WISHING YOU A BLESSED AND JOY FILLED EASTER

Tutors Sought To Help Students Achieve Their Goals BY FRANCINE FULTON

Willow (left photo) and Teddy Bear (right photo) are currently in foster care and are available for adoption through the Lifesaving Pet Rescue of Chester County Facebook page.

Cats, Kittens Seeking Forever Homes hose interested in providing a forever home to a cat or kitten currently in foster care are invited to check out the Lifesaving Pet Rescue of Chester County Facebook page started by Josie Davis of Atglen. Davis fosters for pets and decided to start the page as way to find homes for her rescues. Currently, Davis fosters cats for Angie’s Stray Foundation, founded by Ruth Jenkins of Oxford; Centerville Pet Rescue; and the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County.

T

“I foster for Ruth, which is essentially how I got started,” Davis explained. “Ruth also volunteered at LaMancha (Animal Rescue of Coatesville) and we connected through there. I have been fostering for three years and Ruth has been doing this for 20 years. I do the Lifesaving Pet Rescue (page) to let the community know who is available for adoption.” Featured on the page right now is Teddy Bear, an older cat who is up to date with vaccines, has been neutered and is feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FELV) negative.

“He was found living under a porch in Parkesburg,” said Davis. “He is a sweet old boy who loves to sit next to you on the couch. He uses the litter box without issue. Teddy deserves a forever home; I hope he can find his person.” Also available is Willow, a 7-month-old neutered male who is up to date on vaccines. “He has been in foster care since he was small. He is really in need of a forever home,” said Davis. Those interested in adopting Teddy or Willow must complete an application and provide personal and veterinarian references. Those

who adopt a pet are asked to make a suggested donation. “I have an application (through) Angie’s Stray Foundation. (Ruth) named the rescue in honor of her late dog, Angie,” Davis noted. The Facebook page also features other animals offered for adoption through the Brandywine Valley SPCA, among other rescue groups. “I try to help network,” noted Davis. “You want to see (the pets) do well.” Davis said that because of COVID-19, the kitten population has increased because some spay and neuter programs ceased operations during the pandemic.

annual “CAMP-aign,” which is designed to ensure that every child in the community has the opportunity to attend YGBW’s summer camp program. Financial assistance is provided to ensure no one is ever turned away from the Y due to an inability to pay. YGBW is working to raise at least $21,000 from the Run for Good, with additional fundraising efforts planned in support of its “CAMP-aign.” “ We are hoping for 300 runners or walkers,” said Cavallero, adding that YMCA branches are seeing an increase of activity by members. “We are really excited to see a change and to be planning events. It’s refreshing.” The YGBW includes the following branches: Brandywine YMCA, Jennersville YMCA, Kennett Area YMCA, Lionville Community YMCA, Octorara YMCA Program Center, Oscar Lasko YMCA and Childcare Center, Upper Main Line YMCA and West Chester Area YMCA. The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) will host its first virtual 5K, Run for Good, from Saturday, April 24, through Saturday, May 1. All are invited to register individually or as a team at w w w. y m c a g b w. o r g / r u n forgood5k. According to event organizers, each participant can choose the time and place to run or walk the 5K during the week, whether it be on a treadmill, at his or her local YMCA branch or on a neighborhood street or trail. Finishers will also be entered in a drawing to win daily prizes. Runners and walkers do not need to be a member of the YMCA to participate. “What you would do is submit your time, (which is) how long it takes you to run or walk your 5K at one time any day that week,” explained Kim Cavallero, YGBW vice president of marketing and communications. “The idea is to do a full 5K and then submit your time. We are going on the honor system.” During the week, participants are asked to post photos on Facebook and other outlets with the hashtag #RunForGoodYGBW. “We are hoping people will share on social media. We want to celebrate with everybody as they complete their 5K,” said Cavallero. “It’s a big accomplishment.” Those who register by Sunday, April 4, will receive a discount and will be guaranteed a special commemorative Run for Good T-shirt. The registration cost will increase on Monday, April 5, and then shirts will only be available on a first-come, first-served basis. T-shirts can be picked up on Healthy Kids Day, set this year for April 24, or at a local branch after that date. Healthy Kids Day is an annual YGBW event, but it was canceled last year because of the pandemic. “We are going to hold it this year at four of our branches,” noted Cavallaro. “It’s essentially an event to encourage parents to keep children active all summer long. We usually have moon bounces, police come and give motivational talks and there are group exercise classes. It’s a free event.” She added that details for Health Kids Day are still being finalized. “It’s a little different this year, so it will be taking them longer to figure out what activities to have and do safely,” Cavallero noted. All proceeds from the Run for Good will benefit YGBW’s

