Residents of Ashbridge Manor Senior Living who are pen pals with students at the Octorara Primary Learning Center traveled to the school to pick up donated puzzles and activity books that the students collected.

Generations Unite Through Pen Pal Program how they play in the winter,” said Phillips. “I shared that I grew up across the street from a big lake, so I grew up ice skating.” Mitman pointed out that the Ashbridge residents print their letters so that students can read them, since they don’t learn about writing in cursive until third grade. “I give the letters to the kids and if they need some help reading it, I will help them,” she said. “Most of the kids read (the letters) on their own.” In addition, the Octorara students hold live story time readings with the Downingtown seniors. “Not only are they pen pals, but some of the students from my class volunteered to read them stories virtually,” noted Mitman. “They practice books and read them.” “Not only do they do a good job reading, they turn the pages so we can see the pictures,” Phillips added.

Because of the ease of texting and emailing, composing handwritten letters has become a bit of lost art. Students in Lindsay Mitman’s second-grade class at the Octorara Primary Learning Center in partnership with residents of Ashbridge Manor Senior Living of Downingtown have revived the letter-writing tradition through their annual pen pal program. The students started corresponding with the seniors at the beginning of the school year. All of the letters are included in a binder, which goes back and forth between the students and seniors about once a month. “We write things about us, and we ask questions. Sometimes the kids here draw pictures for them to put in their apartments,” said second-grader Peyton Chansky. The pen pal program came about

because of a family connection between Mitman and her mother, Veronique Hadfield, who is the activities director at Ashbridge Manor Senior Living. Recently, Hadfield traveled to the Octorara school to pick up a donation of word search and crossword puzzle books and jigsaw puzzles that students in all grades had collected for the seniors as part of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service activity. “There are over 100 books and puzzles, and we hope it brings them a little fun,” said Mitman. Accompanying Hadfield were two of the pen pals, Gail Phillips and Rosemary Spezzo. Spezzo’s granddaughter is Megan McLoone, a teacher at the Octorara Primary Learning Center. Phillips has two student pen pals, a boy and a girl. Recent letters have included questions related to the current season. “I wanted to know

Combining his experiences as a member of the United States Marine Corps with his love of reading and writing, Michael Peters, a 1982 graduate of Octorara Area High School, has penned his first book, “Twin Triangles.” The story, according to Peters, revolves around a squad of Marines on a fishing trip. While the Marines are at sea, their boat vanishes in a Bermuda Triangle, which was relocated to the mainland of the United States. They emerge on the other side of the world, where they must do battle against an enemy. He was a member of the FFA, then known as Future Farmers of America, and was a county officer. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, earning 54 merit badges and the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduation, he followed a family tradition and enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he served in the infantry as a mortar gunner, visiting Japan, the Philippines and Korea while in the service. “My unit was on a ship a lot and I would read a lot of books to fill my spare time at sea,” Peters said, noting one of his favorites is Stephen King’s “The Stand,” which he read multiple times. He also enjoyed reading works by John Jakes, including “North and South.” “Reading is not just important to be a good writer, but to be well informed,” Peters added. “I used to read about history. Being from Pennsylvania, the area has a lot of history.” In addition, Peters presented his writings as gifts to others. “I would write poems and short stories and hand them out to guys on the ship to

thoughts and ideas both during and after his miliary service. “Over a period of years whenever I got an idea, I would take notes and write outlines,” he said, sharing that he used those materials as the basis for his book. “I would break out my notes and look at them and start typing. I would (write for) a couple of hours a day.” He completed writing the book in about three months and then began the editing and proofreading process. He found a publisher, and the book was released in January. “It had always been a dream (of mine) that I would have a book written. I have always wanted to do it,” Peters said, noting that plans are in the works for a second book. sustainable and fit the needs of our community.” The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic was a catalyst toward launching the program, according to Nagle. By the fall of 2021, The Factory had identified ways to step into the void. “(We wanted to answer the question) ‘How do we help employees maximize what they have?’” said Nagle, noting that The Factory advocates specialize in helping those in need to benefit from available resources for medical health, mental health, and other needs. Another goal is to help employers better understand employees. “There’s a gap between employees and the executives, and judgment can form on both sides,” said Nagle. “Mike will be on-site to build relationships with people. We are looking to form a strong relationship to serve our for-profit friends and neighbors.” Lewis noted that helping employees to learn creative ways to maximize what they earn will be one of his missions. “A big part of the program is the idea of new learning,” Lewis said. “(Wherever there is a) lack … to get more of that resource, you have to learn something new,” he explained. “That is one of the foundational

