Octorara School Board Members Recognized responses from students who were asked what they thought school board members do. The responses were accurate in many ways, directly or indirectly. Young students thought the board members help teachers, pay the bills, clean the schools and make the buses safe. Some of them gave the board members credit for other jobs such as changing the letters on the school district sign board, stopping in after work to check on the buildings and watching the students all day. “Some of (the responses) are spot-on and very insightful,” Fox said. “It’s great to hear what they thought we do. 90-Year-Old Keeps Active With Aerobics Volunteers Fill Backpacks By Marcella Peyre-Ferry On MLK Day Of Service Julian “Toots” Beltz of Cochranville turned 90 on Jan. 19, but there was an early surprise birthday celebration for her on Jan. 17 at her aerobics class. Twice each week, Toots is one of the first students to arrive at the East Fallowfield Township Municipal Building for the class, as she has for the past 37 years. A lifelong resident of the Cochranville area, Toots grew up on her family’s 179-acre farm, where she picked crops, milked cows and did other chores. “I worked right out with my brother and dad,” she said. “I think what gives her her strength and determination (is that) she was a farm girl and she was always outside working,” daughter-in-law Linda Beltz noted. The grant was presented by Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell. The OIC plans to renovate the space to accommodate all of its programs, which include a GED testing center, English as a Second Language classes, Certified Nurse Assistant training and the SOAR Reentry program, which offers services to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who have been involved in the criminal justice system. Funding for these programs is provided by grants from the Department of Labor and Pennsylvania Department of Education. During the ceremony, Chester honored the pioneer responsible for founding the OIC Centers of America in Philadelphia in 1964. “Sometimes when you have a dream, it takes a village to make it come true,” she stated. “Today we celebrate a dream come true when a consummate dreamer made a significant impact on America and the world. I’m talking about a Baptist minister, a civil rights and social activist - the Rev. Dr. Leon Sullivan - who focused on the creation of job training opportunities for African-Americans, the poor and the disenfranchised.” She noted that Sullivan was a mentor of Martin Luther King Jr. “What better day to dedicate this building?” she asked those in attendance at the ceremony, which was
held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “Thanks to all of you here today that are sharing in this momentous occasion in our history.” Chester thanked all those who made the move possible, including state Sen. Andy Dinniman; the OIC board of directors, led by Gary Hess, board chair; Coatesville Area Senior Center, including executive director Bill Pierce; OIC of America, the parent affiliate of the Chester County chapter; and OIC staff members. “They rolled up their sleeves, cleaned floors and walls and bathrooms and were wonderful in making this our new home,” Chester said. She also credited members of the Coatesville City Council, who voted to approve the opening; the West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club, which helped with the move; the Coatesville Police Department; the West Chester Area School District and Calvary Lutheran Church, both