Jay’s Handyman Service Brazil, where she worked as a pharmacist,” Rikess said. “She would like to improve her English so that she can get her certification here as well as obtain citizenship.” “We are very grateful to have these wonderful volunteers in our program,” Rikess added. The Adult Tutoring Program tutor training is offered online by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Once the training is complete, volunteers are matched with a student of their choosing based on level, time and the student’s goals. Tutors are given access to many free online resources so they can create a lesson plan.

In addition to receiving assistance with passing the GED tests, students are also preparing for the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) for those interested in nursing and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), which measures the English language ability of non-native speakers who want to enroll in Englishspeaking universities. Prospective volunteer tutors, as well as students interested in enrolling in the program, are asked to contact Rikess at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610-344-4013. Although the coat giveaway for area men, women, and children held at The Factory was not announced far in advance, cars were lined up two abreast in the Together Community Center parking lot a half-hour before the event started on Feb. 13. Some waiting in line were also there for the Fresh Express grocery giveaway, held monthly at The Factory, but a number had come to protect themselves or their children from the cold with a new coat. The coats, which were given away until 2 p.m., were provided through a partnership between The Factory and the Blessings Store, a clothing bank ministry of Limeville United Methodist Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. The store is a project of Limeville pastor Jim Brashear and Jeff Markle, who travels from the Allentown area to oversee the clothing bank that was started at the church in late 2020. “We have partnered with the school districts,” said Markle, who noted that the church has been in contact with both Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts. “We have sent out emails to parents telling them we have clothing for families in need,” he added.

The clothing ministry has roots in Bethany Church, located in Allentown, where Brashear was pastor at the time the ministry started. “It was his vision 15 years ago to open a store in downtown Allentown for homeless and those in need,” said Markle. W hen Markle retired, he took over the Allentown store, partnering with the Burlington Coat Factory in the area to hold a coat drive each October and November. “I would give out 500 coats in the Lehigh Valley between November and January (annually),” said Markle, who noted Burlington customers could bring a clean coat in good condition to donate to receive a discount from the store. Customers could also purchase a coat to donate. Markle said about 20% of the collected coats are gently used, and the rest are purchased new. The 250 coats collected to be given away at The Factory were donated at the Trexlertown Burlington Coat Factory store between Thanksgiving of 2020 and Jan. 9, 2021. Markle said that he is at the Blessings Store at the Limeville Church on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. “If people can’t make it at that time, we can make arrangements,” Markle said, adding, “ We follow all the social distancing guidelines and (require) masks.” Only one family is served in the store at a time. “We are hoping we will be able to help families in need,” said Markle. In addition to clothing, the store offers a limited selection of free hygiene items for adults, teens, children, and infants. Those wishing to visit the store may call 610-349-3458 to arrange a time to shop. To learn more about the church, visit www.limevillechurch.org. Military Friendly measures an organization’s commitment, effort, and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefits for the military community. More than 1,200 schools sought Military Friendly designation by participating in the 202122 proprietary survey. Institutions were also evaluated using public data sources. Of the 747 institutions that earned the general designation, only 162 nationally were selected for Gold status, which is reserved for schools that scored within 10% of the 10th ranking school in their category. WCU strives to create an intentional culture of understanding, acceptance, and success for veterans, active military members, National Guard service members, and those who support them. Services and resources for members of the military and veterans at WCU are centralized through the Greg and Sandra Weisenstein Veterans Center. The Weisenstein endowment has been established to provide annual support in scholarships and programming for WCU student veterans. In addition, a licensed professional counselor, dedicated specifically to the needs of WCU’s student veteran population, is now on staff. The Veterans Center also offers student veterans spaces to meet formally, study, relax, recharge, and socialize, plus resources and events that connect veterans at WCU with those in the local community. A dedicated parking spot for current or prospective active military members or veteran military members has been added directly behind the building, which recently saw upgrades, including changes to its handicapped-accessible ramp/porch. A new Military Veterans Coordinating Committee has been established. It will be involved in developing and sustaining programs and initiatives that expand and support the experience of current and future military veteran students and their families. The complete 2021-22 Military Friendly schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.

