Parkesburg Library Announces Book Sale, Activities BY FRANCINE FULTON

As part of an effort to be an active presence in the community, volunteers from Parkesburg Free Library participated in the Follow Your Heart to Main Street event on Feb. 13 by holding a membership drive and book sale. The library was one of many Parkesburg businesses and organizations that were on hand at The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center during the day. The special event also included vendors that set up in

businesses along Main Street, a Valentine’s scavenger hunt and shopping discounts and incentives by local businesses. Next up for the library will be its book sale on Saturday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We have a small section of the library set up the Book Corner - where you can come in any day we are open and look for books for sale. For our big book sale, we set up tables right in the (main part of the) library,” explained library staff member Patricia Lee Prange-Smith. See Library pg 3

Because of the pandemic, members of the 2020-21 Girls Advisory Board (GAB) met virtually. GAB recently awarded $19,000 in funding to five local nonprofit organizations.

Girls Advisory Board Awards Grants ach year, a group of young women from Chester County high schools are tasked with an important assignment - to award grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies that target the needs of women and girls. The students are part of the Girls Advisory Board (GAB) program, which has been presented annually for the past 25 years by the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls (CCFWG). GAB is a nationally recognized girls’ grantmaking program open to high school girls entering 10th and 11th grades. Members of the 2020-21 GAB class recently awarded $19,000 in funding to five local nonprofit organizations. The recipients are the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, Alianzas de Phoenixville, The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, The Clinic in Phoenixville and La Comunidad Hispana in Kennett Square, now known as LCH Health and Community Services. Girls are invited to apply for the

continued. “I think it was challenging. Whenever they went there in person, they could feel like they were a part of what was going on. They were not meeting clients but meeting the leaders and talking to them. It is more powerful to be there in person. It was harder virtually, but it was all we could do this year.” This year’s wrap-up ceremony, where the grantees are highlighted, was held virtually on March 9. Last year, the event took place at the Chester County History Center in West Chester. Kelly said an added benefit of the program is that the girls become friends through the grant-making process. “They remain in touch, which is nice to see,” she stated. “One of the things the girls like the most about the program is meeting other peers that are like-minded and share their interests. It’s a powerful part of the program.” Over the past 25 years, CCFWG has awarded more than $3.5 million to 80 local nonprofit organizations. For more information, readers may visit www.ccfwg.org.

program in May, and applicants are chosen over the summer. The group begins meeting in September at the start of the school year. “ We have 20 members on the GAB,” noted Maeve Kelly, GAB communications and program associate. “They are from school districts all over the county, and they represent different towns.” She noted that the grants are awarded each year thanks to an endowment that was established by the CCFWG 25 years ago. Because of the pandemic, the girls had an even greater challenge this year. Most meetings and visits to the agencies that applied for the grants were done virtually. “The first few meetings were in person outdoors with social distance precautions in place when the weather would allow. After that, they met virtually,” Kelly said. “(In a typical year), the girls decide where they want to do site visits, and they would go the nonprofit, meet with the leaders there and learn more about the organization in person.” “This year, there were no on-site visits; they were all virtual,” Kelly

Compeer Program Seeks Volunteer Friends

Grant To Focus On Families The Health and Welfare Foundation of Southern Chester County (HWFSCC) has provided a $10,000 grant to Maternal & Child Health Consortium (MCHC) for a new collaborative program with La Comunidad Hispana (LCH) and Chester County Food Bank. The grant will support a bilingual Diabetes and Heart Disease Prevention Program (DHDPP) for economically disadvantaged mothers and their children and families living in Southern Chester County.

The program leverages MCHC’s existing Healthy Start and Family Center home visiting programs’ resources and infrastructure, along with group workshops provided to participants, their families, and the broader community. LCH will provide physical education by Zoom for the program, and Chester County Food Bank will provide healthy food boxes and seedlings along with potting soil for container gardens in the spring.

HWFSCC launched a Healthy Family Living Challenge in February 2020. The intent was to challenge local nonprofits to develop a collective impact approach to support healthy family living through increased access and engagement with healthy food and physical activity opportunities. After a pause related to the pandemic, this is the first phase of the challenge. For more information, readers may contact Joan Holliday at dochollisv@aol.com.

“This is the time (people) really need support; there is a lot of anxiety,” said Donna Kueny, program director for Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “There has never been a more appropriate time for staying in touch with people, letting them know someone cares about them and providing hope.”

As part of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Prior to the pandemic, the pairs shared activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie. Currently, most clients and their volunteer friends continue to keep in touch through phone calls, email and texting. “We have not been able to do Zoom only because most of our folks don’t have computers at home,” Kueny noted. Some pairs, however, have been meeting in person at restaurants or for shopping with masks and social distancing in place. Kueny noted that one client and his Compeer friend meet outdoors at local parks to hike. “Everyone is still in contact. more comfortable talking on the phone or through text,” Kueny said. “ We send out CDC guidelines all the time. We suggested they not do a lot of socialization over the holidays. We thought it would be best (for them) to say in touch virtually.” Compeer is in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “Once they are cleared, we set up a date for training. Another date is set to go over some matches,” Kueny explained. “ We are doing training over the phone and sending materials to the volunteers. That is all done virtually now.” Those who are waiting for a match are assigned a “Compeer caller” who calls them once a week to keep in touch. “We did not have a lot of volunteers for the first six months of the pandemic,” Kueny added. “It has just started picking up. We have some young female (volunteers) who just graduated from college who want to give back.” Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional. “The people we accept into the program are working in conjunction with their therapist or case manager,” noted Kueny. “They have been stable in the community for a while, and they have the support of the entire team throughout the whole process.” Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP). It is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations. Art Contest from pg 1 Last year, the artwork was on display for a week at the Exton Chamber of Commerce for judging, and the awards ceremony was held at the same location. This year’s contest has been altered because of the pandemic. “In a typical year, the students had to submit art pieces to us and we had them digitally uploaded as well,” explained Danielle Dougherty, DVCCC director of philanthropic partnerships, one of the contest organizers. “People could vote on social media for the piece they liked the best. It culminated in an in-person reception where we announced first-, secondand third-place winners as chosen by the judges and the People’s Choice Award chosen by everyone via social media. This year, we are doing all of the same things, except the reception (on Saturday, April 10) will be held virtually via Zoom, where we will announce the winners.” Digital images of the artwork will be featured on DVCCC’s social media pages and website, while the art will be on view at the Brow Bar, 131 W. Gay St., West Chester, during the week of Monday through Friday, April 5 to 9. “They have offered their storefront windows for us to display all of the students’

A unique aspect of the book sale and the Book Corner is that shoppers can purchase books by donation only; there are no set prices. “We have people that come in that are very generous, (but) we take whatever people give us,” Prange-Smith said. For the March book sale, books will be sorted by adult fiction and nonfiction, and there will be a section for children’s books, including board books and picture books. Most of the books offered at the sale are donated by the public. Others have been taken out of the library’s circulation. All books are sterilized and put into quarantine for at least a week prior to being sold. Prange-Smith said that future plans call for the library to have mini book sales and membership drives when Parkesburg once again hosts Final Fridays, which offer special activities on Main Street on the last Friday of each month from April through

October. Other library programs are in the works and will begin as soon as pandemic restrictions are lifted. In other news, the library announced the winners of its Guess Jar contest. “Every month we put (out) a jar filled with items that focus on children - candy or stickers,” Prange-Smith explained. “Then, you pay (a nominal fee) and (write down) your name, phone number and your guess. The person who guesses the closest wins the jar. Sometimes we put in pinecones, and in that case, they win a gift certificate to a local business. One month was for an ice cream cone at Bell’s Delites.” February’s Guess Jar winner was Olivia Nerozzi. “We were very excited to learn that Olivia’s brother Angelo was the Guess Jar winner for January,” she added. Parkesburg Free Library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg. For more information, including hours of
