votes for Women: A Visual History” will feature more than 200 artifacts from the suffrage movement, including draw-

Orphie from pg 1 and hear groundhog-sighting reports from a half-dozen observation squads that have spent the early morning searching for the burrows of Marmota monax, also called woodchuck. The Hibernating Governor will announce this year’s forecast from the Pinnacle of Prognostication. Defender of the Faith Stuart J. Mylin will give remarks, and lodge members accompanied by the Groundhog Marching Band will demonstrate the Groundhog Jig. But wait - there’s more. The Baby Class of 2020 will embark on an odyssey into the world of Arctomanciferial Predictification during the celebration. The inductees will willingly dress as stereotypical infants and undergo a Baptism by Fire and Water. They will submit one of their class members to a dunking in the Octorara
Creek, and all of them will bend over as a cannon is fired over their hindmost parts. Spoiler alert: The cannon only goes boom; it does not launch a heavy projectile over the adult babies. This year’s Baby Class includes Richard Benner of Lancaster, Kevin Broderick of Kirkwood, Joel Neff of New Providence, Shane Snyder of Willow Street, and Brian Stoltzfus of Quarryville. If readers are enticed to stand out in the cold - and possibly rain or snow - and watch adult men have serious fun, they may do so free of charge. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. Malvern Bank, National Association, the wholly owned subsidiary of Malvern Bancorp Inc., donated 284 pounds of food to the West Chester Food Cupboard. The donation was the result of the bank’s winter food drive, during which the bank’s customers and employees donated nonperishable food items at Malvern’s branch offices from Nov. 15 to Dec. 20, 2019. Displaying the donations were (from left) Malvern Bank president Anthony C. Weagley, chief financial officer Joseph Gangemi, and chief risk officer William Woolworth. In addition, Malvern presented a check for $518 to the West Chester Food Cupboard, representing the value of the food donated plus proceeds from the bank’s #GivingTuesday Facebook promotion, in which the bank donated $1 for every Facebook “like” or “share” on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3.

will include land use, stream ecology, groundwater, wetlands, wildlife, geology, invasive plants and stormwater management. Master Watershed Stewards take part in various projects, such as planting trees, hosting stream and trash cleanups and organizing community walks. Some of the events are held in conjunction with local watershed associations. “There are options for whatever interests the volunteer. Some people like to go out to festivals and talk to homeowners,” said Hopkins-Doerr. “Others like to take care of stream monitoring devices. They go out and clean them and maintain them and check them for trends.” Some volunteers will wade in the water to collect creatures that live in the streams. “(Stewards) collect macroinvertebrates (bugs), which are an indicator of a healthy stream,” said HopkinsDoerr. “They are sensitive to pollution. If there is (excess) sediment or chlorine, they will show it.” Volunteers also have an opportunity to participate in stream restoration. “Stream restoration work could be putting in live stakes. These are branch cuttings from certain trees that if you put them in the ground, they will root and stabilize the stream bank,” said Hopkins-Doerr. Finally, volunteers educate adults and children about the environment. “(Stewards) give presentations to the public,” Hopkins-Doerr noted. “It can be at a school, at libraries and for different groups that reach out requesting a presentation.” Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all events. “The background doesn’t matter - we have teachers, engineers, someone who works in transportation and retirees. It runs the gamut,” Hopkins-Doerr said. The Master Watershed Steward Program is offered in both Chester and Delaware counties. “We have more of an agriculture focus in Chester County,” Hopkins-Doerr noted. “In Delaware County, we focus on urban stormwater issues.” Hopkins-Doerr encourages all those interested in the program to attend one of the upcoming information sessions. Attendees are not obligated to apply for the program. “(Volunteering) is fun, plus you are making a difference,” she stated. For more information, readers may contact Hopkins-Doerr at 610-696-3500 or mxh1135@ psu.edu or visit www.extension .psu.edu/programs/watershed -stewards/counties/chester -delaware.

Combining his love of storytelling, his real-life experiences as a firefighter and his unusual last name, Steve Dragon, the public information officer for the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, recently published his first children’s book, “Were You Born a Dragon?” Dragon explained that the book is based on stories that he told his daughter, Rachel, while she was growing up. With the encouragement of his wife and Rachel, who is now a special education teacher at the LancasterLebanon Intermediate Unit, Dragon wrote the book in June of 2019. It was published in December. “Thirty years ago I started telling my daughter about how I could turn into a dragon and we could fly off into the Land of Dragons for an adventure,” he said. “My daughter believed the stories as much as she believed in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. “(Rachel) was telling her students about how she is a dragon and about the Land of Dragons. She called me and told me that her students didn’t believe her, so (she told me it was time to write the book),” he continued. “I borrowed pictures from the internet and made a pamphlet. She took it to school and read it to her students.” It took Dragon only a few days to write the book. “I had it in my brain for 30 years,” he said, noting that the story is based on the real-life bond between Rachel and her older brother, Steven. After investigating several different self-publishing sites on the internet, Dragon chose Book Baby to publish the book, which is illustrated by Catherine McMahon. “I told her what I wanted, and she came up with absolutely beautiful illustrations,” he said. “Were You Born a Dragon?” tells the story of Steven and his father, who take Steven’s sister, Rachel, to the Land of Dragons. There, they must receive the blessing of the King of Dragons so that they can raise her to be a dragon. But first, they must get past Arnod, the Chief Security Dragon, who does not like children. Like in real life, Steven protects Rachel on her journey. In the book, Dragon, who has been a fire company volunteer for 32 years, mentions his mother and his father, who was also a volunteer firefighter. The book also and makes references to firefighting, and the King of Dragons says that Rachel will become a teacher. “I tried to incorporate some truth into the fiction,” Dragon stated. Dragon already has plans to continue the story through future books. Book two is already underway and in the hands of the illustrator. “This story is about standing up to a bully and about brotherly and sisterly love,” Dragon said. “For book two, we go back to the Land of Dragons. My son is taken away to start his education to become a dragon. He wants to go and have fun (instead), but he finds out that learning can be fun. So
Steve Dragon, the public information officer for the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, recently published his first children’s book, “Were You Born a Dragon?” the theme of book two is education.” Dragon added that the third book is currently in outline form. Dragon said that his last name is Polish, and it was not changed when his ancestors came to America. “Years ago, Ancestry.com had a free weekend and I found my grandfather’s name on the ship’s registry when he left from Germany,” Dragon said. “My dad gave me a great name. It is a great name for a firefighter.” On the book’s cover, it states, “A story by Steve Dragon (really!).” He said that this mention is in response to people who ask, “Dragon - is that really your last name?” to which he replies, “Yes, really.” Dragon said that writing the book has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “There are so many things in life that we want to do, and we never accomplish them,” he said. “I did this, which is what makes me feel the best.” For more information about the book, readers may search for “Were You Born a Dragon?” on Facebook.
