Most recently, Petals Please presented arrangements to staff members at the Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County in observance of Employee Appreciation Day. “We have gifted over 50,000 bouquets to individuals in our community,” Adams reported, noting that the flower distributions continued during the pandemic. “Because the senior care communities were so isolated during COVID, any kind of gesture of kindness was uplifting and so appreciated.” During the pandemic, Petals Please volunteers also began delivering fresh flowers to first responders and staff members at Brandywine Hospital. “It was a small gesture, but really appreciated,” said Adams. member of the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee. “ We also have a sash for Sharon that says ‘Centennial Queen.’ She is going to bring her crown (and) will wear a Victorian gown. We’re encouraging the kids to dress in period garb, but it’s not mandatory.” Christ emphasized that the event is not a beauty contest, Rather, judging will be based on how the youths complete specific sections of the application, which will ask them to describe their community service or volunteer and leadership experiences, as well as what makes them proud to be a resident of Parkesburg. “We are more concerned with (how they show) kindness and the value they give to the community,” said Christ, adding, “Anyone with a Parkesburg mailing address (is eligible). They do not have to (live) inside the borough.” In addition to the crowning ceremony, the queen, king and court will be part of the anniversary parade on Saturday, May 21, at 1 p.m. For more information about the sesquicentennial and a schedule of events, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/ ParkesburgSesquicentennial.

Gardening Program from pg 1 During the event, Cassidy will talk about the characteristics of Victorian gardens and compare them to today’s more common gardens. Society members first met Cassidy during their annual anniversary open house last fall, which highlighted the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place in Christiana. “We had an event on Sept. 11 and we met Mike, who was a re-enactor, and we also found out he is a Master Gardener and he volunteered to (host the lecture),” said society member Kathy Patterson. Cassidy is a Master Gardener volunteer with Penn State Extension and lectures about historic gardens for the Lancaster Master Gardener Speakers Bureau. He is also an active volunteer in the Idea Gardens at Penn State’s farm near Landisville. A former state legislator, Cassidy previously served on the board of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and is a past president of the
Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association and the Maytown Historical Society. He and his wife, Jeanne, restored two log homes in Maytown (circa 1790s and 1810) and designed gardens and outbuildings around them that are appropriate to the 19th century. Their “working garden” includes fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers, including historic varieties and native species that attract birds, bees and butterflies. The lecture will be free, but donations will be accepted. “This is a membership drive initiative for us. If they come to the lecture and enjoy it, we are hoping they will join our group,” Patterson stated. Information about membership will be available at the event. “(Members will be) part of an exciting new future for the Christiana Historical Society. We will be holding community events and historical events,” Patterson said. “Members pay an (annual) membership fee, which gets

With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is pretty small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the 10-acre Berkshire pig farm 23 years ago, but it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a reality. Just before the pandemic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm products bearing the PA Preferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where she grew up. For the Sauders two daughters, helping out on the farm is part of their normal day. From assisting with the births of piglets to

blessed to be able to raise them in this lifestyle and culture. … It’s a passion and a lifestyle that you don’t clock out from,” explained Tina. A florist by trade, Tina had to cut back her hours to focus more time on the farm. When talking about launching the pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting
back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With the popularity of farmhouse style, Tina says, many people think farming is a peaceful way of life, and they romanticize it. See Family pg 5

farming is vast. “It’s so important for us to inspire others to go after their dreams because there were times in our lives that were hardships, and the dream seemed unattainable. One time my husband and I were talking about it, and my husband said, ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be to God,’ and that’s where the name (of the farm) came from.” When asked if she had an advice for those considering farming or achieving any goal, Tina responded, “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a parked car very well.”

Volunteers also had to adapt their flower donation efforts during the pandemic. “Because funeral and weddings were stopped, that source of donated flowers dried up. We reached out to local farmers (in the summer) to cut clippings from their own gardens and bring them to us so we would make arrangements that way,” Adams said. “Interestingly, we found that when weddings were downsized, brides kept their big flower budgets (and) they donated their flowers. They were trying to find a way to do something good in a trying time.” In addition to flowers gleaned from weddings and funerals, the charity also

accepts donations from high school students who attend the prom as part of its “Second Dance, Second Chance” program. “We rescue flowers,” said Adams. “The flowers that we take would likely have been discarded.” Some of the flower arrangements are placed in small vases and teacups, while a majority of them are placed in decorated cans. Volunteers, including local Girl Scout troops, decorate the cans and sometimes help with the distribution of the bouquets at the nursing homes. “(It is) incredibly uplifting not only for those who receive the flowers but the people who create the arrangements,” said Adams. “(We want to provide) something cheerful and bright for senior citizens (and others) to know someone was thinking about them.” For more information about Petals Please, visit www.petalsplease.org or www.facebook.com/petals please.

The Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) will present a St. Patrick’s Daythemed “Shamrock, Shop and Adopt” celebration on Main Street in Parkesburg on Saturday, March 19, from 2 to 7 p.m. During the event, the shops on Main Street will be open and several of them will host craft vendors. Also offered will be food and beverages and children’s activities. Volunteers with Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR) will be on hand with adoptable dogs. Fees collected from vendors will benefit LDAR, a no-kill, foster-based, all-volunteer animal rescue that finds homes for rescued, abused or unwanted pets. “We wanted to do something to help out a local (organization), and Lucky Dawg seemed so fitting.
They are such a great rescue,” said PAC member Jenn Litwin, owner of Memories on Main, 322 Main St., Parkesburg. “We put together a fun event.” Among the Parkesburg businesses that will host craft vendors are Experience Positive Therapy, 226 W. Main St.; Sweet Serendipity Cupcakes and Treats, 217 Main St.; and The Little Shop Next Door, 215 Main St. “(Memories on Main) will (host) Spring House Spirits, a local distillery,” Litwin noted. Donations for LDAR will be accepted during the event. Suggested donations include dog and cat food, treats, toys, bowls, leashes, harnesses, collars, paper towels and bleach. “Lucky Dawg will have adoptable dogs on Main Street where Final Fridays normally take place,” said Litwin. “They are asking the