Mike Lewis, who is the first workforce advocate for The Factory Ministries, is making connections in the greater Paradise area. “We have been talking to area businesses and finding out what their needs are,” said Lewis. “One of the things that stood out was employee retention, so we have wrestled with how bringing advocacy into the workplace could help with retention.” In his new position, Lewis will be working to connect employees in a variety of local enterprises, including hospitality, transportation, food service, plumbing, electrical, and retail, with resources and services that are available to them. At the same time, he will work with employers using the Bridges Out of Poverty program to encourage communication between workers and employers to improve workforce retention. “The more effective the communication, the better the work environment, and the more likely someone will stay in that place of business,” said Lewis, who is currently transitioning from working as an adult advocate at The Factory. Lewis first connected with The Factory through executive director Adam Nagle when Lewis was completing his Master of Divinity at Liberty University in early 2021. Nagle, who was developing the workforce advocacy program at the time, saw Lewis as a possible fit for the position. Nagle, who has experience in employee training and retention, said that building such a program for frontline employees and employers has been under discussion. “We didn’t just want to add more programming,” noted Nagle. “ We want it to be

Chester County Launches Celebration Planning The Chester County Commissioners have taken their first step toward planning the county’s celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026. They have established the America250PA Chester County Commission. The plan is to formally appoint members to the commission in March. Representatives of all ages and from all areas of the county are invited to apply. Commission members will serve for up to three years. The county commissioners will also designate a chair and a vice chair. Further information and the application can be found at www.chesco.org/America250. Chester County Planning Commission executive director Brian O’Leary explained that planning is beginning now because it takes a long time to produce ideas and coordinate events this elaborate, particularly with a variety of partners involved. He added that the celebration will cover closer to 300 years because Chester County was active long before representatives from the 13 colonies gathered in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Chester County is coordinating its activities with the statewide group America250PA. Two representatives from that organization, Marissa Gioffre and Jaclyn Victor, recently attended the commissioners’ public meeting virtually to discuss similar celebration planning across the commonwealth. In their comments, they thanked Chester County for its support.

Chester County Commissioner Michelle Kichline, who represents the county on the America250PA County Advisory Committee, and who is a board member of the Chester County History Center, said the local commission will work on a parallel track, balancing county events with participation in state-wide activities. Unlike Philadelphia, where the historic activities will be concentrated in the area around Independence Hall, Chester County’s activities will be spread over a larger area. The commission’s tasks will include uniting heritage tourism sites for people to visit. The commission will meet quarterly and may branch out to form subcommittees and engage in special programs, events, educational projects or fundraising activities. The commissioners said the public’s involvement in planning activities will be key to the success of Chester County’s commemoration. The commission will also collaborate directly with stakeholder institutions and municipalities. America250PA focuses on various areas around which to create celebratory activities. The 14 areas are agriculture, arts and culture, commerce and workforce, diversity, education and innovation, the environment, government, health care, history and preservation, legacy, nature, military, veterans and women, technology, and tourism. For more information on how to get involved, visit the aforementioned websitening

Funds Available Through Heating Assistance Program In celebration of National Energy Assistance Day, Feb. 1, area residents were reminded that increased funding is available to assist those in lower-income households with heating costs through the LowIncome Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Additional help is available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal and the American Rescue Plan. LIHEAP provides one-time cash grants paid directly to

utility companies or fuel providers as an account credit. Grant amounts are based on household size, income, and fuel type. Minimum grant amounts will be raised from $200 to $500, and maximum grant amounts will be bumped from $1,000 to $1,500. Chester County residents can apply for LIHEAP at www.compass.state.pa.us or call the Chester County Assistance Office at 610-466-1042 to receive a paper application.