retired from the Scoutmaster position in 2012 after serving in that role for 33 years. In honor of his longtime service to Scouting and to further recognize youths who share that enthusiasm for the Scouting program, the award was created in 2013. The award is presented to the Scout who has best exemplified the aspects of the Scout Oath and Scout Law over the previous year. Nominations are presented to the Scoutmaster from other adult leaders. The winner is determined by the current Scoutmaster and King, who still remains an active part of the troop as an assistant Scoutmaster and treasurer. Boy Scout Troop 20 meets at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Boys ages 11 to 18

are welcome to join, and the troop welcomes visitors at its regular meetings. Zink reported that the troop remained active during 2020. Scouts met via Zoom and took part in on-site camping trips. Additionally, the Scouts kept up their Adopt-AHighway cleanup commitment, and they took part in the annual Scouting for Food drive to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. “ We (may) still have restrictions because we don’t know what the summer looks like, but the boys have planned a full calendar,” said Zink. “We are planning to go back to Camp Rodney in Maryland. Last year we could not go because we were out of state.” For more information about the troop, email zink.scouts@gmail.com.

Although it will have a different look this year because of the pandemic, Little Hands Big Plans’ 13th annual motorcycle ride to benefit the Make-AWish Foundation will take place on Sunday, April 25, at the Southern End Community Association’s park, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. Registration will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and the ride will begin at 1 p.m. Following the ride, Kids Day will take place in the park from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. In a typical year, the group would meet at the park and then follow a scenic route to Wilmington, Del., where attendees would have an ice cream social with families at the Ronald McDonald House. This house provides lodging for families with children receiving treatment from Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Patients who were well enough also attended the social. This year, as was the case in 2020, the motorcycle ride will not travel to Delaware because of visitation and capacity restrictions at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. Instead, the ride will be local. “We are doing a local scenic route and coming back to the park, where we will have a Kids Day for children with special needs (and their siblings) to try to make it a similar experience,” said event organizer Marsha Wagner, one of the family members who founded the Little Hands Big Plans charity. “We will have ice cream sundaes and little games for the kids to play, and a DJ will play music.” There will a cost per motorcycle to participate in the local ride. Food and event T-shirts will be on sale at the park. Attendees will be asked to practice social distancing. Proceeds will go to the MakeA-Wish Foundation via the Keith Wagner’s Mother’s Day Convoy account. Keith, Marsha’s father, will lead the annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy because he raised

the most money for the foundation in 2019. Featured in the convoy will be the Make-A-Wish Angel trailer. The trailer is enclosed, and its sides are covered with stars and the names of MakeA-Wish children who have died. One of the names is Marsha’s daughter, Harley. “My daughter, Harley, was a Make-A-Wish child, but she passed away before she got her wish,” explained Marsha. “The (first) year my dad got first place, he asked to pull the trailer (so that) Harley would be able to be part of the convoy (in spirit). Now, every year the first truck has the opportunity to pull that trailer.” The Little Hands Big Plans charity was formed by the Wagner family, which has adopted children with special needs and serious medical conditions. Marsha also lost another adopted daughter, Elaina. “We raise money for kids, and we have big plans,” Marsha said, explaining the name of the charity. “ We didn’t want to call it ‘the Wagners.’ We wanted something more.” For more information about the motorcycle ride and Kids Day, readers may call Marsha at 717-989-3998 or search for “Little Hands Big Plans” on Facebook. Those who would like to reserve an event T-shirt in advance may call or email Marsha at harleykarolyn mom@aol.com. Orders are due by Friday, March 26.