Gonzalez, Holmes Graduate From Police Academy lieutenants to offer additional encouragement. Holmes said the seeds of the plan date back to March 2014 when she began working in the Sheriff’s Office. A longtime friend who was working as a deputy immediately suggested that Holmes attend the police academy, but at the time, the single mother said her plate was full. In addition to caring for her two sons, Holmes was providing assistance to her father, who was seriously ill. But Holmes, a Coatesville High School graduate who studied criminal justice at West Chester University, said her friend’s urgings did not stop. When a colleague in the Sheriff’s Office security force enrolled in the academy in 2017, Holmes regularly asked him questions about his experiences in the program. The answers helped Holmes make up her mind in the summer of 2018, secure in the knowledge that she would be fulfilling a wish for her that her late father had often expressed. At the time, she did not know that Gonzalez once had the same ambition. Gonzalez said that hearing Holmes announce her goal reignited her own aspirations. Gonzalez said that the Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh (center) joins Marthought of having company at the jorie V. Gonzalez (left) and Deborah A. Holmes at the pair’s gradua- academy appealed to her. tion from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy. Welsh said one of the most inspiring Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy. If they pursued the parttime program, they could continue as security officers during the yearlong curriculum. At the end, they would graduate with Act 120 certification, which is mandated by Pennsylvania to work as a police officer. The certification was the lone requirement preventing the two from moving up the ranks and becoming deputy sheriffs. Welsh encouraged Gonzalez and Holmes and brought in the chief and
components of Holmes and Gonzalez’s journey was the pair’s teamwork, and the duo’s commitment, perseverance, and dedication inspired others in the office. Welsh added that the training regimen produced a variety of obstacles. Both Holmes and Gonzalez found the schedule grueling. After putting in a full day at the Chester County Justice Center, they fought rush-hour traffic, often just making it to the Delaware County campus in time for roll call at 5:45 p.m. Their classes took place from 6 to 10 p.m. Holmes said she arrived back home in time to put her sons to bed. Additionally, Holmes also experienced difficulty with the schedule during the firearms training, as participants had to add full Saturdays and Sundays to their schedules for six weeks. For Gonzalez, a Navy veteran who joined the Sheriff’s Office in April 2011, the physical training and the firearms instruction presented the biggest hurdles. She noted that she and Holmes were the oldest members of their class, and sometimes keeping up with younger classmates proved a bit intimidating. In addition, Gonzalez, who grew up in Delaware County and attended Haverford High School and Millersville State College, had to call up distant memories. For
example, she had not used a firearm in more than three decades. Besides receiving periodic boosts from one another as well as colleagues in the Sheriff’s Office, both cadets benefited from personal support systems. Holmes credited her mother and sons, and Gonzalez praised her pastor and members of her church, Saints Memorial Baptist Church in Bryn Mawr. When graduation time approached, Gonzalez and Holmes learned that if they

that plan for the future of the school district, learn about the issues affecting public education and serve as advocates to government representatives. “We’re invested in our community,” Bowman said. Most of the board members had prior experience with the district as parents or volunteers before they ran for election to the board. “Before any of us were school board directors, we were all school volunteers. It’s an extension of the volunteer effort for the school,” Fox said. “It’s good to see the impact on kids.” One of the most important jobs of the board in the past year was the hiring of new superintendent Michele Orner. “It’s rewarding to see the process. We hired Dr. Orner and participated in that. It was a good learning experience,” Koennecker said. Board members said that one of the most rewarding parts of the job comes at the end of the school year when they participate in graduation ceremonies. “When you get to go to graduation and see all the families and how excited they are with their kids, I think that’s one of the high points of the year,” Bowman said. The Octorara Area Board of School Directors meets in the multipurpose room at the Octorara Junior High School. The board normally holds its monthly work session meetings at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month (with the exception of July and December). The regular meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month (with the exception of July and December). There is no work session held the month of July. Conservancy Receives Hershey-Okan Acquisition Grant 569-acre natural area to be transferred to and managed by the Oxford Area Foundation (OAF). OAF will manage it as a passive preserve with 5 miles of trails mostly along the Octoraro Creek. Once completed, the project will help create 6,739 acres of contiguous preserved lands in the Octoraro watershed, according to director Ellen Ferretti. The Brandywine Conservancy also assisted the landowner in applying for and securing agricultural preservation funding to preserve the 220 acres of farmland on the property. The Brandywine Conservancy is seeking additional funds to meet the acquisition price, with a desired completion by 2021 for the remaining lands in Chester County and an additional 156 acres of farmland along the Octoraro Creek in Lancaster County.

The Brandywine Conservancy has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to be used toward the acquisition of a 569-acre natural area along the Octoraro Creek in Lower Oxford and West Nottingham townships in Chester County. The area is a portion of the 952-acre Glenroy Farm property that spans Chester and Lancaster counties. The Conservancy’s ultimate goal is to work with the landowner to permanently protect the entire property through purchase and agricultural easements. The $1.5 million from DCNR will be used to match an already approved multi-year $3 million grant from the Chester County Preservation Partnership Program. Eventually, the goal is for the

