They had to sing and dance and perform a cold read, (which is) reading a little bit from the script (as part) of their audition.” Lynch noted that the performance at Octorara is the actual Broadway version of the play. Based on the Depression-era comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray, the musical follows the title character on her journey from an orphanage on the Lower East Side in New York to a mansion on Fifth Avenue.

As a result, people had to print out their entry and bring it to us,” noted Chotty Sprenkle, contest organizer. “The virtual (option) was really convenient, but we need (people) to print out their photos so we can display them at the Quarryville, Atglen and Oxford libraries and for anyone else who wants to put up the pictures at their venue.” “We are hoping for a robust (number) of entries this year,” she added. of Show winner and a People’s Choice award. All photographs must be taken within the Octoraro Watershed, which includes Cecil County, Md., as well as the following townships in Pennsylvania: Eden, Bart, Sadsbury (in both Lancaster and Chester counties), Colerain, West Sadsbury, Highland, West Fallowfield, Upper Oxford, Lower Oxford, East Nottingham, Little Britain, Fulton, East Drumore and West Nottingham. All photographs must be identified with their location within the watershed, whether it be the county, township or borough. Photographs may be color or black and white. Photos will be entered and judged in four categories: Wildlife, which includes plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and fungi (no domestic animals); Landscapes, which includes sites, scenery and historic buildings; Agriculture, which is farm-related activities and/or farm landscapes; and Trailcam, photographs captured on remote cameras. Sprenkle explained that photos cannot be altered or created with computer programs. “The definition of ‘created’ is putting something in the photograph that was not present when you took the photograph,” she noted. “For instance, you cannot place a moon in the photograph if it was not present when you took the photograph. Programs that allow you to enhance a photo for color, clarity, exposure, etc., are acceptable.” All photographs, which measure 8 by 11 inches or larger, must be mounted on foam or hard cardboard. “We will put Velcro on them and attach them to our display boards,” noted Sprenkle. Entries will be accepted at the OWA office, located inside the West Fallowfield Township Building, 3095 Limestone Road, Suite 7, Cochranville. Photos may be dropped off on Wednesday and Thursday, March 6 and 7, between 6 and 8 p.m. each evening. Those who are unable to make those dates should contact Sprenkle for alternate arrangements. All photos must be received by March 7. This year’s judge is Carey Bresler, Oxford Library director. All entries will be displayed, and the winners will be recognized at the OWA’s annual membership meeting on Thursday, March 21, at 6 p.m. at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville. Winning photographs will also be featured in the OWA newsletter and on the website. For more information, contact Sprenkle at csprenkle9@gmail .com or 610-593-2808 or text 484-888-5416.

Bird-in-Hand. Appetizers will be served at 5:15 p.m., and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Christopher is the son of Chinese immigrants. His father, Leon, a dentist, and his mother, Angela, raised him in Chicago. Buckwalter noted that Christopher was brought up with the understanding that he should get good grades, obey his parents, and follow in his father’s footsteps. While still in college, Christopher announced to his parents that he was engaged in an alternative lifestyle that did not align with their beliefs. He also began using and selling drugs. Three months before he was scheduled to graduate from dental school, he was kicked out. Christopher then moved to Atlanta. Before Christopher was kicked out of school, both Leon and Angela had become born-again Christians, and Angela spent much time in prayer focused on the hope that Christopher would find Christ.

