Artwork by Octorara Area School District students from kindergarten through grade 12 will be on display in Parkesburg businesses during the first Parkesburg Art Walk. On Friday, March 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 23, from noon to 4 p.m., eight businesses along the 200 and 300 blocks of Main Street in Parkesburg will have select student artwork on display. said seventh- and eighth-grade art teacher Debbie Ward. Ward brought the idea to the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) after seeing how well the gallery walks in West Chester are received. “We’ve been partnering with the school district on a number of things, and this is just another way that we can help promote Parkesburg and the great things going on in the school district,” PAC member Jenny Alexander said. “It’s exciting that the Parkesburg Action Committee can be branching out in this way. Our whole goal in town is to highlight the great things that happen here.” The art on display will cover a See Art Walk pg 2

Guinea Pig Adoption from pg 1 March is National Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month, and the Humane League of Lancaster County (HLLC), 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will offer a monthlong guinea pig adoption event. Through Sunday, March 31, all guinea pig pet adoption fees will be 50 percent off. Adoption approval is required before any potential adopter can meet with a pet. All potential adopters will be required to go through the same diligent adoption screening process as any other adopter. However, once approved, the pet adoption fee will be reduced. The adoption event provides families with the ability to welcome a new furry friend into their home without needing to pay the standard adoption fee. Throughout the month of March, families can view, select, and meet any guinea pigs that are available for adoption. To view guinea pigs that are available for adoption, readers may visit www.humanepa.org/adoption or stop by daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, readers may call 717-393-6551 or email adoptlancaster@humanepa.org. Art Walk from pg 1 wide variety of subject matter and materials. Some pieces were created in class as part of assignments, and others were made outside class as independent efforts that were then submitted for inclusion in the show. Ward estimates that there will be 100 to 200 pieces on display. “We hope that the community will come out and see the kids’ artwork on display and see the progression of how their artwork grows; it’s amazing,” Alexander said. Octorara students in kindergarten through grade six all have art classes. As they move into junior and senior high school, art remains an option for all students who would like to include it in their schedule as electives. “I encourage every student to take some art classes at the high school,” Ward said. For more information about the Parkesburg Art Walk, readers may search for “Parkesburg Action Committee” on Facebook.

associate member. (Our) professional members include chairman Mark Powell, an equine dentist,” noted Yoder. “Our vice chair, Bill Venditta, was a ringmaster for the Devon Horse Show. Some people have farms (that offer) lessons and programs, and (other professional members are) trainers and groomers. I have a background in the horse industry and an animal science degree and have ridden my whole life.” The club’s biggest fundraisers each year are a spring and fall Paper Chase, which is a trail ride in which riders follow a marked cross-country course. “There are different levels - no jumping, low jumps and high jumps - and it is timed. Whoever comes closest to the average time are the winners,” explained Yoder. This year’s spring Paper Chase will be held on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Plantation Field in Kennett Square. The club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at Northbrook Marketplace (upstairs), 1805 Unionville Wawaset Road, West Chester. Prospective members are welcome to attend. Yoder explained that the PHA is an organization that promotes education about horses, promotes interest in the horse industry and provides educational support to members’ children in the area. It also provides financial support to local horsemen in times of emergency. For example, the membership recently donated $1,000 to a local trainer who had an injury and was not a member of the club. New members are always welcome. Ownership of a horse is not required. “You just have to have a love of horses and a desire to help others,” Yoder remarked. She noted that club members come from throughout Chester County. “We have a member in Elverson and quite few (members) in West Grove, as well as Coatesville, Honey Brook, West Chester and Downingtown - of all different age groups,” she said, noting that members pay yearly dues. Junior memberships are available, as are associate and professional memberships. “I am an

(PHA) recently presented Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines with a $1,000 donation. Ryerss Farm, a nonprofit organization located on 387 acres in Pottstown, is home to 80 retired and rescued horses. To reside at the farm, horses must be over the minimum age of 20. “In order to keep costs down and to be more self-sustainable, a portion of the property is farmed for hay and straw. This year, due to an unusually wet season, their straw crop failed, and they were forced to solicit additional donations to cover the cost of purchasing replacement straw,” explained PHA member Jennifer Yoder. “At the January meeting, the club unanimously voted to send a $1,000 donation to help, because without horses, there would be no horsemen.” PHA members and club officers presented the donation to Ryerss Farm animal welfare manager Amber Slaymaker and weekend caregiver Erin Renski on Feb. 24. During their visit, PHA members were given a tour of the farm and were able to meet many of the residents. “Reading the history of each resident that is mounted on their stalls was fascinating and heartbreaking at times,” noted Yoder. “Some are brought in by their caring owners, some are rescues

Although a woman’s right to vote is universally accepted now, there was a time in the history of the United States when this idea was considered a radical change to the U.S. Constitution. Addressing the topic of the 19th amendment, which granted women this right, was the task of local students who took part in the American History Essay Contest presented annually by the Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). During a DAR meeting on March 11 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, Elberta Clinton, essay contest chair, announced the winners of the contest: Kenadee Carlson, a sixth-grade student at Peirce Middle School, West Chester; Allie Meyer, a seventh-grade student at St. Agnes School, West Chester; and Suhan Neema, an eighth-grade student at the Charles F. Patton Middle School, Kennett Square.

