Octorara Students Create Living History Museum BY FRANCINE FULTON
Sports icons like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, historical figures like Harriet Tubman and Abraham Lincoln and creative people like illustrator Charles Schultz and musician Louis Armstrong were highlighted during a Living History Museum presented at Octorara
Elementary School on March 25. During the program, thirdgraders in the classes of teachers Dena Schott and Erika Lynch portrayed the famous characters, provided informational speeches about their lives and displayed posters they had created. Parents and other third-graders were invited to attend the presentation. See Living History pg 2
The two-story Brinton House, located at 17 Green St., Christiana, was built in 1867.
Christiana Historical Society Has A New Home BY FRANCINE FULTON
fter standing empty for several years, the Brinton House in Christiana will soon be the home of the Christiana Historical Society, with future plans calling for the establishment of a community room, a meeting space and an area to display historical exhibits. The two-story house, located at 17 Green St., next to Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church, is owned by the Borough of Christiana, but has been leased to the historical society. According to Darlene Colón, society president, the building once operated as a family nursery. “The Brinton family was very active in the Underground Railroad. One of the children married, so they built that house for him in 1867,” she explained. “(The property) was a nursery and they raised flowers. Years ago, there were greenhouses

there. They sold the property to the Smallwoods, and they ran the nursery, which is why the smokestack by the barn has the name ‘Smallwood’ on it. They grew magnificent roses.” A great deal of restoration work must be done in the building before it is ready to be occupied, including mold remediation. “The foundation is solid. Some of the floors have buckled (because of a water leak), so we have to get that done,” said Colón. “We will have to do major fundraising and we are looking at some grants.” Assistance will be provided by students from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster. “Thaddeus Stevens College has agreed to work with us and give us some of their students because all students have to do community service now,” said Colón. “(It is appropriate) since they are learning about painting, electrical work, carpentry and masonry.”
Area residents are invited to take part in a community garden cleanup at the Parkesburg Library on Saturday, April 9, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The gardens at the library include a pollinator garden at the main entrance and floral beds along the side of the building, as well as raised garden beds located in a fenced-in area behind the library that are used to grow vegetables.

“They had to come dressed as their person and prepare a speech,” explained Lynch. “(They had to list) what (their historical figure was) best known for, interesting facts from their childhood and their adulthood, three character traits and what their legacy was.” Planning began in midFebruary, when students started completing research by reading biographies and using online resources. “They had to select one important person in history who made a difference in the world. They spent about a month researching,” noted Lynch. In addition to using books from the school library, Lynch borrowed books from the Parkesburg Library for the students’ use. Figures portrayed in the museum included Helen Keller and a cardigan-wearing

Mr. Rogers from the children’s TV show “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.” “One of my boys was Charles Schultz,” noted Lynch. “He did a freehand sketch of Snoopy on his poster. It was neat for him to see that something that is a hobby of his could become a career.” One student portrayed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
“(The student’s) family is from Mexico, and she related to her,” said Lynch. “(Kahlo) was the first (20th-century) Mexican artist to have a portrait in the Louvre.” A young female student portrayed her grandmother’s favorite singer, Elvis Presley, and she played his music during her presentation. Her grandmother was able to
attend the event. Lynch said she was pleased at the program’s success and plans to repeat the event next year. “They really got into all of their people. It was very worthwhile,” she said. “I was appreciative to have my student-teacher, Valerie Brewer, by my side. She wanted to do a big culminating project. She deserves a lot of the credit.”

As part of the three-day sesquicentennial celebration in Parkesburg to commemorate the borough’s 150th anniversary, a community choir will sing during a worship in the park program set for Sunday, May 22, at 11 a.m. The Parkesburg Churches’ Community Choir is currently seeking singers age 12 and over to join the choir, which will be led by Ashley Radcliff, the music director at Parkesburg United Methodist Church (UMC). Rehearsals have been set for Saturdays, April 30 and May 14,
at 10 a.m. at Parkesburg UMC, 411 Main St., Parkesburg. “It’s not a professional choir, so all are welcome,” she said. So far, choir members from Parkesburg UMC will participate, but Radcliff is seeking singers from other area churches as well. “The stage we are using can fit up to 75 (people). We’re hoping to make it a big group,” she said. Those who cannot attend rehearsals may contact Radcliff and she will provide them with the music and a practice track to sing along to. The group will sing two traditional hymn arrangements
during the worship in the park. “A few of the churches are offering contemporary worship groups, but they wanted a community choir as well,” she noted. Radcliff noted that the singers could get together again as part of an ongoing performance group, similar to the Octorara Community Band. “I am kind of excited to see who shows up,” she stated. “It will be good to meet some new people and see if it (becomes) a longerterm project.” For more information about the choir, contact Radcliff at Ashley.L.radcliff@gmail.com.

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5

The building will eventually be used by the society to host its meetings and showcase its artifacts and memorabilia. In addition, it will provide additional space for its annual open house on Sept. 11, which commemorates the Christiana Resistance. “(The property) is on 6.7 acres, so we will be able to use it for events,” said society vice president Jim Groff, who was instrumental in acquiring the building for the society. “The building will be used as a home for the historical society, and we also want to have a community room there,” Colón added. “It may be a little community café. We want to keep history alive.” “One thing about Christiana is we always had a place where people would sit and socialize and talk. We have lost that in our town,” said Groff. “I feel that this building can bring that back. People can sit down and get to know each other again like it used to be.” Colón said she is looking forward to when the building can open its doors to the public. “It will be a boon for the community. I can see all kinds of things happening here. Communities are not in touch like they used to be, and we want to bring that back. We want to be like Mayberry,” she said with a smile, referring to the town on the 1960s sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show.” For more information, search for “The Christiana Historical Society” on Facebook or email Colón at Quamony@aol.com.

