Christiana Fire Company Receives Pet Oxygen Masks BY FRANCINE FULTON
When a dog, cat or other small pet is rescued from a smoky house or apartment fire, volunteer firefighters with the
Christiana Fire Company will be able to more easily administer much-needed oxygen to them thanks to a donation of pet-sized oxygen masks from Pine Creek Animal Hospital. See Pet Oxygen Masks pg 3
Green Club members who collected plastic bottle caps for recycling include (back, from left) Abby Fleming, treasurer Emmerson Ware, president Lily Rising, Mia Mascherino, (front) vice president Fallon Weber, secretary Carrie Beecher and Cassidy Jefferies.
Recycled Bottle Caps Will Result In Two New Benches At Octorara
“The goal for these benches is to get students outside more and to give them a space where they can learn, as well as relax and enjoy nature.” The caps were collected by club members, as well as the Octorara school community. “The students had started collecting caps from milk containers in the lunchroom, and staff members started bringing in their caps from home,” Rapone said. “The Green Club doesn’t accept caps from outside
the school, as there is safety concern. We have a steady stream of caps coming from staff, faculty and students.” She noted that the Green Club is working to raise funds for a redesign and renovation of a courtyard area at the school. “The benches will be placed in that area. We hope to make a pathway system and mini amphitheater that classes could use to go outside for their lessons,” Rapone noted. “We hope to make many more benches maybe around 10 - and maybe some picnic tables, too.” The outdoor classroom is all part of an effort to get more students outside to enjoy the courtyard space. “The goal for these benches is to get students outside more and to give them a space where they can learn, as well as relax and enjoy nature. We have a perfect courtyard area, but it is not very accessible or used much,” Rapone shared. “We want to create a pathway system

“Plastic waste is so pervasive, and being able to transform the waste into something that is useful is exciting and important,” said Marcia Rapone, adviser of the Green Club at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, when describing how the students collected plastic bottle caps that will be made into benches for the school. “It’s such a great teachable moment to show that (collecting) waste can be viewed as an opportunity.” Members of the Green Club, who began collecting caps in the fall of 2019, gathered a total of 279 pounds of plastic caps, which will be chipped up and melted down into boards and made into two benches by Eco Plastic Products of Delaware. The students recently took their donation to the Wilmington facility, where they learned about the plastic recycling process.
“I am fortunate to have a back storage room in my classroom where I put the nine giant boxes we filled,” explained Rapone. “Caps take up less space, so that’s why we collected just caps, but Eco Plastics takes all kinds of plastics.”

The charity, which started in the fall of 2019, is based on a quote from Luke 3:11, which reads, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.” Burke, president, and Meads, vice president, are both graduates of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and coincidentally met while attending the same church. “It was random for us to find each other,” said Burke. “We both love fashion and clothes and wanted to serve the Lord with what we know. We started looking around for places to help out and be a service.” As part of the ministry, they gather donations of clothing, shoes and accessories and distribute them in partnership with local agencies, including Chester County Women’s Services in Coatesville; the Maternal and Child Health Consortium in West Chester; YoungLives Chester County, a ministry for teen and young mothers; and Genesis Women’s Clinic, with locations in Pottstown and Phoenixville. On two separate occasions during Girl’s Night at The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center, Two Tunics hosted a pop-up shop, where the girls and their families were able to choose free clothing and accessories. Most recently, Two Tunics donated 80 prom dresses to Anchored Ministries in Elverson. The dresses will be distributed free of charge in March to girls

who attend Twin Valley High School. “On Thursdays at noon, Coatesville Bible Fellowship does a Bible study and parenting class, and women from the Coatesville CYWA (Community Youth and Women’s Alliance) go to that class,” Burke noted. “I bring a couple bins of clothing for them to choose from. The women come and have their class and they take a few items each, and then the next week I bring some more. It’s a fun thing for them to brighten up their day.” Community members who would like to donate clothing are asked to contact Two Tunics in advance. In addition, specific needs are listed on the organization’s Facebook page. Monetary donations will be used to help fund the cost of renting a larger space to store the clothing.

He noted that having the oxygen masks will be especially helpful when pets are home alone. “There were (recently) some house fires and in both instances (firefighters) broke in (to fight the fire) because the people were at work,” he stated. Reimold has been involved with the Christiana Fire Company for more than 30 years as assistant chief and deputy chief and, for the last 20 years, as chief. “We use (oxygen masks) in emergency services anyway, (but) I am hoping these never get used.” The all-volunteer Christiana Fire Company, 215 S. Bridge St., Christiana, serves Christiana Borough, Atglen Borough and Sadsbury Township. The company is actively seeking volunteers. “There are plenty of things to do - administration, fire police and firefighters - just about anything,” Reimold said. “That is true of all fire companies right now.” For more information about the fire company, including volunteer opportunities, call 610-593-2142 or visit www.christianafire.com or www.face book.com/christianafirecompany. The idea of donating the oxygen masks came from certified veterinary technician Jodi Eisenberger, who is also an emergency medical technician (EMT). She was able to purchase the oxygen mask kits from Wag’N O2 Fur Life. Each kit includes three different sizes of masks that will fit dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and other small animals. Each mask also includes instructions on the proper oxygen flow needed for the pet. Christiana Fire Company Chief Sonny Reimold traveled to Pine Creek Animal Hospital, located at 150 Pine Creek Drive, Christiana, to accept the donation from Eisenberger, as well as veterinary technicians Doris Zimmerman and Jessie Rayburn and practice owner and manager Dr. Ashley Hammer Tuma. Reimold explained that the new masks will be stored inside an emergency vehicle. “They will go in the command vehicle, which goes to all fire calls. It is where the command post is set up,” he explained. “Christiana Ambulance, which is separate from the fire company, knows that we have (the oxygen masks). They run on all our fire calls. The firefighters will get the pets out and the ambulance (workers) will be treating them. It is a joint venture.” Like humans, pets are given oxygen in the event of smoke inhalation. “You never know when there is a fire involving pets,” said Reimold. “It’s something that is on everyone’s mind.”

The benches were a nice goal to work toward while we figure out how to fundraise and finance the bigger renovation.” Rapone noted that the courtyard project was originally pitched as a class project by one of her climate science classes in 2018. “They wanted to do plantings on our campus in an effort to draw more carbon down from the atmosphere,” she recalled.
“Those students - Wyatt Umble, Brock Young and Bianca Cortez have graduated now, but that seed of an idea that they planted has started to take root.” Eco Plastic Products estimates that the two benches will be ready for pickup in April. Rapone added that one of the Green Club’s next projects is to do an outreach program with the younger students in the district on Earth Day.

Photographer Eric Weeks opened a new exhibition, “twentysix wawa stores,” at Street Road Project, 725 Street Road, Cochranville. The exhibit by the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) photography and video chair will run through Saturday, May 28. A dialogue with Edward Ruscha’s seminal 1962 work “Twentysix Gasoline Stations,” “twentysix wawa stores” examines the convenience store and gas station in light of America’s relationship to the automobile