Clinton introduced the students, as well as their family members, teachers and school administrators who were in attendance. She also read a biographical piece about each student. Prior to the students reading their winning essays, Clinton explained the premise of the essay contest. “Imagine you are living in 1919 while the women’s suffrage campaigns were having impact on Americans politically and socially,” she stated. “Discuss the pros and cons of this new amendment the U.S. Congress has passed.” She noted that specific criteria were taken into consideration, such as grammar, historical accuracy and bibliographical references. In her essay, Kenadee wrote a series of letters between a mother and a daughter, named Anna Miller, who was living in Washington, D.C. The letters, which Kenadee dated from June 4, 1919, through Oct. 15, 1919, illustrate Anna’s feelings about the amendment that ranged from excitement to skepticism. “I

believe that there are wondrous things to come out of the new amendment,” the one letter stated. “Imagine the possibilities.” Later, however, the letters question whether or not the women’s protests were worth all the effort. “Many see the suffragists as unpatriotic and look to them as if they were the enemy of the war,” the letter stated. “I fear becoming another victim of those opposed against our rights. There are so many amazing things to come of the amendment, but I fear there are also awful ones as well.” Allie titled her essay “The Women’s Suffrage Campaign Breaking Down Barriers: Gaining a Voice.” Her essay dictated the observations of a young girl living in 1919. Allie cited the courageous women of the era, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone and Susan B. Anthony. “Because of the courage and perseverance these women never failed to show, girls like myself now feel as if they, and their voice, matter,”

the essay stated. “We are human beings whose voices matter and deserve to be heard.” In Suhan’s essay, she wrote a letter from a fictional person named Ruth Johnson to an old friend named Mary. In the letter, Ruth attempts to convince Mary, a nonbeliever in the amendment, that allowing women to vote is the right thing to do. “Giving women the vote could lead to them voting in more women in office,” she wrote. “Isn’t it fair that women start representing the interest of women, just as men have represented the interests of men for so long? I know you might think me crazy, but could you imagine one day there being a female president?” Clinton presented each student with a certificate and a medal. Winners were also presented with certificates by Toni Keg from the office of Sen. Andy Dinniman and by John McNichol from the office of Sen. Tom Killion. Pictured on front: Winners of the American History Essay Contest presented by the Chester County DAR are (from left) eighth-grader Suhan Neema, seventh-grader Allie Meyer and sixth-grader Kenadee Carlson.

American Revolution (DAR) during a ceremony held on March 11 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester. Beverly Lawler, chairperson of the Good Citizen Committee, explained that the honor is presented annually to students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The students are chosen for the honor by their respective high schools. “They have been selected by their schools because of their contributions to both their schools and their communities,” Lawler said. “DAR chooses to recognize these students because they will become leaders of the future. These students are very bright and multitalented. I was amazed at how much they are already contributing to our society.” During the event, Michaela and the other Good Citizens were given an opportunity to talk

to live drug-free. “Through my involvement with the Octorara Heroes program, I have been able to spend time with fourth-grade students sharing my experiences about living a healthy lifestyle one that is drug- and alcoholfree,” said Michaela. “In each interaction with these students, I have been encouraged by their enthusiasm for living life and learning.” Lawler provided a brief history of the Good Citizen Award, which was established in 1934 and originally bestowed upon only one student per state. By 1952, the award was expanded so that each high school could select one Good Citizen honoree. Each Good Citizen was presented with a certificate and a lapel pin. “The rim contains 13 stars, representing the 13 original Colonies,” Lawler explained. “The band of blue identifies our society, and there are four books on the

lapel pin, titled dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. These are characteristics of a Good Citizen.” Toni Keg from Sen. Andy Dinniman’s office and John McNichol from Sen. Tom Killion’s office also presented the students with certificates. In addition to Michaela, other Good Citizens included the following students: Miriam Saadeh, B. Lancaster County, along with 12 other southeastern Pennsylvania counties, is currently under quarantine for the spotted lanternfly. All residents and businesses must comply with the regulations, and a spotted lanternfly permit is required for any business working within and/or moving goods in and out of the quarantine zone. This includes farm businesses such as nurseries, greenhouses, woodworking shops, and others that sell materials that could contain eggs or young or adult spotted lanternflies. Each affected business needs to have a supervisor, a manager, or the owner complete the required training and take a 20question exam. Free online training, including the examination, can be found at https:// extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly-permit-training. A series of free training and testing sessions is being offered in Lancaster County for businesses that do not have access to the online training. The dates and locations of these on-site sessions are Thursday, March 21, at 10 a.m. at Daniel’s Farm Store, 324 Glenbrook Road, Leola; Friday, March 29, at 9 a.m. at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster; Wednesday, April 3, at 9 a.m. at Gideon King Hardware, 466 Elam Road, Kinzer; Wednesday, April 17, at 10 a.m. at Daniel’s Farm Store; and Wednesday, April 24, at 9 a.m. at the Paradise Township Building, 2 Township Road, Paradise. People interested in taking one of these free on-site trainings need to register by contacting Brandon Boyer at 717-7725220 or brandonboy@pa.gov.
