times, (because local schools would have discount tickets) and collected about 500 postcards from many of the exhibits,” Snyder said. “She was there when the king and queen (of England) visited in June of ’39.” Snyder’s mother passed away in 2013, but Snyder had taken an interest well before that in the items she had saved, along with additional material given to him by his uncle George Shenk. “For about 30 years I’ve been building on that collection, and now have uniforms, banners, posters, salt and pepper shakers, etc., etc. - and a couple of file drawers just of paper from that fair. The postcard pile has grown
to about 1,200,” he said. “Obviously I inherited a collecting gene from my mom.” Snyder has assembled a colorful PowerPoint presentation that he will give at the historical society meeting, plus he plans to bring a selection of World’s Fair items for display. The program is open to all at no charge. “It’s a very visual program; I have about 600 images so far,” Snyder said. Snyder’s presentation is the latest in the historical society’s regular practice of providing informational presentations related to local history and history-related topics. The symbol of the fair was the trylon and perisphere - two futuristic structures built for the fair that were immediately identifiable. Inside the huge ball-shaped perisphere was the “world of tomorrow,” where attendees could go around on a ride to see the projected world of 1960. Snyder believes his favorite area of the fair would have been the amusement zone. “There’s all the fun stuff. Robert Ripley’s ‘Believe It or Not’ had a pavilion, there were animal exhibits, and it was such a tribute to commerce with everything that was being sold,” he said. Looking back at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair also offers a glimpse of the world of 1939, when America was coming out of the Great Depression and World War II was on the horizon. “The war broke out (in Europe) while the fair was on,” Snyder said. Snyder’s connection to the New York World’s Fair of 193940 came through his mother, Betty Shenk, who grew up in Flushing, N.Y., near the World’s Fair. It opened in April, 80 years ago, when she was 15 years old. “She went often, over 30

World’s Fair in New York City stands out to Snyder. “New York was probably the largest - 45 million people attended that fair over the twoyear season, which was equivalent to a third of the U.S. population at the time,” Snyder said. The theme for Snyder’s presentation will be “A Trip Back to the World of the Future.” Through photo and postcard images, he will take viewers back 80 years to see what people of the time envisioned for their future. “‘The World of the Future’ was the subtitle of the fair,” Snyder noted. The New York World’s Fair was the debut site for television, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s address at the opening of the fair as a first broadcast. Other products made their first large public appearance at the fair, including nylons, electric razors, and air conditioning. In addition to product displays, there was entertainment, including an aquacade, musical exhibitions, live broadcasts of radio shows, and a show of “trains from 100 years of history” with real trains going by.

Ballet Group Plans Show Local youths will present William Shakespeare’s comedy “Much Ado About Nothing” on Friday, May 3, at 3 and 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Chestnut Church, 742 Vintage Road, Christiana. The performers are from the class of students in fifth grade and up from Octorara Ballet School’s LEAP: Learning Arts
Enrichment Program. “Much Ado About Nothing” tells the story of Beatrice and Benedick, who, with the help of their family, friends and neighbors, squabble their way from hatred into love. This familyfriendly, 45-minute production has been adapted for young players.
The performances are free, but reservations are required. Seats may be reserved starting on Tuesday, April 23, at http://bit.ly/LEAPtix2019. Meals will be available to eat in or take out. This is the second year for the auction, which was popular in its inaugural year. “Last year was a building block. Things have changed for this year,” Wright said. “We’ve gotten a lot more people involved for this year. A lot of our community is coming together to help us plan for this event, not just the staff and volunteers here.” The auction is the nonprofit organization’s biggest fundraising event of the year, with all proceeds going to help support the Christiana Community Ambulance Association. “It helps us to continue to provide 24-7, 365-days-ayear emergency service for southern Lancaster and western Chester counties,” Wright said. “Without funding, we cannot respond to 911 calls.” For more information or to donate items for the auction, readers may call the ambulance station at 610-593-8166 or email fundraising@ccaa52.com. Visitors’ first impressions of a home are often dictated by the home’s entryway. As one may judge a book by its cover, the same can be said about the impression that a front door and entryway can create, regardless of how accurate that impression is. Making certain changes to an entryway can go a long way toward improving curb appeal. Entryways also can set the scene for a home’s interior. Whether one chooses to be classic or bold, modern or traditional, there are various ways to quickly transform a home’s entryway. · Bold front door color: Color can dramatically enhance an entryway. existing door or replacing it with a more vivid option can do the trick. According to the DIY Network, some colors to consider are turquoise, yellow, red, indigo, orange, and black. The door color should complement the other shades of the home, such as those on siding and trim. · Custom walkway: Guide guests right to the front door with an attractive (and safe) walkway. Stamped concrete or decorative paver blocks may fit the bill. This walkway can extend to the street or to the driveway. · Contain plants: Landscaping around the entryway should be neat and welltended, as overgrown plants or shrubbery may give off an air of neglect. Container plants and carefully curated shrubs can
create a neat and inviting aura. · Highlight the address: Make sure the home can be found easily with bold and decorative house numbers. Consider two different address signs: one illuminated and easily viewed from the curb and another closer to the front door. · Utilize high-end materials: The relatively small area of real estate by the front door enables homeowners to splurge on more opulent materials that can really add a feeling of luxury. These can include colorful tiles, ornate planters, decorative wooden doors, or elaborate knobs and lighting fixtures. · Add architectural details: Find out which architectural elements will meld with the style of the home and then incorporate them. Moldings, columns, shutters, and trim can be considered. The entryway to a home garners a lot of attention. Home-
owners can enhance their spaces with entryways that really make a statement.
hand fork and trowel, are essential for small digging jobs, especially when working with flower pots or containers. · Edging spade: This flat-blade shovel is handy to have around because of its versatility. Edging spades can slice turf, edge
gardens, and cut through roots. · Pruners: Sharpened pruners can cut through stems and branches effortlessly. · Hose: Choose a high-quality hose that is lightweight and durable, as hoses will always be necessary.
Boosting Curb Appeal Upgrading the front door is not the only way to make a home look more appealing to both guests and potential home buyers. There are many other projects - both big and small - that can help spruce up a home’s curb appeal. Ideas include: - Installing new windows - Adding a patio - Repairing and painting molding, trim, and shutters - Painting garage doors - Upgrading flower boxes or mailboxes/stands - Investing in nice outdoor furniture for a patio - Replacing gutters and downspouts

