WFCS To Host First STEAM Event By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will hold its first STEAM event on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, and all fields will be represented at the event. The community is invited to view numerous interactive, hands-on displays presented by the school and supporters. The free event is designed to appeal to youngsters from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families, and it should interest students from all schools, as well as WFCS students. The entire middle school staff from WFCS is involved in planning and implementing the event, including the English and social studies departments. The Academy high school-level students will also be involved as presenters.

The idea for the event was generated by language arts department teacher Mark Fiscus, who is involved with the Envirothon competition and Nature Club at WFCS. He saw a similar presentation at a public school and was impressed by the presentations and by the enjoyable atmosphere provided for the community. “It was a great evening. I really enjoyed going around looking at all the different tables and seeing what people were doing,” Fiscus said. “I presented it to the teachers here, and there was an enthu- West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) middle school students in the STEM siastic response.” Club, including (from left) Daniel Keane, Rodney Lusby, Evan Byerley, Jackson At least 20 stations will be set up Leaman, Ryen Ammon, Michael Harding, Conor Keane and Sofia Stoltzfus, work in the multipurpose and art rooms, on using tin foil and AA batteries to create a circuit to light a bulb in preparation where visitors can walk to the dif- for the school’s first STEAM event on Feb. 12. ferent tables and participate. “The whole idea is these can be hands-on actually participate,” Fiscus said. “The project where people come in and enjoy presentations. United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free. United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. Last year, United Way of Lancaster County’s IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 10,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns. VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts. VITA provides free tax preparation services, including federal, state and local returns, to taxpayers who make less than $62,000

and who live, work or go to school in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Friday, Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible. The county’s VITA sites began opening on Jan. 22. Sites include Community Action Partnership,

Adult Probation Department in 2012. Kebbekus was eager to explore another aspect of law enforcement, and he credits his family with supporting his decision to attend Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy. After his graduation in 2017, he left Adult Probation and joined the Darby Township Police Department. When he is not working, Kebbekus enjoys traveling, camping, and working out. William Merola took a somewhat circuitous route to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office. He attended Upper Darby High, where Welsh appears on the school’s Wall of Fame, and he majored in leisure/sports studies at Kutztown University and began working in retail. In 2015, several police officers urged him to attend Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy. He graduated in 2015 and began working for the Aldan Borough Police Department and later the Delaware County Sheriff ’s Office, where he sometimes saw a copy of Welsh’s Wall of Fame photo at the Delaware County courthouse. When he heard about an opening in her office, he was eager to apply. The bulk of his spare time goes to family activities. Maura McMahon, a Montgomery County native, grew up surrounded by people involved in law enforcement - especially her father, who works as a defense attorney. She earned a degree in science from James Madison University in Virginia and interned in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office before enrolling in Montgomery County Community College’s Police Academy. She graduated in 2017 and accepted a job as a police officer with the Western Berks Regional Police Department. from the Schuylkill Township Police Department. She has worked with Scent Evidence and a nonprofit called Public Safety Dogs Inc., which rescues dogs and trains them to assist agencies with locating missing persons. In her spare time, she enjoys making candles for a business she created. For Jeffrey Hagan, who attended Bayard Rustin High School, a job in the Sheriff ’s Office represents a homecoming of sorts: He was an intern in the office this past summer. Inspired in part by an uncle who spent 20 years with the Philadelphia Police Department, Hagan majored in criminology at Penn State University. He graduated from Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in December 2018. Hagan participates in a baseball league for adults and plays ice hockey. Brian Jefferson, a native of North Wales, planned a career in automotive technology, receiving training at A. Philip Randolph Career Academy in Philadelphia and the Automotive Training Center in Warminster. He shifted gears after being laid off from a job. Inspired by relatives and television shows, he attended Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy, graduating in 2011; he also joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Jefferson comes to the Sheriff ’s Office from the Darby Borough Police Department, where he earned special recognition for rescuing a suicidal subject. In his spare time, he enjoys working out and spending time with his family. Edward Kebbekus is another familiar face to many who frequent the Chester County Justice Center. A native of New Jersey, he attended West Chester University, majoring in criminal justice. He subsequently worked at the George W. Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh swore in 10 new deputies in January. The group of new deputies achieved a number of firsts, including its size, varied backgrounds, and gender composition: five males and five females. Laniece Edmondson, a Philadelphia native, graduated from the Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in June 2017. Her career choice was inspired by her mother, a 30year Philadelphia police officer. Edmondson comes to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office from the Darby Borough Police Department, where she assisted with the training of new officers. When she is not working, she is likely to be found somewhere outside or at the gym. She enjoys a host of outdoor pursuits, especially hiking and kayaking. Marjorie Gonzalez and Deborah Holmes were also sworn in. The pair became friends while working as security officers for the Sheriff’s Office and discovered they both aspired to become deputies. To obtain the required Act 120 certification, they enrolled in Delaware County Community College’s yearlong, part-time Police Academy program, enabling them to continue their day jobs. Holmes is a Coatesville High graduate who studied criminal justice at West Chester University. Gonzalez is a Navy veteran who grew up in Delaware County and attended Haverford High School and Millersville State College. Melissa Harrington grew up in an Air Force family and studied broadcast journalism at Hartwick College. After earning her degree, she worked for a variety of shows, but she ultimately went in a different direction, pursuing a career in law enforcement. Harrington graduated from Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in 2017 and comes to the Sheriff’s Office