Meal-Packing Event from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Exton will partner with Church Farm School (CFS) students and staff members to package meals for Rise Against Hunger on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The packaging event will be held in the school’s Founder’s Pavilion on Church Farm Lane, located next to St. Paul’s. The goal of the program is for 200 volunteers, working in shifts, to package 100,000 meals. Community members are invited to participate. According to the Rev. Maxine Dornemann, St. Paul’s pastor, this is the second time that the church has joined CFS to hold a mealpacking event. The first event took place in the spring of 2018 in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of CFS, which is a private boarding and day school for boys in Exton. “Last spring, they did 100,000 meals for their 100th anniversary. It was so well-received, and people had such a good time and felt so good about it,” Dornemann said.
The completed meals will be shipped to Rise Against Hunger’s international partners and distributed to those in need. “Each individual added to the bag in an assembly line,” Dornemann explained. “(Each bag contained) rice, dried vegetables and (other ingredients). When it’s sent out to places where it’s needed, they add water.” In addition to CFS and St. Paul’s, other area churches are supporting the event through financial donations to purchase the meals, along with manpower to package them, including Bryn Mawr’s Church of the Redeemer, St. David’s Episcopal Church in Wayne, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Wayne, St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley in Malvern and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Exton, where CFS’ founder once served as rector. In addition to the Rise Against Hunger event, St. Paul’s is hosting several ongoing programs that are open to the public. St. Paul’s offers a quiet and meditative Celtic service on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. “It’s based on ancient prayers, and it has a lot of quiet in it and it is done by candlelight,”
Dornemann explained. She added that there is no traditional sermon, but a brief reflection is offered by a lay person near the beginning of the service. She said that the service has been well received not only by St. Paul’s parishioners, but by people from other churches in the area, as well as those with little or no religious background. All are welcome to attend the Celtic service and to receive Holy Communion. Refreshments are served after the service in the church’s Getman Hall. St. Paul’s men’s Bible study meets on the first and third Saturdays of the month at 7:30 a.m. Each meeting starts with breakfast. Throughout the year, the group also holds SPUDS gatherings, which stands for St. Paul’s Uniting Dads Socially. The goal is to provide opportunities for dads and other men to gather socially for fun fellowship, as well as alternate Bible study and activities. The church’s monthly book club meets on the last Monday of the month at 7 p.m. The purpose of the group is for fellow Christians to share their thoughts and beliefs about books written by various authors.
Finally, the church offers a Frizzled Hens group that provides fellowship and support to mothers with children from infants through age 5. The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. “It’s a group of moms that get together for a night out,” Dornemann said. “They share stories and arrange playdates. We have some new moms who are able ask questions of the older moms. It’s a support group and social group at the same time.” St. Paul’s is located at 1105 E. Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), Exton. For more information about any of the events listed, readers may call St. Paul’s at 610363-2363 or visit www.stpauls exton.com. Pictured on front:

Toots, whose husband passed away in 2011, stayed with the classes, attending mornings and afternoons every Tuesday and Thursday. “It does me so much good,” she said. “When I was kind of down and blue when I was caring for him, or the same way now when I get feeling a little depressed or something, I come up here and I feel like a different person.” The location of the classes has a special connection for Toots, since the building was once a school that she attended and graduated from. Toots still does her own gardening and cooking, plus she enjoys word search puzzles and
she swims for exercise in the summer months. “I think a lot of her longevity comes from eating natural foods - things that are in season and not processed,” Shelly said. “She never quits,” aerobics teacher Laurie Harman said. “She’s usually the first one here (for class) every morning. She’s an inspiration for all of us.” Toots also enjoys the social aspect of the classes. “The ladies are all very nice friends,” she said. Toots has cut back to just morning classes two times a week instead of four, but she does not plan to stop exercising. “I thought a little bit about quitting when I’m 90, and I thought, ‘Why am I going to do that?’” she said. “I feel like a different person after I (exercise) here.”

