Spring Cleanup Held In Parkesburg BY FRANCINE FULTON

lanting flowers, picking up trash and pulling weeds were just some of the activities that took place during a spring cleanup day held by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) on April 3. Volunteers met at Parkesburg’s Minch Park at 9 a.m., after which they were dispatched to different areas of the borough to complete the beautification efforts. “We’re having fun. It’s a wonderful turnout,” said PAC member Tina O’Connor. “It’s (about) getting the community together and making our town look fabulous.” At Minch Park, a group of Girl Scouts from Junior Troop 415 planted pansies in large ceramic flowerpots that they had handpainted. The flowerpots were later placed in the park’s playground. A total of 13 pots were planted with flowers, including six on First Avenue and five on Main Street. Two of the flowerpots were placed at the Parkesburg VFW on Fourth Avenue.

P

Work was also done at the North Park, where the Parkesburg Community Garden is located. Volunteers pulled weeds, removed debris, trimmed the grass and cleaned the garden’s water barrels. The garden was started in the summer of 2020 by Shelby Kreger as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Shelby, who is now a student at Alvernia University, was on hand for the cleanup on April 3. At the South Eastern Pennsylvania Travel Baseball Association (SEPTBA) baseball fields, volunteers planted grass seed, raked stones around the dugouts and seating areas and cleaned up litter along the creek behind the basketball court. Volunteers also removed debris from the bridge located on East Bridge Street. Among the participants in the cleanup were volunteers from Parkesburg Borough, including the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission and borough council members, along with representatives of Kacie’s Cause Parkesburg Chapter.

During Parkesburg Action Committee’s spring cleanup day on April 3, Girl Scouts from Junior Troop 415 and their family members planted pansies in flowerpots that they hand painted. Participants included (back left) Stephanie Rice, (front, from left) Amelia McElwee, Morrigan McElwee, Sara McElwee, Rylie Rice and Jenn Rice.

Due to travel restrictions, MOPC sent funds, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to the nursing staff and medical facilities in Iquitos, the major Peruvian city where past mission teams have stayed during their journeys to and from Tamshiyacu. “No one made it to Peru last year,” noted Daniel Henry, MOPC mission team leader. “The airport which we land at in the Amazon was closed most if not all of last summer.”

Busy moms, families affected by COVID-19, teachers, first responders and others are invited to request a complimentary dinner from Lasagna Love, a national organization that matches people in need of a homecooked meal with a volunteer home cook. Individuals can also anonymously nominate a friend, family member or neighbor who they believe would enjoy a lasagna. Lasagna Love is a national group composed of approximately 24,000 volunteers. Locally, there is a Lasagna Love group in Chester County, which is headed up by regional leader Lynn Engle of West Grove. “My husband and I were volunteering at the local food pantry and because of the pandemic, we could not do that anymore because volunteers were not allowed. It was frustrating not being able to help,” said Engle, explaining why she became part of the group. “I joined in August of 2020. We have about 140 volunteers.” The national organization was started in April 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic by Rhiannon Menn of California, who wanted to help those who had lost their job or were afraid or unable to leave their homes. As part of the program, those who would like to request a lasagna or nominate a friend to receive a lasagna can sign up at www.lasagnalove.org. “The person who is nominated would get an email and it says, ‘You have been nominated; here is how you accept,’” Engle explained. “It directs them to the website, and they complete the process.” Those who would like to cook lasagnas are also invited to register at the website. “I have some volunteers who sign up just for one time. Some people sign up for once a month,” Engle noted. “The most active person I have (makes) five lasagnas a week.” She noted that it is important that the lasagnas be homemade and not storebought. “Rhiannon, the founder, feels very strongly that (homemade food) is the ‘love’ part of Lasagna Love. It’s the kindness of making something for a neighbor or a stranger,” Engle shared. “It’s like your neighbor made you dinner.”

The lasagna is delivered at a mutually convenient time, and noncontact deliveries are encouraged. “Some volunteers knock on the door and wait until the recipient comes and takes the food or wait in the car to make sure it gets picked up,” Engle noted. On a week when there are not a lot of requests, volunteers are kept busy. They recently delivered 60 loaf-size lasagnas to senior residents at Luther House in West Grove. “(The seniors) were excited about it, and the volunteers were excited to be able to have that opportunity,” Engle reported. Engle emphasized that lasagnas are not just for low-income recipients. “Part of the mission statement is that there are different kinds of needs,” she stated. “We are not just serving people in need financially. We deliver to people who are not working or (who are) working multiple jobs or work from home and homeschool their kids. It’s only one meal and it won’t change the world for the family, but it will change their world for that one day.” For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/WeAre LasagnaLove.