“Last year turned out to be even bigger than we thought it would be,” said Lancaster Celtic Arts Foundation president Esther Pujols, reflecting on the Rose & Shamrock Festival, which she chaired for the first time last year. “We had more than 2,500 attendees. People from 20 different states and Canada competed, but we had people come all the way from Ohio to attend the festival and see the bands.” Pujols was pleased with the community response, noting that as a result of the high turnout, improvements have been made to the layout for this year’s festival, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 15; Saturday, Feb. 16; and Sunday, Feb. 17, in downtown Lancaster city. Much of the event will take place at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott, but Tellus360, Annie Bailey’s Public House, and The Meduseld Meadery will also host festival components. “We outgrew the Marriott,” Pujols said. “We want to move in the direction of (even) more venues next year, similar to Lancaster Roots and Blues. We’re assuming people will get out and about. People on social media seem excited about getting to the other venues (that we have announced).” In the Marriott itself, the number of stages devoted to bands has been increased to two. Additionally, both the performance by

the Rehoboth Welsh Choir and the bagpiping competition sanctioned by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association have been moved to larger spaces with more seating. “The organizers were shocked that people came to watch (the bagpipers),” Pujols said, explaining that piping competitions tend to be attended primarily by the musicians, but the interest of spectators was a welcome surprise. In addition to piping, competitions will include Irish music, Irish dancing, Irish baking, and Celtic art. Pujols said that as of Jan. 30, almost 700 dancers have entered, and more are expected to register by the deadline of Saturday, Feb. 9. The feis is governed and sanctioned by An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (the Irish Dancing Commission), the North American Feis Commission, and the Mid-Atlantic Region. “ We offer every level (of dance),” Pujols said. She noted that competitors range in age from single digits to 60s. “(Some of these dancers) are the caliber that are being scouted for Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. People don’t realize there are these super-talented kids (and young adults) right under their noses,” she added. Admission to the festival will be free of charge, thanks to sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Thanks to an anonymous donor, $600 will be divided among the winners of the youth division of the Irish

Symphony Plans Youth Concert The Immaculata Symphony will hold its annual youth concert, themed “Cosmic Classics,” on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. in Alumnae Hall on the campus of Immaculata University, 1145 King Road. The symphony is a university/ community organization that goes back to the Immaculata’s founding in 1920. Conducted by Joseph Gehring, the symphony will explore how composers throughout time wrote music inspired by space. The concert will open with the Strauss fanfare made famous by the film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Other

highlights include performances of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Overture to “The World on the Moon,” Gustav Holst’s “Mars” from “The Planets,” Luke Flynn’s “Rift,” and John Williams’ “Star Wars” theme. After the performance, children will be invited on stage to meet the musicians and to see and hear the instruments up close. A cost for the concert has been set for adults, with children under 12 admitted free. Seating is available on a first-come, firstserved basis. More information and tickets are available at www.immaculatasymphony.org.