Arrested on drug charges, Christopher was in federal prison when he learned that he was HIV positive. One day, his focus was drawn to graffiti on his ceiling that referenced Jeremiah 29:11, which reads,‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Christopher became a Christian who now finds his identity in Christ alone. Upon leaving prison, he studied at Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College Graduate School, receiving his Doctor of Ministry from Bethel Seminary. Claudia Landis, business manager at Linville Hill, noted that several staff members had heard of Christopher’s story. She said that Christopher wrote “Out of a Far Country” with Angela. “It’s a beautiful story of his conversion,” Landis reported, adding that chapters written by Angela testify to “how hard it is for parents to watch

their children go through a season of such darkness and not become hopeless.” Buckwalter acknowledged that the speaker was chosen with whole families in mind. “Oftentimes behind the story is a praying mom or grandmom who changed (the outcome),” he said. “We hope this evening will create space for young people to hear a journey to truth and to offer encouragement for those praying (parents) whose children are stuck in a really dark place that breakthrough will come.” Buckwalter added that guiding children in their own stories is a mission of Linville Hill. “As a school, we recognize the responsibility to train our children and part of our job is to help them tell a better story,” he said. “To do that, we have to put in front of them stories (of) finding truth and finding God that are victorious and hopeful even though sometimes those journeys are filled with pain and difficulty.” Sponsorships and tickets are available by calling 717-442-4447, ext. 1017.

Troop 4079, who were on hand following Sunday services at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen, the troop’s sponsoring organization. The Scouts were accompanied by their mother, troop leader Lillian Thompson, who reported that Thin Mints were the most frequently purchased cookie that day. Other varieties include Adventurefuls, which are brownie-like cookies with a caramel-flavored cream; Toast-Yay! cookies, which are shaped like French toast and dipped in icing; Trefoils, which are shortbread cookies; Lemonades, which are shortbread cookies with a lemon-flavored icing; and Caramel deLites, which are crispy cookies coated with caramel and coconut and drizzled with chocolate stripes. Peanut butter varieties are Peanut Butter Patties dipped in chocolate and the Peanut Butter Sandwich, which is an oatmeal cookie with a peanut butter filling. The goal of the cookie sales, according to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP), is to teach skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. “They learn how to count, how to make change and restock their inventory,” said Lillian.

“We learn that you have to find a way to be nice (when they say no). You just say, ‘OK’ and ‘Thank you,’” Eleanor added. Those who visit the booths also have an opportunity to donate cookies to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by GSEP. “We collect money for the Hometown Heroes and then distribute those cookies in our community between local veterans, fire company, police and ambulance, the food cupboard and senior center,” Lillian noted. The Scouts are also able to keep a portion of the money for troop activities. Lillian reported that the troop will use its money for camping. In addition to troop activities, the Scouts take part in community service projects. “We have done trash pickups, made pet beds for local animal shelters and helped with food drives,” Lillian said. “The girls’ favorite is visiting Westminster Place in Parkesburg and spending time with (the residents). We visit three or four times a year. Our (most recent visit) was going for Valentine’s Day bingo.” Scouts from the Octorara Service Unit will sell cookies on weekends through the end of March at the following locations: Tractor Supply, 985 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg;

Selling cookies recently at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church were Lillian (back), Eleanor (front, left) and Erin Thompson.

“Annie” from pg 1 show,” said Lynch. He noted that he chose the play along with the director KC Testerman, an Octorara parent. “She has a strong theater background,” said Lynch, adding, “Because we have a lot more females this year, we needed a musical where we could show off our female talent along with the male talent.” He said that most of the students have heard of the play and were familiar with some of the main musical numbers. “Right now, the most challenging part for them is putting together the singing and dancing. They have to do both at the same time,” Lynch added. “We are working hard to get ready for the play.” The cast of “Annie” at Octorara includes the following students: Melanie Witte as Annie, Declan Lomboy as Oliver Warbucks, Menah Alkhabaz as Grace Farrell, Bella Delise as Miss Aggie Hannigan, Daniel Keane as Rooster Hannigan, Liz Murphy as Lily St. Regis, Evelyn Witte as Molly, Lauren Bierlein as July, Eva Elboubkri as Kate, Jona Linnenbaugh as Pepper, Julianna Wood as Duffy and Grace Eberhardt as Tessie. Octorara Junior-Senior High School is located at 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Tickets for the show will be available at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and for students and senior citizens. scan this code for more local news townlively.com