Utilize vertical space when possible Getting items up and off the floor can maximize square footage in a home. Bookshelves, hanging wall shelves, hooks, cabinetry, built-ins, and other storage solutions that rely on walls and ceilings are simple and effective storage solutions. Unused space behind cabinet or closet doors are some additional places to store belongings.
Utilizing vertical surfaces can help maximize space in small rooms. For example, hanging razors or toothbrushes on medicine cabinet walls and curling irons and other hair tools on the interior of cabinet doors can help keep clutter at bay in bathrooms.

As the weather transitions from cool winter weather to the balmy heat of summer, many people turn their attention to spring cleaning. In addition to cleaning windows and dusting off cobwebs, some residents elect to combat clutter and tackle reorganizational projects during the spring season. Clutter can be a major source of stress that affects how individuals feel about their spaces. Psychology Today indicates messy homes and work spaces can contribute to feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and overwhelming stress. Clutter bombards the mind with excessive stimuli, makes it more difficult to relax, and can constantly signal to the brain that work is never done. Tackling messes - no matter where they are lurking - is not a one-time project. In fact, clearing a home of clutter requires dedication and lifestyle changes. With these organizational tips and tricks, anyone can work through their home room by room and conquer clutter.

be highly effective at preventing dogrelated lawn damage. · Speak with a landscaper about planting new grass. Certain types of grass, such as Bermuda grass, can withstand dog damage better than others. The local climate will dictate which types of grass are likely to thrive in a given area, so speak with a professional landscaper about the viability of planting new grass. · Install fencing. Pet owners with expansive yards can install fencing that allows dogs to spend time exercising outdoors without granting them access to the entire property. Large dogs will need more room than small ones, so homeowners should try to build fenced-in areas that allow dogs to run freely and get the exercise they need to stay healthy. · Work with a dog trainer. Dog trainers might be able to work with dogs so they only urinate in certain areas of the yard, greatly reducing the damage they can cause to a lawn. Trainers also might help curb digging and clawing behaviors that can damage lawns as well as gardens. · Consider hardscaping. Hardscaping might be most effective for pet owners with small properties. Hardscaping does not include grass and can add visual appeal to a property while saving pet owners the headaches of dealing with dog-related lawn damage.
Thick grass is often a hallmark of a healthy lawn. If grass begins to thin, homeowners may feel as though all the time and effort they spent tending to their lawns was for naught. Thinning grass can have any number of causes. And while it might take a little effort to address, thinning grass can be treated if homeowners correctly identify that cause of the problem. Working with a landscape professional is a great way to combat such issues before they compromise the look of a lawn. Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungus is causing the problem. For example, Bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungus that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well. Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall,
when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought. Ascochyta leaf blight Lawns suffering from Ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho, when a lawn is affected by Ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the Ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it has seemingly been cured.

Dogs often love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns. Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advice to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns. In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring. Furry friends may also get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc. Pet owners who want to let their dogs run free in the yard but don’t want damaged grass may be tempted to put their pooches in diapers when letting them outside, but such an approach isn’t necessary. In fact, some simple strategies can

The Perks Of Leaving The Painting To The Pros Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. And, thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience, and a knowledge of how various paints - including finishes for particular applications - will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on carpeting or floors, or they may not
be able to pull off the nuances that are indicative of a spot-on painting job. Professional painters have spent hours learning the ropes of what works - and what does not. Painters often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. And because professional painters make a business out of doing interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can
improve efficiency. That means a professional job can typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project. Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, while novices may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Plus, if mistakes happen, DIYers have to spend additional time and money fixing them. Safety can be another large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings
can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience.