STEAM Event from pg 1 In addition to the interactive stations, five eighth-grade students who will be taking their science fair projects to the Chester County-level competition will have their projects set up and ready to explain to visitors. WFCS principal Robbie Martin said that even though WFCS is a small Christian school, it keeps up with advances in education. “What we do is take what we’ve got and move it forward to the best of our ability. We’re a forward-thinking school, and we’re very much doing what everybody else is doing,” he noted. Martin encourages the community to enjoy the first-time

event. “Come and see what we do, but at the same time there is also going to be other stuff there so you can see what’s actually going on in education as a whole,” he said. “We’re excited to have it, and we look forward to the community being here.” West Fallowfield Christian School is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may visit www.wfcs.org or www.face book.com/westfallowfield christianschool. In the case of extreme weather, a snow date of Tuesday, Feb. 26, has been set. Blessing Brides Ministry Offers New, Used And Vintage Wedding Gowns Women who do not want to spend thousands of dollars on their perfect wedding dress are invited to visit Blessing Brides Ministry, a nonprofit organization that offers new, used and vintage wedding gowns in a boutique setting. Located at 128 E. Lancaster Ave. in Downingtown, Blessing Brides is open on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Monday through Thursday evenings by appointment only. The shop, which was opened in November 2018 by founder

Colleen Donovan, is filled with an assortment of gowns in various styles and in all sizes, including plus-size options. Most of the gowns have been donated; others were purchased by Donovan at local consignment stores and thrift shops. Donovan said she came up with the idea to open the shop as a way for brides to spread the joy of their weddings through a unique form of recycling. “You enjoyed (the dress); you had the abundance to buy it and now you can offer it to someone else,” she said. She also noted that divorced women can donate their gowns as a way to do something positive

after a heartbreak. Donovan makes sure that each dress is clean and ready for purchase. “I have quite a few really remarkable vintage dresses,” she noted. “I also have some that are brand new.” Also offered for sale are veils, vintage gloves and other accessories. Those who visit the shop will be treated to the same experience as if they were at a traditional bridal store. “You can stand on the (pedestal) and look in the mirror, and your mom can come (to watch),” said Donovan. Donovan noted that all donated dresses are tagged with a name and a verse from Scripture. “All

the donated dresses bear the names of the women who donated them,” she explained. “I get their (contact) information, and when the dress is sold, I text them a photo of the new bride who will be wearing their dress. “It would be cool if (the dresses) kept coming back,” she added. “It would be like a ‘Traveling Pants’ story.” All proceeds from gowns sold at the store will be used to purchase additional inventory and to finance the cost of running the shop. “Someone from my church - Providence Church in West Chester - offered me this space at a reasonable rate,” said

Donovan, who works full time as a hospice nurse. “My hope is as I head toward retirement, that I can (devote) myself to doing this full time.”

For more information, readers may email blessingbrides ministry@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com and search for “Blessing Brides Ministry.”

Virtual 5K from pg 1 Bramucci, a resident of Exton, has been teaching online for the past several years. “We partner with local high schools and deliver their academic program online to students who crave an American education but cannot afford to come to America to study,” he explained. “They pay tuition, and we pass (a portion) of the tuition to the schools we partner with as a means of offsetting their budget deficits.” He said his students, who are from Venezuela, Cuba, Kenya and China, are taught in real time. For example, Kenya is eight hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, so he teaches students at 6 a.m., which is 2 p.m. for them. The educational company formed the nonprofit foundation about six months ago. “Not every child can pay tuition, especially refugee students,” Bramucci stated. “We created the charity so we can accept charitable donations for scholarships for students to study online with us.” Currently, Bramucci is teaching language arts and Algebra I to the international students, who all speak English and are

Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, will host an early childhood and kindergarten open house on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 9 a.m. Families with students entering preschool, prekindergarten, or kindergarten are encouraged to attend. LCCS provides an academic program to students in a nurturing Christian environment. LCCS offers two kindergarten program options. The traditional elementary kindergarten students come to campus five days a week. The objective of the fullday kindergarten program is to build a solid foundation upon which students grow academically, physically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. The program is designed to be academically challenging, as well as developmentally appropriate. Kindergarten classrooms at LCCS are organized and structured to support all areas of development, and a variety of materials are used to stimulate students’ curiosity, initiative, and inquiry. LCCS offers an alternative solution for parents desiring both the gift of time with their elementary children as well as the services of a Christian school. This additional and cost-effective program is called The University Model. The University Model was developed to preserve and strengthen the family relation-

very eager to learn. “I was working with students on the island of Trinidad, and I told them it was snowing. It was terribly exciting for them. They have literally never seen snow in person,” he stated. “They were asking what it feels like when snow is touching your skin. The things we take for granted are so unique and special to them.” Bramucci said that teaching the classes online is extremely gratifying. “My student in Kenya said she hated algebra,” he recalled. “About two weeks ago, she said that I made algebra something she could understand and something she enjoyed doing. That was the highest compliment; that’s the role of a teacher.” Bramucci had the opportunity to meet a student from China last spring who graduated from International Christian High School in Philadelphia after completing the online course. The student traveled to the area to participate in the graduation ceremonies with the other students. “To shake his hand was profoundly significant,” Bramucci noted. “It was a powerful moment.”

Bramucci credits Tanna Whitton, president of the board of directors of the foundation, as well as the board members, for the success of the program. “(Tanna) and our board of directors are passionate about education and about supporting students,” he said. For more information and to register for the 5K, readers may visit ww.facebook.com/spi educationfoundation or www.spi educationfoundation.org/events. html. Those who take part in the virtual 5K will receive an event T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded through random drawing, not based on time. “We have sponsors for the race, and we have people signed up from multiple countries,” Bramucci said, noting that he and his international students will run or walk the 5K on Digital Learning Day, which will be observed on Thursday, Feb. 28. “We will have people all around the world participating in the same event at the same time,” he stated. “I even bought brand-new running shoes for this event.”

Community Meals from pg 1 the church fellowship hall from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. According to mission committee member Bonnie Rice, the types of foods served are prepared on a rotating basis, but the group tries to serve a new menu once or twice each year. “November and December and January meals are pretty standard,” said Rice, who noted that November’s menu includes an Amish wedding meal, which mixes turkey, stuffing, and gravy in a type of casserole. In December, the meal consists of ham and scalloped potatoes, and in January, traditional pork and sauerkraut are served. Other regular meals include spaghetti and meatballs, Lancaster County-style chicken potpie with noodles, and meatloaf. “In the summer, we have an indoor picnic with hamburgers and hot dogs,” said Rice. Attendance at meals has been as high as 115, but Eshleman said that usually 70 to 80 plus up to 20 helpers attend. “We gear toward feeding 100 (people),” shared Rice, who noted that leftovers are sometimes frozen and sometimes donated to The Factory Ministries in Paradise through another church committee that provides meals to the youth center. Ingredients to prepare the meals come from a variety of sources, including church members who donate food items and food that is purchased at a discount. Desserts and breads are

update a smartphone’s operating system, do so right away. Also, avoid public WiFi. Hackers target victims in many ways, including through public WiFi hotspots. Smartphone users who don’t have unlimited data plans may be tempted to use public WiFi when out and about. But doing so makes users vulnerable to skilled hackers who are just waiting to access unknowing users’ personal information, including their financial data. When leaving the house, turn off the WiFi on the phone, only turning it back on when needed and only if the user can access a secure network. In addition, accept two-factor

authentication. Two-factor authentication was designed so internet users would have another layer of protection against hackers. When attempting to sign into an account, whether it is email, social media, banking, or another login that requires a username and password, a user may be asked if he or she wants to enroll in two-factor authentication. This refers to the system in which users receive a temporary code via the messaging apps on their phones that only the users have access to. Some might say two-factor authentication is a nuisance, but receiving and typing in the short code

will only take an extra few seconds and it is an extra measure of protection against hackers. Finally, when purchasing and downloading apps, only use official app stores such as the Apple Store or Google Play. Some hackers access phones via apps they offer through websites that, on the surface, seem legitimate. However, such apps contain viruses and malware that make it easy for hackers to access phones once they have been installed. Smartphone users must recognize the importance of protecting their phones, and all the sensitive information their phones contain, from hackers.