When her own children were in school in the 1960s and ’70s, Toots started working in the cafeterias of the high school, middle school and elementary schools in the Octorara Area School District, using her own recipes. When the district moved to using food services, she changed to factory work on the night shift. Toots’ interest in aerobics began when her husband, James, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and she became his caregiver. Her family realized she needed to care for herself as well. “My daughter and daughter-inlaw said, ‘Mom, you have to have an outlet,’” Toots said. The volunteers who worked at the center throughout the day included representatives from the Brandywine Health Foundation, the Coatesville Rotary Club, Coatesville Cub Scout Pack 134, students and staff members from area high schools, members of local churches and others. Together, the volunteers packed more than 230 backpacks. “ We were blessed with an excellent attendance; there were 107 volunteers in four shifts,” explained Minnie McNeil from Coatesville First Seventh-day Adventist Church. “We staged the volunteers throughout the day in two-hour shifts. “We were excited about the number of community members, including shelter residents, that volunteered,” McNeil continued. “We also welcomed volunteers from a wide region, including Philadelphia and the Main Line. U.S. Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan, her spouse and staff came right in the door ready to work.” The volunteers worked in various areas on two floors of the center, including prep and staging; packing the backpacks; counting and boxing; and distributing. Items in the boxes, which were donated through community drives, included shampoo, body wash, soap, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes and
toothpaste, as well as two pairs of socks, washcloths, a bottle of water, pens and other writing materials. “ We also included resource information, which was very important,” McNeil said, noting that the materials contained information about local service providers. The backpacks were given out at shelters in Coatesville, including the Atkinson Center, City Gate Mission and Community, Youth, and Women’s Alliance (CYWA). McNeil pointed out that backpacks were also scheduled to be given to homeless individuals not at the shelters. However, she noted, there were no men or women visible on the street that appeared to be homeless. Additional backpacks were given to the Department of Community Development to distribute as needed. McNeil said that one volunteer from Philadelphia arrived close to the end of the event because he wanted to complete a volunteer activity before the end of the day. “We were pleased to provide him with 15 backpacks that he will give homeless individuals that often approach his car at traffic lights,” she noted. “He was absolutely delighted, as we were to expand our reach on the day of service.” During the event, pastor Eric Robertson from Forward Impact
Volunteers gathered at the W.C. Atkinson Memorial Community Service Center on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to pack backpacks full of personal care products and supplies that were delivered to residents of area homeless shelters. Ministries provided an overview of the origin and purpose of MLK Day of Service and a prayer of blessing for the recipient of each bag. McNeil said the event would not have been possible without the cooperation and partnership between the Atkinson Center and a wealth of community members, organizations, clubs and members of the faith community.

Farm Financial Management Course Set Penn State Extension will offer Farm$en$e, a farm financial management course for business owners, agricultural producers, and all folks interested in gaining the knowledge to build, and better understand, financial statements. The four-session, adult professional development course will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Feb. 4, 11, and 25 and March 4. All four classes will be held at the Penn State Extension Cumberland County Office, 310 Allen Road, Carlisle. The course teaches people how to assemble and understand the key farm business financial statements, such as the statement of cash flows, the balance sheet, and the income statement. Course participants will learn how to use financial records to calculate benchmarks and make informed managerial decisions for the business. These skills may help to strengthen the farm business and improve relationships with business partners. Representatives of all agricultural businesses are welcome to attend, including livestock, dairy, horticulture, landscape and nursery, orchard growers, greenhouse operators, and vegetable operations. Also, diversified farms producing multiple items can benefit from the course. Class participants will receive faceto-face, one-on-one, and hands-on business training from acclaimed and experienced Penn State University Extension agriculture business educators. Participants will create their own custom farm financial statements. Extension Plans Workshop Penn State Extension will offer a workshop on running for local government positions. The workshop, “Toss Your Hat in the Ring,” will take place on Monday, Feb. 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Chester County Government Services Building, 601 Westtown Road, West Chester. The workshop will include an overview of Pennsylvania local government and the responsibilities of a township supervisor, a borough council member, or a school board director, along with instructions on how to run,
including filing a petition, reporting campaign expenses, and other important information. A panel of local officials will talk about why they decided to run for office and some of their experiences since they were elected. The workshop will not offer campaign tips or strategies, but rather it will focus on understanding the roles, responsibilities, and personal rewards that come with public service. There is a registration fee. Registration is
available at https://extension.psu.edu/toss -your-hat. For more information, readers may contact Peter Wulfhorst of Penn State Extension at 570-296-3400. In the case of inclement weather, readers should check local radio or television stations for cancellations. The snow date will be Monday, Feb. 11. Individuals who anticipate needing any type of accommodation or who have questions about the physical access provided may call the Penn State Extension office at 610-696-3500.
