Parkesburg Lions Club sets bench dedication, Easter events

The Parkesburg Lions Club has set several special events in March - a community bench dedication and Easter activities.

A community bench dedication to honor the late Charlie Scott will take place on Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m. The bench will be placed at Dyer’s Deli, located at 5739 W. Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg. All are welcome.

“Charlie passed away in December. He was a lifelong resident of Parkesburg and longtime member of the Parkesburg Lions Club,” noted Robin McKenna, Lions Club president. “The brief dedication will take place on what would have been Charlie’s birthday.”

Scott served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed in Germany. He was later employed in the maintenance department at the former ServiStar Warehouse in Parkesburg, He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Church in Coatesville and was a former member of the Keystone Masonic Lodge 569 F. & A.M. of Parkesburg. As a member the Parkesburg Lions Club, he served as a Lion Tamer, which is the person responsible for keeping the club’s property and equipment in order.

The Parkesburg Lions Club has been collecting plastics to earn free benches as part of a recycling program offered by the Trex Company. The Lions Club placed its first bench in the community at the bus stop near the Parkesburg Library, 105 West St. It was dedicated to the late Jim Norton, a longtime Lions Club

member and a past member of the Parkesburg Library Board.

The Lions Club also provided a “Buddy Bench” at Octorara Elementary School, which is available for students who are in need of friends or playmates.

Other benches were placed in memory of Joann Carmen, who was the office manager of the

Parkesburg VFW, and Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde, director of the Wilde Funeral Home. Wilde was a past president of the Parkesburg Lions Club and was very active in the community.

The community is welcome to donate plastics for the bench program. Items such as grocery bags, bread bags and dry cleaning

All things chocolate

For people who love chocolate (and who doesn’t?), Oxford United Methodist Church (OUMC), will present its ninth annual Chocolate Festival on Saturday, March 9, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The event will include chocolate tastings and a baking contest.

“People can join us as a baker or a taster,” said Patty Reese, event chairperson.

During the Chocolate Festival, which is being presented by

Women of Faith (formerly the Oxford United Methodist Women), visitors will pay a fee and receive five tickets. Each ticket will allow that person to select a chocolate treat to enjoy. Additional tickets may be purchased for a nominal fee.

“(Attendees) will get a free takeout container and that enables them to go around and collect their chocolate,” said Reese, noting that no outside containers will be permitted.

The Girls Run the World Club (GRTW) at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School will hold its annual Dress to Express Positive Prom Showcase on Friday, March 8. During the event, students will be able to view some of the prom dresses that are available for “purchase” from Kacie’s Kloset in exchange for donations of nonperishable food items for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

The showcase will be held

in the high school auditorium during lunch from 10:27 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. In years past, the showcase featured a runway fashion show, but this year, students will be able to view a display of various garments during their scheduled lunch periods.

The following is an excerpt from the November 2023 presentation by Faye Hershey Mummau at a historical society meeting. Faye was accompanied to the meeting by her brother, Art Hershey, former state representative.

“I will always treasure the memories I have and experiences I had growing up by the Pequea Creek (in the 1940s and 1950s).

“The (framed) house we lived in was without hot water or a bathroom. Water for cooking was carried from a cistern and poured into a water tank on the cookstove. The only other heat we had was a coal stove in the dining room where we ate. The kitchen was too small for

a table large enough to seat eleven - five boys, four girls and my parents. The formal dining room was used mostly as a sewing room where Mother sewed the girls’ dresses, slips and PJs, as well as the endless mending that seemed to never be finished.

“The stovepipe from the stove in the dining room went through the ceiling to a small room upstairs - the baby’s room. It was the only heated upstairs room. All the other rooms were cold in winter. We four girls slept in two bedrooms; our closet was two sets of orange crates with a rod between for hanging clothes behind a curtain. The boys slept at the other end of the house with a separate stairway.

“Monday was always washday. On Saturday afternoon, the oldest boys had filled two big iron kettles with water and placed them over the fire in the washhouse. On Monday morning, on his way to the barn, Dad started the fire underneath those kettles. By the time barn chores and breakfast were over, the water was hot enough for Mother to tackle the huge pile of laundry.

“The washing machine and rinse tub were filled with the hot water. Homemade soap went into the washtub. White clothes and bed linen went into the first load. The last load was the very dirty work clothes. By noon, the wash lines were full and blowing in the breeze. Those clothes needing to be ironed were dampened, rolled tightly

Children will be asked to return the plastic eggs to the Lions Club before leaving the park.

and placed in a plastic bag and into the refrigerator.

“As soon as we girls were old enough, we helped with the ironing, beginning with Dad’s red and blue handkerchiefs and our own, made from worn-out dresses. Remember, there were no paper tissues back then. When my older sister came home from school on Tuesdays, she would begin ironing the piles of shirts and feed bag dresses.