Pastel colors Pastels, which include soft pink, powder blue, lavender, and peach, create a tranquil feeling in a garden. This makes pastel plants perfect for those who want their gardens to be a relaxing, peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The NGA notes that pastels may looked washed out in the midday sun, so they may be best enjoyed early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Complementary colors Complementary colors are those that are opposite one another on the color wheel. Orange and blue are examples of complementary colors. According to the NGA, Bright colors A garden full of bright colors like red, complementary colors can add orange, magenta, and yellow can provide creative energy and vitality to a a landscape with vigor and energy. Investments For Coatesville Announced The Chester County commissioners, joined by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) general manager Jeff Knueppel, recently announced details of major investments that are designed to boost public transportation, economic development and community services in the city of Coatesville. At a briefing held at the location of Coatesville’s proposed new train station, Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell noted the many city, county and state initiatives and efforts that have come together - and are expected to continue to come together - to strengthen Coatesville’s neighborhoods and its downtown. Headlining the list of the commissioners’ announcements is Chester County’s agreement with SEPTA to bring back the regional rail service to the city of Coatesville that ceased operation in 1996. The proposed new service will extend SEPTA train operations beyond the current terminus in Thorndale to a new station in Coatesville. Service will begin when construction of the new train station is completed by PennDOT. The design for the new Coatesville Train Station is well underway, and PennDOT anticipates that the station project will be completed within three years of the start of construction. The county commissioners also announced funding of $1 million in community revitalization funds for the city, to be used to kickstart the parking garage project that is part of the train station development. The commissioners also noted further commitments, including funding for infrastructure improvements, affordable housing projects, education, training and job creation opportunities and access to community programs and services. Work on the First Avenue and Lincoln Highway intersection is just beginning through $1.7 million in Chester County Community

approval to move forward with the project. Cremation and inurnment in a columbarium is an alternative to traditional burial. Included in the purchase of a niche is the care and maintenance provided by the soon-to-be installed Columbarium Committee, which will be responsible for all ongoing matters and responsibility germane to the oversight of the facility. In advance of construction, Trinity has made purchase of niches accessible to the congregation. The committee, Deets, and Vestry do, however, maintain responsibility and service to the broader Coatesville community as per its mission statement. Trinity plans to reach out to neighboring congregations and funeral homes to make them aware of this addition. For more information, readers may contact Shanley at 610-389-0715 or vjs3brpaws@aol.com.

Healing Heroes Provides Service Dogs The Healing Heroes initiative was launched by Armstrong on Veterans Day 2016 with the goal to raise enough funds to donate five service dogs to qualifying disabled veterans within communities Armstrong serves. More than two years later, enough funds have been raised to donate 11 service dogs, with six of those dogs being already paired with veterans. Four of those veterans just returned from the Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs facility in Williston, Fla. The latest four veterans to be paired include Bryan and service dog Fahrny of Wadsworth, Ohio; Lisa and Yogi of Hamlin, W.Va.; Harvey and Rosa of Austintown, Ohio; and Samara and Angel of Scottdale. The veterans spent time training at the Guardian Angels headquarters,
where they learned how to live with their new companions. The expenses for training and pairing for each service dog are estimated at $22,000. Armstrong, along with its customers and the communities it serves, raised more than $245,000 to date, according to Sam Pietrangelo, community marketing manager and Healing Heroes Committee chair. Four veterans have recently been paired with service dogs. Amstrong is still seeking veteran applicants in Chester and York counties, as well as Harford County, Md. Money is still being raised for the Healing Heroes program. To donate or for more information, readers Four veterans have paired with service dogs through the Healing may visit www.ArmstrongOne Heroes program. The 2019 Pennsylvania Leopold Conservation Award seeks nominations of farmers or foresters who go above and beyond in the care and management of natural resources. Sand County Foundation presents the Leopold Conservation Award to private landowners in 13 states for extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation. In Pennsylvania, the $10,000 award is presented with Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Heinz Endowments. Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes landowners who inspire others with their dedication to land, water, and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. In his 1949 book, “A Sand County Almanac,” Leopold called for an ethical relationship between people and the land they own and manage. Nominations may be submitted on behalf of a landowner, or landowners may nominate themselves. The application can be found at https://sandcounty foundation.org/uploads/PA-2019 -CFN.pdf. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding customers that they can join more than 140,000 Pennsylvanians who have pre-verified for REAL ID online and at driver’s license centers statewide. Customers who bring in the required REAL ID documentation to any PennDOT Driver License Center may apply for REAL ID online once REAL IDs are available in March and receive their REAL ID driver’s license or photo ID card in the mail. Because PennDOT may already have electronic documents on file for approximately 35 percent of its total customers - individuals who received their first Pennsylvania driver’s license or ID card after September 2003 - these customers have had the option to apply for REAL ID preverification online since March of 2018. Most of PennDOT’s customers, however, received their initial product before September 2003, so Penn DOT does not have their required REAL ID documents on file.