There is power in a pair of pants, strength in a shirt and joy in a jacket. Over the past 50 years, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has provided financial support around the world through its MCC Thrift shop network. To date, MCC Thrift shops have contributed more than $250 million to help people in need. The first MCC Thrift shop opened in 1972 in Manitoba, Canada. Since then, the network has expanded to more than 85 stores across Canada and the United States. In Lancaster County and just outside the county, there are seven MCC Thrift shops: Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, Country Gift & Thrift Shoppe in Gap, Main Street Closet in Willow Street, Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. Last year, these stores raised more than $1.6 million for MCC’s ministries.

EASTER EGG HUNT Saturday, April 9TH 11:00 a.m. Cochranville Church (A United Methodist Congregation) 92 Church St., Cochranville, PA 19330
The gardens at Parkesburg Library include a pollinator garden (left photo) and a raised bed garden for growing vegetables (right photo). R082263

Plants that have been grown in the raised beds include tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and lettuce. In past years, some vegetables grown in the garden have been shared with library patrons. “Each person is in charge of their bed and if they have too much (produce), they take it into the library,” noted Forrest. The library’s community garden program began in 2014 when Penn State Master Gardener Dave Jones, assisted by his wife, Linda, established the pollinator garden, which includes petunias, dahlias, marigolds and hydrangeas plants that are meant to attract birds, bees and butterflies. In August of 2016, the library’s flowering garden was certified as a
pollinator-friendly garden by the Penn State Extension Master Gardener program. In addition to coming out for the cleanup day, the public is invited to participate in the garden program by donating supplies, such as soil and compost. Volunteers, including local carpenters, are also needed to help repair some of the existing raised beds or construct new ones. Forrest said the library is making plans to host garden talks by Master Gardeners that will cover various topics. Garden workdays are also being planned. “The library is the hub of the community. This is one way to (bring) people together,” she said. The Parkesburg Library is located
at 105 West St., Parkesburg. For more information about the community garden program, contact the library at 610-857-5165.

A Time to Rejoice
Attendees are asked to bring their own garden tools and gloves in preparation for pulling weeds and removing debris. “Right now (everything is) covered with leaves,” said library board member Kathy Forrest. “The idea is to clean up the whole area, pick up trash and (complete) general maintenance.” The library offers limited raised bed spaces to community members on a first-come, first-served basis. The beds have already been claimed for the 2022 growing season. On the day of the cleanup, participants will be on-site preparing their gardens for spring planting. “Planting doesn’t start until May. The rule of thumb is to plant (after) Mother’s Day weekend,” said Forrest.

Upon completion of the merger, which is expected to occur before the end of April, TLC will be merged into BRC. Land Trust in 1995, TLC initially focused on preserving open space in Kennett Township. As TLC became more involved in preserving lands in other townships, TLC became a standalone nonprofit organization, working with landowners, municipalities, and other nonprofits throughout southern Chester County. Headquartered at the 45-acre Chandler Mill Nature Preserve in Kennett Township, TLC operates five public preserves in Kennett and Elk townships totaling more than 500 acres. TLC currently holds 35 conservation easements on 1,000 acres across seven townships. BRC, originally founded as Brandywine Valley Association, was formed in 1945 by a group of local citizens from the West Chester and Wilmington, Del., areas who were concerned about the water quality in their community. In 1952, the Red Clay Valley Association followed in its footsteps, and in 2015, Brandywine Valley Association and Red Clay Valley Association merged to form BRC. The BRC headquarters at the 318acre Myrick Conservation Center in Pocopson is home to equestrian trails, nine miles of hiking trails, and the 19th-century Browning Barn, which hosts more than 13,000 students a
summer camp. BRC’s goals are to make sure that the local waterways are drinkable, swimmable, and fishable; to introduce youths to and educate them about their natural environment; and to preserve and protect natural areas for the highest level of biodiversity while maintaining public access. coordinator for MCC U.S., emphasized that shopping at MCC Thrift shops can also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing waste and supporting climate sustainability. “By reducing the number of new items they purchase, shoppers can have a positive impact on the environment, keep clothing out of landfills and reduce the excess use of resources needed to make new clothing,” she said. To help celebrate MCC Thrift’s 50th anniversary, the organization is holding the Thifty 50 Challenge, said Laura Pauls-Thomas, communications and donor relations associate for MCC East Coast. “Sign up to receive a weekly sustainability challenge that helps our planet,” she explained, adding that participants will also have a chance to win an MCC Thrift gift card each week. Visit https://thrift.mcc.org/50/challenge to sign up. “When I had small children, I frequented thrift shops and yard sales because it was the only option that fit into our budget,” said King. “While that is still the case for many families, I am encouraged to see individuals who have disposable income choosing to shop at thrift shops. … Thrifting is now practiced by people of all ages and income levels.”