set on low, and let the breakfast cook overnight. Macronutrient is the scientific term for proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Nutritionists suggest mixing macronutrients in meals to get the most benefits from well-rounded meals. Individuals should aim for 20 grams of protein, 15 to 20 grams of fat, and about 50 grams of carbs, with at least five grams of fiber. Another option is to develop a custom granola. Oats, nuts, and dried fruits can be mixed up to make a signature granola blend. It is easy to eat dry or with milk and makes a quick, healthy breakfast. Individuals can embrace the no-cook overnight oatmeal method. Simply layer oats, Greek yogurt, applesauce or other fruit purees, cinnamon, and almond milk in a mason jar and place it in the refrigerator overnight. The oats will get tender without cooking, and the meal will be ready in the morning. Smoothies are a tasty option. All the prep work for healthy vegetable- and fruitrich smoothies, including chopping and preparing the ingredients, can be done the night before. In the morning, the prepared ingredients can be blended with protein powder or oats and ice. Breakfast burritos offer a portable option. Eggs can be scrambled in advance with diced peppers and onions and stored in containers in the refrigerator. In the morning, the mixture can be placed onto a tortilla, topped with cheese, and heated in a skillet or in the microwave.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful announced that registration is open for the 2022 Pick Up Pennsylvania, a community improvement initiative. A community improvement event may be registered from Tuesday, March 1, through Tuesday, May 31, and receive free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests provided by support from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and PennDOT, while supplies last. Events can include litter cleanups, illegal dump cleanups, community greening and beautification projects, special collections, and education events. Events must be registered to receive free cleanup supplies. As part of this event, the
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association will sponsor trash disposal, free of charge or at a reduced rate, for registered program participants at participating landfills from Friday, April 1, through Saturday, April 30, with prior approval. This spring, all Pennsylvanians are invited to clean up vacant lots, streets, and riverbanks; plant gardens and trees; or mulch a local playground. Through cleaning up litter and making small improvements to shared community spaces, like planting a tree or flowers or painting a community structure, the campaign
aims to help create safer, healthier, and more livable neighborhoods. To host an event, join a nearby event, or inquire about free supplies and trash disposal, visit www.keeppa beautiful.org or contact Michelle Dunn at 877-7723673, ext. 113, or mdunn@ keeppabeautiful.org. “The mission (of Remember America) is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles,” said Dayspring Christian Academy events manager Lisa Becker. “Our hearts first need to be turned to the Lord, and that personal revival extends from us to our family to our community to our state to our nation.” The 2022 Remember America Speaker Series will feature Turning Point USA president and founder Charlie Kirk as the keynote speaker. This year’s presentation, which will include chorale performances and an orator, will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 23. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that organizers have been hoping to have Kirk participate in Remember America. “As I was praying through our short list (of speakers) … I felt education is prominent in people’s thinking right now,” said Stone. “It’s a great time to highlight how education is such an important part of what our country is going through.” Stone noted that it seemed natural to choose Kirk to speak on the importance of education in restoring the country to biblical values. The theme of this year’s event is “Faith. Courage. Liberty.” “It starts with faith (because) in today’s world, Christians are being put in a position where they will choose to be courageous or not,” said Stone. We are calling people to choose courage, and liberty will be the result.” Becker agreed, noting that the theme reflects the study of the country’s foundation, which is at the heart of Remember America. “We are reminding people (that) the founding documents of our nation and the writings of our founders … (had) a biblical world view,” said Becker. She also noted that the faith of the founders was applied to the building of the nation. “When you look at some of our founders and what they have written, you understand these were men of faith who were willing to stand and sacrifice,” she said. “Their faith inspired their courage, and what they endured established liberty like nothing else the world had ever seen.” Three types of tickets are available for the event. Readers may purchase tickets to the dinner and presentation, tickets to the gallery for the presentation only, or tickets to the presentation in a livestreamed format. Tickets are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

Rosies Inspire Wreaths Across America Theme Each year, on National Wreaths Across America Day, millions of Americans come together to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach the next generation about the value of freedom. Gatherings take place in local and national cemeteries in all 50 states. Each year, a new theme is chosen to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. The theme for 2022 is “Find a Way to Serve.” The inspiration for this
year’s theme came from a few different places, including the American Rosie Movement, whose mission is to find and capture the stories of the World War II-era women known as Rosie the Riveters, or simply Rosies. The movement encourages youths to get involved in their own communities to serve in small ways that can make a big impact. As part of this new theme, Wreaths Across America is revamping its educational curriculum working with the American Rosie Move-
ment and other organizations to develop action plans to inspire young people across the country to find a way to serve in 2022 and beyond. In 2021, more than 2.4 million veterans’ wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 3,136 participating locations around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for people’s freedoms. As each wreath was placed, the veteran’s name was said out loud. Wreaths Across America volunteers work yearround to ensure military laid to
rest are remembered, their families and living veterans are honored, and the next generation is taught about the value of freedom. This year, National Wreaths Across America Day will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17. The free event is open to all people. For more information on how to volunteer locally or sponsor a wreath, visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. To follow stories focused on the 2022 theme throughout the year, search for #FindA Way2022 on social media.