According to Liesl Denson, Dorothy’s granddaughter, Dorothy and Paul were married in Atglen on Aug. 8, 1942. “Grandma always told me about her wedding day,” Liesl shared. “She said that it rained all day and the (church) flooded and the cake floated out of the church and down the hill.” Dorothy, who was born in Atglen, is the oldest of eight children and the last to survive. Zooks Homemade Chicken Pies Celebrates Grand Opening! Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. From a distance, the numerous pinwheels displayed at Warwick County Park, Springton Manor Farm and Nottingham Park on the weekend of March 27 and 28 may have resembled a unique art installation. However, the meaning of the display was more poignant. The pinwheels were set in place as a makeshift memorial to residents of Chester County who lost their lives to COVID-19. The memorial tributes marked one year since Chester County recorded its first coronavirus death. At each of the locations, a sign was posted near the memorial with a quote by poet Thomas Campbell that read, “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

Although the event is typically held in person, organizers of this year’s gala decided to make it virtual because of the pandemic. “It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year and we wanted to hold it even it meant making it virtual,” said Danielle Dougherty, DVCCC director of philanthropic partnerships. “Last year it was supposed to be at Franklin Commons (in Phoenixville), and it was canceled. We’re hoping to hold it there in 2022 in person.” Registrants will receive a dinner package catered by ANEU Catering & Events in Malvern with the option for pickup or delivery by a DVCCC volunteer. All tips will be donated to the organization. In addition, everyone will receive a Gala Celebration Kit, complete with goodies, mailed to their home. “(The meal) comes in a thermal package, and it has reheating instructions,” Dougherty explained. “You can eat it while logging on to our Zoom gala.” The virtual gala will be hosted by Jen Croneberger, founder of JLynne Consulting Group. “She is a longtime supporter of the DVCCC. She is an TEDx speaker and author,” noted Dougherty. The program will be presented live from Advanced Staging Productions in West Chester. The gala will be broadcast as a Zoom webinar,

Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline held a special memorial service at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore on March 27, where they laid three wreaths one to honor the 543,975 lives lost nationally; one for the 24,953 lives lost across Pennsylvania; and one to commemorate the 747 lives lost in Chester County. Under the Springton Manor Farm great oak tree, 747 pinwheels were displayed - one for each life lost in Chester County since the start of the pandemic. “Our family, those who we worked with and members of our community - we miss them,” said Moskowitz. “We hope this ceremony will serve as part of the collective healing for our Chester County community.” Moskowitz shared how she coped with losing her sister seven years ago. “My wish is that you remember their smiles, remember their stories, remember something funny they said or did,” she stated. “Remember their history, their shared memories. Remember they loved you, and even with tears in your eyes and pain in your heart, remember to smile when you think of them.” Maxwell said that it was fitting that the memorials were located in the parks. “We know that our parks and trails and the many other conservancies and preserves throughout Chester County have been a haven for fresh air, for exercise and for switching off the outside world part time to enjoy nature,” he noted. Chester County’s Department of Drug & Alcohol Services (CCDDAS) will offer several community events during April. CCDDAS recently noted that the opioid and overdose crisis, along with other substance use disorders, are still prevalent during the pandemic. In some ways, the crisis is exacerbated by the pandemic, according to CCDDAS. The upcoming events are part of a continued effort to prevent further opioid use disorders (OUD) and accidental overdose death. All event details and registrations can be found on www.chesco.org /drugandalcohol. Residents should wear a mask and practice social distancing at all locations. A Virtual Opioid Epidemic and Narcan Training hosted by Chester County Hospital will be held on Wednesday, April 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Each participant will receive training on the use of naloxone and receive a dose of naloxone at no charge. Registration is required for the training. A mobile medication collection hosted by Chester County Hospital and the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office will take place on Thursday, April 22, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Chester County Hospital South Campus, 701 E. Marshall St., West Chester. Citizens are invited to dispose of unneeded or expired medications. A mobile medication collection hosted by Tredyffrin Police Department will be held on Friday, April 23, at Surrey Services, 60 Surrey Way, Devon, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Citizens are invited to dispose of unneeded or expired medications.

The National DEA Drug Take Back Day hosted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will be Saturday, April 24. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., temporary prescription drug disposal sites will be set up throughout Chester County. Drug and alcohol treatment and support services, which include 12-step meetings and other supports, have been and will continue to be available during the pandemic. Regardless of whether an individual has insurance or not, drug and alcohol treatment services are available in Chester County. Accessing the services is dependent upon individual coverage. Individuals with insurance, including Medicaid, should call the number listed on the back of their insurance card to get information on how to access drug and alcohol services. For individuals who do not have insurance, several local agencies are available to help. They include Gaudenzia Coatesville, which may be contacted at 610-383-9600; Mirmont Outpatient in Exton, 484-565-1130; Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems in Kennett Square, 610388-9225; Creative Health Services in Phoenixville, 610933-1223; and Gaudenzia West Chester, 610-429-1414. MOPC began its Peru mission in 2006 in conjunction with Daniel’s brother, Dave Henry, who serves as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City, Mo. Together, the two churches raised funds to build a sister church in Tamshiyacu in 2008. Church members from both Pennsylvania and Missouri travel to Peru every year and stay for one to two weeks. While there, they lead Bible school and work on construction projects at the church and within the village. “We strive to share the Gospel and the love of Jesus to the folks in this region of the Amazon,” said Daniel. Over the years, the mission teams have completed several projects in Peru, such as doing maintenance on the church, building a playground for special needs children, installing a running water system for the church, and supplying malaria nets and parasite medicines. To raise funds for its Peru mission, MOPC held its annual Nuts ‘N’