Creating A Fire Safety Plan

R030570

For many smartphone users, their smartphones are never too far out of reach. This is a reflection of the role these devices now play in everyday life as well as the amount of sensitive information contained within them. The treasure trove of personal information, including banking details, personal emails, and private photos, that smartphones

Fires are unpredictable and can cause devastating loss of life and property. The U.S. Fire Administration states that, in 2017, there were 1,319,500 reported fires that resulted in 3,400 deaths and 14,670 injuries in the United States. Fire safety protocol gives people the ability to get out of a building promptly and safely in the event of a fire. People are advised to develop a comprehensive fire safety plan, which can help save lives when used in concert with functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. However, the National Fire Protection Association says only about one-quarter of households actually have developed and practiced a fire escape plan or have taken measures to prevent fires around their homes. Malfunctioning kitchen appliances should be repaired or replaced promptly. Appliances should be kept clean and always according to manufacturers’

instructions. People should not leave a room while cooking. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that most kitchen fires, which can ignite in as little as one minute, start after someone left the room. A fully charged and functioning fire extinguisher should be kept on the premises, preferably one on each floor of a home or business. Power strips should not be overloaded with plugs. Homeowners should have a licensed electrician inspect and suggest updates to antiquated wiring systems. Children should be taught about the dangers of playing with fire. Matches and lighters should be kept away from children. All members of an office or household should be gathered together to come up with an effective evacuation plan. People should walk through the

building and inspect all possible escape routes. Two ways out of each room should be identified. If a window exit is recommended, a functioning ladder that can provide safe egress should be available. An evacuation plan should include an outside meeting place that is far away from the residence or building, but close enough that it can be easily reached by all. A buddy system should be set up so that certain members of the family or company will be responsible for helping elderly, young, or disabled people exit the premises. Individuals should practice identifying escape routes and institute regular evacuation plans so that everyone can function quickly should a fire occur. Fires can spread quickly and easily claim lives. By addressing fire risks and implementing safety plans, people can save lives.

New Reporting Tool Available A tool for reporting suspicious activity surrounding the prescribing or dispensing of prescription drugs, including opioids, has been created. The tool will be available on the attorney general’s website at https://pennsylvania.pmp aware.net, on the Department of Health’s website at www.health .pa.gov, and within the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) site for registered users at https://pennsylvania.pmp aware.net/. By making the attorney general’s suspicious activity reporting tool available on the PDMP and the Department of Health’s website, another layer of safety is added for the responsible prescribing of controlled substances such as opioids. The illegal diversion of prescription pain pills from doctors’ offices and pharmacies is contributing to the opioid epidemic across the commonwealth, but diversion activity is hard to identify and even harder to investigate. The new reporting tool, which is available online to

everyone, allows people to anonymously give the attorney general’s office detailed information about suspected diversion so criminal activity can be better investigated and prosecuted. The attorney general’s Office of Diversion created the suspicious activity report form, a webbased form, for health care providers and the general public to report suspicious activity involving prescription medication. Things that might be reported include fraudulent, stolen, or altered prescriptions; a suspicious doctor or pharmacy; or an individual obtaining prescription drugs for any purpose other than the treatment of an existing medical condition, such as for purposes of misuse, abuse, or diversion. Completed reports are assigned to the appropriate attorney general’s office investigator in the region where the suspicious activity is alleged to have taken place. Those with an active Pennsylvania professional

license that permits them to prescribe or dispense medications must register to use the PDMP. Authorized users include prescribers, dispensers, the attorney general’s office (on behalf of law enforcement), designated commonwealth personnel, and medical examiners or county coroners. More than 90,000 registrants have conducted approximately 1.6 million patient searches each month. The PDMP online database allows prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances to monitor who is obtaining opioids, who prescriptions are being obtained from, and how often they are prescribed, and it also supports clinicians in identifying patients who may be struggling from the disease of addiction and help connect them with treatment services. For more information on the PDMP, readers may visit https://pennsylvania.pmpaware. net/.

To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this

will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice
