Lindsay started as the deacon in charge at the church last October after being recommended by the bishop and taking part in an interview process with the church leadership. “Deacons cannot celebrate Communion, so we have not had Communion since Oct. 3,” Lindsay said. “We have been offering prayers for Sunday morning, so that will change to a complete Mass. Octoraro Watershed Association To Host Photo Contest BY FRANCINE FULTON
mateur photographers are invited to participate in the annual Octoraro Watershed Association (OWA) Photography Contest by submitting photos taken in the watershed area. Last year, more than 60 photographs were submitted by 24 photographers. A photo depicting a red-breasted merganser duck on the Octoraro Reservoir taken by Michael Rucci of Cochranville was the Best of Show entry. “Each (photo) was taken in the Octoraro watershed and each one showcased the scenery, landscape, people and fun things that people do to enjoy the Octoraro Creek and its tributaries,” said Chotty Sprenkle, contest coordinator. This year, entrants are being asked to submit their photos in two formats: digitally and an 8-by10-inch hard copy mounted on foam or hard cardboard. “We are
people enjoying the Octoraro Creek and its tributaries; and Trailcam photographs captured on remote cameras. Monetary prizes and ribbons will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in all categories. There will also be a ribbon and monetary prize given to the Best of Show winner and a ribbon awarded for People’s Choice. Digital copies should be emailed to csprenkle9@gmail.com. Lindsay said he was very impressed when meeting with the church leadership and the congregation, especially when learning about the church’s involvement with local community outreach. “I really liked the church. We are a very small parish in comparison to others, but it is a very active community of people,” he pointed out. “The people that go to church here are very involved in the workings of the church, running the Sunday school and providing outreach to the community. It was the people who attracted me.” He noted that the church is a member of Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO) and is involved with The Parkesburg POINT youth center, where volunteers cook and serve meals. “PCCO and The POINT is where Ascension attaches itself to the larger Parkesburg community,” he said. “PCCO is a really good organization of

The showcase will be held in the high school auditorium during the school day for juniors and seniors. A second show, open to the entire community at no charge, will be held that evening beginning at 6 p.m. in the junior high MTR room. Food donations will be collected that night for the food cupboard. “(The girls) have already picked out their dresses,” said Tina O’Connor, GRTW adviser, a licensed professional counselor from Experience Positive Therapy in Parkesburg. “This year we will have a red carpet. There will be music and lots of fun.” The backdrop for the showcase will be created by members of Girl Scout Troop 415 as a community service project. Tracey Polito from Kacie’s Cause will be the master of ceremonies for the event, and she will present information about the girls and give a description of their outfits. Polito will also talk about Kacie’s

Together, Kacie’s Cause and GRTW run Kacie’s Kloset at the high school, offering a wide assortment of donated prom gowns in all sizes and styles. There are also shoes, purses and a small selection of tuxedos. “Dresses are (sorted) by size, and we have racks in there that hold the shoes and accessories. It looks like a store,” O’Connor said, noting that dress donations from the community are added to the room on an ongoing basis. GRTW is an after-school mentoring program that meets on Mondays. “We work on self-esteem, confidence and accepting each other as we are,” O’Connor explained. “This year’s theme has been explaining what success is, what beauty is and what strength is.” O’Connor believes that walking down the runway is something that should be celebrated, and she encourages the community to attend the showcase. “I want (people) to come out and support the bravery and courage of these girls. The Outdoorsman Ministry Group at the Christian Life Center (CLC) in Lincoln University will present its annual Sportsman’s Event at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 109 Gypsy Hill Road, Landenberg, on Saturday, March 12, beginning at 4 p.m. The guest speaker will be outdoorsman Steve Chapman, an avid hunter, as well as a Christian musician and author. In addition to the speaker, the evening will include a traditional wild game covered dish dinner, a silent auction and a display of outdoor products. All attendees will also be entered into a drawing to win door prizes. Doors will open at 4 p.m. Dinner, as well as the silent auction, will run from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Chapman’s presentation will begin in the sanctuary at 6:45 p.m., followed by the announcement of door prize winners and silent auction winners. Stand,” which has sold nearly 300,000 copies; “The Hunter’s Cookbook,” which was written with his wife, Annie Chapman; and “Great Hunting Stories.” Chapman and his wife are also award-winning Christian musicians. “He has a whole presentation and for one of his slides/videos he will bring his guitar and sing,” said organizer Steve Shuster. Shuster noted that the 2020 and 2021 events were canceled because of the pandemic. “One of the things that has been a challenge is, ‘Should we have the event or not?’” said Shuster. “People have been isolated and we need to connect. We are going to be smart and safe about it. We need to be in the community because people have not had a chance to be together.” This year, the event will be offered free of charge for the first time; donations will be accepted, however. This is also the first time that the event will be held at Cornerstone Church. It was moved because the CLC church began offering a Saturday night service. “We booked (Chapman) three years in advance. Originally, we had him scheduled for 2020 and 2021 and were able to work with him and his schedule (this year),” noted Shuster. “He has a great story and message.” Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, dessert or side dish in a quantity to feed at least five people. For food safety, hot covered dishes must be prepared on the day of the event and be at a safe internal temperature. Electrical outlets will be available for slow cookers. Reservations for the Sportsman’s Event are requested, although walk-ins will be welcome. For more information and a link to register, visit www.clcfamily.church/calendar and scroll down to “CLC Sportsman Event.” A link to register is also available at www.face book.com/CLCFamily.church in a post dated Feb. 18.

Benchmark FCU Launches Commercial Banking Division Benchmark Federal Credit Union (FCU) recently announced the launch of a commercial banking division that specializes in commercial lending services, commercial real estate and small business loans. To celebrate, Benchmark FCU is introducing a small business financing offer for non-real estate loans of $25,000 to $500,000 with funding in as little as one week. It is suitable for businesses that require immediate financing due to unforeseen circumstances like an equipment failure or major building repair. Loan terms are one to five years, and loans are fully amortizing. According to Daniel J. Machon Jr., president and CEO, Benchmark FCU’s commercial banking division has been developing gradually since the onset of the pandemic, when Benchmark FCU launched several programs to support small businesses and nonprofits. This support included up to $1 million in interest-free loans for Chester County businesses through the Benchmark Cares Loan Program. Benchmark FCU’s commercial banking division also offers ultimate business checking with no minimum deposit, free digital banking and up to 200 free transactions every month. Commercial lending services include commercial mortgages, commercial real estate secured lines of credit, residential investment property mortgages, term loans, as well as small business loans with better rates and fewer fees. With three branches located in Westtown, downtown West Chester and Phoenixville, Benchmark FCU has more than 5,000 shared branches; a total of 2,000 self-service locations across all 50 states; and refunds on ATM withdrawal fees nationwide. Benchmark FCU was recently honored with the 2021 Corporate Partner Award by The Arc of Chester County and was named the 2020 Business of the Year by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce.
