scraps of fabric, which are put together in unique ways. “We usually work with a design wall a piece of flannel on the wall and we cut and shape the pieces to see if they relate to each other,” she explained. “Or you might have an idea to use curves to express a feeling. (Maybe you want the quilt) to be soft and gentle. Other times you just start sewing blocks together, and after you look at them, you cut them apart diagonally or rearrange and sew again. It’s a lot of fun.” The LMQG, which formed in January 2016, meets at Ridgeview Mennonite Church at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. In addition to members from Lancaster, Berks and Chester counties, the group attracts members from surrounding areas. “We have members that come from Delaware and Maryland and from outside Philadelphia,” Logan reported. “We have members that come in from York and Harrisburg.” The meetings include speakers and demonstrations. “We also have sew days where we sit and sew for 12 hours together, which everyone loves,” Logan noted. “We try to do three big events a year where we bring in internationally known speakers. (Hosting Sherri Lynn Wood) is our big event for 2020.” Logan said that the LMQG’s take on creating quilts generates works of art. “Most of us began as traditional quilters,” she stated. “It’s almost like the modern art movement. I have a fine arts degree, and this is an extension of my art ability. I see it and use it that way.” For more information about the LMQG, readers may visit www.facebook.com/Lancaster MQG.

Wood will present an Improv Mashup on March 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the workshop, attendees will learn how to create quilts using spontaneous designs through a series of improv challenges. To register, readers may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Improv Mashup With Sherri Lynn Wood.” An Improv Round Robin will take place on March 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. After learning the technique of improv quilting, attendees will leave with a distinctive quilt top. To register for the Round Robin workshop, readers may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Improv Round Robin With Sherri Lynn Wood.” Finally, Wood will present a lecture about her craft on March 7 from 6 to 7 p.m. Walk-in guests will be welcome, and no registration is required. More information and complete descriptions of the workshops and lecture are available at www.sherrilynnwood.com/events. Maureen Logan, LMQG president, said the visit by the improvisational quilter coincides with the club’s mission to promote nontraditional methods of creating quilts. “Modern quilting is a different take on quilting. One part of it is improv quilting,” Logan stated. “(In improv quilting) you don’t follow any set rule or pattern. You design on the fly. (Wood) has quite a history and a progression that she has gone through to get to this point in her experience as a quilter. She has been very successful.” Logan said that creating a quilt in the modern way is both fun and challenging. “Sometimes working improv is harder than following a pattern,” said Logan. “You are taking a risk, and it does not always work out; you have to be flexible and go with the flow. Most of the time when you are done, you will like it.” Logan said improv quilting is a good way to utilize leftover

This year, students who took part in the American History Essay Contest presented annually by the Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) were asked to imagine what it would be like to be a passenger on the Mayflower, the English cargo ship that brought the Pilgrims from Plymouth, England, to the New World in 1620. The essay topic was chosen in honor of the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower and the founding of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. The winners of the contest who successfully related the spirit of that voyage into their essays were honored during a DAR meeting on Feb. 10 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester. The winners of the contest were sixth-grader Noori Choudhary from Charles F. Patton Middle School, Unionville/Chadds Ford School District; seventh-grader Aaron Wilson from Kennett Middle School, Kennett Consolidated School District; and eighth-grader Rachel Kealey from St. Maximilian

Kolbe School in West Chester. In the absence of Elberta Clinton, essay contest chair, the ceremony was led by Nancy Jarvis, past regent and chapter national defense chair. Jarvis introduced the students, as well as their family members, teachers and school administrators who were in attendance. She also read a biographical piece about each student. Prior to the students reading their winning essays, Jarvis further explained the premise of the essay contest. “Knowing what materials were available in 1620, what would you have packed to prepare for the trip and starting a new life in the wilderness?” she explained. “After experiencing more than two months at sea then finally landing at Plymouth Colony (in November) 1620, do you think you would have made different choices and why?” Rachel’s essay, titled “Constance’s Journey,” detailed the hardships on the ship, such as the hard bunks to sleep on, lack of food and, most pronounced, the boredom. In the essay, “Constance” talked about how important it was that she packed books in her

knapsack before boarding the ship. “(Books) kept me sane during the voyage, and I believed they would keep me from feeling the mental effects of malnourishment, since my mind (would) be preoccupied,” the essay stated. “I would’ve liked to say that I felt guilty for filling potential food storage with literature, but I didn’t. The words were food to my soul. I could deal with the physical effects of hunger as long as my mind was fulfilled.” In her essay, Noori talked about life after landing in the New World, including the cold temperatures and lack of available food. Further, she noted that the Pilgrims lived on the ship during the winter months since there was a lack of housing. “After about two months at sea, (we) have finally landed on the shores of Cape Cod wishing (we) had been better prepared for the harsh trip,” the essay stated. In Aaron’s essay, he wrote about the supplies he would have brought if he had been a passenger on the Mayflower. “There are many items I would bring on the Mayflower,” the essay stated. “Hunting supplies, cooking implements, building tools, farming equipment and clothing material would all be important items to bring on the long

journey to ensure my survival.” Jarvis presented each student with a certificate and a medal. Winners were also presented with certificates by Toni Keg from the office of Sen. Andy Dinniman and by John McNichol from the office of Sen. Tom Killion. The local DAR chapter’s next scheduled event will be on Monday, March 9, at noon when it honors the recipients of the Good Citizens Award at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The DAR is open to women age 18 and up who are able to provide proof of their ancestral connection to those who served in the American Revolution. For more information, readers may visit www.ccdar.wordpress.com. Pictured on front: Winners of the American History Essay Contest presented by the Chester County DAR are (front, from left) seventhgrader Aaron Wilson, sixthgrader Noori Choudhary and eighth-grader Rachel Kealey. YMCA Welcomes New Executive

Rich Przywara

R055694

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) recently welcomed Rich Przywara as its new chief operating officer. Przywara was the senior vice president for operations at Ashley Addiction Treatment in Maryland prior to joining the YMCA, but he is a familiar face in the Chester County area. Previously, he served as executive director of the West Chester University Foundation and Student Housing, a position he held for more than 10 years. In this role, he excelled in both fundraising for the university and the operations of four student housing units, totaling 3,000 beds. For the housing units, he secured funding, oversaw construction and then led the operations and maintenance. Przywara also spent time as the general manager of the Department of Special Services for New Castle, Del., during which time he also served as the first chief of staff to county executive Chris Coons, now a U.S. senator. Przywara has nine years of YMCA experience with the YMCA of Central Maryland as the executive director of the Harford County and White Marsh YMCAs, and he also served the YMCA of Delaware as director of financial development after starting as the director of youth development. Rich is married to Maribeth, the development and membership director at the Delaware Nature Society. They have two children, Chris, 17, and Cami, 10. YGBW, an association of eight YMCAs serving Chester County, is a nonprofit organization committed to building community. YGBW strives to nurture the potential of every child, promote healthy living and foster social responsibility through life-changing programs for all.