“Mother was very organized, and she put us to work according to our abilities. Our household chores were designated: cleaning, lawn mowing and weeding the garden in addition to the kitchen work for girls and barn work for the boys. Our work was to be finished by Saturday noon. The afternoon was spent preparing for Sunday: taking baths, polishing shoes and studying our Sunday school lessons.

“When we were small, Mother would fill a wooden tub, place it near the coal stove and give us each our bath behind a curtain she

hung on chairs. As we got older, we took basins to our bedrooms or took a shower in the wash house, using a bucket with a spigot at the bottom and hung on a beam. The challenge was getting finished before the bucket emptied.”

WordUP to host free movie screening

WordUP Community Ministries has planned a family-friendly event on Saturday, March 16, that will include a free showing of Disney’s live-action adaptation of “The Lion King,” along with food and a craft.

Activities will take place at WordUP, a nondenominational church located at 160 Route 41, Gap, in the Dutchland Inc. building.

An Easter craft will take place at 3 p.m., and attendees will be provided with hot dogs. The movie will begin at 4 p.m., and it will be shown on two 65-inch television screens.

Disney’s “The Lion King” follows the story of a young lion named Simba, who is the crown prince of an African savanna. When his father, Mufasa, dies in an accident staged by his uncle, Scar, Simba feels responsible for his father’s death and must overcome his fear of taking responsibility as the rightful heir to the throne. After growing up and meeting new friends along the way, Simba returns to challenge Scar and take his place as the king. The movie’s themes include self-discovery and redemption.

Free popcorn, candy and water will be available during the movie.

According to pastor Buck

Mowday, the event is being held following a successful showing of the movie “Fireproof” last fall, which was designed for married adults and couples. He noted that attendees at that event included congregation members as well as the public.

“We want to reach out to the community,” said Mowday. “It is an opportunity to do something together as a family. And it’s a movie kids will love.”

Mowday noted that the event is open to families with children of all ages. No child care will be provided.

In addition to outreaches to the community, WordUP offers an in-person Sunday worship service at 10:45 a.m. The service is also livestreamed on www.youtube .com. The Sunday WordUP cafe, offering coffee and snacks, is open prior to the service at 10 a.m. For more information, visit www.wordupcommunity ministries.org or www .facebook.com/WordUP CommunityMinistries.

Those with questions may contact Mowday at 717-330-0561 or buck mowday@gmail.com.

entry must include chocolate as one ingredient. Categories to be judged are cakes, cookies, cupcakes, candy/fudge and other chocolate desserts. There will also be a children’s category for bakers age 16 and under. No items that need to be refrigerated will be accepted.

All entrants are asked to bring a complete batch of their favorite chocolate dessert, such as a whole cake and an entire batch of candy, cookies or cupcakes, in a disposable container. There is no fee to enter, and there is no limit on the number of entries per person.

“If you wish to enter the competition, please bring your chocolate entries between 8:30 and 10 a.m., where local professional chocolatiers will begin judging promptly at 10 a.m.,” Reese explained. After judging is complete, the entries will be broken down into separate servings for ticket holders to select.

At 2 p.m., ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third places, as well as honorable mention, in each

category. The Best in Show winner will be awarded a gift basket.

Those who attend the Chocolate Festival will also have an opportunity to win prizes. “We will fill different glass containers with candies or some type of chocolate and people can guess the amount,” Reese said. “Whoever gets the closest wins that container.”

Proceeds from the Chocolate Festival will be used by the Women of Faith group, which distributes funds to different mission projects throughout the year both locally and internationally. Past recipients have included the Oxford Area Neighborhood Services Center and people affected by the war in the Ukraine.

“We also helped victims from the fire in Oxford in September,” Reese noted.

OUMC, 18 Addison St., Oxford, is located at the corner of Market and Addison streets. For more information about the event, call the church office at 610-932-9698 or visit www.facebook.com/ PastorBern/events.

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library will present their annual spring book sale in the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana.

The sale will be held on Thursday, March 14, from noon to 7 p.m. and then continue during regular library hours on Friday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, March 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free. New this spring is a preview sale that will be open to the public for a small admission fee on Wednesday, March 13, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The entire inventory of the Read Moore Bookstore will be for sale. Special items will be marked separately; however, most items will be nominally priced.

every day of the sale. Bags will be provided by the library for a set price.

help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite.

Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of

Lyme disease.

The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information can be found at http:// tinyurl.com/Tickborne DiseaseArtContest24.

Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at the state Capitol in May. In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR.

Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease cases in the nation. Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. When exploring outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors.