County Works On Housing Issue Chester County leaders are looking for ways to create more homes affordable to middle-income and smaller families. Chester County’s population has quadrupled over the last 90 years to 534,000 residents currently, and growth is expected to continue. As a result of the county’s appeal and tremendous growth, it has the highest median housing value in Pennsylvania at $375,000. With the county’s median household income of about $100,000 per year, many people in the county’s workforce cannot afford to live in the county. The county has an ample supply of single family detached homes, and the county funds development of affordable housing for lower-income families and seniors. The big gap falls in the middle. Chester County’s existing housing stock does not currently meet the evolving needs caused by growth and changes in its demographics. The number of one- and twoperson households is increasing, which leads to more demand for smaller homes that are affordable for people living alone or on a fixed income. Chester County has anticipated the issue, and its comprehensive plan, “Landscapes3,” addresses these changing needs. The housing gap will require

housing types such as duplexes, twins, cottage court/courtyards, and conversions of commercial and industrial properties into residential apartments, among other options. These properties will look like other housing types in the neighborhood but have more units within those structures. Chester County is borrowing ideas from Montgomery County that the neighboring county has deployed to deal with the issue. Sarah Peck of Progressive New Homes pointed to three examples, including the Danley twin homes in Lower Merion Township, the Arbor Mews, and Arbor Heights Townhomes in Norristown. A forthcoming report from the Chester County Planning Commission will make recommendations to expand housing options that will meet the needs of the “Missing Middle.” They include zoning for these kinds of housing, encouraging infill development, and providing county resources to encourage this kind of construction. At the same time County officials say they must balance resident concerns about density, loss of green space, and potential traffic congestion against the need for this kind of housing by Chester County families. A recording of the 2021 Housing Forum is available at: https://youtu.be/moc InFgsCZY.

Business Idea Competition Set Now celebrating its 10th year, the annual Business Idea Competition (BIC) at West Chester University (WCU) welcomes anyone who has a business start-up idea to compete for prize money in the 2022 contest. Submissions are due on Friday, Feb. 25. Ideas that have not yet been commercialized and can be used as the foundation for a new business are eligible for one of the four tracks in this competition. The tracks are WCU undergraduates; WCU graduate students, alumni, faculty, and staff; Chester County-based startups; and Chester County high school students. Participants will be evaluated in two steps. Ideas will initially be reviewed by professional businesspeople. In a fast-pitch competition on Wednesday, March 30, the top

ideas in each category will be selected for the in-person Business Idea Pitch Competition, which will take place on Wednesday, April 20, at the West Chester University Foundation, 202 Carter Drive, West Chester. Winners will be announced and awards will be presented at the conclusion of the Idea Pitch on April 20. A grand prize will be awarded, along with first- and second-place prizes in each track. To submit an entry, visit www.wcubizidea.com. The 10th annual WCU BIC is cohosted by WCU’s Dr. Edwin Cottrell Entrepreneurial Leadership Center, the Keiretsu Forum Mid-Atlantic, and the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce. Trooper Kelly Osborne, a resident of Strasburg Township, has worked in Lancaster County since 2000. Over the years, she has developed friendships with several local police officers, state troopers, and employees of municipal departments, which is why she was surprised that she had never heard about Project Lifesaver until 2019. That year, Kelly decided to put her father, Courtney Osborne, in an assisted living facility because his dementia had worsened. Prior to that, Courtney had wandered at least twice, and on one occasion, he got lost while driving and was found in Delaware County. On Oct. 18, 2019, Kelly received a voicemail at work from a sheriff. The voicemail was difficult for her to understand; all Kelly heard was “Project Lifesaver” and “Cape May, New Jersey.” She decided to return the call later. The next day, Oct. 19, Kelly’s father wandered from the assisted living facility and passed away at the age of 83. It wasn’t until about a week later that Kelly returned the phone call and heard about Project Lifesaver. “When he told me it was a search-andrescue program for people