After being outside, people should check themselves and their children and pets thoroughly for ticks and remove any that they find. Then, people should shower to help remove any ticks they may have missed. Clothes may be put in the dryer on high heat to help kill any ticks that might still be stuck to the clothes.

Commissioners approve water resources plan

Following a public hearing, Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe approved Watersheds 2045, a plan put forth by the Chester County Water Resources Authority (CCWRA). The plan addresses the county’s water resource issues, such as stormwater and flooding, pollution mitigation and prevention, recreational access, and sustainable water supplies. The original Watersheds plan was adopted in 2002. The planning process for Watersheds 2045 involved a

Wine tasting fundraiser planned

The Greystone Auxiliary will host a wine tasting event featuring former Eagles coach and NFL Hall of Fame honoree Dick Vermeil. The event will be held at Radley Run Country Club, 1100 Country Club Road, West Chester, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.

Vermeil will feature his wines from the Napa Valley in California. He began his foray into winemaking in 1999, and today Vermeil Wines offers 11 different wines.

The event will also include a silent auction and a giveaway drawing for a 14-karat diamond necklace donated by Kaplan Jewelers; tickets may be purchased for the drawing. Vermeil will be joined by former Eagles players, including Kevin Reilly.

The Greystone Auxiliary was formed in 2004 as one of 10 branches of the Women’s Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital.

The Greystone Auxiliary contributes to the Women’s Auxiliary’s pledge of $2 million toward the hospital’s goal to bring together the most stateof-the-art services in diagnostics, treatment, and academic advancements in breast health.

The Women’s Auxiliary was established in 1893, just one year after the hospital’s founding, and includes women ranging in age, background, and life experiences. The Auxiliary has long supported new programs and services to improve the health of the community.

The Auxiliary has a membership of over 300 people and raises funds through various special events and projects.

9-1-1 Center transitions to new technology

The Chester County Department of Emergency Services (DES) transitioned its Emergency

Communications Center to Next Generation 911, the statewide emergency services internet protocol

network from Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA).

Next Generation 911 is a faster and more efficient way for the county’s public safety answering point (PSAP) - the 911 call center - to receive emergency calls and associated caller information and, when needed, to transfer them to other 911 call centers in the commonwealth.

Through the new fiberbased network, callers’ locations are identified and calls are routed to the appropriate 911 call center using geographic information system (GIS) map data, noted Bill Messerschmidt, director of Chester County’s DES.

Additionally, the new technology makes way for call centers to potentially receive photos and videos in the future.

Chester County’s 911 telecommunicators complete more than 500,000 dispatches for emergency personnel and equipment every year, providing support to 53 police agencies, 40 fire/rescue agencies and 26 emergency medical services agencies.

The update was made possible through PEMA’s interconnectivity funding. Chester County follows two other counties in southeastern Pennsylvania - Berks and Delaware counties - in moving to Next Generation 911.

Metz included on dean’s list

Tyler Metz of Gap has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2023 semester at Florida Institute of Technology.

To be included on the dean’s list, a student must complete 12 or more graded credits in a semester with a semester GPA of at least 3.4.

CCEDC names Fiorentino to Hall of Fame

West Chester University (WCU) president Christopher M. Fiorentino will be inducted into the Chester County Hall of Fame by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) on Wednesday, May 15. He will be honored before an anticipated audience of more than 400 business leaders at the Phoenixville Foundry, 2 N. Main St., Phoenixville.

Fiorentino is the 15th president of WCU. He has led the university through a nationwide shift in high school demographics as well as a pandemic, strengthened enrollment to more than 17,000 students and welcomed the largest incoming first-year class in 2023.

He grew up in Langhorne and Levittown with a father who was a World War II veteran and a mother who was a native of Barbados. Fiorentino’s life in Chester County began in 1983 when, at age 29, he accepted a one-year

position teaching economics at WCU that became a tenured faculty position and eventually the role of dean of business and public affairs less than a decade later. Under his leadership, WCU achieved international AACSB accreditation for its College of Business and Public Management in 2006.

Through it all, Fiorentino and WCU have collaborated with CCEDC on more than two dozen initiatives, including recent endeavors like the Business Resource Center in Coatesville, postsecondary education opportunities through CCEDC’s Project Reconnect initiative, industry partnership advancement through the Innovation Technology Action Group, entrepreneurship though CCEDC’s Ideas x Innovation Network and ongoing participation in CCEDC’s Global Business Advisory Group.

Anyone who would like

to join CCEDC’s Chester County Hall of Fame celebration may learn about sponsorship packages including tickets by visiting https://ccedcpa.com/ event/ccedc-hall-of-fame -celebration/ or contacting Tracey Oberholtzer at toberholtzer@ccedcpa.com.

Individual tickets will be available starting Wednesday, March 20.