who wander, I got chills,” she explained. “This is like the universe telling me I have to look into this program and we have to become involved in it.” Project Lifesaver is a search-and-rescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brain-related challenges across the United States. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a participant has wandered, a search team spreads out over the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter. After receiving permission from the captain of Troop J Lancaster, attaining funding for the equipment from Camp Cadet, and securing funding for the training from the Pilot Club of Lancaster, Kelly and three other individuals with Troop J - Lancaster participated in a three-day training course in July 2021 to become electronic search specialists.

Last State Silver Bank Rolls up for grabs Fortune of old Silver Coins issued by the U.S. Gov’t sealed away in the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents STATE RESTRICTION: Only residents of PA get the $19 state minimum - non state residents must pay $57 per coin PENNSYLVANIA - “We’re bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. That’s because the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the National Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s twenty rarely seen Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars worth up to 60 times their face value for just $380 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $57 per coin which totals $1,140 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars minted over 50 years ago. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit al-

lowed of 6 Kennedy Presidential Silver Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that these coins date back tot he mid 1900’s and some may be worth up to 60 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. “Rarely seen silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars have nearly doubled in collector value in just the last several years,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 6 Bank Rolls because you can only get them rolled this way directly from the National Mint and Treasury and they are the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. Q IMPORTANT FACTS: The dates and mint marks of the rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but any rare, scarce or highly collectible coins, regardless of their value that state residents may find inside the sealed Bank Rolls are theirs to keep.

Q FLYING OUT THE DOOR: Calls are pouring in from state residents who are trying to get their hands on the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist sealed away in the secured packages pictured above before the deadline ends. That’s because residents who beat the 2-day deadline printed in today’s publication by calling 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1625 are cashing in on the lowest ever state minimum price set by the National Mint and Treasury.

Answering Your Questions Q: How to claim the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls A: If you are a Pennsylvania resident read the important information below about claiming the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at: 1-800-233-5658 EXT: JFR1625 beginning at precisely 8:30 A.M. this morning. Q: Are these Silver Kennedy Half Dollars worth more than other Half Dollars? A: Yes. These rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were minted in the mid 1900’s. That makes these silver coins extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all. In fact, these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command collector values of many times their face value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday. Q: How much are the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls worth? A: It’s impossible to say, but these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars date back to the mid 1900’s and some are worth up to 60 times the face value and there are 20 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

Q: How do I get the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls? A: The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1625 before the deadline ends. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll of 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, which totals just $380 for the full Bank Roll. That’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,140 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

R080592

Q: Why are so many Pennsylvania residents calling to get them? A: Because they are the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. These are not ordinary bank rolls. These are full Bank Rolls containing 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars dating clear back to the mid 1900’s some worth up to 60 times their face value. Remember this. Only Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury for the next two days. Non state residents must pay $57 per coin.

Annual Campground Directory Published

R080545

The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) released the 2022 directory of its Pennsylvania Campground Directory on Jan. 1. This 68-page, four-color glossy magazine lists 222 campgrounds and RV resorts in Pennsylvania. The annual PCOA Directory divides the state into eight geographic areas, and the directory includes maps, color coding, and detailed facility listings for PCOA member campgrounds within each area. Each listing includes the association member’s name, mailing address, phone number, access directions, number of sites, and facilities available. PCOA president Ryan McFarland noted that over half of the campgrounds also have cabin and cottage rentals. Nearly half of the printed copies of the directory are given to campgrounds, RV dealerships, chambers of commerce, visitors’ bureaus, and Pennsylvania information centers, and a large number of copies are distributed at 35 RV shows across the northeastern U.S. The directory is available for free. Members of the public can order the directory by visiting www.pacamping.com or calling 610-767-5026. PCOA is an association of private campground owners dedicated to the advancement of family camping. The group is an affiliate of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, which represents 3,000 commercial parks throughout the U.S.
